Gertzy October 18th, 2004, 10:24 AM Here's a couple of UQ2 and the Mint Crane as well.

Joe October 18th, 2004, 01:39 PM Oriolus nice pics, what digi cam have you got?
Oriolus October 19th, 2004, 03:08 AM Joe - My camera is a Kodak DX6490 with 10x optical zoom & 4.1 megapixels - pretty nice - I was willing to pay $600 and got this one for $599!!
Gertzy - what kind of camera have you got?
Joe October 19th, 2004, 03:35 AM yeah 10x optical zoom seem to help a lot, the zoom onto the suncorp metway building is unreal. Keep takin those pics.
Gertzy October 19th, 2004, 05:19 AM Mine is a Kodak CX6230, I've had mine since about October last year. I actually got it for free as the original Camera I had, stuffed up a bit in terms of zoom (Meaning the zoom wouldn't work). I took it back to Troy Williams to get it sent back and repaired and to find they didn't make the model I had so they gave me a new one and I found later It was about $399.
GMAC October 19th, 2004, 05:37 AM Oriolus, I have the same camera as you. Its a great camera, Ive had mine since last November. One of the guys at work is a photographer and suggested it because of the german lenses, apparently they are really good. Im happy with mine but I think I still need some practice on some of my long distance shots.
Gertzy October 19th, 2004, 06:32 AM Another couple of pictures taken during my City Escapade Yesterday.

Oriolus October 23rd, 2004, 08:06 AM Mt Stuart, taken from JCU while waiting for a bus.
I read that the main tower is 160m but it was in a newspaper so its probably wrong :)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v376/Oriolus/MtStuart.jpg
Gertzy October 23rd, 2004, 09:49 AM I dont think its 160m but I think definatley that its over 100m in height.
Oriolus October 27th, 2004, 01:32 AM The sugar shaker reflected in Zurich

Gertzy October 27th, 2004, 08:58 AM I like that shot very much, nice job.
Oriolus November 4th, 2004, 03:26 AM An interesting angle down Anthony St, taken from the reservior above the Sturt St cutting

Wezza November 4th, 2004, 09:13 AM The pic looking down towards River Quays is Townsville's best effort at a skyscraper canyon! Lol :)
Oriolus November 4th, 2004, 09:20 AM Yeh, that's what I was thinking, although Quest and River Quays aren't even adjacent. If the 7 storey Ibis Hotel extends right back to Anthony St it'll look even better.
Blend November 4th, 2004, 09:33 AM http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v376/Oriolus/WalkerSt.jpg
My dad works in the low rise building in the centre of this shot (grid windows)
And i believe those two new resi towers r going up on the right hand side of the pic?
Oriolus November 4th, 2004, 10:06 AM That's the Commonwealth Centre with the grid windows. And you're right about Hedley's towers - the 20 storey one will go right between Walker House and State Goverment Offices across the road from Commonwealth Centre
Oriolus December 1st, 2004, 04:25 AM Townsville's first building of 5 storeys or more in the suburbs - Edgewater Apartments on the Ross River at Riverside Gardens. Could be more to come - 350 apartments are planned for the precinct, many 2&3 storey already completed but more up to 5 storeys on the way.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v376/Oriolus/Edgewater.jpg
Wezza December 1st, 2004, 09:31 AM That would be classed as a 4 story building wouldn't it? Usually the ground floor isn't counted. Either way, thats a nice addition to Riverside Gardens. Didn't even know about that one.
Oriolus December 3rd, 2004, 07:57 AM Took a real ball tearer (IMO) of both Mariners North and Jupiters yesterday - much better than last time I tried - it was the day all that smoke haze was about. Enjoy.

CULWULLA December 6th, 2004, 06:24 AM found this on the web. what is crane at left?
http://www.adagiomarine.com/year2002/images_townsville/image/dscn6183.jpg
CULWULLA December 6th, 2004, 06:28 AM Mt Stuart, taken from JCU while waiting for a bus.
I read that the main tower is 160m but it was in a newspaper so its probably wrong :)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v376/Oriolus/MtStuart.jpg
yes its correct at 160m. how far is it from CBD?
Wezza December 6th, 2004, 09:05 AM Cul, that crane is probably there from when Riviera Apartments were being bulit. They are about 4/5 stories. Nice looking apartments actually.
Gertzy December 6th, 2004, 01:47 PM Yeah, the Crane is from when Rivieria was being built back 2002/2003. Riveria is Two main Buildings, One being at 6/7 the other being at 5. Around 66 units overall.
Oriolus December 7th, 2004, 01:13 AM Thanks Cul - 160m wow, definately Townsville's tallest structure. It's about 10km from the CBD - amazing views from the lookout at the top, at 584m.
Riviera's two buildings are 7 and 6 storeys - 39 units all up I thought. I think I see Highpoint UC on on the hill in that pic. Is that 21 Stokes below it - I didn't know it used to be cream.
Gertzy December 7th, 2004, 01:05 PM So, Mt Stuart with the Tower is 744m in height. Pretty amazing. 21 Stokes used to be Cream alright. Had it repainted around 2003.
Oriolus December 12th, 2004, 04:31 AM Here's an different kind of pic - the tip of Holiday Inn seen over a rise in upper Denham St (on Stanton Hill)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v376/Oriolus/HolInnoverDenham.jpg
Gertzy December 12th, 2004, 12:40 PM Are you talking about Hale street area etc around there anyway or near St James Cathederal area.
Oriolus December 13th, 2004, 01:57 AM Yep, its taken from the corner of Denham & Hale - just past the top of thoses steps which lead up to Stanton Hill from Wills St, near the GPD Tower site.
Gertzy December 13th, 2004, 03:45 AM Okay yep, Is there anymore news on GPD Tower so far or is it still the same.
Oriolus December 13th, 2004, 03:59 AM I walked past yesterday - no DA sign up. Maybe they think the new City Plan will be more sympathetic to their development and are waiting till Jan 1 (when it comes in) to submit. I mean the news first broke in May - 6 months ago - how long does it take design a friggin 23 storey building :D
Gertzy December 14th, 2004, 02:40 AM I was also reading somewhere that they are working with YWCA with the plan of the Tower as to comply wit h their side of it as their accomodation and that is going to be torn down.
Oriolus January 3rd, 2005, 05:35 AM Took this photo this morning of the 4 guyed masts at Cape Cleveland - don't know who owns them or how tall they are but I reckon at least 100 metres high. They're between the eastern coast of Cape Cleveland and the AIMS Road (Aust Institute of Marine Science), about 40 minutes south of Townsville (east as the crow flies)
Two in centre, 2 more further back to the left
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v376/Oriolus/CapeClevelandMasts.jpg
Gertzy January 3rd, 2005, 10:55 AM I've never noticed them before, I go to Cungulla (Also on the East coast of Cape Cleveland) alot fishing with usually my uncle, dad, brother and cousins but I've never seen them before.
goschio January 6th, 2005, 03:01 AM Nice pics, can't wait to visit that city!
Oriolus January 7th, 2005, 12:42 AM The Sugar Shaker looms in the background from the desolation of a new housing estate. (Fairfield Waters)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v376/Oriolus/HolinnFairfield.jpg
Gertzy January 7th, 2005, 01:45 PM Thats a nice one, imagine if it were to be say around 150m mark, you'd see it from Stuart (You can now but even better if it were around 150m
Oriolus February 4th, 2005, 06:31 AM First person to tell me what's wrong with this picture gets a prize!!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v376/Oriolus/HPlace.jpg
It's a real picture from an article about the history of H Place Furniture in foreground.
Gertzy February 4th, 2005, 07:59 AM Stanley Street premises prior to Cyclone Althea. If The sugar shaker was built 76 and Cyclone Althea happened in 71, then that photo has the wrong date.
Blue_Copper February 4th, 2005, 01:22 PM oh thanks for this thread i really have a good idea of the sky line now.
Oriolus February 5th, 2005, 01:14 AM No worries petermaloney - good to know some southerners do read this froums
You're right Gertzy - neither sugar shaker, Commonwealth Bank or Ogden St carpark were built before Althea. I think this is actually a photo of a later H Place premises near cnr of Stanley & Hanran, where Urban Quarter shopping centre is now.
Here's your prize!

Oriolus February 17th, 2005, 09:48 AM Urban Quarter from Castle Hill

Anyone know why that empty block on right was left out of the development - I wonder who owns it & what their plans are.
Gertzy February 17th, 2005, 12:26 PM I'm jumping that fence to get a photo of Mint from the Balcony thing at the top of the staircase on UQ1. Infact, when was that picture taken.
Oriolus February 17th, 2005, 02:57 PM Pic was taken Sunday (13/2/05) afternoon, about 3pm
Gertzy February 18th, 2005, 02:39 PM I've got a good idea for a great Townsville CBD pic. This will be hard for me though. What anybody should do, is book a night at the Holiday Inn and with that, your Keycard gets you into the pool deck and that would be an ideal place for a good shot.
As well you get a night at a 4 star hotel.
Gertzy February 18th, 2005, 02:43 PM Quest looks like a very ideal place, but the good thing is, you don't need to spend the night there or anything. You can walk right through the reception and onto the Tenth floor Balcony or if you want to have your visit unknown, there is the two Stairways to the sides of the reception area, infact, in the car park.
Gertzy February 18th, 2005, 02:48 PM My Dad can get access to Centrelink after hours etc and this is Stanley Place, even from the Sixth floor, you can get great views, maybe not Million Dollar, infact, I have many stories of Highpoint UC from there. On some occasions, I came into Stanley Place when Highpoint was UC and on many occasions, someone would yell out "The crane is moving" and straight after that, all you can see is heads turning to look at The Crane. Many people were disapointed when the crane was Dismantled.
But with his keycard, I can get access to the Higher floors of the Centrelink Quoient of Stanley place but I won't go after hours.
Gertzy February 18th, 2005, 02:55 PM Melton Terrace
Wulguru, more raised up the hill.
Stuart, on the Highway
are noticable picturesque places.
I am writing this all down mainly because Iam Tired, Its Friday night and I'm thinking of many to get an out of the ordinary picture. Disregard anything I say unless you really would like to try these spots etc.
Wezza February 21st, 2005, 09:24 AM I have a few friends that live in Highpoint in the back building. It's a good view from up there.
Gertzy February 21st, 2005, 11:12 AM Railway Estate Overpass is also a great place.
Oriolus March 1st, 2005, 12:01 AM Townsville in 1897 - incredible huh.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v376/Oriolus/City1897.jpg
The tallest building at the time looks to have been the old Scott, Dawson & Stewart Building, which still stands today.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v376/Oriolus/ScottDawsonStewart.jpg
The School of Arts Building is the only other surviver I can see (corner of Walker & Stanley, at left). Across the road from Scott Dawson & Stewart must be the Hollis Hopkins Building, demolished to make way for Suncorp Plaza.
Gertzy March 1st, 2005, 07:18 AM Thats where, Purcell Taylor Lawyers are and North Queensland Women's legal service is. My Friends dad works at Purcell Taylor and My Mum is part of NQWLS.

Gertzy March 11th, 2005, 09:14 AM Thats a nice Photo.
Wezza March 14th, 2005, 09:10 AM I was at a friends place yesterday out at "The Heights" at Wulguru. They have an excellent view from their pool deck. I just wish i had a good digi camera with a big zoom on it. Could get a really good pano of the skyline from there!! :)
Oriolus March 14th, 2005, 09:24 AM I was up Mt Stuart yesterday and I got some good photos of the skyline - a 10x zoom really helps from so far away. I'm going to do a thread in City Images forum soon with a couple of different panos - will include it in that.
Wezza March 14th, 2005, 10:31 AM Cool. Can't wait to see it.
Gertzy March 15th, 2005, 08:15 AM That Townsville Panos Thread of yours is awesome Oriolus.
Oriolus March 28th, 2005, 11:18 PM I have no idea what this is but the view is nice anyway
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v376/Oriolus/CBDRuins.jpg
Gertzy March 29th, 2005, 03:19 AM I also dont have a very clear idea of what it is but however I think its some old Brick Shed which I'm sure has been there for ages.
Wezza March 29th, 2005, 08:53 AM Did you take that Oriolus? Thats right next to that water tank on the hill. I often see people sitting there taking in the views when i'm at my friends place at Highpoint.
Gertzy March 29th, 2005, 10:54 AM Looks like he probably did, nice photo which I forgot to say :).
Oriolus April 8th, 2005, 07:05 AM Did you take that Oriolus? Thats right next to that water tank on the hill. I often see people sitting there taking in the views when i'm at my friends place at Highpoint.
Yep, took it months ago - you can see Mint is yet to get off the ground.

Gertzy April 8th, 2005, 08:23 AM Both Nicely Done :).
Rodie April 16th, 2005, 07:38 PM These pics look great, I just wish the people who run Townsville would put a large multi-level shopping plaza in the city centre or something - that is all it needs, then the other smaller shops surrounding would gain too (that is if they werent included in the plaza already).Parking is a problem?....why not build some multi-level carparks?.... I shudder when i hear about the mayor visiting down south to gain info about "successful/unsuccessful malls". The answer is so obvious. Cairns wins hands down for inner city action. And years ago they took willows water world away....Townsville had a small but reasonable theme park......unfortunately unless you are 2.5, the strand water park is nothing in comparison. I wish this city would move forward for once instead of backwards.
CanadianCentaur April 16th, 2005, 08:21 PM Townsville looks nicer than I thought! I notice that it does look like it has a much drier climate than Cairns - it seems like there's tropical savanna rather than rainforest surrounding Townsville despite it being on the same coast as Cairns.
How far is Townsville south from Cairns by car? And how fast is it growing compared to Cairns?
Rodie April 16th, 2005, 08:43 PM Townsville looks extremely dry in these photo's however it really depends on the time of year. At the moment the surroundings are beautiful because of recent rainfall.
Townsville is situated on a dry part of the coast...unfortunately the majority of rainfall
happens 20kms north and south of the city....if you want to view the rainforests in the Townsville region, only a short drive to mt spec is required.
Townsville is about a 3.5hr drive sth of Cairns by car.
Not sure about the Cairns growth rate, but Townsville's is booming.
Gertzy April 17th, 2005, 02:49 AM These pics look great, I just wish the people who run Townsville would put a large multi-level shopping plaza in the city centre or something - that is all it needs, then the other smaller shops surrounding would gain too (that is if they werent included in the plaza already).
Thats what I've said before in the Townsville Projects Thread, But I'm designing my own Shopping Centre which I'll probably send to some developers, Palleranda Centre. It'll Include like some Fun Park or Waterpark there as well as an area for Commercial and Residential development.
Gertzy April 17th, 2005, 03:05 AM Townsville looks nicer than I thought! I notice that it does look like it has a much drier climate than Cairns - it seems like there's tropical savanna rather than rainforest surrounding Townsville despite it being on the same coast as Cairns.
How far is Townsville south from Cairns by car? And how fast is it growing compared to Cairns?
We've still got Rainforest, Down 20km south at Mt Elliot, 20km North on Magnetic Island, and 20km West and North-West with some patches on Hervey's Range, and practically all along the Bruce Highway, but Townsville/Thuringowa's patch of Rainforest along the Highway is at Paluma. Townsville is literally surronded by Tropical Savanna. Alot it has been Cleared for Housing Developments like Annandale, which is located on Savanna.
Townsville is like some 364km/south of Cairns, Rodie said its about 3.5 hours but thats non-stop, It take me about 5 because I stop at Ingham and Tully. Townsville is growing at around 6000 ppl a year and aparantly Cairns is growing at around 7500 a year.
Oriolus April 18th, 2005, 05:05 AM Townsville is growing at around 6000 ppl a year and aparantly Cairns is growing at around 7500 a year.
What's your source on that Gertzy, The Cairns Post? :D
Here's the data I got from ABS, for the period 30 June 2003-30 June 2004:
Population Townsville 155 371 Cairns 125 132
Growth Rate Townsville 2.286% Cairns 2.292%
Population Change Townsville 3473 people Cairns 2804 people
So Cairns has higher growth rate (marginally) but Townsville gets more people each year so will continue to pull away from Cairns. In 20 years (2024) based on that data:
Townsville 244 170 Cairns 196 880
By 2054:
Townsville 481 038 Cairns 388 554
By 2084:
Townsville 947 687 Cairns 766 834
But remember thats just one year, growth rates can and will change so the projections are just pure speculation.
Oriolus April 18th, 2005, 05:09 AM Here's a shot taken yesterday of the Museum of Tropical Queensland in Flinders St East:

Malt April 18th, 2005, 08:13 AM been to that museum.
Gertzy April 18th, 2005, 08:20 AM Alot of people have even from Sydney.
Wezza April 18th, 2005, 10:05 AM I thought Gertzy's population growth figures seemed a bit inflated!! Lol I don't think Adelaide is even growing that fast!! ;)

Wezza June 20th, 2005, 10:24 AM Haha. I'm over it.
Oriolus June 21st, 2005, 07:30 AM A giant model of a Silver Orb Spider has recently been hung across Flinders St East outside the Museum of Tropical Queensland. As a result many arachnaphobes feel they can no longer drive down Flinders St East :)

Gertzy June 21st, 2005, 08:20 AM What about the Spider hanging off the pole on Upper Ross river road, infact, speaking of Silver Orbs, there was one nesting above the Control panel of the Qantas Aerobridge at the Airport.
hopper June 22nd, 2005, 08:25 AM Hi all
I have been dipping into this forum for a while now - thought it was about time I make a contribution. Here are some satellite images of Townsville I got through the JCU website. Enjoy.

Oriolus June 27th, 2005, 03:05 AM Wow Tango, didn't know you were in South Korea. I've tried to find some info on Tongyeong but there seems to very little on the net. Pop is aparantely about 130,000?

I have been dipping into this forum for a while now - thought it was about time I make a contribution. Here are some satellite images of Townsville I got through the JCU website. Enjoy.
Thanks hopper, those are amazing, particularly the ones that show topography. Has anyone ever looked at aerial photos with a 3D viewer - its like a stand with a set of mirrors and magerfiers that you place over an aerial photo that allows the topograhic, features (inlcuding skyscrapers) to stand out off the page, except its greatly exxagerated. So Castle Hill looks like Balls Pyramid and Holiday Inn looks at least 200m. It was unreal, wish I had one.
Gertzy June 27th, 2005, 08:16 AM Tongyeong, looks to be pretty close to Seoul or Pusan, due to all the pollution about in the air.
Oriolus July 27th, 2005, 07:50 AM The cities two tallest buildings rise over the Masonic Temple in Walker St, built in 1933 if I know my Roman numerals.
http://img261.imageshack.us/img261/3667/masonic4ag.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Gertzy July 27th, 2005, 08:00 AM Yep, Its is built in 1933, MCMXXXIII (1933), So yep, correct there.
Oriolus July 27th, 2005, 08:10 AM Gotta love buildings that have the year they were built written on the front - no in depth research necessary. What would be good is if skyscrapers had there height written above the doorway :)
Gertzy July 27th, 2005, 08:21 AM In GTA: San Andreas, In San Fierro (San Fran chuck off), theres the Big Pointy Building (Transamerica Pyramid chuck off but exact shape and design) there is a sign on each side of the building that has the facts of the buildings, even though its just a chuck off facts sign with things like "MB used to make building" and "Square Polygons used to shape building" etc, they should have fact signs at the side of the main entrance but just with things like "The Name of Building", "Height", "Year Built" and who owns the building etc.

I actually like that Waterfront Promenade, Its a bit deserted though most times but its pretty good, Bloody Green though.
Oriolus August 2nd, 2005, 02:14 AM The wall of apartments that is Aquarius. I wonder how many objections would be lodged if someone proposed something like that on the Strand today.........damn NIMBY's
http://img226.imageshack.us/img226/1272/aquarius9qv.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Gertzy August 2nd, 2005, 11:37 AM I'm sick of people saying that their "ocean" view is ruined when they have something in the road that might obstruct their view, damn richies on Yarrawonga, complain that their money is not living to expectation.
TangoSierraVictor August 6th, 2005, 04:02 PM @ Oriolus & Gertzy
Yep, sorry it's taken me so long to post but yeah I am indeed in Tongyeong. The images you posted I have driven through on the bus on my way into the city and work..
Tongyeong is a fairly nice city, lots of big apartment blocks more or less like the Aquarius on the strand, but not as picturesque. I live in a "littl'y" apartment block, 3 floors including a fairly large roof top where u can go and take in the view etc. Quite a few times have i gone up there to catch some air, have my coffee and smoke some Korean cigarettes....(and by the way smoking is bad!). The bridge in the first picture is a really bright blue and at night it lights up really, really well. There is another bridge (as seen in the second pic), a white one, and i'll try to get some pics of it and the city before i depart (i am flying back 2 oz on the 3rd of Sep)
Yep, Tongyeong has about 130000-150000 people here. And quite a few elderly in the population, definitely a lot more than you notice in Townsville. And the funny thing is they are still working, at like 70 years of age..dunno if i want to be doing that hahaha.
The biggest buildings here would be the apartment blocks, the biggest of which appear to be about 15 stories. The commercial office blocks are mostly between 8 and 13 stories. Oh and Tongyeong is 5 hours by bus to Seoul, so the distance from TSV to CNS is somewhat roughly the same length of South Korea.
Oh and yes Gertzy hahaha about the Yarrawonga residents. I don't know how they could live there..the roads are terrifying! And it's like some affectationalists say "I live on one level...why build up when you can go sideways?" :hahaha: but :ohno:
Tango
Oriolus August 8th, 2005, 02:38 AM Wow, thanks for sharing Tango (from someone whos never been overseas). Must be quite a culture shock?
I chucked together some photos of bank buildings in Townsville in an idle moment yesterday - the Big 4 all have offices in Townsville, as does Bendigo Bank.
http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/1121/bankss4wd.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Gertzy August 8th, 2005, 07:30 AM That bank building one is awesome :)
TangoSierraVictor August 9th, 2005, 05:05 AM Hi Gertzy
Actually the culture shock hasn't been as bad as most were saying it would be...there have just been some things that shocked me a little bit (and i have a feeling they would be unique to a smaller city, anywhere in the world).
All in all though it's ok.
TangoSierraVictor
Gertzy August 9th, 2005, 08:54 AM So why are you actually in Tongyeong at the moment Tango.
TangoSierraVictor August 9th, 2005, 02:43 PM I'm teaching English here, it's a really big industry in Asian countries. I think the biggest would be South Korea and Japan.
Tango
Gertzy August 12th, 2005, 12:46 PM Okay, My old Maths Teacher came to my school straight from Bali teaching English at the Australian Intl School.
Oriolus August 15th, 2005, 02:29 AM The Wharton Reef Lighthouse, operational in Princess Charlotte Bay until 1990, now on display on the roundabout at corner of Palmer & Plume Sts.

Read all about it here:
http://www.lighthouse.net.au/liGhTS/QLD/Wharton%20Reef/Wharton%20Reef.htm
Gertzy August 15th, 2005, 09:21 AM Really, I thought that that light house was there before 1990 and was at the port or Maggie Island or used to be for the Maritime Mueseum and so on.
Oriolus August 18th, 2005, 04:17 AM ^^ Actually according to that link it was only put on that roundabout in 1996.
Here's a photo from Melton Hill taken on Tuesday

Also featuring the Law Courts in the forground (also seen in my previous photo)
hopper August 21st, 2005, 10:09 AM The Law Courts building is one of the stranger designs in town isn't it? Does anyone know who designed it?? I kind of like its bizarreness, even if it does look a bit run down with water stains, etc.
Gertzy August 22nd, 2005, 07:29 AM Probably the same guy who designed TCC Administration Building. They kinda look similar in design as well, They were probably also built at the same time as each other too.
Oriolus August 23rd, 2005, 01:29 AM I quite like it - the Edmund Sheppard Law Courts were opened on 10th October, 1975.
http://img399.imageshack.us/img399/1206/lawcourts6ec.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
The old Supreme Court (http://www.townsville.qld.gov.au/about/heritage/_propDetails.asp?) in Cleveland Terrace (site of Cleveland Views & Melton Crest) closed a few weeks earlier.
I think Townsville City Council Chambers opened in 1976. Don't know the architects for either buildign though.
Gertzy August 23rd, 2005, 01:47 AM 1976 sounds pretty right for The City Council Admin Building and Chambers, Because the Table (Round Table, Large Table or so on) in the Middle of the Chambers says Table refurbished and Moved to the New Townsville City Council Chambers, Stokes Street 1977, from the old Chambers on Flinders Street and so on.
TangoSierraVictor August 23rd, 2005, 06:50 AM Does anyone have any pics or info on the old Westpac bank in Garbutt? (is now a video shop). The building is really interesting to look at. I remember being a kid and going in there with my mum lots of times in the 80s and early/mid 90s. I like the place.
Tango
Gertzy August 23rd, 2005, 08:46 AM The only info I have on it is that its now Civic Video (as you said) but thats pretty much all I can give.

I don't have any photos sorry. But i do believe this building will be bulldozed when/if the redvelopment of the shopping precinct there in Garbutt goes ahead.

I think the international area in TSV is safe for now. Could do with an update though.
Oriolus August 24th, 2005, 02:30 PM Actually Tango Garbutt Shopping Centre is being completely redeveloped but I don't think that building is being demolished. A quote from the Sun, 10/8/05:
The development project was originally due to start with the demolition of the National Bank building on the corner of Ingham Rd & Douglas St on June 27. Mr Simpson said on-site construction would now begin in the last week of August.
- It says corner of Douglas, not Gordon, which is where the building concerned is
- It says National, not Westpac (and anyway they'd refer to it as Civic Video now, its no longer a bank)
I don't have any pics but looks like its safe for the time being. But is there a National Bank on the corner of Douglas?

TangoSierraVictor August 25th, 2005, 05:20 AM there is a national bank opposite the kfc i think. although hasn't been operated as a walk-in bank for many years, just the atm maintained (since bank has closed, a lifeline/st vincent shop has been there but might've closed).
further down ingham road there used to be an anz bank, although like the nat one the office has been disused for quite a while. only the atm has been maintained. place wasn't stripped though- the counters still remain in place.
Tango
Gertzy August 26th, 2005, 11:51 AM Yep, Thats the one there Tango, National was in that building across from KFC There, I like the photo there Orio, showing the top of Holiday Inn looking all the way out to Mt Stuart, and Tango, If you have a Camera, could you take a few pictures of Kansai when you transit through, please.
JayT August 26th, 2005, 12:05 PM Can honestly say I'm very tempted to move to Townsville right now. I've always had a thing about the tropics - are there plenty of Planning jobs up there at the moment?
Give me an apartment with a view over the CBD and Cleveland Bay with a variety of Palm Trees, and it must have Coconut Palms in the view and Ill be happy.
MMMmmm - tempted..
Gertzy August 26th, 2005, 01:37 PM Try T1, Overlooks the CBD except out more to Cleveland Bay than Maggie but still good scenary, Palm trees probably part of Apartments Pool deck Landscaping but some on street level.
TangoSierraVictor August 26th, 2005, 02:04 PM Gertzy
I have a camera- but it's not a digital. I'll look into buying one either now or on duty free. Either way I'll get some pics.
Tango
Gertzy August 27th, 2005, 07:05 AM Ok, Cool :), no worries.
Oriolus August 29th, 2005, 03:17 AM I'm not sure about planning jobs JayT, but if it's palm trees you want then this is the place to come. You know about the Palmetum? - its a botanic gardens in Townsville devoted mainly to palm trees - they have about 300 species on display from around the world - fantastic place.

Gertzy August 29th, 2005, 10:32 AM I thought you were talking about that the Palmetum was in your photo there and I was thinking what is he talking about, the Palmetums in Annandale, not in the city, I ride past every day to go to school, but now I see you where talking about it, sorry :D
Oriolus September 1st, 2005, 05:31 AM Ah, does appear a bit like that. It's just a photo of palm trees and highrises to lure JayT north :D

Oriolus September 9th, 2005, 04:08 AM Alright - another Townsvillean. That's about 8 we've got on here now. Anyway welcome to the forum mellemolly. Where abouts you living now?

Wanna do me a huge favour? If you do, can you please take a photo of the two houses on the corner of craftsman street in Rosslea. Used to be mine and my grandparents house. that's what I really need to see. If you can't be arsed, not to worry. Cheers!

Make it a park or somethng.
Ala kangaroo point without the river.

Oriolus September 14th, 2005, 04:01 AM Yeh I agree Malt. Although it would be underutilised as a park I think. I've always thought they should build a multi-storey carpark up to the height of the cliff in there. Or at least seal it - it's definately fugly as a gravel carpark.

Oriolus September 28th, 2005, 01:52 AM I don't know how that place stays open. I never see anyone around. Last time I went was last year I think - there were 6 people in the whole place. It's pretty amazing experience though, musts go again some time. If they started showing movies there attendance would go through the roof.
Oriolus September 28th, 2005, 02:46 AM I've never seen a photo of the Hollis Hopkins Building that previously occupied the site of Suncorp Plaza but part of the facade survives in the plaza next to Suncorp.
http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/5769/1004501s6mo.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
The plaque reads:
Hollis Hopkins Place
This pediment originally formed the topmost parapet finishing the gable end of the roof over the Hollis Hopkins warehouse which oocupied the site of the Suncorp Plaza building from 1886 to June 1982.
Hollis Hopkins & Co. Ltd. opened for business in Flinders Street in November 1881 after aquiring the wholesales drapery department of Burns Phillip & Co. and Aplin Brown & Co.
The Sturt Street warehouse was built to two stroreys in 1886, a third floor and this pediment were added in 1888.
The device forming the centrepiece represents a ram stuffs and suspended by a collar and is known as the 'Golden Fleece', an emblem of commerce
This pediment was restored and placed on this site as part of the redevelopment and construction of Suncorp Plaza.
In this 1987 photo you can see Hollis Hopkins opposite the old Commonwealth Centre which was then the tallest building in town.

No thats OK - I love looking at the Townsville shots, there great! I've heard of the Sovereign Hotel many times but have never seen it. Great shots there people.
Oriolus October 13th, 2005, 08:18 AM The sugar shaker - often thought of as a round biulding but technically its not. As you can see here its actually made up of straight sides - 28 of them (unless I made a mistake when I was walking around the base trying to keep count :))
Until someone finds a taller one I'm declaring it the tallest 28-sided building in the world. :D
http://img295.imageshack.us/img295/820/1003259s3mw.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Gertzy October 13th, 2005, 09:42 AM When they were building the sugar shaker, it had a round core, not a 28 sided core, infact I think its the only building in TSV to have a core during construction.
Oriolus October 14th, 2005, 05:57 AM ^^Stanley Place had a core projecting above the rest of the building. I scanned these from "Character of Townsville" a book of Townsville photos from 1992.

Wezza October 14th, 2005, 10:12 AM Has anyone seen any pics of the Sugar Shaker when it was U/C?
Gertzy October 14th, 2005, 11:08 AM Yeah, there were some in the city library at the back with that exhibit thing with the tv screens and such. And wasn't there that one where oriolus placed with Commonwealth, Metro Quays, and Holiday Inn UC.
Oriolus October 24th, 2005, 03:19 AM I had a look for Holiday Inn construction pics at that local history exhibit at the city library - couldn't find any. But I did find something which rewrote my view of local skyscraper history. On the round wall in the middle of the libary there was a photo of the Strand after Cyclone Althea (Christmas 1971) and in the background was......Aquarius!! It looked like it had topped out but was still under construction. So it wasn't completed in 1990 - it would have been completed in 1972 and therefore it was Townsville's tallest building from 1972 to 1976 when Holiday Inn was completed.
Wezza October 24th, 2005, 04:29 AM ^^
Aquarius is an old building alright!! What made you think it was completed in 1990? Is that what it has on Emporis? 1990 is about when it became known as Aquarius, probably a bit after that actually. It was originally a Travelodge i think.
Oriolus October 24th, 2005, 04:50 AM Yeh, cause it says 1990 on Emporis and I'd never found any evidence that that was wrong. Although I did have an inkling because I'd read a lot about the controversy surrounding Seaview Gardens which was proposed about the same time but there was never any mention of another highrise supposedly under construction in North Ward.
I remember it being the Travelodge. Aquarius was the Travelodge before Holiday Inn was right? It's also been the Ambassador - was that's it's original name?
Wezza October 24th, 2005, 07:15 AM I'm sure it was originally a Travelodge, then maybe Ambassador, Holiday Inn & Aquarius. It may have even been a Travelodge twice throughout it's history, don't quote me on that though.
Oriolus October 24th, 2005, 07:32 AM ^^ So Aquarius was a Holiday Inn at one stage as well??
Here's a pic taken from the mural reservoir above the cutting dominated by The Playpen - formerly Lion Brewery, built in 1894. I'm thinking it might actually have been Townsville's tallest building until T&G in c.1955. Looks taller than Federation Place (built to full height in 1889, and probably tallest until Lion Brewery)
http://img465.imageshack.us/img465/3481/1004511s4cx.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Wezza October 24th, 2005, 09:17 AM Yes, i'm fairly sure it was Holiday Inn at one stage.
I've noticed the Playpen over the past week has had doors open, don't know whats going on there, if anything....
Gertzy October 24th, 2005, 12:02 PM Yeah, I've seen that Picture too (with Aquarius and Cyclone Althea), and I'm fairly sure that some of it was knocked off Althea too.

Oriolus October 31st, 2005, 02:37 AM ^^Building a brand new hospital that was smaller than the existing hospital in a city with strong population growth was an interesting decision...

Gertzy October 31st, 2005, 06:29 AM I like the New Pagoda, very interesting, but just, I wonder what we'll be giving back as a a gift. A giant Vegemite structure could be a possibility.
Wezza October 31st, 2005, 09:14 AM The old hospital was a pretty poor facility though. But yeah, building a new, smaller hospital does seem a bit odd.
Gertzy November 1st, 2005, 06:29 AM They need to hire better trained Staff and alot more of em and Build say a new block connected to the main building, maybe 500 beds.
Its a good Facility but badly Managed and Operated.
Oriolus November 2nd, 2005, 02:42 AM You know who Townsville should establish a sister city relationship with - Townsville, North Carolina. Population 146
This is the only photo I could find of it :)

JayT November 2nd, 2005, 03:13 AM The sugar shaker - often thought of as a round biulding but technically its not. As you can see here its actually made up of straight sides - 28 of them (unless I made a mistake when I was walking around the base trying to keep count :))
Until someone finds a taller one I'm declaring it the tallest 28-sided building in the world. :D

Cool pics there - BTW, those balconies don't look very safe. They look a little thin.
Danubis November 2nd, 2005, 05:17 AM ^^Building a brand new hospital that was smaller than the existing hospital in a city with strong population growth was an interesting decision...
patient turn around times have improved over the past decade or so... people take less time to recover from operations that used to require them to stay in hospital for prolonged periods of time, hence requireing extensive physical bed space... this is no longer the case, and most hospitals have downsized their bed capacity... building bigger hospitals isnt necessary and is not the solution... they're already big enough (most are too big). most problems lie in beurocratic effiency and staffing the hospital departments that already exist.
Gertzy November 2nd, 2005, 07:47 AM Townsville NC, Reminds me of a place called New Zealand :D.
Wezza November 2nd, 2005, 09:09 AM Cool pics there - BTW, those balconies don't look very safe. They look a little thin.
They've been there for a long time now!! None have fallen off yet.........touch wood. ;)

Gertzy November 4th, 2005, 09:45 AM Thats a good one, Makes Townsville look alot more Foresty and Tropical than what it looks like now.
Oriolus November 22nd, 2005, 06:39 AM Typical Flinders St West fugliness:
First of all, why would someone demolish half a building, and secondly, why would someone demolish half a building for THAT!!
http://img503.imageshack.us/img503/8862/1004679s3dq.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Wezza November 22nd, 2005, 11:57 AM 90% of Flinders St west needs demolishing IMO. With the good 10% being Sanctuary On Flinders. Hopefully something will be done with alot of thos buildings once the old railyards undergo redevelopment.
On another Flinders St west development, i'm not sure how reopening the Playpen is going to go. Especially with a name like Bombay Rock..........It may as well be called Bogan Rock. Any nightclub that plays rock you won't be catching me in!! lol
GoTroppo November 22nd, 2005, 02:09 PM On another Flinders St west development, i'm not sure how reopening the Playpen is going to go. Especially with a name like Bombay Rock..........It may as well be called Bogan Rock. I'm also stumped by this one because the "For Sale" signs are still posted at the front door. Was the full page spread in the Bully more wishful thinking?
Gertzy November 23rd, 2005, 08:45 AM Developers probably will see the potential for development in Flinders Street West, especially when all this development keeps going on in the city.
Wezza November 23rd, 2005, 09:29 AM I'm also stumped by this one because the "For Sale" signs are still posted at the front door. Was the full page spread in the Bully more wishful thinking?
I think the signs have since been removed?? There has been some action there over the past few days. The doors have been open & i saw a guy taking down the old Playpen license sign this afternoon. It is an excellent layout inside, i just hope they do the right thing with the place & set it up right. And don't play rock & top 40 crap when it finally opens! Lol
Gertzy November 25th, 2005, 08:22 AM Whats wrong with Rock, Top 40 stuff is alright too, but theres some crap like Crazy Frog thats Crap. The Type of Rock that gets on my nerve is that Emo Crap.
Wezza November 27th, 2005, 10:21 PM Yes crazy frog is rot. Some rock music is ok, but it just seems as though any club which plays rock & cheezy top 40 seems to attract a bogan crowd.
Gertzy November 28th, 2005, 06:28 AM Well, that is true, same with alot of functions and Parties, Bogans just seem to turn up. Nightclubs, Discos, any type of party, Bogans are there.
Wezza November 28th, 2005, 09:23 AM ^^
Thats why i like going to clubs who don't let people like that in. It's a bit hard in Townsville, down south is alot better though.
Oriolus November 29th, 2005, 12:23 AM ^^Someone was bound to mention Townsville in this (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=286667) thread. Probably a good thing it was closed. :)

Gertzy November 29th, 2005, 05:45 AM Make our CBD look alot more Tropical, than derilict (did i spell this right) at most places, but its still pretty good, still itching to see on of the CBD from Tom Aitken Though.
Oriolus November 30th, 2005, 04:35 AM When I'm walking around the CBD I'm still thinking, 'wow you can see the T1 crane from here', and taking a photo. Here's one of them, with Stanley Place, Plaza Hotel and Connolly Suthers Building.
http://img107.imageshack.us/img107/7682/1005286s6vq.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Gertzy November 30th, 2005, 07:16 AM Thats a good angle, I can see my work from here, on the bottom right. You'll probably be able to see the T1 Crane from alot more places soon when it rises to 65m or so to finish the job.
Gertzy December 20th, 2005, 09:27 AM Here's a photo I took from Wollies in the City yesterday Afternoon.
Not that great as Oriolus's photos though but worth a try :)

Gertzy January 9th, 2006, 02:39 AM I've got a whole heap of Photos taken yesterday from Rosslea and Fairfield Waters, a few are of the CBD from Rosslea, I'll upload them ASAP.
Gertzy January 9th, 2006, 12:57 PM Here's a pic of the CBD from Rosslea, Was Fishing on the River with my Cousins (Not Really, they were, I had a throw in the water and left the line there and forgot about fishing and took photos while my Brother and Cousins fished). I was amazed that you could just point out and see the T1 crane in the skyline.
Sorry about the Quality, looks all pixelated and Crap.

Enjoy.
Gertzy January 9th, 2006, 01:13 PM Here's some photos I took around Fairfield, mainly of Development around the Northview Lake Area, was fishing around there (After going fishing near the Golf Club at Rosslea) with my Brother so took some pics.

Oriolus January 10th, 2006, 04:18 AM I was in the exact same spot as the second photo a couple of days ago. I was looking at some Chestnut-breasted Mannikins in the grass on the right :)

Oriolus January 12th, 2006, 01:50 AM Townsville's new look City Loop bus going past The Bank Niteclub on Flinders St East
http://img471.imageshack.us/img471/4364/cityloopbus3ky.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Wezza January 12th, 2006, 09:49 AM ^^
Wish someone would move into the shops just down from the Bank (Townzone building etc) & renovate that crappy old shop right next door to the bank as well. There is an old guy that site in the dark in the doorway at night time of that shop & if you tap on the glass he goes off!! Lol. Well, he used to anyway, don't know if he's still there. :)
Oriolus January 14th, 2006, 05:20 AM ^^Yeh I wish someone would renovate The Queens Building - it's the only building on Flinders St East that isn't in good nick. I don't know how that little hairdresser/tobacconist/tourist information/souvenir & gift shop stays in business. It looks like something straight out of the fifties - internally as well.

Gertzy January 14th, 2006, 11:49 PM Don't mind that new scheme on the City LOOP buses actually, painting over the windows though is abit stupid in my opinion.
Oriolus January 16th, 2006, 01:52 AM Don't mind that new scheme on the City LOOP buses actually, painting over the windows though is abit stupid in my opinion. You can still see out the windows, just not as well. It's like a little matrix of dots all over the window.
Now, spot the CityLoop bus in this photo :D

Wezza January 16th, 2006, 09:49 AM Hey Oriolus, i was out at the refuse tip on the highway south of Townsville yesterday, if you're ever looking for a good spot for an excellent panorama of the city & surrounding, head up onto the public tip on the hill there. It would have to have one of the best views of Townsville!! Pity its a bloody dump though! lol
Oriolus January 18th, 2006, 02:50 AM ^^Probably similiar to the view you get from the Bruce Highway as you come into the city from the south is it? You come over the rise near Southwood Rd and there's the skyline laid out in the distance. You know you're home when you see that view.
Another Zurich reflection, this time Suncorp Plaza. Anyone know how Zurich House gets it's name - it must have been built by a company called Zurich, although I've never heard of it?
http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/4162/1005844s8tx.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
mrlaxative January 18th, 2006, 04:51 AM It's an insurance/financial services company who originally occupied the building. I believe they may still own the building. See http://www.zurich.com.au.
There is actually an identical building, albeit taller, in Brisbane.
Wezza January 18th, 2006, 09:16 AM Oriolus, yeah similar view, except i think it may be a bit higher up & a bit closer than the highway.
Gertzy January 18th, 2006, 10:54 AM I like the view of the CBD from the Rail overpass on the Bruce Highway, you can get a reasonbly good view of the Holiday Inn driving down William Angliss Drive towards Murray Sporting Complex, not towards Annandale Central.
i've heard of Zurich the Insurance Company many times before actually, And I knew it was associated with that company.
Oriolus January 19th, 2006, 03:50 AM ^^Yeh It's a wonder I havn't heard of it in any other context before. According to the phone book Zurich Financial still have an office in the building. Where's the Zurich building in Brisbane mrlaxitive? I can't think of anything that looks like that.
Wezza January 19th, 2006, 09:01 AM Do you remember the add "When Ziggy went to Zurich Insurance Company"? lol
Gertzy January 19th, 2006, 10:15 AM Nope, don't even know of the ad at all :?
Wezza January 19th, 2006, 10:27 AM ^^
Lol, it was a long time ago. Probably at least 10-12 years, maybe even more.
mrlaxative January 19th, 2006, 01:25 PM I remember seeing the building when I was in Brisbane in 2001. I'm pretty sure it was on the outskirts of the CBD, possibly even Fortitude Valley or one of the other adjacent burbs next to the CBD. I'm pretty sure it was damn near identical, except it looked to be more 12-15 stories rather than than 7 stories. It even had the identical "Zurich" sign on the top of the building lit up up in blue. I'd say it could be leased to another company by now.
Oriolus January 24th, 2006, 02:40 AM ^^I must see this building :) I've asked about it in the Brisbane News thread - hopefully one of the Brisbane forumers can shed some light on it's identity.
In the meantime here's another shot featuring Zurich House, with a reef boat (well THE reef boat I think?)
http://img294.imageshack.us/img294/9239/1005764s3fx.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
hopper January 24th, 2006, 04:27 AM ^^ I drove past the Brisbane version of Zurich House yesterday. Its in Spring Hill (Leichhardt Street I think). Now all you need is someone with a digital camera.
Oriolus January 24th, 2006, 06:18 AM ^^Thanks hopper, I found it in the UBD - 201 Leichhardt St, Spring Hill (corner Leichhardt & Wharf). Here's a very poor photo I found - a better one'd be great. Doesn't seem to be much of a resemblance?? And your memory's certainly playing up on you with regards to height mrlaxitive. :)

Gertzy January 24th, 2006, 06:50 AM Thats Oxygen UC there across the road, by the way, does anyone know where the hall Chadwick centre is in Brisbane :?
mrlaxative January 24th, 2006, 11:34 PM Ok ok...it was night when I saw the building and I only saw it from the glass wall side so it was very deceiving. like Con the Fruiterer says "it dooooesn't matter!"
Oriolus January 27th, 2006, 12:46 AM Thats Oxygen UC there across the road, by the way, does anyone know where the hall Chadwick centre is in Brisbane :?Gertzy - Hall Chadwick Centre is now William Buck Centre. It's the same company they just changed their name. It's at 120 Edward St (southern corner of Edward and Charlotte). It's Emporis page is here (http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/bu/?id=131553) - it's still listed as Hall Chadwick though.
Gertzy January 27th, 2006, 11:42 AM Okay cool, Thanks for that.
Oriolus March 1st, 2006, 04:41 AM More on Zurich House - I found this photo in "Townsville: Guide to a Developing City" (1982 edition), which said Zurich House was completed in 1982. At the time it was called Melton Place.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v376/Oriolus/MeltonPlace.jpg
Wezza March 1st, 2006, 10:05 AM Not alot has changed in that frame since that pic was taken!! lol :)
Oriolus March 3rd, 2006, 07:19 AM Does anyone know what that large building in the distance on the left is? The photo is from 'Townsville 2000:The Port That Grew'.
View from Melton Terrace (undated)
http://img149.imageshack.us/img149/4625/meltonhillviews3uc.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Gertzy March 3rd, 2006, 08:12 AM Nope, wouldn't have a clue sorry.
Wezza March 3rd, 2006, 10:02 AM Can't say i do, but it looks like some sort of plant/factory. I'm stating the obvious here......lol ;)
GoTroppo March 4th, 2006, 03:18 AM Does anyone know what that large building in the distance on the left is? The photo is from 'Townsville 2000:The Port That Grew'. Easy one - that's the old Townsville Power Station - not sure what brought about its demise though. There were ruins there for many years - only cleaned up in the last 5-10 years.
Actually, I was more interested in the glimpse we can see of the Burns Philip warehouse (to the right of what is now Bully's) and it's lovely architecture. I can remember looking into the ruins as a kid and I was always saddened when it was demolished (as opposed to reusing the space internally).
Oriolus March 13th, 2006, 12:32 AM Thanks for that GoTroppo. I've been searching for more info on the South Townsville power station but haven't had much luck so far. Here's another photo I found, dating from 1956 (from Thuringowa Library)

Oriolus March 23rd, 2006, 07:01 AM Flinders St West, featuring T&G Building, Trustee House and Escape Nightclub:
http://img239.imageshack.us/img239/9055/1006921s9tn.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Wezza March 23rd, 2006, 09:13 AM Escape Nightclub is just in the wrong area of town. It would have been far more popular in Flinders St East. Townsville patrons are too lazy to walk that far from the other clubs. Maybe they can make a go of it when Central Living gets built. It was easily Townsville's best club, had the best sound system by far.
Oriolus March 24th, 2006, 06:24 AM ^^It may have failed as a night club but it least it left a legacy of a nice bright facade for the old Bulletin offices (from 1913-1968). Speaking of bright facades, anyone else seen these new townhouses in Patrick St, Aitkenvale. I have, and the image is seared onto my retinas :)
http://img161.imageshack.us/img161/512/greentownhouses24lk.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Wezza March 24th, 2006, 09:41 AM Can't say i've seen them. Where exactly is Patrick St? Somewhere in behind Stockies i take it?
