I like the architectural concept and name.
I'm not sure about the location, but it does have the look of a terminal at least lol

I is actually located behind the terminal, next to Botevgrad blvd and when the Northern city speedway will be build it will have a good connection to the city's infrastructure. Presumably the metro will be extended to the stadium.

Unnecessarily frivolous. But if it does take off then its a very unique design. Good luck to them

But is that the design that's been announced as the new national stadium for 40k near the airport some few months ago? In other words - how official is it and what's the status - have they got any permits, etc.?

Well a few months ago there were rumors that the government wanted to build a national stadium and the area next to the airport was one of the potential places where they wanted to build it.

This proposal was made by a group of Spanish investors and it will work under a public-private partnership. The municipality will provide land, while the investors will build the stadium together with a mall/hotel/offices.

Nothing is finalized as of yet and if this moves through, most probably there might be some changes in the stadium's parameters (higher capacity).

There is also another project that was announced by the Sports minister. He has been dealing with the group that manages the Amsterdam Arena and it seems that they would also be interested in forming a public-private partnership to build a national stadium.

For now the "Arena of the Roses" seem to be in a more advanced stage but at the same time, things change quite a lot in Bulgaria, so I wouldn't bet my money that this project will be realized.

Any info about the price tag of this beauty?
Although it's a beauty, it's a little too pompous for me.

And last but not least, what are the chances for the stadium to be built?

For the price, I wouldn't be able to tell you. The investors presented three projects this one (40 000) and two other stadiums (15 000 & 25 000) and said that the total invesment in those three stadiums would be around EUR 450M.

This is not the final version of the stadium this is for sure. The government has shown support and said that they will create a public-private partnership in order for the project to go through. The investor said that if needed the capacites will increase. But nothing is sure in BG, sometimes there is a lot of talk but not enough walk. We will see...

excuse me guys! i like this project very esthetic standards :)

But yesterday i saw a report on french tv that pointed all corruption aspects of bulgaria.

My question is : is there a scandal around this project too?

if no it is very cool and all best wishes for bulgaria and projects.

The report showed how beautiful and cheap was the tourism on coast.

ok it's true that the report was caricatural dealing with an ex body buider that reconversion is a succes with the mafia's link+ french youngs going in holidays on bulgarian coast to have good time in night bar and prostitutes.

But one thing is not to deny-> a lot of girls have to give their body to porn & erotic industry to earn money.

True, but this has not much to do with your initial question of whether there is corruption regarding this project. There is human trafficking in Bulgaria just like there is in Asia, Africa and Latin America, but I doubt that this will affect the outcome of the project.

Except for some important matches such as the biggest derby (Levski vs CSKA), the final of the Bulgarian Cup and some special games. Overall it will mainly be for the Nationals.

Since we are talking of Sofia, can a bulgarian explain me why the city if growing so quickly ?

I mean you can see such growth in no other EU capital ! Is it linked to international and/or national investments mostly done in Sofia (and so more jobs) and putting other bulgarian cities aside, or something else ?

 If you call that "quickly growing", than you should visit Bucharest... 1 construction site every 50 meters.
(new national stadium, new sports hall, new roads, new bridges, new boulevards, new residential/office buildings, new airport terminal, new underground parkings, new metro stations, new public buildings, new fun parks, renovated historical center, new national theatre, new national library, new hospitals, new parks, new business districts, etc.etc.etc....)

The project looks very nice. It reminds of a rose, which is one of Bulgarias symbols and at the same time of the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Sofia. However, I am not very optimistic about the realisation and I doubt the construction will begin soon.

I talked of demography. And it's indeed it's because urbanization, or better say reurbanisation, but also afflux of bulgarians from poorer regions. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sofia#Demographics)

In the first week of January 2012 Hristo Stoichkov will turn the first sod for the construction of the new national stadium. He gave this promise to popular TV journalist Martin Karbovski in NOVA TV live. The stadium planned to hold 40ÿ000 is designed to be ready within two years and a half. ?We have made the almost final talks with the Ministers of Finance and Sports ? Djankov and Svilen Neykov,? Stoichkov explained. He himself has attracted Spanish investors for the construction of three stadiums in Plovdiv and Sofia. Last details need to be specified with Sofia?s Chief Architect, Petar Dikov on the place for the national stadium. It is almost sure it would be built near the airport on a terrain of 250ÿ000 sq.m. Its design will resemble the domes of St Alexander Nevski Cathedral. Seen from the air it would look like a blossoming rose. It is expected to cost at least 150 million levs (1euro=1.95 levs).

Bulgaria's New National Stadium to Be Built near Sofia Airport

Bulgaria's new national stadium is going to be built in the Sofia suburb of Vrazhdebna, the Minister of Youth and Sports, Svilen Neykov, has announced.

The investor in the project is a Spanish company, invited to Bulgaria by legendary striker Hristo Stoichkov, who in mid-October was appointed consul in Barcelona.

Neykov says the project has already been launched and Chief Architect of Sofia, Petar Dikov, is already working on the details. The location has been designated as Vrazhdebna while the transfer of the land plot under the Sports Ministry is forthcoming.

Recently, Stoichkov announced that the construction can begin in January. At the end of July, he presented several large-scale projects for new sports facilities, to be funded by the WMA company.

At the time, the Spanish business pointed out each new stadium is to cost about EUR 150 M and could be finished in five years after the issuing of construction permits.

The new national stadium will be called "Arena of the Rose" and will be constructed near the International Airport where Vrazhdebna is located. It will have 40 000 seats and seen from above it will look like a rose. There will be three additional fields, a hotel and stores in the vicinity of the facility.

I like the design very much.
The plot should be transfered soon from the defence ministry to the ministry of sport. It is a strategic location at the crossing of Hemus motorway and Sofia ring road.At the back of the airport.
The future MD 3 will have station there.
Our PM Boiko Borisov said that no taxpayers money will be spend we'll see about that.
The state will parrticipate at least with the land plot.
The area status will be changed and written in the city plan. They will give a build permit.
However there are many very important thing that are not clear for example :
who exactly will provide the money for the construction
who will be responsible for the upkeep / maintenance

This is the arena hall that is still being built in Ljubljana. I find some similarities, though our stadium looks prettier i think. However i am not sure if this is the best project ever. The rose allusion is not bad, but there is something that puzzles me and with time i get more and more sceptic if it really looks good.
I am afraid that this shiny stadium from the renders, will finally turn into something not so bright and amazing .... /i remember the Arena Armeec renders and now when we see the result /form the outside, only/ we feel fooled cause the one time render beauty is actually not that beauty any more /. And besides do we really need to spend some 150 million for a new rose stadium when 20 million we do enough to transform Plovdiv Stadium into a new and fully operational sport facility worth and even outmatch the Vasil Levski`s capacity and importance. A new national stadium in Plovdiv? Why not ....

What is this discussion about location? As it turns out the stadium will not be near the airport, but opposite the Armeets Arena in central Sofia - 6km from the airport and app. 4km from the current Vassil Levski stadium. As of March it is scheduled to be completed by 2015, but knowing how things happen in Bulgaria, I would rather think of 2016-2017 as a completion date.
