Its quite depressing right...
seeing a fantastic canvas ready and in its perfect prime to have some good quality skyscrapers amongst its metropolis. But in your question i really dont know. Im sure we will but I get the impression it wont be for a while yet. I also think however, once that time comes, I think it will boom like recent years in london with talls. I can see something special happening once the ball gets rolling. But until then, all we can do is continue to wait...... and wait...... and wait..... and wait...... and yawn, and wait...... and wait.... and then HUZZAR!
Erebus555 July 22nd, 2011, 07:03 PM With the economy the way it is and then the length of time we're going to spend having to make up for it, it's going to be a very very long time before we see a true skyscraper, I reckon. I'd say, probably 10 to 15 years.
However, around about that time, Birmingham will have undergone an incredible shift in its demographics. There will be no ethnic majority in the city and Christianity will also become something of minority by 2030. The only other city to see something like that in the UK is Leicester but they don't have the economic base to utilise such demographics. When the council say that Birmingham is a global city, it is exactly right as the demographics roughly reflect what we are seeing in the world today. With more people from other countries living in the city - especially from the east - Birmingham will develop something of a reputation out there which I can definitely see producing major benefits. Already we're seeing Chinese investment in manufacturing here. I think it's perfectly acceptable and feasible to think that in 10-15 years time, eastern investment from the likes of China, India, the Middle East and maybe a place like Brazil will spread to other sectors of the industry within Birmingham as it becomes something of a home from home for people from that country.
I really do think that Birmingham is the best placed city in the long run, now, outside of London. But I do start to worry that the Big City Plan isn't taking all this into consideration and could become very inadequate many many years down the line...
Walsh July 22nd, 2011, 07:12 PM p.s that pylon in the middle of the picture i posted is roughly and good template of how the shard in london would look along the skyline! It in my eyes fits well!
Elizabeth Kinoke July 23rd, 2011, 12:15 AM That's still a mo fo good skyline though... birthplace of celluloid, so many advances in engineering it's painful, heavy metal and the mellotron.

Elizabeth Kinoke July 23rd, 2011, 01:20 AM maybe Birmingham looks better without skyscrapers? Shit that's a big statement..
love the look of moodyness from that low rise steamy, industrial naivity.

I'm sure some of this info is incorrect like regal tower is 201m and HCT is 122m and the new street towers have been cancelled with john lewis to take its place and from the pictures snow hill 3 is cancelled right?
adamdalziel July 23rd, 2011, 11:07 AM I thought it was more like this but I'd love to be proved wrong:
1. Regal Tower, maybe but not hopeful
2. Arena Central Tower, replaced by v-building
3. 103 Colmore Row, maybe
4. The V Building, maybe a shorter replacement
5. Snow Hill Residential, will be 'reconfigured', probably reduced in height
6. Broad Street Tower, doubt it
7. 10 Holloway Circus, complete
8. Rough Diamond Resi, don't think so
9. Rough Diamond Hotel, as above
10. Rough Diamond Office, as above
11. New Street Station 2 , replaced by john lewis
12. New Street Station 1, as above
13. No. 1 Snow Hill Plaza, don't know
14. Martineau Galleries, thought was cancelled but was some talk of it recently
15. Beorma Quarter, maybe
16. Masshouse Block A, maybe
17. CALA , Hill Street, don't know
Elizabeth Kinoke July 23rd, 2011, 12:04 PM There are just a few towers which I think the council should ensure get built as close to the original designs as possible, V-Tower, Regal, Boerma, Colmore (Nat West), Snow Hill and VTP200. I'd die a happy sole then.
fruit&nut July 23rd, 2011, 02:03 PM Simple answer.
No.
Bachy Soletanche July 23rd, 2011, 02:11 PM Yes. If we mean over 150m
'When's' more the question.
sefton66 July 23rd, 2011, 02:43 PM Id rather see V building built the most followed by beorma then regal
Personally I think the next 100m+ we will be getting is the fire station development then beorma to be honest, I think the rest will remain quiet for some time
Erebus555 July 23rd, 2011, 05:40 PM This is the deal with the towers so far
1. Regal Tower, approved and still on the cards
2. Arena Central Tower, cancelled
3. 103 Colmore Row, approved and still on the cards
4. The V Building, replacement plans being investigated
5. Snow Hill Residential, being reconsidered
6. Broad Street Tower, likely cancelled
7. 10 Holloway Circus, complete
8. Rough Diamond Resi, vision
9. Rough Diamond Hotel, vision
10. Rough Diamond Office, vision
11. New Street Station 2 , replaced by john lewis
12. New Street Station 1, as above
13. No. 1 Snow Hill Plaza, cancelled
14. Martineau Galleries, outline approved - new potential details at the end of the year
15. Beorma Quarter, approved and still on the cards
16. Masshouse Block A, outline approved and still on the cards
17. CALA , Hill Street, replaced by HCT
sefton66 July 23rd, 2011, 08:53 PM What was the cala proposal? Any pictures?
Erebus555 July 23rd, 2011, 09:22 PM I've never seen pictures of the proposal but I remember reading something like it was two cylindrical towers. I always imagined it to be like Marina City.
joshwebb July 24th, 2011, 04:46 PM Well the bt tower is 152m so yes
Erebus555 July 24th, 2011, 05:42 PM Well the bt tower is 152m so yes
But the BT Tower is as much as a skyscraper as your average telephone mast. The only difference is that its a mast completely wrapped in concrete so that it doesn't get blown to smithereens in a Cold War nuclear explosion!
joshwebb July 24th, 2011, 05:45 PM But it has 10 floors I think so its a building yes?
Erebus555 July 24th, 2011, 05:53 PM But it has 10 floors I think so its a building yes?
It has floors but not in the habitable sense. They're mostly equipment and service floors.
It's a bit pathetic to try and claim the BT Tower is a skyscraper in front of other true skyscrapers around the world. Especially as the BT Tower is only over 150m because of the crane on top...
blueboy July 24th, 2011, 05:55 PM We will get a true scraper in the future, but by then so will most cities in the uk.
rafter1 July 24th, 2011, 10:41 PM The BT Tower is 35 stories high, there is a lift lobby on each floor and each
floor has a particular use. A colleague of mine was present at the
construction of the tower, and worked there for the first five years of it's
existance. He said that the canteen was on the eighth floor. He has
photographs of the construction which I am trying to borrow, and if I can
work out how to post them, I will do so.

That makes your colleague a pretty old geezer .... is he still working?!?
Erebus555 July 24th, 2011, 11:05 PM Love to see internal shots of the BT tower.
Ecological July 25th, 2011, 11:24 AM WOOOOOOAHHHHH!!!
New Street Station towers HAVEN'T been cancelled. They just aren't being involved with the current scheme.
They are dormant until market conditions pick up.
rafter1 July 25th, 2011, 12:31 PM He is an old geezer, approaching retirement. He was an apprentice with BT
at the time of the construction.

Oh dear god yes.
You have to get these Rafter1

John Lewis is taking up the space where these would have been built, so in effect they have been cancelled, unless they are going to be moved to somewhere else around the station, but where is the space for that?

That's what I was thinking n I could only think of on top of the station or is that just stupid?
Erebus555 July 26th, 2011, 03:12 AM ^^Not really possible as they need to be able support the tower, and they can't do that on the building. The John Lewis site was the only really possible site because they can dig piles for the foundations there. I did hold out hope that they could create some provision for a tower to be built on top of John Lewis in the future but I can't see that being the case.
Walsh July 26th, 2011, 11:42 AM That's what I was thinking n I could only think of on top of the station or is that just stupid?
:ohno:
BhamJim July 26th, 2011, 12:56 PM The old albany, city centre tower or most ideally the horrible brown monstrosity on John Bright Street opposite what will be the John Lewis store would get my vote for the location of a new tower adjacent to New St Station.

Gotta agree with you Erebus, Birmingham is a cultural melting pot and is a model of multiculturalism which we should all be proud of and build on. I can see future investment leading to some high profile projects including some tall towers, but we could be waiting a while to see a skyline reflecting what a leading multicultural city we live in and strive for.
joshwebb July 27th, 2011, 02:13 AM I think a train station of that size needs a good tower or 2 but it seems that there is next to nothing hope for it :(
Bureau des etrangers July 27th, 2011, 05:46 PM I think a train station of that size needs a good tower or 2 but it seems that there is next to nothing hope for it :(
Why?? why does the station need towers?? I wish that new street could be a stand alone building, without the car park on top, without the office block on top and without John lewis bolted on!!
I think new street will be a striking building, but will be somewhat overshadowed by its add-ons
BhamJim July 27th, 2011, 06:10 PM I agree totally. The nicest stations are stand alone with striking roofs and frontages, New Street will (even after such a huge investment) still not have either to compare with the finest.
Without wanting to go too off topic, Birmingham should instead focus on Snow Hill to make a statement station. Get rid of the multi storey car park that currently stifles it and create a huge glass cantilever roof incorporating the entire station and adjoining metro terminal: open to the elements on the Snow Hill Phase 2 site, and with a new grand frontage on Colmore Row.
joshwebb July 27th, 2011, 08:16 PM Because there's so many people that use this station so these add ons are convenient
sefton66 July 27th, 2011, 08:40 PM I see what Josh means, A lot of people from other parts of the UK that I know have always said they like the fact you get off your train and everything is right there
Erebus555 July 27th, 2011, 09:26 PM Certain shops and services certainly are convenient, but a tower really doesn't serve the passenger unless it is a hotel. And even then, the hotel isn't guaranteed any more business than a hotel 200m up Corporation Street.
