new lusaka independence stadium"working name" and redevelopment on the current Independence stadium
President Rupiah Banda has predicted that Zambia would one day grab the African Cup title. Addressing soccer fans who turned up to have a glimpse of the President and the visiting Chinese Premier, President Banda predicted that the Africa Cup was coming to Zambia in-light of the earmarked construction of the modern stadia in the country.

Mr Banda observed that Zambia merely participated in the continental tournaments but failed to deliver and grab the Cup because both the people and the Chipolopolo Boys including many other players were not motivated owing to poor infrastructures in the country.

“Africa Cup title will be crowned to our country, be rest assured, he said. The happy-looking Banda told the fans to support Government in its programs of developing football including other sports disciplines in the country.

The president was speaking today when he laid a foundation stone at the location where the state of art Lusaka Stadium is to be constructed with the help of the Chinese government at a cost of US$94 million with a capacity to hold 50 000 people.

Olympics? When 2080? By which time you have to renivate and build new stadiums anyway.

we're building these 2 stadiums coz we need them not because of some dream of hosting a tournament(zambia hasn't said it wants to host a large tournament) its not a proptary at the moment bt will be ready one day to host afcons , all-african games , southern african games .
we want our athletics to train and play on the best stadia in the world. just like the olympic center that was completed last year this will be for people of zambia

i was just giving an example why 1 would have 2 stadia so the older stadium will be used as a training pitch /rugby pitch/athletics pitch etc. main stadium will be used for soccer , concerts , gatherings etc.

but failed to deliver and grab the Cup because both the people and the Chipolopolo Boys including many other players were not motivated owing to poor infrastructures in the country."'

not really, this is a government financed project, not a club, of course would make more sence to have it ( as much I would prefer a soccer only stadium) they have to take as much benefit as possible of it.

But why 2 Formula tracks in a single city? Why more Formula tracks in every city?

How many times and how long do Track and field, Marathon held per year?

Besides. provincial track and field must be held at Univesities and Colleges Stadiums. Only the National event must be held in the largest stadium in the country.

But Africans are very wasteful and very narrow minded.

Football is the people's Game. The single sport with the most . So no. Building stadiums without Formula-1 tracks is not wasteful. Perhaps it is in Kenya though. that being the case, Kenya then should not bid to host AFCON 2019.

Who said they aren't rich? And they don't need to be rich to get founds to build a single multi purpose Stadium for Universities and Colleges in the city.

If there is anything Rich in Africa. Its Governments. Don't pretend to not know that.

Compared to the rest of the world they are dirt poor.Take away the revenues from natural resources and they are even poorer.

If there is anything Rich in Africa. Its Governments. Don't pretend to not know that.

Lets not house, feed and pay salaries to the people in order to have soccer only stadiums!Great logic Butembo.

thanks for the updates ya im not a fan of the tracks kills the atmosphere for soccer it makes sense to have them thou as some african cities don't have the capacity or money to have soccer only venues ..........awesome to see the stadium i'lll definaty take pics when i go home for the holidays next week

ps: don't think there is a formal bid for hosting the 2019 games not until the airport and a couple of other things get sorted out

all says that some states have no money for soccer specific stadiums, I understand it, when is one stadium in one city, but in this case thay can renovate old stadium with track for 20-30,000, and new stadium can be soccer specific, how many times per year is 50,000 attendance fot athletics...?? now will be 2 stadiums with track 50m apart.... :((((

The problem is Africans don't look far...

How many times is Track Tournament held per year? Only 1 time and lasts just 1 week.

Why have 2 track stadiums in a single city when track only held in just 1 stadia?

Besides, they build more Formula 1 stadia in other cities.

Building s small University Stadia of (20,000) with track wont hurt.

ps: don't think there is a formal bid for hosting the 2019 games not until the airport and a couple of other things get sorted out

I know Zambia needed the stadiums, but what I mean why build multiple stadiums with those Track and Field tracks.

An Olympic only Stadium costs more money than Football only stadiums. instead of building a 50,000 capacity Olympic. why not build a 40,000 football only and then a 10,000 seat small stadium with Tracks.

In some countries, the emphasis is not only in soccer. They want to win in the Olympics and other events so they build proper stadiums. :)

the main projects in zambia at the moment are in 3 infrastructure areas roads which has seen a huge boom , the other is mining and power stations . There a couple of office blocks and a new airport terminal in livingstone but its mainly in those 3 . The market isn't there just yet for large office or residential development.
