Just thought of starting a thread about bridges found in Africa! As everyone knows bridges are infrastructural pride icons of respective countries and usually demonstrate the advancements of economies of respective countries! To start with here is Kigamboni bridge (680m) to connect Dar es salaam city center and the Kigamboni peninsula that is to start construction this year and is to be funded to the tune of US$ 130 mio. by both the NSSF (60%) and the GOT (40%) (http://www.businesstimes.co.tz/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1233:nssf-denies-dropping-kigamboni-bridge-project&catid=1:latest-news&Itemid=57)

It is gonna start this year Magufuli has assured us! I trust him..!

No space on the land mind you that is to be a CBD and land is in high demand and very valuable at that location (all major hotels, offices want those plots around the peninsula banks check Kigamboni city master plan)! Guys designers have sat down and came up with that design with all economical aspects under consideration! So there is no bullshit there!

this is the shortest bridge in khartoum with a lenght of 410 meters, also prabably the shortest since separation the shortest was juba bridge in south sudan capital of 250 meters.

Alhalfaia bridge

this bridge opened in 2011 , until now it is the longest and widest bridge in Sudan. it has 3 lanes on both sides and its length is 910 meters , if work finishes on time at Dabaseen bridge then halfaia bridge won't hold the title of longest bridge in sudan any longer.

Al Dabaseen bridge

This bridge will be longer than Halfaia bridge and it is located on the white nile coming from Uganda, This will be the 3rd bridge linking Omdurman to Khartoum. It is also part of The sudan new international airport, it will be the main way from the new airport to Khartoum city because the airport is located in Omdurman. Because the white nile is extremely wide at this point, the length of the bridge will be 1670 meters but unfortunately it will only have 2 lanes on both sides like most bridges in sudan.
construction will finish march next year.

New Jinja Bridge

http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r579/abdel37/f58bde99.jpg

It is expected to serve as a major trade route connecting Uganda to the Kenyan port of Mombasa, Rwanda, Burundi, the DR Congo as well as Central Africa. It is going to be 80% financed by the Japanese government and it will be slowly repaid by uganda in 10 years time. This bridge will be the longest bridge in Uganda, it has a total length of 525 meters , construction will start on August this year and will end in 2016.

Unity bridge

http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r579/abdel37/d46b974c.jpg

The Unity Bridge (sometimes called "Unity Bridge 1") across Ruvuma River at Negomano, Mozambique, between Tanzania and Mozambique was proposed as early as 1975, shortly after Mozambique's independence. It was the idea of the two country's former Presidents, Mwalimu Nyerere and Samora Machel. Several design studies and limited construction work were completed in the early 1980s, but the Unity Bridge was not finished due to lack of funds.
In 2002 the two national governments made a formal agreement to build a new bridge across the river. The first foundation stones were laid both on Tanzanian and Mozambique sides on October 10, 2005. Construction was initially planned to be finished in 2008.

The bridge is 720m long with 1 lane on each side, one of the longest bridges in the region.

Ethiopia's First Extradosed Bridge

http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r579/abdel37/660cf7f7.jpg

The new bridge will be constructed upstream from the current Abbay Bridge (built in 1948). Ethiopia's first extradosed prestressed concrete cable-stayed bridge will have a center span of 145 meters (476 feet) and total length of 303 meters (995 feet). The bridge, which will accommodate heavy vehicles with axle loads of 12 tons and total weight of 60 tons, is attracting the attention of the Ethiopian Association of Civil Engineers and the local construction industry.

Construction is scheduled for completion in December 2008. The rehabilitated road and new bridge are expected to ensure access to Ethiopia's largest grain and livestock belt and activate the distribution of agricultural produce.

NO IT WAS BUILT IN late 70' and commissioned in 1980 I remember going there, when I was young, to watch SUMITOMO doing construction...

With the new DONGO KUNDU road in the offing, we may see 4 more bridges in Mombasa and possibly if the government approves a proposal, a sixth bridge will be put up to supplement Nyali bridge
