The city's retail profile will no longer be the same with Piccolo Galleria's daily 12-hour opening time from 10am to midnight and this might bring on some positive change when other shopping centres join in the fray by keeping longer hours. When more shoppers have a reason to remain in the city later into the night, it might herald a livelier city nightlife and further boost Kuala Lumpur's status as a bustling retail and food and beverage (F&B) destination. Owned and managed by the Piccolo Mondo Gastro group, Piccolo Galleria's 42 shops are located on the first three levels of Wisma Peladang. According to director Suzianna Wong-Svrcula, the company, which also owns 16 Piccolo Mondo restaurants in Kuala Lumpur, has invested RM15mil in the lifestyle boutique shopping centre as part of its business expansion plans. The three-storey shopping centre, with built-up of 32,268 sq ft, was refurbished at a cost of RM8mil and is equipped with modern amenities of escalators, closed-circuit television system and basement car park. About 85% of the net lettable area has been leased to tenants that are occupying shop lots of between 300 and 1,500 sq ft. Wong said the tenants were selected based on their unique merchandise that catered to the needs of the clientele. Among the “Who's Who” of the tenants' list were the group's flagship Italian restaurant, Ristorante L'Opera, as the main tenant as well as other specialty retailers include Da Vinci Jewellery, Photo Imaging Water World, Lucky Gems, SurfRiders and Bread Story. Wong said Piccolo Galleria is positioned as a cozy, European-styled shopping centre selling a variety of lifestyle fashion products. It is designed with a warm and enchanting ambience to capture the mood of bygone days of shopping in cozy, intimate surroundings. “We want to keep the shopping centre moderately sized to allow shoppers to shop around comfortably and at their own pace. By keeping it small and cozy, we hope to attract regular shoppers looking for some unique lifestyle products,” Wong said. Her partner, Zek Catovic said: “As a boutique shopping centre, Piccolo Galleria will strive to be a very communicative and warm shopping centre in line with the trend in many parts of the world. “In Rome and Berlin, shopping centres are open for 24 hours and they exude a warm and cosy ambience. “Kuala Lumpur is fast catching up as an international retail hub and by providing a greater variety of shopping destinations, it will raise the place's vibrancy,” he added. Piccolo Mondo Gastro, which has secured a 62-year lease for the 13-storey Wisma Peladang building, has some interesting plans to bring more cheer to the area. While the boutique shopping centre will be occupying the first three levels of the building, a travellers' hotel will occupy the upper floors. In the subsequent phase, which will kick off by the middle of next year, the remaining 10 floors will be converted into a spa and fitness centre and a travellers’ class hotel. Wong said the hotel, to be built at a cost of RM20mil, would have 180 standard rooms of between 250 to 450 sq ft and 10 suites. “It will be a bed and breakfast hotel targeting the business travellers and tourists and is earmarked for opening in September next year.” Zek, a Bosnian who has resided in Malaysia for the last 12 years, said his greatest business success in Malaysia was the opening of the Piccolo Mondo Restaurant in Wisma Peladang, along Jalan Bukit Bintang, in 1998. “At that time, there were very few attractions for tourists to come to Bukit Bintang. We realised the area, which has one of the best frontage along Bintang Walk, poses lots of potential to be turned into a robust F&B and commercial hub,” he said. Not the ones to rest on their laurels, Wong and Zek are already “cooking up” new ideas to expand their food and restaurant business. “Piccolo Mondo will open up its first bistro restaurant at The Curve next month. We are working on a whole new interesting menu of original Italian food which caters to the changing lifestyles of the people.” Also in the pipeline to kick-off in 2006 is a new factory to produce fresh pasta, spaghetti and lasagna for export to the Asean region. baqthier January 17th, 2005, 09:42 PM Any pics of the interiors? :) Blabbyboy January 20th, 2005, 03:02 AM it's nothing special, from what i could tell when i was there at the start of the year. i don't think it's necessary to have shops open 24 hours for there to be life. i also suggest that they should change the name to "galleria piccollo" (piccolo means small) otherwise italians will go there and think, that's so tacky, using italian name, but the order is wrong. for example, "muzium sastera", not "sastera muzium". baqthier March 23rd, 2005, 03:13 PM ^ ooh I very much prefer 24 hrs! Actually many things I prefer 24 hours unless if I am the one in charge :D Any interior pics? szehoong March 24th, 2005, 06:54 AM i don't think it's necessary to have shops open 24 hours for there to be life. Having 24 hours shops can be a very good thing to Malaysians in a very long time. 24 hrs shop would enable shift workers to get their stuffs more conveniently (I know cause I experienced shift work first hand). Furthermore, Malaysians nowadays are more awake at night than day so the night crowd are very strong esp within the Klang Valley :D Like for the fact that I am so so so glad they reintroduced 24 hrs banking (electronic) as I am an avid night banking type of person. I prefer to do my banking at night because I usually have to go from bank to bank downtown and the traffic and heat during the day is unbearable. :dizzy: Of course now I do most of my banking online already.....it is just that when I need to srop a cheque or get cold hard cash that I would go to a bank :D And speaking of 24hrs convenience........I am still angry over the ruling that hypermarts can't open past midnight. I've been to Tesco Puchong during its 24hrs days and at 1am that place is still packed with lotsa people. baqthier August 30th, 2005, 09:53 PM ok for the 3rd time..any interior pics? :( nazrey January 5th, 2006, 06:18 AM From flickr http://img211.imageshack.us/img211/7362/474553098640d1c1dao3ov.jpg ZaHiRnYa??? In a statement yesterday, BLand said Sinar had entered into an agreement with Abdul Samad Ramli for the sale and purchase of a 31% stake comprising 2.79 million shares in APSB for RM9.3 million. It said Sinar had earlier acquired a 20% stake comprising 1.8 million shares in APSB from Piccolo Corporation Sdn Bhd for RM6 million. APSB holds a long term lease on the building called Wisma Peladang in Jalan Bukit Bintang and had converted it into The Piccolo Hotel and three floors of commercial retail centre called “Piccolo Galleria”. The 168-room Piccolo Hotel is scheduled to start operations by next month. BLand said another 71 rooms would be added to the hotel soon. “We are very excited about the prospects of this investment. Its ideal location and unique design concept should be popular with locals and foreign tourists alike,” said BLand chief executive officer Datuk Francis Ng. nazrey March 3rd, 2008, 03:26 PM Piccolo sets itself apart Monday March 3, 2008 By ANGIE NG TheStar http://star-space.com/archives/2008/3/3/pnews/b_10piccolohotel.jpg An artist's impression of the Piccolo Hotel. PICCOLO Group aims to make a difference in the hospitality sector with the scheduled opening of its maiden hotel, Piccolo Hotel, in Bintang Walk, in Kuala Lumpur, this month. The 239-room boutique hotel, located between KL Plaza and Lot 10 in Jalan Bukit Bintang, is looking to offer a value destination for tourists and business travellers. Director and chief operating officer Suzianna Wong-Svrcula said the hotel would leverage on its excellent location and unique ambience of a cosy and fun boutique hotel to become a favourite destination. “There is much potential to be tapped in the hospitality business, and we are putting in all the finer details to make Piccolo Hotel a success. We will also look at expanding to other regional markets,” Wong told StarBiz. Through its associate company Absolute Prestige Sdn Bhd, Piccolo is keen to build up a chain of boutique hotels in Malaysia and other emerging markets to take advantage of the robust growth in the regional tourism business. With a “green concept” theme, Piccolo Hotel's contemporary design concept depicts the rich marine life and eco-system in Malaysia. The hotel's reception, hallways and rooms are adorned with canvas prints of the abundant marine life and ecology that can be found in Malaysia’s diving havens. The photos were taken by her husband and Piccolo director Dr Kurt Svrcula, who is an accomplished diver, underwater photographer and writer with a strong leaning towards environmental issues. Among his books are Diving in Malaysia and Layang Layang - Diving Malaysia's Last Frontier. He has a collection of more than 20,000 pictures from his many diving outings in East Malaysia, including in Layang Layang, Sipadan and Miri. Suzianna said: “Despite the gruelling hours and hard work of working with the consultants, contractors and interior designers, we persevered in the past two years to ensure Piccolo Hotel starts on the right footing and meet our business objectives of being a well managed and designed boutique hotel. “The aqua-inspired hotel is built out of passion, especially my husband's love of the underwater world.” In 2001, Absolute Prestige paid RM45mil for a 60-year lease on the 13-storey Wisma Peladang building to turn it into a boutique hotel. “We seized the opportunity to sign up the lease for the building as we believe in its strategic location in the heart of the city's tourism belt. Our project will be a fresh addition to this bubbly area,” she said. To make the building intelligent, Kurt said the company had invested close to RM1mil to equip Piccolo Hotel with the latest multimedia technology and dedicated high-speed Internet access, Internet protocol (IP) telephone and television, and a 32ft flat panel LCD television in every room. By the second year of its business, Suzianna said the hotel should be able to see a growth of 75% to 80% to record annual revenue of RM20mil. Room rates start at US$100 per night. Meanwhile, Piccolo Galleria, a lifestyle activity centre with over 30,000 sq ft of rental space, occupies the ground, first and second floors of The Piccolo building. It leases out the space for bar, restaurants, a spa and beauty centre. Its anchor tenant is Ristorante L’Opera, the House of Italian Dining managed by Piccolo Mondo Gastro Sdn Bhd. Suzianna said Berjaya Land Bhd's (BLand) recent acquisition of a 51% stake in Absolute Prestige for RM15.3mil was a stamp of confidence in the hotel-cum-retail building project. Wong will remain as the company's chief operating officer and head the hotel's management team. BLand said the acquisition represented an opportunity for the company to add a city boutique hotel to its portfolio of 12 hotels and resorts around the world. nazrey July 1st, 2009, 09:36 AM by Scousers http://www.flickr.com/photos/38234145@N08/3659581704/ http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2450/3659581704_f2f89e568e_b.jpg |
