At 4.8 kilometers long, it is the longest bridge in South Asia and the largest project in the history of Bangladesh, constructed over the Jamuna, the fourth largest river in the world. Built over almost four years, it cost $900 million and carries four lanes of traffic, a railway track, power lines, gas pipelines and fiber-optic telecommunications cables. The Bangladesh Bank, ADB, and Japan's OECF each contributed $200 million, with the government of Bangladesh contributing the remainder.
Already, an average of more than 3,000 vehicles is crossing the bridge daily, and toll collection has provided a welcome boost to government revenue. Spurring on the development of export processing zones and private tourism complexes on both sides, the bridge is creating jobs, promoting investment, and increasing trade. It has become a tourist spot since it's opening. There has been a resort, few hotels, and amusement park already created. Thousands of people flock to Jamuna Bridge resort everyday. A true success story for Bangladesh and it's growth.
I hope you guys enjoy the pics as much as I do.

It is very nice and it is a grand scale project aswell. If i may just spoil the party though, those electricity cables make the whole thing look ugly though, If only they hadnt put that there it would have been perfect. I do apologise for saying that, because as i said this is an amazing thing, something bangladesh should be extremely proud of :)

Its a bridge built on a grand scale no doubt. Its of high quality construction standard. On the contrary, I like those electric cables running along the bridge. Kind of gives it a suspension bridge field to it. Its quiet unique.

I like the bridge, i just don't like the power lines running with the bridge,, i think it wud be wise to run the powerlines under water.
And the Govt can always add-on the suspension feeling to the bridge.

roads and highway infastructure in Bangladesh is improving at a fast rate. Several new major bridges have opened up recently (Paksey Bridge, 2nd Buriganga bridge, etc). I am still looking for pictures. Here's a few images of some historic bridges in Bangladesh. The first one is just too pretty to leave out.

Bangladesh may join Trans-Asian Railway network
Shakhawat Hossain
8/8/2006
Bangladesh is likely to join the Trans-Asian Railway (TAR) network by signing an inter-governmental agreement to this effect in the South Korean city of Busan in November next.
The government has taken an initiative for signing the multinational pact under the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) after finding the TAR route layout suitable for the country.
The project was initiated more than five decades ago to promote trade and tourism among 32 Asian and European countries by linking about 81,000 rail-routes.
Though Dhaka has made substantial progress in signing the Trans-Asian Railway accord, it has so far expressed unwillingness to sign the Asian Highway accord under the same organistion.
"The country has strong reservation on the proposed layout of the Asian highway. But the layout of the Asian Railway is favourable for the country," said a high official of the communications ministry.
The ministry sought opinion of the Bangladesh Railway (BR) on the UNESCAP-proposed routes and sub-routes inside the country and the BR's opinion has been positive.
According to the route layout proposed by the UNESCAP, the TAR Route-I from Gede in West Bengal of India runs through Darshana, Jamuna bridge, Tongi, Akhaura, Chittagong, Dohazari and Ghundum in Bangladesh.
The route, that will treat the Tongi-Dhaka and Akhaura-Khlaura-Shabajpur to Mahisasan in India as sub-routes, will run to the border station in Myanmar.
The TAR Route-II connects India and Bangladesh through Singabad in West Bengal and Rohanpur of Nawabganj in Bangladesh. The route runs through Rajshahi and Akhaura and has access to other routes and sub-routes.
Under the TAR Route-III, Bangladesh will be connected with Radhikapur in West Begal on the Indian side through Birol. Like the TAR Route-II, it will also have access to other routes and sub-routes inside Bangladesh.
The communications ministry now will seek approval of the cabinet body before sending a representative in this regard to Busan in November, added the officials.
Bangladesh has been placed in a group under the TAR that includes India, Iran, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Turkey sharing about 22,600 kilometres of railroad. A total of 2,734 km railroad has been proposed to be included in the project.
The TAR agreement signing ceremony is scheduled for November 6-11. The decision was taken in the UNESCAP's 62nd session held in last April in the Thai capital Bangkok.
Increasing international trade, surging volume of containerised freight forwarding through the ports of the Asia-Pacific region and the recognition of importance of greater regional integration are facilitating implementation of the TAR, which also offers an opportunity to upgrade the existing infrastructure or construct new ones.
With this in mind, the member countries opted to define a framework, within which they can discuss and plan the future expansion, upgradation and operation of the TAR network.
In 2005, the inter-governmental agreement on the TAR was adopted.

Mohiuddin offers dialogue with govt
Staff Correspondent . Chittagong
The construction work of the Third Karnaphuli Bridge, the bone of fierce contention between the Chittagong mayor-led Nagorik Committee and the government, began on schedule Tuesday morning, but without any ceremony.
The communications minister, Nazmul Huda, however, visited the construction site at noon before joining a ruling coalition rally in the downtown Laldighi Maidan in the afternoon to counter the movement spearheaded by the mayor against the pillar-based bridge.
In the other camp, the mayor, ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury, at a press conference held in the Chittagong City Corporation auditorium in the morning talked in a changed, conciliatory manner, saying he was ready to sit with the government for a dialogue on the issue, if he was officially invited.
'If the government can convince us of the inconveniences of a suspension bridge, we will withdraw our demand,' he announced.
He, however, also said the Nagorik Committee would go to the higher court seeking injunction to stop construction of the pier-based bridge to save the Chittagong Port from ruin.
But, speaking as the chief guest at the 4-party alliance rally, Nazmul Huda alleged, 'The Chittagong mayor is opposing the construction of the bridge merely for political reasons and ignoring the demand of the people of this region.'
He claimed the bridge was planned and being constructed in a sophisticated way, which would cause no harm to the port.
The minister for fisheries and livestock, Abdullah Al Noman, state minister for communications, Salahuddin Ahmed, and state minister for environment and forest, Jafrul Islam Chowdhury, were the special guests of the meeting chaired by whip Sayed Wahidul Alam.
The rally was organised expressly to protest at the alleged conspiracy against the bridge construction.
The project to construct the 919.48-mitre-long and 12.4-mitre-wide Third Karnaphuli Bridge was undertaken in 2001. Of the Tk 590-crore project fund, the Kuwait Fund is providing Tk 372 crore and the government the rest.
The planning, financing and other procedures for constructing the bridge took over four years and it would take four more years if the government now goes for a different type of bridge, pointed out Abdullah Al Noman. ‘So,’ he argued, ‘those who are demanding a suspension bridge instead of the planned one, really don’t want any bridge at all.’
He lambasted Mohiuddin for opposing the bridge construction on what he termed the pretext of saving the port and alleged, ‘This man always opposes projects undertaken for development of the port city.’
Ruling coalition lawmakers Sarwar Jamal Nizam, Shahajahan Chowdhury and Nur-e-Ara
Shafa, and a large number of leaders of the BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami, Islami Oikya Jote and Bangladesh Jatiya Party also addressed the rally.

Myanmar team due in Sept to finalise road-link agreement
Wednesday August 16 2006 11:24:30 AM BDT
Zahedul Islam
A four-member delegation of the Myanmar government, led by a deputy minister, is likely to arrive in the first week of September to finalise the proposed Bangladesh-Myanmar road-link agreement.
The foreign affairs ministry of Myanmar, in a letter to the Bangladesh government in July, said that Yangon would send a four-member team led by its deputy minister for construction, Brigadier General Myint Thein, for a visit from September 1 to 4 to finalise the 153-kilometre road-link agreement.
According to the agreement, Bangladesh and Myanmar will be responsible for planning, construction and maintenance of the road. Both countries will make land available, free of charge, for the proposed road as well as provide camping facilities for construction personnel, equipment and supplies.
The Bangladesh government regards the sending of the ‘high-level’ team as a positive gesture from Yangon as well as a major breakthrough of Dhaka’s continued diplomatic effort to persuade Myanmar to sign the agreement as a bid to make its ‘look East policy’ a success.
‘We hope this team will finalise the agreement to pave the way for signing the agreement by October, before the end of the present government’s tenure,’ said a top official of the communications ministry which will implement the project.
The road-link is a major component of the ‘look East policy’ of the BNP-led four-party alliance launched in 2002 with a view to strengthening ties with countries in Southeast Asia, and particularly with China.
Earlier, Bangladesh had invited Myanmar several times to finalise the agreement to enable both countries to start the construction of the first phase of the 153-kilometre road-link project.
But Yangon was unwilling
and non-cooperative since September 2005, citing its inability to finance the Myanmar portion of the road and saying that the project is not on its priority list.
However, in May, during a visit, foreign secretary Hemayetuddin reportedly persuaded the Myanmar government to sign the agreement.
The proposed road will stretch from Taungbro to Kyauktaw in Myanmar via Ramu-Gundom to Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh, and will be constructed in two phases at an estimated cost of Tk 933.46 crore.
The Bangladesh government, according to the plan, will construct a 43-km stretch of the road in the first phase, of which 20 km will be in Bangladesh and 23 km in Myanmar, at a cost of Tk 163.49 crore.
The prime minister, Khaleda Zia, proposed to build the highway during her visit to Myanmar in 2003. The head of the Myanmar government visited Bangladesh the following year and laid the foundation of the road in Teknaf.
The communications ministry will hold an inter-ministerial meeting on August 21 to nominate a team leader from Bangladesh to finalise the agreement.
The meeting will also decide whether it is necessary to take prior approval from the cabinet to sign the agreement.

3rd Buriganga Bridge
Construction going fast
The government has in principle decided to construct an approach road from the Rayerbazar embankment to Satmasjid Road to facilitate movement of vehicles from the city to the 3rd Buriganga Bridge at Basila, official sources said.
The officials said they will start a field survey soon for the road. Based on that survey report, the government will ascertain how much land is needed for the road and acquire the land accordingly.
"The approach road will not be more than 1.5 km long from the Rayerbazar embankment to BRTC bus terminal on Satmasjid Road, but this will make the bridge efficient, enabling the vehicles to run to and from the bridge easily," said an official of Roads and Highways Department (RHD).
http://www.thedailystar.net/2007/01/15/2007-01-15__scity01.jpg
Construction of the third Buriganga bridge in Basilka continues day and night.
The officials said they are hopeful of getting funds for the approach road from the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development, the funding authority of the bridge.
Meanwhile, piling work for the bridge is now going in the river. The officials are hopeful that there would be significant progress in the basement construction of the bridge within next three months.
The 705-metre long and 10-metre wide bridge will be constructed at Basila in Mohammadpur at a cost of Tk 48 crore. This will be the third bridge on the river Buriganga that will connect the capital with its outskirts.
"The progress of the bridge project is more than satisfactory. We are hopeful to complete it before December 2009, the fixed time for the project," said Muzammel Haque, project director (PD), 3rd Buriganga Bridge.
The bridge on the south-western side of the capital would extend the city. It will also facilitate the development of the west bank of Buriganga as an industrial zone.
In addition to connecting a vast area in Keraniganj and parts of Savar area, the third Buriganga Bridge would facilitate creating two more routes as alternatives to Mawa road in the west and Savar road in the east.

Govt likely to approve Integrated Multimodal Transport Policy soon
The Integrated Multimodal Transport Policy (IMTP), drafted in 2005 with the aim to introduce a coordinated transportation system in the country for reducing cost, is likely to be approved by the cabinet division soon.
The government, as part of its commitment to improving and strengthening the communication facilities including that of waterways, will move soon to approve the policy, Sheikh Enayetullah, secretary of the ministry of commerce, told the FE Tuesday after inaugurating a workshop.
The workshop on 'Revival of Inland Water Transport: Options and Strategies' was organised jointly by the Bangladesh Inland Water and Transport Authority (BIWTA) and the World Bank (WB) at a hotel in the city Tuesday.
Speaking as the chief guest at the workshop, the shipping secretary said the discussions in workshop will be helpful to formulate a national shipping policy.
The IMTP was earlier sent back twice for revision by the cabinet division to the ministry.
However, improvement in the water transportation will help the government in its poverty reduction initiatives as rivers cover maximum area of the country, Enayetullah said, adding the inland water trans port is yet to get proper attention from the government.
Mentioning the WB-funded three projects, Enayetullah underscored the need for further financing by the multilateral donor to bring improvement in the sector.
Speaking as the special guest, Xian Zhu, country director of the WB in Dhaka, said water transportation offers a cheap, efficient and environment-friendly means for movement of passengers and cargoes, especially the bulk for ones and petroleum as lower fuel consumption will reduce emission of carbon dioxide.
Water transports can reach poor rural communities, giving them access to services and markets, thereby helping the government efforts to reduce poverty, he said.

‘Highway linking Bangladesh, Myanmar, China under plan’
President Iajuddin Ahmed yesterday said a highway linking Bangladesh, Myanmar and China is being constructed for enhancing cooperation among the eastern countries.
He said, "Bangladesh is pursuing an active policy of promotion and maintenance of friendly relations and cooperation with neighbouring countries in South, Southeast and Far East Asia for enhancing trade, commerce and peace in the region."
The President made the comments when outgoing Ambassador of the Republic of Korea (ROK) Seung-Ung Park paid a farewell call on him at Bangabhaban.
He told the envoy that the next parliamentary election in Bangladesh would be held "in a free, fair, credible and impartial manner".
Referring to heavy trade imbalance between Bangladesh and Korea, Dr Iajuddin requested the Korean government to take appropriate measures to narrow the gap by removing tariff and non-tariff barriers on Bangladeshi exportable goods to the ROK market.
He hoped that the ROK would continue to provide financial and technical assistance for development of Bangladesh, especially in ICT sector, as one of the important development partners of Bangladesh.
He also expected that Bangladesh would be included into the list of workforce sending countries under employment-permit system by the Korean government. He thanked Korea for making a large amount of direct investment in Bangladesh.
Dr Iajuddin informed the envoy that Bangladesh has achieved some of the goals of millennium development, including in education, healthcare service, micro-credit, women empowerment, supply of arsenic free pure water and sanitation.
Ambassador Seung-Ung said that the bilateral relations between Bangladesh and Korea are excellent and the ties would be further strengthened in future.

Govt initiative involving Tk 60b to construct Dhaka-Chittagong Express way
An initiative to construct Dhaka-Chittagong Express way beside the existing Dhaka-Chittagong highway involving Tk 60 billion has been undertaken by the government.
Survey report of the consulting organisation to this effect, has already been submitted to the concerned authority, sources said.
According to the concerned sources, the number of vehicles has increased in the country. Besides being the premier port of the country, the number of vehicles plying between Chittagong and Dhaka is also on the increase gradually. Around 40 thousand vehicles of various types move through this highway.
The existing Dhaka-Chittagong highway would be linked with the Trans Asian Highway.
Under the circumstances, necessary initiatives were undertaken by the government to construct a 4-lane Express way beside the existing Dhaka-Chittagong Highway.
Movement of the vehicles on the proposed Dhaka-Chittagong Express way would be restricted. The vehicles would be allowed to move through payment of tolls.
It would be constructed under such a design where the vehicles could run at a speed of one hundred kilometre per hour.
According to the sources, SNC Lavalin International of Canada in collaboration with SAJ Consulting Engineering Private Ltd of India have jointly drafted the survey report while Engineering and Planning Consultants Ltd and Khalid and Partners Ltd of Bangladesh extended their assistance in preparing the report.
It was mentioned in the report to construct the proposed Express way either on Public-Private Partnership (PPP) or Build Operate and Transfer (BOT) basis for a 30 to 35 year term.
With the implementation of such a gigantic project in the communication sector, duration of travel time between Dhaka and Chittagong would be reduced below 3 hours and existing pressure on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway would be lessened, to a great extent.

4-lanning of Dhaka-Chittagong National Highway
The activities of 4-lanning of Dhaka-Chittagong Highway Project have been started. There are 10 packages for road works contract and 2 for bridge works. Total length of the Dhaka-Chittagong National highway to be made 4-lane under this project is 194 km. One of the most interesting features of this project is that three Flyovers will be constructed at three Rail Crossing points along the Highway.
The project is funded by GoB under the Japan Debt Cancellation Fund (JDCF). The completion of the project is in the year of 2010. The project cost is BDT 1699.40 crore.
The main objective of this project is to reduce constraints and increase efficiency of road transport through upgrading of Dhaka-Chittagong Highway (from Daudkandi to Chittagong) from 2-lane to 4-lane. It will optimize the utilization of Chittagong Port. The improvement of this strategic corridor is envisaged to provide substantial economic and social benefits to south-eastern region in particular through generation of employment, creation of improved facilities to trade and commence, promotion of social integration and development of tourism and thus assisting in the overall economic development of Bangladesh.

Work on third Karnaphuli Bridge goes on in full swing
The construction of the third bridge across the River Karnaphuli is going on in full swing.
Sources in the Roads and Highways Department said piling of three pillars out of 10 in keeping with the design of the 950-metre long and 24-metre wide bridge has already been completed.
They also set up a temporary bridge and four platforms— imperatives for initiating construction of the main structure by this week.
The project director, Belal Mokhtadir, told New Age that 35 Chinese engineers along with four hundred workers were carrying out the bridge construction day and night.
‘Construction of the bridge will be completed at least six months earlier than the stipulated timeframe, if the works keep going under the current momentum,’ he added.
The project to construct the Third Karnaphulli Bridge, involving Tk 598 crore, was taken in 2001 and the immediate-past prime minister, Khaleda Zia, laid the foundation stone of the bridge on April 19, 2004.
The Major Bridge Company of China started construction of the bridge on August 8 in 2006 with stipulated timeframe to accomplish the 590-crore-taka project by thirty-six months.
According to the sources in the RHD Kuwait Fund was giving Tk 370 crore as soft loan while the government of Bangladesh was providing the rest amount for the implementation of the project.
The movement of heavy vehicles on two other bridges on the river, Kalurghat and Shah Amanat, has remained suspended due to their dilapidated conditions.

Work on Padma Bridge begins in new fiscal year
Construction of the gigantic Padma bridge will start in the 2008-09 fiscal year, beginning next month, involving an estimated cost of Tk 85.88 billion. Of the total amount, donors and international development agencies will provide Tk 55.83 billion under Project Loan Assistance while government will spend Tk 30.05 billion. This was disclosed at a meeting on the construction of the bridge with Communications Adviser Major Gen. (Retd) MA Matin in the chair Monday.

The length of the Padma bridge with four lanes would be around 5.58 kilometres. The bridge would be constructed in cable extra dodged method with rail lines. The people of 19 southern districts would be benefited through the bridge.

^^ Great news. That would be the last major road link would it not? Padma / Ganges is the last major river without a automobile bridge. For the first time ever it would be possible to drive to all parts of the country without a car ferry.
Where exactly is this bridge going to be built?

A little odd though. Jamuna is the widest river in BD before its confluence with Padma, and I am assuming that the Padma bridge will be upstream from that confluence.

^^ That appears to be the best looking of all the bridges so far! I used to live in Charleston, SC, USA until 2005, and they just finished a similar bridge over there, which is a fine sight in person. This one should be great for BD both on aesthetic and utalitarian grounds. I still can't tell from the map where exactly it will be, however.

The proposed 5.58 kilometer long and 25 meter wide four-lane Padma Bridge, which will be built at Mawa-Janjira site over the mighty river Padma, will push the country's GDP by 1.2 per cent, according to Japanese experts.
The Japanese experts, who carried out an extensive feasibility study of the proposed Padma Bridge, said the Mawa-Janjira site was finally recommended, because of higher bankline stability, traffic forecast and rate of economic return.
Economic Internal Rate of Return has been estimated 15.13 percent. After opening the bridge in 2015, the traffic volume at Padma Bridge will reach 21,300 vehicles per day and 41,600 vehicles per day in 2025. It will induce 7,43,000 man per year employment opportunities.
The southwest region of the country would receive the biggest benefits from the bridge, they said.
The experts have recommended 'extradosed' type structure for the Padma Bridge with the provision of railway in the median.
The experts think that it will be possible to start the construction of the Padma Bridge in October 2010 and complete by March 2014. Construction of Jamuna Bridge took three years to be completed.
The Japanese experts, belonging to the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Padma Bridge feasibility study team, yesterday explained various aspects of the proposed Padma Bridge at a seminar organised by JICA at a hotel in the city yesterday.
Communications Minister Barrister Nazmul Huda addressed the opening session of the seminar as the chief guest.
Hidetoshi Ukita, Charge d' Affaires of the Embassy of Japan in Dhaka and Akio Arai, Resident Representative of JICA Bangladesh Office addressed the seminar as guest of honour and special guest respectively.
With Communications Secretary Shafiqul Islam, the inaugural session was also attended by Professor Dr Yozo Fujino of Tokyo University, Chairman of JICA Advisory Committee, Minoru Shibuya, Team Leader of JICA Study Team, and AKM Shamsuddin, Executive Director of JMBA.
High officials from the Communications Ministry, different government departments, multilateral donor agencies, Embassy of Japan and JICA were present.
The total project cost of Padma Bridge has been estimated at US$ 1,257 million. It will take 54 months to be completed.
Of the amount, the foreign currency portion of US$ 895 million will be co-financed by foreign governments and international lending agencies, while the local currency portion of US$ 362 million will be provided by the Bangladesh government, said the experts.
Speaking on the occasion, Nazmul Huda said the government is very keen to start the project as soon as possible. Bangladesh has requested the Japan government to provide further assistance in the form of grants to complete a detailed design, preparation of tender and contract documents, and other related works for commencing the construction of the bridge.
The Communications Minister also requested the JICA Resident Representative to expedite the government's request for further assistance for detailed design work for the project.
He also indicated that Bangladesh would definitely seek assistance from the ADB, JBIC and WB.
Charge d' Affaires Hidetoshi Ukita said the Japan government's association with the Padma Bridge will further consolidate the existing tie of friendship and cooperation between Dhaka and Tokyo.
He said the construction of Padma Bridge with railway provision is most likely to bring about a revolution in the transportation network of the country's southwestern part. It is also expected to bring immense economic and social benefits to the people in the region.
With the bridge connecting the southwest to the central and other parts, he said investment and capital inflow will boost industrial and commercial activities and create increased economic and employment opportunities.
Ukita suggested that it is important to improve the regional and local road networks, including feeder roads to enhance the benefits of the bridge so that rural farmers can easily access quicker modes of transportation to carry their produces to various desired market centres, greatly eliminating the role of middlemen.
JICA Resident Representative Akio Arai said Japan is one of the largest development partners of Bangladesh and actively engaged in the country's development process since the independence in 1971.
He said based on an official request from the Bangladesh government to conduct a feasibility study on construction of Padma Bridge, the Japan government decided to conduct the study under the technical cooperation programme.
Arai also thanked the JMBA and other concerned agencies for their cooperation extended to the study team.
Conducting the environmental and social impact assessments, experts said the Padma Bridge construction would require to acquisition 616.5 ha of land (less than one-thirds of Jamuna Bridge project). Of the land, 554 hactres will be acquired at Janjira, while 62.5 hactres at Mawa. Over 35 percent of the total land will be required for bank protection works, while 25 percent of the land will be used for approach roads in Janjira.
A total of 12,163 meter long approach road, comprises 11,950m long and 25m wide embankment road at Janjira site and 213m long and 25m wide embankment at Mawa site.
Only 58 ponds and 74 ditches will be affected, causing fish production loss of 11 metric tons a year. Total agricultural loss will be 2,400 metric tons, amounting Tk 45 million a year.
The land acquisition and resettlement costs have been estimated at US$ 72 million.
Later, two technical sessions were held with BRAC University Vice-Chancellor Dr Jamilur Reza Chowdhury and Abdul Muyeed Chowdhury, Executive Director of BRAC respectively in the chair.
At the first technical session, Professor Y Fujino and a representative from the ADB made two separate presentations, while at the second technical session, eight topics on Bridge Engineering by K Matsuzawa, Highway Engineering by Y Tsujimoto, River Engineering by N Jitsuhiro, Environmental Impact Assessment by Dr N Islam, Social Impact Assessment and Resettlement Framework by Dr M Zaman, Economic and Financial Evaluation by K Matsuda, Socio Economic Impact by M Homma and Implementation Plan, Conclusion and Recommendation by M Shibuya were presented.

Of course it will connect to southwest of country, but I don't know exactly where the bridge is located (name of the place is Mawa - Janjira). However it won't be located inside Barisal division since Padma does not flow there. Padma borders Rajshahi and Khulna divisions, then flows inside Dhaka division until it meets Meghna.

According to plan it will connect SW region through Jingira - just across Buriganga. For traffic to and from NW (Rangpur, Rajsahi etc) through proposed Padma bridge has to cross Jumuna through bridge or ferry before reaching SW region. In my opinion in future there has to be another Dhaka by pass higway for NW <-> SW traffic.
By the way, do we have enough water in Padma or will have enough water by the the time bridge finishes to justify such bridge? The rate water disappearing from Padma really begs the question.

Thanks for the info, Zayiaf. The sketch is not showing up for me, but that explains why this bridge is wider than the Jamuna bridge, since it is after the confluence of the two rivers. I guess direct link between Dhaka and the southwest was more important than link between Rajshahi and the southwest, although the latter would have required a smaller bridge.

I didn't realize till I saw these pics some weeks ago, that there was a automobile bridge in Bhairab...I thought the only Meghna automobile bridge was further south. So someone confirm this for me...there are two automobile Meghna bridges now? When I lived in BD the only bridge was the 100 year old rail bridge...going across it as a kid was a scary thing. It felt like you were crossing something rickety spanning a miles wide river with almost nothing on either side.

Bangladesh Burma road link agreed
Bangladesh and Burma have signed a deal to construct the first major road between the two countries.
Officials hope that the 25km road, most of which will be inside Burma, will form part of an Asian super highway to boost trade.
Bangladesh has agreed to fund the road building project.
The Burmese Minister for construction who signed the deal in Delhi said he hoped the project would eventually connect India, Thailand and China.
Most of the road connecting the area of Maricha in Bangladesh to Bawlibazar in Burma, will be inside Burma, with only about 2km in Bangladesh.
"This is going to be a milestone in our bilateral relations," Bangladesh Communications Adviser Maj-Gen MA Matin told reporters after the signing of the agreement.
He said that Bangladesh had earlier discussed Chinese involvement in the project and had got a positive response from them.

Communications ministry to seek Tk 320 crore for land acquisition
Construction of Padma Multipurpose Bridge likely to begin in 2009
The communications ministry will seek Tk 320 crore from the government shortly to begin land acquisition at the two sites of the proposed Padma Multipurpose Bridge.
The government had earlier decided to acquire around 900 hectares of land at a cost of Tk 320 crore at Mawa and Jajira, the proposed construction sites of the Padma Bridge.
The Executive Committee of National Economic Council on Monday approved the building of the 5.5-kilometre Padma Bridge at a cost of Tk 10,000 crore. The construction of the bridge is expected to begin from 2009.
‘We will seek the required money from the government to complete land acquisition before 2009,’ said an official of the communications ministry.
He said the land acquisition programme should be taken up immediately as the government might need a long time to settle the compensation issue because of the complicated land-ownership pattern in the country.
He said the government would promulgate the Padma Multipurpose Bridge Land Acquisition Ordinance 2007 to avoid ‘undue compensation claims’ during land acquisition for the bridge.
Some people realised extra money as compensation showing that they lost their houses because of the construction of the bridge over Jamuna in the 1990s.
‘We had a very bad experience and had to pay extra money as compensation for land acquisition before the construction of the Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge, so the authorities this time have planned to enact a new law to prevent illegal claims by unscrupulous quarters,’ he said.
The Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge Authority , which looks after large bridge projects, in a study conducted in 2005 estimated that 918.76 hectares of land would have to be acquired on both the sides — Mawa and Janjira — of the Padma River.
The cost of land acquisition is estimated to be Tk 320.78 crore, according to the study. The deputy commissioners of the concerned districts will be in charge of the land acquisition programme.

International tender for second Dhaka- Chittagong highway likely this year
The caretaker government is pressing forward with a plan to initiate the construction work of the second Dhaka-Chittagong Highway project, the cost of which is estimated at US$ 900 million.
"We're planning to float an international tender for the construction of the proposed second Dhaka-Chittagong highway project within the current fiscal year," a senior communications ministry official said.
"If the feasibility study on the proposed project is completed, the government will invite the tender for construction of the highway on build-own-operate and transfer (BOOT) basis," the official added.
The financing for the highway will come from local and foreign investors who will develop the project and transfer it to the government in 30 years after paying taxes in 20 years.
The Asian Development Bank has commissioned a consulting agency to carry out the feasibility study on the 210-kilometre-long, four-lane highway, widely considered to be the largest ever private infrastructure project in the country.
The official noted that the Roads and Highway Department, the implementing agency, had revised the alignment of the highway to cut costs.
The Malaysian company had proposed to construct six bridges on the rivers of Meghna and Sitalakhya, four toll plazas, parking lots, rest-houses, toilets, filling stations, eateries and mosques at reasonable distances.
In 2006, the Private Infrastructure Committee (PICOM), which oversees the government-endorsed large private infrastructure projects, decided to give the Azimat Consortium, a Malaysian firm, the status of a pre-qualified bidder following its "unsolicited offer" for the construction of the expressway.
But the Private Infrastructure Guidelines do not allow a single investor to be awarded the contract for any government-approved infrastructure project to be developed by private investors.
"Now the government has decided to award the contract to any consortium which will qualify through international bidding," a communications ministry official said.
In its proposal submitted to the communications ministry, the Azimat Consortium, projected the internal rate of return rate of returns would range between 19 to 20 per cent on top of investment.
Similarly, the private builder has to contribute $ 2.1 billion in taxes in 20 years to the government exchequer, while also returning assets worth $10 billion after 30 years of operation of the highway, says the proposal.
It has also forecast the daily diversion of 20 per cent of the existing 16,000 motorised vehicles moving through the Dhaka-Chittagong highway to the expressway.
The proposed four-lane Dhaka-Chittagong highway having world-class facilities will be built on the build-operate-transfer (BOT) basis.
Once constructed, the highway is expected to cut the distance between the two cities by nearly 60 kilometres from the existing 264 kilometres, officials pointed out.
"Commuters will be able to get to the port city of Chittagong from the capital within three hours instead of six to seven hours now it takes, bringing about a revolution in the country's road transport system," a ministry official said.
The BNP-led coalition government had approved the second highway project following the submission of expression of interest by Azimat to the government.
Experts and the business community have long been demanding construction of a second highway to connect the capital to the port city for smooth transportation of goods and facilitate uninterrupted export-import activities through the Chittagong port.
Experts perceive the land acquisition to be the single most challenge for the implementation of the mega-project.
The acquisition of land of 2,500 acres for accommodating the highway itself, service stations, rest rooms, recreation facilities and prayer rooms would take a huge time, officials noted.
The main objective of the second highway is to enhance Chittagong Port's activities by ensuring swift supply and delivery of export and import items from the capital to Chittagong and vice versa.

^^ We should include, as condition for awarding of such contracts, the requirement that the winning company also be responsible for training locals in the construction techniques necessary for such projects. For example, when Malaysia awarded the contract for the Petronas Towers, it stipulated that Pelli had to train native architects / engineers on how to construct such highrises so that future dependence on foreign assistance could be reduced.

^^ Very good news. Along with the ex'way(motorway) they should also create a highspeed rail corridor(like the freight corridors - India is building). This will provide a high speed industrial access between the two major cities of Bangla.

3rd Karnaphuli Bridge to be built within 30 months
China Major Bridge Engineering Company, assigned with the task of constructing the Third Karnaphuli Bridge, expressed optimism to finish its construction within 30 months instead of 38 months, the time limit set earlier.
Around 35 per cent work of the bridge has been finished. Piling work of two pillars on northern bank of the bridge has already been completed. On visiting the site, it was witnessed that the construction work of the bridge is going on in full swing.
Meanwhile, an alternative steel-structured bridge has been built at the bridge site on the river Karnaphuli for constructing the main bridge easily and promptly. Pillars of the original bridge will be constructed with the help of the alternative bridge.
The Third Karnaphuli Bridge would be well equipped with the latest technology. It would contain four separate lanes for the movement of the vehicles according to their speed categories.
The project of constructing the bridge was chalked out in 2000, and its feasibility study was conducted in 2001. Later, the foundation stone of the bridge was laid on April 19, 2003.

CONSTRUCTION OF SECOND DHAKA-CHITTAGONG HIGHWAY
Govt to invite pre-qualification bids to select international firms
The interim government will soon invite applications from the private sector to select the international construction firms which will be allowed to participate in the bidding for construction of a second Dhaka-Chittagong highway.
The main objective of the second highway is to accelerate Chittagong Port’s activities by ensuring swift supply and delivery of export and import items from the capital to Chittagong and vice versa.
Officials said the communications ministry last month approved the pre-qualification bid documents to invite applications from the international firms to build the 210-kilometre highway on the build-own-operate basis at an estimated cost of around $900 million.
’We are going to invite applications so that we can short-list the firms that will participate in the final bidding for the mega-contract,’ said an official of the communications ministry. The Roads and Highways Department of the government will implement the project.
The BNP-Jamaat government in August 2006 approved the construction of the second highway after receiving an ‘unsolicited proposal’ from Azimat Consortium, a Malaysian firm which expressed interest in constructing the four-lane Dhaka-Chittagong highway in five years on the build-own-transfer basis at the cost of $896 million without any financial involvement of the Bangladesh government.
The BNP-Jamaat government also awarded Azimat Consortium the status of a pre-qualified bidder in response to its ‘unsolicited offer’ for construction of the expressway.
But the country’s Private Infrastructure Guidelines do not allow a single investor to be awarded the contract for any government-approved infrastructure project that will be developed by private investors.
‘To comply with the infrastructure guidelines, we are going to short-list some infrastructure companies by inviting pre-qualification bids,’ said an official.
And after doing so the government will invite tenders to award the contract to the most eligible firm among the pre-qualified bidders, said the
official.
‘Azimat Consortium will have to participate in the bidding to win the project,’ said the official.
Azimat Consortium’s proposal also seeks a 35-year concession, including five years of construction, tax holiday for ten years after starting toll collection and duty-free import of equipment for construction purposes.
The proposal divided the toll collection periods into five-year segments and estimated that it may earn about $12.708 billion in tolls over 30 years.
The proposed highway is expected to contribute $2.1 billion to the public exchequer within 20 years of the highway’s construction.
The company proposes to construct 13 fly-overs, two bridges across the Meghna and Shitalakhya, four toll plazas, parking lots, rest-houses, toilets, filling stations, eateries and mosques at reasonable distances. It will also install closed-circuit television cameras at various strategic points.
