The new taxis parading through the Corniche.

DOHA: The Transport Company (Mowasalat) launched the first batch of 350 taxis yesterday.

Some 220 turquoise-coloured brand new Toyota and Honda vehicles formed a parade at the Doha Corniche, after they were flagged off from the parking ground near the Doha Sheraton at 4pm. Later, they merged into the busy traffic inviting attention from the weekend crowd. The remaining vehicles also hit the roads later in the day.

The cabs, equipped with an advanced communication system, carry the name “Karwa” (a classical Arabic word meaning reward or fare) and are plied by specially-trained drivers in uniform. The company planned to increase the number of vehicles to 1,000 in a phased manner.

The old orange-coloured taxis would be completely phased out in three years, he added.

The operation is monitored from a service centre. All the vehicles are connected to the centre through an advanced communication system. When a customer makes a call, the centre will alert the driver who is nearest to the spot. There will be an additional charge for availing of this facility.
