'Laughing My Ass Off'

Is that a real picture, even if it is old. That is CRAZY, who on earth needs that much parking....

HOUSTON, of course!

It's MEGANESS!

I would say 80% of all those empty lots are now filled with parks, the convention center, Houston V center, Minute Maid Park, Toyota Center, Hilton Americas, Inn at the ball park, and several restraunts.

Thats good, it looks like hell downtown in the 80's

That pic of Houston with all those spaces is Houston in the early 1980's around 81. Thats like 23 years ago. And I would say there is 10% space open now on that back end of downtown and thats even getting built.

Much of the area has seen development over the past 20 years but there is still an abundance of parking lots in the area. The Toyota Center, Minute Maid Park, The GRB Convention Center and the Hilton Americas Convention Center Hotel are the major develpments that have gone up since the first picture was taken. Here's what it looks like today:

Still, not the best example of urban land use, but slowly moving in the right direction.

Neat to see a kinda before and after, it would be cooler if the picteres were the same thing at the same angle to see the progress.

Aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh!!!! Good thing new buildings of today in downtown were built on top of those parking spaces. Nothing more than 30 blocks of black top that look like shit. Now I can revert mentally to today for block filling in the last three pics. *sigh of relief*

Well, the East side of DT shouled get a nice boost, since they are fixing up the park by the GRB, and with the abundance of parking spaces, they can hopefully redevelop those with nice urban infill (midrise res with retail, etc). Right. Hopefully, it happens.

This is shown in the Houston Construction & News thread in the southeast forum, not in projects & construction.

I thought that must have been a joke! Houston has cetainly came a long way; but I guess things like that are why it has such a bad reputation.
