CMT to Construct Singapore’s First Olympic-sized Ice-Skating Rink at Jurong Entertainment Centre

Singapore, 5 February 2008 – CapitaMall Trust Management Limited (“CMTML”), the manager of CapitaMall Trust (“CMT”), is pleased to announce that Jurong Entertainment Centre (“JEC”) will house Singapore’s first Olympic-sized ice-skating rink as part of the proposed S$138.2 million asset enhancement work planned at JEC. The Olympic-sized ice-skating rink, together with the rest of the asset enhancement initiatives undertaken at the mall, is expected to be completed by Fourth Quarter 2009.

** On Level 1, the 6-screen cineplex will be relocated to Level 5, a newly created floor at JEC.

** On Level 3, the current non-Olympic-sized rink, measuring 20 metres by 40 metres and operated by Fuji Ice Palace, will be replaced with Singapore’s first Olympic-sized ice skating rink. The existing rink has not only been a huge draw with Singaporeans and ice-skating enthusiasts, but also the venue of choice for competitive events such as ice-hockey tournaments and the Singapore National Figure Skating Championships. It is envisaged that the new Olympic-sized rink, measuring 30 metres by 60 metres, will be flanked by food and beverage operators or restaurants on both sides, providing shoppers with a unique dining experience.

** The retail space on all floors will also be reconfigured so as to maximise the efficiency at the mall. In addition, a rooftop landscaped garden will be constructed on Level 6.

So they're just going to increase the building's height?
I'm surprised anything is going to be kept at all, actually :-)
The highlight of this mall, to me, is the LED screen that was always showing the same Shaw static advertisement for years, with a lot of spoiled LEDs ;-)

If I'm not wrong, this would be the first time CapitaLand is working on a mall which has a cinema whose operator is not Golden Village?

IMM "looks" different now, what they need is a complete revamp of the original building.

Gid
February 8th, 2008, 03:08 PM
"IMM" had already undergone a major upgrade, there is now a new extension, entrance plaza and a roof terrace.

Anyway, S$138.2 million seems like a huge sum for "asset enhancement work"...seems more like a total overhaul to me!

Very timely imo, since JE has been designated as a regional biz ctr. The surrouding huge masses of land looks ready to sprout competing mega-malls anytime, so JEC better buck up.

Plans to redevelop have been suspended indefinitely, from what I understand. No update yet as to when it will resume.

The main con was all ready to start A/A works, and all the tenants are out, yes. But one call was all it took to suspend works :/

There are quite a few problems for this mall I think. Too far from MRT (and bus interchange, so many will not walk over while switching from one to the other), Jurong East's inherent low population (relatively), and just being generally unappealing and that "secondary school" feeling. The A/A will do much to improve that last factor, but the first two will still be major stumbling blocks over the long run, I suspect.

Thanks zhihong for the info....
must be hard for the main con and Captial land. Maybe the Ice RIm is scehduled for Youth Olypmic 2010? The village for youth 2010 is not far away.

Anyway if i not wrong, captial land normally work with golden village and kopitiam. Therefore i think Golden village will takeover the cinplex after redevelopments.

It doesn't speak well for the western region, especially with the govt's plan for the Jurong Lake Region.

Is there anything less attractive about the west region than say, nex at S'goon Central?

Lots of things.Serangoon has the edge because of these few reasons:

1. Very accessible, close to Changi Airport
2. Good mix of flat/condo/bungalow/terraces (Upper level income)
3. Just right next to Upper Serangoon Rd, takes you all the way to Little India/City
4. Plenty of schools ard the area
5. Also the location, it is in between the Sengkang/Punggol hubs and the city.

Jurong still carries the image of a typical low-class industrial town to me, and they already have huge malls like Jurong Point(sits above the MRT)/IMM(Just underwent a major facelift recently). Don't think the demand is any higher than Serangoon right now.

Generally, the West suffer from an "branding" problem, plus some inherent disadvantages. There is a perception that the cool people and better food are lean East, together with the more happening activities. The East is just generally, closer to the action, for lack of a better expression.

It doesn't help that the staying in the West IS slightly farther away from the city than even the mildly North East like Serangoon, or mildly East like Bedok. Of course, traffic conditions usually level things out, in terms of time needed to drive to the city. If you try to compare Bukit Batok / Choa Chu Kang with say Bedok, you do need slightly longer to get to the city from the West.

Regarding Jurong West and Jurong Point: It's just badly planned in my opinion. Jurong West's population is near Tampines levels, and that's not including the HUGE daytime population in the vicinity. The mall, parking space, surrounding road space etc. are just not enough to serve the population. Perhaps our resident West side experts can provide more insight here. :)

^^ I'm not entire sure about the east being more "cool" than the west. But I do think that the west has always been seen as a heartland area that has a more diversified population of locals and new residents, contributed by the location of 3 universities and many 2 polytechnics, and a lot more other educational institutes, as well as the knowledge-driven industries. This does make the west more culturally vibrant, but (it's a taboo topic to elaborate further) to certain groups of people, it may be rather unattractive.

In comparison, the East leans more towards the traditional local character, especially with the locally popular "lifestyle" heartlands like Marine Parade, Pasir Ris and Tampines, and the more rustic Katong area. Which actually contributes to it's popularity among many of the more strictly locals in general.

But in terms of planning, I do not think that there are a lot of difference in between the east and the west. For example, I do not think Tampines Central is facing a situation that is better than Jurong Point.

Back to developing Jurong East, I guess what is the important is that the it has to take into consideration of the diversity and the unique character of a "knowledge city". And at the same time balancing such vibrancy with a touch of what the east can offer in terms of a "higher end" atmosphere in options for commercial and public spaces. I also see special care in developing Ulu Pandan and former Turf Club area and improving their connections to Jurong East and One North as one of the ways to revistalising the reigional centre and the west in general. The completion of JEMP can be combined with more direct transport options between major schools and workplaces to Jurong East to introduce more pedestrian traffic, and providing direct and innovative connections between the transport interchanges and retail/entertainment facilities will be some of the finer touches that will make it a lot more attractive.

I know this is going to be controversial but I think there might have been some political maneuvering to make sure that the Jurong Entertainment Centre and Big Box don't get built in whatever the developers had originally planned.

I guess that URA has recognized that Jurong East Central is too isolated at one corner of Jurong to be really accessible or effective to residents of Jurong as a whole. So rather than abandoning the Jurong East Regional Centre plan altogether, the Jurong Lake Region plan seems like an attempt to shift the focus of the regional centre slightly to the west, in an effort to "involve" Jurong West rather than be separate while being a part of it.

With the shift of the focus, it no longer makes financial or economical sense for someone like CapitaLand to develop JEC as it is because it'll see a larger playground in a few years time.

West region had less choice.... - IMM Jurong Point only 2 near MRT. While East have Tampines One & Mall, Century Square, WHitesands...all near MRT. further more, yesterday news BEdok Mall coming up next year. not counting out Joo Chiat Area in the east.........

The western region may be neglected........

Interesting views on Jurong.

LTA has already embarked to upgrade and add new roads around Jurong East Central area. Two plots already are aside for Jurong General Hospital and Community Hospital. JEC has completed the demolition and would enter the start of construction phase.

Jurong Point is still bustling for residents and workers from Jurong Industrial area. I frequently go there for shopping and dining. Jurong Point 2 is more spacious than other shopping malls and is able to accommodate heavy peak hour crowds. I can drop in to get the gadgets there instead of going to downtown to buy the similar gadgets. This has benefited the entire Jurong residents and workers of Jurong / Tuas industrial area.

Best of all, you can cycle to industrial areas on Sundays as the roads are often deserted and quiet. Popular for cyclists. Jurong Lake Park is now revamping.

Jurong Gateway project takes years to develop the area. Today they show u the plans. Then it would takes few years for the planners to turn it into reality. First concrete plans are already in place from National Parks and LTA, revamping the roads and the parks. More new HDB blocks and condo are being constructed around Jurong area. Far from dead, quiet. It is very bustling at Boon Lay. :)

I study at SIM and the first few days of the week, CapitaLand people were giving out tissue papers in school, with fancy covers and all, advertising the mall at Jurong East, as well as asking for suggestions to name the mall...

One of the highlights of the mall is an ice-skating rink forming the focal point of the upper half of the mall (part of an atrium)...

It's good to hear that this is FINALLY going to finally take place.

JCube, Singapore’s newest retail landmark, will grace the Jurong Lake District, serving residents living in the western region of Singapore, says Capitaland.

The new mall, owned by CapitaMall Trust (CMT) and will be managed by CapitaMalls Asia, will stand on the site of the former Jurong Entertainment Centre (JEC).

Located at the intersection of Jurong East Central 1 and Jurong Gateway Road (formerly known as Jurong East Street 13), JEC was demolished early this year to make way for a brand new mall comprising five levels of retail, two basement levels of car park and a rooftop landscaped plaza.

Measuring approximately 204,000 square feet in net lettable area and twice the original size, the new mall, designed by local architecture firm RSP Architects and international architectural and design firm Benoy, is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2012.

Capitaland says visitors will be able to shop for the latest high-street fashion, dine and entertain in round-the-clock F&B outlets, pubs and bars, some of which will be located around a fully-integrated Olympic-sized ice skating rink on Level 3. Complete with a 463-seat gallery and changing rooms, this will enable Singapore to host international ice skating and ice hockey events and competitions at the rink.

The mall will also be an eco-friendly development fitted with energy-saving features such as a rainwater harvesting tank. Waste heat from the ice rink chiller will also be recycled to heat the water at the rink’s shower rooms and the ice re-surfacing machine.

Work starts on new Jurong mall

AFTER much delay, construction of a new mall on the former Jurong Entertainment Centre site has begun.

Work on the $200 million mall, owned by CapitaMall Trust and managed by CapitaMalls Asia, was stalled in 2008 due to high construction costs and competitive market for resources by the two integrated resorts, which hurt the building industry here.

Looking back, the unforeseen deferment was perhaps a blessing in disguise, said CEO of CapitaMall Trust Simon Ho, who added that the 'financial crisis had yet to wreak its full fury then'.

The mall, to open in the first quarter of 2012, will have a net lettable area of 204,000 sq ft - double the size of the original mall - with rooftop garden, an Olympic-sized 30m by 60m ice-skating rink and a cinema. Its facade will resemble a glistening ice-cube.

It will be named JCube and will be eco-friendly. It will be fitted with energy-saving features such as a rainwater harvesting tank and a water recycling system for the ice rink. Waste heat from the ice rink chiller will also be recycled to heat the water at the rink's shower rooms.

It is also likely to open late, or even 24-hours, to meet the demands of shift workers in the area.

You are welcome :)

Being a long-time resident here, its good to know that plans are underway to remake Jurong.

JediAlf,
I have read with interest your views on Jurong and the West district which are sound and interesting. Both Pandan and Teban Gardens, built by JTC during the 1970s are being rejuvenated; PCN was completed recently; Pandan Reservoir have been spruced up with new amenities; broadwalk and islets.

On commercial sites near Jurong East, the white site should see a contender when the GLS tender by URA close towards the later part of this month. Soil testing are currently underway for a site situated closer to the International Business Park, slated for high rise office buildings according to the site plan for Jurong Lake District (JLD)
It is believed that JLD be built up with sustainability as its principal focus.

Mith252,

An enquiry put forth to the authorities (URA & NEA) had provided the following updates for nearby concerned residents:
Here is the email from URA:

The Big Box development is temporarily put on hold by the owner. As the development is undertaken by a private developer, we do not have information on when the development will be completed. However, please be assured that the relevant agencies are actively working with the developer to restart the project as soon as possible. With regards to the mosquito breeding issue, I have referred your feedback to the National Environment Agency (NEA).

Was followed up with a an email from NEA in response to URA's communique:
I refer to your email to URA and their reply to you on 16 June 2010 and copied to The National Environment Agency (NEA) for our attention on the mosquito breeding issue.

As part of our surveillance programme, we last inspected the implicated site on 8 June 2010. No mosquito breeding was detected during the inspection. The maintenance agent has been taking various mosquito preventive measures at the said site. Their pest control workers have been deployed to carry out oiling and checking at the site two times a week. In addition, the rain water collected in the lower level has been pumped up from the site on daily basis.

We will monitor the site closely.
Thank you.

I received a call from NEA to follow up a few days after the email and to my understanding, NEA is aware and have been stepping up enforcement actions.

From the website of TT International - "Ho Lee Construction Pte Ltd (“Ho Lee”) has on 19 January 2009 commenced winding up proceedings against the Company in relation to its alleged claim for S$12,624,763.63. Ho Lee is a building contractor."
The contractors pulled out and removed the cranes and construction machines from the site after May 2009. TT International ran into trouble with creditors.

It promises to be the new chic mall with everything that you will ever need all under one roof! From fashion, dining, entertainment and even sports, JCube will be a multi-faceted lifestyle destination offering spectacular design and unrivalled shopping experiences to the young, professionals and residents living and working in Jurong Lake District.

JCube is strategically located in the midst of a transportation hub. It is situated at the intersection of Jurong East Central 1 and Jurong Gateway Road (former Jurong East Street 13). The new mall will, therefore, be minutes from the Jurong East MRT Station and bus interchange, capitalising on the vibrancy the area will bring.

The complete makeover of Jurong Entertainment Centre into a brand new mall will offer significant value creation. JCube will capitalise on increased patronage arising from the Government’s plan to transform Jurong into a vibrant commercial and leisure destination in the next 10 to 15 years. Jurong Lake District has been envisioned as a unique lakeside destination for business and leisure. It will feature two distinct but complementary precincts: Jurong Gateway, a vibrant commercial hub; and Lakeside, a waterfront leisure destination.

Jurong Gateway will have an eclectic mix of office, retail, residential, hotel, entertainment, and F&B outlets. It offers a highly attractive location outside the city centre for company headquarters and business services to capitalise on the huge talent pool, the presence of high-value, knowledge-based businesses, tertiary institutions and research hubs in the vicinity.

http://www.greatnewplaces.com/images/Stores/img1424_21032011101324.jpeg

Lakeside, the new waterfront playground, will offer leisure options and greenery. Plans are in the pipeline for new family edutainment attractions as well as other recreational opportunities at the waterfront. A new world-class science centre will also be developed next to the lake in the near future.

The ‘J’ in JCube stands for ‘Jurong’, the mall’s location in Jurong while ‘Cube’ epitomises the architectural concept of the mall - a six-sided development with façade walls designed to resemble an ice cube. The name also connotes the mall’s multi-faceted offerings and the Juxtaposition of enJoyable shopping and sports in Jurong.

Designed by Singapore’s leading architectural firm, RSP Architects, in collaboration with international architectural and design firm, Benoy, the new shopping mall and its concept will definitely be the trendsetting lifestyle destination for professionals, managers, executives and businessmen as well as residents in Jurong.

Expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2012, JCube will comprise five levels of retail, two basement levels of car park and a rooftop landscaped plaza. It will have approximately 204,000 square feet in net lettable area and is expected to be twice the original size as when it was formerly the Jurong Entertainment Centre.

http://www.greatnewplaces.com/images/Stores/img1425_21032011101419.jpeg

Drawing shoppers to the mall will be the latest high-street brands, fashionable restaurants and cafés, pubs, bars, Cineplex, supermarket and even a skating ring. JCube and IMM will complement each other and be the definitive shopping malls in the western part of Singapore. Visitors will be able to shop, dine and entertain in round-the-clock F&B outlets, pubs and bars. Some of these food outlets will be located around Singapore’s first and fully integrated Olympic-size ice skating rink on Level Three. Complete with a 463-seat gallery and changing rooms, Singapore will be able to host international ice skating and ice hockey events and competitions at the rink.

Like all the other CapitaLand malls, JCube will also be flying the green flag. The eco-friendly mall will be fitted with energy-saving features such as a rainwater harvesting tank and an ice rink grey-water recycling system. Waste heat from the ice rink chiller will also be recycled to heat the water at the rink’s shower rooms and the ice re-surfacing machine.

A landscaped garden on the rooftop with a Teflon-covered event space and an outdoor terrace on Level Two will provide the building with green lungs and serve to soften the building façade as well. With all these offerings and more, JCube is already creating a buzz and an air of anticipation as the new chic hangout in Singapore’s west!

JCube: Singapore's Green Mall

The heartland mall is still being constructed but has already won acclaim for its sustainable design.
http://www.indesignlive.asia/articles/projects/project-news/JCube-Singapores-Green-Mall

JCube, a CapitaMall Trust development, will be a large new mall located in the West of Singapore, at the intersection of Jurong East Central 1 and Jurong Gateway Road. Currently in the process of being constructed, it is slated for completion in the first quarter of 2012.

While yet to open its doors, the mall has already won a prestigious award. In the middle of May, the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) of Singapore awarded JCube the Platinum Green Mark Award, their highest honour. The Green Mark Award was begun in January 2005 as a way of differentiating buildings that incorporate internationally recognised sustainability practices. This year, out of the 162 Green Mark Awards given, 45 were Platinum Green Marks.

JCube is being positioned as a trendsetting, multifaceted lifestyle destination for the young, working professionals and the residents in west Singapore and is designed by multi-award winning firm RSP Architects Planners & Engineers.

Its form will be a six-sided development resembling an ice cube. This is almost certainly partly because a fully integrated Olympic-sized ice skating rink (Singapore's first), complete with a 463-seater gallery and changing rooms, will be located on Level 3. Space around the rink will be fully utilised with commercial shop spaces, envisioned to be eventually taken up by high-street fashion outlets, and restaurants, pubs and bars. The ice cube facade will be softened with an outdoor terrace on Level 2 and a rooftop landscaped garden with a Teflon-covered event space on Level 5.

The construction of JCube began with a pre-demolition audit to determine the type and quantity of waste that would be generated. Any materials and equipment that could be salvaged were reused and recycled and the construction of the development heavily features recycled concrete and other green-certified materials.

The green elements incorporated into the design include LED lights and motion sensors to activate the lights at staircase landings as well as solar panels to supplement the mall's energy needs. The ice rink will have heat recovery features to recycle heat and an automatic tube cleaning system installed to increase productivity of the air-conditioning plant. There will also be a rainwater harvesting tank and recycling process of the condensate water of the air handling units.

The developer CapitaMall Trust has also committed to educating JCube's visitors about sustainability and the mall's green features through educational panels and displays.

Imax Corp. is expanding in the Southeast Asian market with a second giant-screen theater in Singapore set to open in 2012.

Shaw Theatres, one of Singapore's top exhibs, inked an agreement to install an Imax theater system in the new JCube entertainment complex.

The agreement comes after the success of Singapore's first commercial Imax venue, the Shaw Theaters Lido Imax, which opened in May and has already generated more than $1.4 million in gross box office

Shaw Theaters, which owns six multiplexes in Singapore, has been operating cinemas in the city-state since 1927. Imax has 560 theaters in 46 countries.

CapitaLand JCube's render showed lights emanating along the building's facade.
With Mith252 good perspective, we can see the physical construction in place for the LED light bar which are joint at each juncture, providing for some form of colourful light play across the building in the evenings.
With a hint from Benoy's design for Ion Orchard, there is opportunity for the lights to emanate in a random fashion, or programmable to shine from each light bar giving an illusion of light streaking through the building.

Cool lighting for JCube!
There is a chance for an LED screen to be installed on JCube's front facade, just directly below JCube's and CapitalMall Trust's corporate logo. It could be either an SPH MBO Digital OOH (DOOH) or Digital Out of House signage for advertising commercials, similar to 313@Somerset or Mediacorp's OOH media on Ion Orchard or Orchard Central facades.

This could add on some vibe to JCube's exciting facade from vantage points across the road, especially from Jurong East elevated station platform and the temporary bus interchange at ground level.
I hope for a Shibuya-109 style LED animated projection but here is hoping future malls in the area would give Jurong East that favour akin to Tokyo's.

S'pore's first Olympic-size ice rink to open in April
by Philip Goh Haw Hann
Updated 10:57 AM Mar 21, 2012

The Republic's hopes of sending an athlete to the Winter Olympics were boosted with the announcement of the opening of an Olympic-size skating rink here next month.

According to a media release yesterday, the new 60m by 30m rink is located on level 3 of the new JCube shopping mall in Jurong East and will open on April 2 when the mall opens for business.

Apart from recreational skating, the rink will also be suitable for figure skating, speed skating and ice hockey, which are sports that are competed at the Winter Olympic Games.

The Singapore Sports Council (SSC) has awarded the management of the rink - which has a 460-seat gallery and rink-side dining - to CapitaLand Retail Management, the wholly-owned subsidiary of CapitaMalls Asia.

Welcoming the announcement of the new rink, Singapore Ice Skating Association president Sonja Chong told Today: "Being the first Olympic size rink here, JCube offers more opportunities to reach out to the community and to bring internationally-recognised events to Singapore.

"JCube has been developed with the community in mind. I am excited to be able to reach out to more Singaporeans and make the sport of ice skating more accessible." PHILIP GOH

Singapore’s first Olympic-size ice rink to open on 2 April 2012 at JCube in Jurong East Singapore Sports Council awards rink management contract to CapitaMalls Asia subsidiary

Singapore, 20 March 2012 – Fans of ice sports can look forward to a brand-new skating experience at The Rink, Singapore’s first Olympic-size ice rink. The Rink will open on 2 April 2012 at the new JCube shopping mall in Jurong East – the same day as the mall opening.

The Singapore Sports Council (SSC) has awarded the rink management contract to CapitaMalls Asia’s (SGX: JS8 and HKEx: 6813) wholly-owned subsidiary, CapitaLand Retail Management Pte Ltd1. Under the management agreement, CapitaLand Retail Management will manage the day-to-day operations of The Rink.

Located at the heart of JCube on Level 3, the ice rink measures 60 metres by 30 metres. The Rink will be able to host activities such as recreational skating, figure skating, speed skating and ice hockey. With its 460-seat gallery, mall-goers can get up close to the excitement of the rink activities. They will also be able to enjoy the only rink-side dining experience in Singapore.

Mr Lim Beng Chee, CEO of CapitaMalls Asia, said, “CapitaMalls Asia is pleased to have been awarded the contract to manage the ice rink at JCube. An entertainment-focused mall with extended hours, JCube and its ice rink will combine both retail therapy and ice sports.

Shoppers can also exercise and get fit in the cool comfort of the rink. With its extended-hours dining options, JCube will become the meeting place for anyone with an interest in ice sports and a late-night hangout for people in the western part of Singapore. We will continue to work closely with the Singapore Sports Council to bring exciting events and activities to the rink and make ice sports easily accessible to all.”

About JCube

Nestled in the heart of the up and coming Jurong Lake District, JCube is an ultra-hip mall with Singapore’s only Olympic-size ice rink and IMAX cinema in Singapore’s suburbs. The mall boasts a unique faceted façade inspired by an ice cube, reflecting natural light by day and sparkling by night. JCube has been awarded the Building and Construction Authority’s highest green accolade – Green Mark Platinum – for its environmentally friendly features.

Located close to Jurong East MRT interchange and bus interchange, JCube, which replaces the former Jurong Entertainment Centre, has a net lettable area of 210,000 sq ft in its five levels of retail, dining and entertainment options. There are two levels of basement parking and arooftop terrace-cum-event space on Level 5, called JStage. With shops from Basement 1 to Level 4, JCube has a net lettable area of 210,000 square feet, and more than 90% of the mall has been pre-leased. JCube will also be home to Singapore’s first Olympic-size ice rink, offering the only rink-side dining experience in Singapore, and the first IMAX cinema in the suburbs. It is owned by CapitaMall Trust and managed by CapitaMalls

This is wonderful news for the sizeable Japanese community and companies residing and working in the west of Singapore!

I am hoping for Muji or Uniqlo to open in the future at Jurong Gateway and maybe departmental stores such as Isetan, Takashimaya or even Mitsukoshi.

Please, no more UNIQLO. There are too many already. Mitsukoshi, highly doubt it, since it's Isetan.

Hi ddes, Lend Lease will be bringing in Uniqlo to JEM for Q2 2013. Founder of Fast Retailing, Tadashi-san is positioning Uniqlo in expanding aggressively in South East Asia and China with the rise of the middle income folks.

Hopefully, you can find a good brand which you like for Jurong Gateway!

check out my photos of JCube here (http://jieshun.wordpress.com/2012/04/08/jcube/)! Quite an awesome mall, except walkways are too cramped. A really good tenant mix, with a huge chunk of dining outlets.

The mall dazzles at night with its lighting! It does look pretty meh in the day, but its better than it being a square box with no windows or lines or rooftop structures.

^^Been to Jcube a few days ago. It is quite crowded right now. The main draw right now is the skating rink. :)

News about a skating event that is going to be held in JCube.

Ice Skating: Singapore skaters gear up for inaugural ISU competition
By Patwant Singh | Posted: 28 March 2013 2030 hrs

SINGAPORE: Things are set to get fast and furious on the ice as Singapore's only Olympic-sized rink prepares to host its first international competition.

And that's great news for Singapore where interest in ice skating is heating up.

The skaters are going through their final preparations ahead of the inaugural ISU (International Skating Union) World Development Trophy.

Spectators can expect the action to be fast and furious, with plenty of fancy footwork... as 40 youth skaters from Singapore and seven other countries clock speeds of 60 kilometres or more at the April 13 competition.

Sonja Chong, President of Singapore Ice Skating Association, said: "Singapore is a young country in ice skating particularly in short track speed skating, so there's a need for a development level competition so that our kids have more exposure to competitions where the playing field is a little bit more even."

The local skaters are familiar with the rink and have the home court advantage, but they're still feeling the pressure.

Shawn Ting, a national skater (short track speed), said: "I do feel pressured that my home fans are watching us when we compete but I am also excited that they are here to support me and to watch us."

Deanna See, a national skater (short track speed), said: "With the Olympic-sized rink, of course it has helped us a lot because now we have proper training with the rink. Like previously without the rink we could not practice on the official track, now that we have the rink it has helped us a lot."

More such competitions are in the pipeline as Singapore targets Winter Olympic glory.

After this competition the Singapore Ice Skating Association is looking at hosting an even bigger event, likely to be the ISU or International Skating Union World Cup.

With proper funding and support from sponsors, it could be staged as early as 2015 at the new Singapore Sports Hub.
