That's because almost all those towns and cities have threads of their own. I think its time to start another thread (part II). Though in the urban Kenya section.

Ok lets get this ball rolling then.

Yala Town.

http://www.guide2kenya.com/uploads/info/large/010611072406--Yala%20town.jpg

This is my hometown actually.Went to school in St Mary's School Yala.Yala is a rural town in Gem Constituency in the Nyanza Province of western Kenya.Finding pictures of this small town is hard.As you can see the infrastructure is appalling.Though it is growing slowly.

Yala is home to some of top academics, professionals and intellectuals Kenya has ever produced. This can be attributed to the fact that the people of this town and constituency at large embraced formal education as early as the first quarter of the twentieth century, thanks to the efforts of Chief Odera Akang'o.

Yala is served by a railway station, the Kisumu-Busia highway, Ndanu water treatment works, a jaggery (formerly Yala White Sugar Company) and several top notch schools like St Mary's School-Yala, Sawagongo Sec. School, Nyawara Girls' Secondary and St Teresa's Primary Boarding School among others.

Kitengela - Kajiado County

Kitengela must have been one of the first boom towns in post-moi era.As early as 2001 there was a housing boom in Kitengela.Land was cheap and affordable, jobs were available courtesy of EPZ(export processing zone) that employed close to 15,000 people.

This is significant given that the population of Kitengela was less than 20,000 at the time. What followed in the subsequent years upto 2007 was a mass of unctrolled building and migration into Kitengela.Slums quickly developed, plots were subdivided further and soon nice houses and flats, stood next to tin roof mabati structures. The government ignored upgrading of the existing infrastructure. No central sewerage systems were built, the roads were never tarmacked(and are still not tarmacked),and the town started seeing an exodus of the middle class who had moved in.Perennial water shortages, insecurity and lack of basic services contributed.

To make things worse, several companies in the EPZ closed down due to competition from chinese companies in the US textile industry.Thousands were laid off.The criminal gang Mungiki soon moved in and until now, they impose illegal taxes on business owners and matatus plying the route.

All is not lost for kitengela, the completion of Mombasa Road into a dual carriageway seems to have changed the fortunes of the town. With skyrocketing prices of rent and houses in Nairobi,Kitengela is slowly booming again.Developers have realized that the only way to tackle infrastructure and security problems is by developing gated communities. This has led to a hire demand for houses in kitengela from the middle class who are trooping back.

Yeah, actually you are right. But i swear it looks exactly like Yala.I had not paid attention to the name of the shop.I have been unable to find any pics of Yala.I have no idea why the site had labeled the picture Yala.

Mlolongo

The infamous mlolongo town is about 25KM from Nairobi City Centre. It is most famous for the high number of brothels and sex workers. This small town started out as a truck stop, and it still is.There is a weigh bridge at the town. There are tens of pubs and bars lining the streets of mlolongo.Mlolongo is also experiencing a housing boom with large housing projects under construction and complete.
