View Full Version : Richest sports clubs in South Africa
duklep July 20th, 2011, 10:37 AM What are the richest sports clubs in South Africa?
http://www.stadiumzone.weebly.com
has a list with more than 400 richest sports clubs in the world, which also
include Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates with a revenue around 20 million
euros. How about other clubs? Rugby and cricket clubs are probably
almost equally rich?
ToxicBunny July 20th, 2011, 11:51 AM Certain Rugby clubs will be richer than Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.....
hsark July 27th, 2011, 12:18 PM ya sharks , bulls , stormers
SA BOY July 27th, 2011, 03:50 PM lions/cats/golden lions/transvaal was the richest club in the world at one stage.
Depends how the value is calculated (debt needs to be considered), but Id say the sharks are the richest in the world (despite revenue in Rands) , due to size of stadium, best marketing rugby brand in the world, good sponcers and success over the past 3-4 years etc
agree bulls and province in top 3
Problem is pommie rugger clubs (take saracens for example) are owned by 1 very rich person so despite small grounds and low profile compared to soccer, they hide losses (as in purchase price) off the books, French are the worst at this .
Aussie teams barely break even as they have no domestic competiton and kiwi teams have small grounds

The title refers to sports teams, not just rugby. Thus I'm quite sure SA teams, rugby and football, would come nowhere close to teams like the Dallas Cowboys and Real Madrid.
SA BOY July 27th, 2011, 08:40 PM of course but someone asked whos the richest in SA and as our rugby teams would be richer than the soccer teams thats what we were speaking about
romanSA July 28th, 2011, 01:34 PM Not necessarily. In Jhb alone, Orlando Pirates just built their own stadium. Meanwhile, across town, the Lions are apparently in a dire financial state. Not sure how soccer's biggest SA club, Kaizer Chiefs, would stack up against rugby's biggest franchise (in terms of merchandising, anyway), the Sharks.

Pirates didn't build Orlando Stadium, I think you are confusing it with Chiefs' planned Amakhosi Stadium.
Pule July 28th, 2011, 02:46 PM None of the 2 teams built any stadium, it was Cheifs that wanted to build it in Krugersdorp.
romanSA July 28th, 2011, 03:07 PM Ah, thanks for clarifying. Which was the club stadium that was built (or underwent massive refurbishment) before the WC? Or did that not eventually occur?
hsark August 1st, 2011, 09:05 AM ya but pirates own half of holding company thats own the ellis park precinct i think ps: the lions are extremely broke there even considering selling ellis park which is kak stupid considering the amount gov. invested in it .....read the gumede

Orlando Stadium was rebuilt, and is Pirates' home, but is owned by the municipality.
Durbsboi August 1st, 2011, 11:35 AM Officially Chiefs are the richest sporting club in SA. I know its hard to believe they trump the rugby teams. Unofficially its Sundowns that are the richest with Patrice's endless pockets.

ya true about sundowns if gumede had brought the lions they would have been up there bt not in the same league as Pat his a billionaire
Durbsboi August 3rd, 2011, 03:52 PM The brother is playing in the Forbes Top40
SA BOY August 3rd, 2011, 09:09 PM richest sports clubs is not about who is owned by the richest guy but about revenue and debt. No way Chiefs are richer than the big 3 rugby unions, where is the proof?
dysan1 September 28th, 2011, 10:01 AM richest sports clubs is not about who is owned by the richest guy but about revenue and debt. No way Chiefs are richer than the big 3 rugby unions, where is the proof?
Completely agree. Until the clubs turnovers are known there is no way to really say
SA BOY September 28th, 2011, 04:32 PM its like saying Man city is richer than man united cos sheik mansour is richer than the galziers. fact is Man U has the highest turn over of any club so therefore its the richest
blurros2 October 27th, 2011, 11:35 AM Yeah, pretty big surprise the soccer clubs in South Africa are richer than the rugby clubs.
ToxicBunny October 27th, 2011, 12:51 PM Yeah, pretty big surprise the soccer clubs in South Africa are richer than the rugby clubs.
