Cambodia will land Ninth Place in SEA Games Indonesia 2011

http://joemelseagames2011.blogspot.com

Cambodia will find it difficult in winning gold medals in this year's SEA Games in Indonesia. Historically Cambodians just get 3 to 6 gold medals in the SEA Games. But they have more opportunities now to win more gold medals since there are many events in this year's SEA Games. But still I believe they will land ninth over-all in this year's SEA Games in Indonesia.

Are there enough seats for the audience? I mean the tennis court

As far as I remember, the tennis venue has more than one court, but somehow the pic posted above is only showing one court (and it's not the main one).

The main court has more seats if i'm not mistaken (approx 1,000 seats).

the court you post (not the main court) already has more then 1000 seats.

6 blocks on the side each has 150 seats each, plus a lot more on the 2 end.

Indonesian SEA Games Organizers in Final Sprint

Palembang. At the Aquatic Center in the Jakabaring Sports Complex, two men took turns to jump fully clothed into the 7m-deep dive pools, to the amusement of onlookers. They were honoring a pledge to make the jump if the venue was completed in one month and in time for the athletes who will be using it when the 26th Southeast Asian Games begin next week.

Their efforts brought cheers from the 200 officials and workers watching them - and great relief for Games host Indonesia. The organizers have drawn flak for delays in completing the venue and other preparations for the Games.

Across the venue ground, 4,000 workers comprising soldiers, students and civilian volunteers helped to clear the roads, pick up rubbish or arrange plants and flower pots.

Indeed, the SEA Games spirit is clearly in the air in Palembang city, which is co-hosting the Nov11-22 competition with Jakarta and will host 21 of the 44 sports.

Flags of the 11 countries taking part in the Games are already up and flying along roads and at major buildings and hotels.

Some billboards display the Games motto - ‘United and Rising’ - while others declare ‘Sumsel Siap’, or South Sumatra is ready. Palembang is the provincial capital of South Sumatra.

A huge digital countdown clock board sits at the entrance to the Ampera Bridge, which links both sides of the Musi River and is the main road leading to the complex.

Yesterday, balloons of Games mascots Modo and Modi - a pair of Komodo dragons - were strung up over the Jakabaring complex and loud music blaring from some venues added to the atmosphere.

But the city’s slow preparations and delays in the past months had been a lightning rod for criticism and doubts.

Despite Indonesian officials’ optimism that everything will be ready come Nov 11, it appears that there are some loose ends to be tied up.

The Jakabaring complex sits on a 300ha site that was formerly swampland.

When The Straits Times visited it over two days this week, there were still mud-strewn roads, and pools of water had collected in the swamp-like land adjoining the site.

Furnishings at various venues within the complex were still being fitted, with work being done around the clock and workers put on one of three shifts.

The complex was a hive of activity as cars and buses ferried workers, athletes and officials there, while trucks with ‘priority’ labels delivered cement, furnishings, equipment and other things.

Some venues held test events and Indonesia’s national baseball athletes were spotted practicing on Wednesday.

South Sumatra Governor Alex Noerdin inspected the site and preparations on board a golf buggy on Thursday morning.

‘We won the bid to host the Games only in November last year, but we were up for the challenge. We wanted to prove that a provincial city outside Jakarta is capable of hosting such a regional competition,’ he told The Straits Times.

‘This area was once a swampland. To be able to convert it into a sports complex with mostly new structures is an achievement for us.’

He believes that this will benefit the local economy and tourism. The venues can be used to host other national or regional sporting events.

Already, residents were seen jet-skiing on the artificial lake created in front of the shooting venue.

But Mr Alex also acknowledged the many problems that had cropped up in the past few months and affected the progress of the project.

One was the massive corruption scandal involving former politician Muhammad Nazaruddin, who is accused of taking 25 billion rupiah (S$3.6 million) in bribes from a company contracted to build the athletes’ dormitory.

In September, organizing committee chairman Rita Subowo said the whole committee would quit unless it received the funds needed to prepare for the Games. It took a presidential decree to release the money, which had been held up by red tape.

The latest problem has to do with the weather. The rainy season has arrived and three days of showers had slowed work and halted rehearsals for the opening ceremony.

‘We are getting the help of meteorologists to use chemicals to stop the formation of clouds over our areas,’ Mr Alex said.

‘We will also use our pawang [holy men] to chase the rain away,’ he added with a chuckle.

Ticket Issues Latest Worry for Harried SEA Games Organizers

When Vietnam and the Philippines kicked off the football competition of the Southeast Asian Games on Thursday, the sea of empty seats raised eyebrows among organizers and fans.

While the official attendance for the Group B opener was announced as 2,000, barely 400 spectators were in the stands to watch Vietnam’s 3-1 win. In the second match, in which Burma edged Laos 3-2, less than 100 Burmese fans and about 300 security officers were present.

Rachmat Gobel, director general of the SEA Games organizing committee (Inasoc), said after the matches that time was too tight to sell more tickets.

“The schedule was changed and it wasn’t possible to prepare tickets with such a tight deadline for the opening game,” he said on Thursday. “Fortunately, Indonesia didn’t play on Day 1. It would’ve been a big loss for us if Indonesia played.”

Instead, limited tickets costing Rp 25,000 ($2.80) were sold.

Despite an uninspiring start, Rachmat said he was confident Inasoc could provide tickets for the opening and closing ceremonies and for every event.

Tickets are available online at Rajakarcis, but fans have complained about difficulties in exchanging their vouchers for actual tickets. They have also complained about changing prices.

On its Web site, Rajakarcis sells football tickets for the group stage at Gelora Bung Karno for between Rp 525,000 for VVIP seats and Rp 26,250 for Category 4 seats. The prices do not include 5 percent tax.

For the group stage at Lebak Bulus Stadium, Rajakarcis quotes Rp 525,000 plus tax for a VIP ticket and Rp 52,500 plus tax for Category 2, the cheapest ticket.

Inasoc ticketing official Agus Mauro denied any knowledge of the pricing, a worrying sign with the Games set to start on Nov. 11.

“It’s just miscommunication. We have yet to release the ticket prices. Rajakarcis announced the wrong prices. We don’t know about the pricing policy as it was decided by the Inasoc board,” Agus said on Friday.

He also said that football tickets were only sold on match days and Inasoc had cooperated with the embassies of participating countries who wanted to buy tickets.

Inasoc plans to sell the tickets for popular events, such as football, basketball and badminton, while lesser-known sports are likely to have free admission.

“I think the stadium was empty because sports fans weren’t aware the SEA Games had already started. We hope fans start to come to the venues and watch when Indonesian athletes play,” Agus said.

As work continued apace to get Indonesia ready to host the Southeast Asian Games, the host nation’s athletes received a rousing send-off on Friday.

The Indonesian Olympic Committee (KOI) and other officials gave a final pep talk to what could be the country’s largest contingent — 1,059 athletes set to compete in 545 events in 42 sports.

“Every time you face your enemy, remember that you are competing in your home country. Bring out your utmost, give your best. Make other athletes remember how to sing our national anthem, ‘Indonesia Raya,’ ” Minister of Youth and Sports Affairs Andi Mallarangeng told the athletes during his speech.

By the time Friday’s ceremony began, athletes in several sports — such as baseball, beach volleyball, shooting, softball, water skiing and wrestling — had already left for co-host Palembang to get an early start on adapting to the facilities.

Indonesia chef de mission Tono Suratman said 534 more athletes and officials would leave for Palembang today.

The body in charge of preparing the athletes, the Golden Indonesia Program (Prima), announced its target of at least 150 gold medals as the host tries to return to the top of the medals table.

Indonesia has not led the medal count since 1997, the last year it hosted the Games. That year, it claimed 194 gold medals, 101 silver and 115 bronze, but the best it has done since is third place.

The country’s athletes have climbed back up the table since Indonesia’s low point at the 2005 Games in Manila, sliding down to fifth place. They climbed to fourth at the 2007 Games in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, before moving back into third at the 2007 event in Vientiane, Laos.

The government has pledged Rp 200 million ($22,000) for each gold medal, while awards for silver and bronze have yet to be determined. “It is good the government still pays attention to athletes’ hard work. In my opinion, the bonus is a motivation for athletes to work harder and give their best performance,” said Aswar, who will compete in karate.

Cambodia start with bronze

Monday, 14 November 2011 12:00
H S Manjunath

Cambodia’s medal haul at the 26th SEA Games in Indonesia began with a bronze on Saturday when 17-year-old Sorn Seavmey went down fighting to Vietnam’s Thanh Thao Nguyen in the semifinals of the women’s taekwondo lightweight category at Jakarta’s POPKI Sport Hall.

Braving a slight chin injury suffered during the quarterfinals, the Phnom Penh student staged a splendid rally after a somewhat sluggish beginning, although the Vietnamese fighter kept her poise to emerge winner.

In the final of the 57-62kg event later on Saturday, Indonesia’s Vony Dian, who had an easy time against Victoria of Myanmar in the other semifinal, proved too strong for Thanh Thao Nguyen.

“I am happy I won the country’s first medal and, even if it is only a bronze, I hope this will inspire my team-mates to go for gold,” said Sorn Seavmey after her fight.

Cambodia’s strongest prospects Sorn Davin and Chhoeung Puthearim are well in line for medal honours when they get down to their fights today.

While Chhoeung Puthearim faces Aida Lemos of East Timor in the bantamweight class (49-53kg), a victory for Sorn Davin over Maznal Samad of Malaysia in the middleweight division (68-73kg) has now pitched her into the medal round. ASEAN Championship gold medallist Sorn Davin is assured of a bronze but she is well on course for a possible gold strike.

Meanwhile in the men’s section, a disappointing end marked United States-based Tubbs Daren’s campaign when he went out of the lightweight class to Thanh Tam Duong of Vietnam.

Puth Bunthoeun takes on Naing Dwe Shein of Myanmar in today’s quarterfinal of the finweight category (not exceeding 54kg).

The Kingdom’s medal aspirations are also carried into the middleweight (80-87kg) semifinal by Phon Virak, who faces a tough rival in Jose Anthony Soria of the Philippines.

Over at Jakarta’s Senayan Sport Complex, Cambodia’s badminton team suffered a 3-0 loss to Thailand in the men’s team competition.

Yesterday in the co-hosting city of Palembang, Tennis Cambodia shattered a decades-long SEA Games hoodoo by reaching the medal round of the men’s team competition for the first time. The Kingdom’s historic march towards a podium finish was inspired by the No 1 Bun Kenny, who won his crucial singles and then partnered Orn Sambath to pull off a doubles victory and a 2-1 beating of Laos in the quarterfinals.

Cambodia will now face host nation Indonesia in the semifinal, with at least a bronze medal well secured.

In more ways than one it was a roller coaster ride for Cambodia when Orn Sambath’s determined second set rally was not good enough to trouble Lasavady Vitaya’s resolute 6-1, 6-4 display in the first rubber. But Bun Kenny, whose one year stint on the tour has netted him four ATP points and taken his world ranking to just over 1,200th, firmly stepped in to repair the damage.

In less than an hour, Kenny was home and dry as a 6-2, 6-0 winner over Laos No 1 Keo Dalasouk Donedy to level the match scores at 1-1.

It was the Laotian pair of Lasavady Vitaya and Keo Dalasouk Donedy who came out firing in the first set of the doubles match as the Cambodian duo struggled to strike a good partnership and rhythm.

With Kenny controlling the pace and often dominating the net, Sambath also raised his own game to chip in with some good interceptions at the start of the second set. Slowly but steadily, the Cambodians took control of the court and began to impose the tempo of their choice on the Laotian opponents.

After running through the second set, Kenny and Sambath were all over their rivals as they raced to a love set and an epoch making triumph of 3-6, 6-2, 6-0.

“I was a bit worried when we lost the first set in doubles but I knew very well that we could turn things around and I am glad we managed to do just that,” Bun Kenny said over the phone yesterday.

Tennis Federation of Cambodia General Secretary Tep Rithivit said he couldn’t conceal his joy at the result. “I just can’t imagine that 14 years ago we couldn’t win a single game. In the last two editions we have won two individual bronze medals and here we are assured of at least a team bronze and a definite chance for silver or gold,” he said.

National coach Braen Aneiros was generous in his praise for Bun Kenny. “He was under a lot of pressure, especially in the doubles, but he not only raised his own game but inspired Orn Sambath to his best. We face a tougher opponents in Indonesia, but on Kenny’s current form he has a good chance to make a mark,” he said.

On Saturday at the same Jakabaring Sport Complex in Palembang, Cambodia’s medal hopes were drowned in the pool. Though Hem Thon Ponloeu got into the 50 metres butterfly final, he could hardly make a mark, finishing seventh overall.

Lim Odam and Maximov Chamraen Youri failed to qualify for the 50m butterfly, finishing sixth and seventh respectively in their heats.

There were further disappointments in store for Cambodia on the track on Saturday. Much was expected from Swiss-based sprinter Pin Wanheap in the men’s 100 metres when he came through the heats to make it to the final line up in a time of 11.09.

Though Pin Wanheap ran well above himself to record 10.91 in the final, it was only good enough to get him into seventh place. He now takes a shot at the 200m. Cambodia’s second entry in the men’s 100m, Sar Purveasna, showed up with 11.46 in the heats and failed to qualify.

The Kingdom’s athletics hopes now rest on Kieng Samorn in the metric mile and Takizaki Kuniaki in the marathon.

Cambodia coach Lee Tae-Hoon may face the chop when he returns to Phnom Penh this week after a disappointing SEA Games campaign in which they failed to make a point.

Three consecutive defeats in Jakarta last week meant Cambodia already knew they were the first side to be eliminated from the men’s football tournament at the 26th SEA Games going into yesterday’s Group A encounter with Malaysia. A 4-1 defeat by the defending champions at the Gelong Bung Larno Stadium saw Lee Tae-Hoon’s side return home with their tails between their legs having conceded 16 goals with just two in reply.

Chhin Chhoeun, who scored a wondrous goal against Singapore last Wednesday, doubled his tally in Jakarta with a 61st minute strike yesterday after Malaysia had finished the first half 3-0 up.

Despite the heroics from the National Defence Ministry right winger, some all too common defensive frailties allowed Malaysia to add a fourth in injury time.

On Friday, regional powerhouses Thailand had recorded a comfortable 4-0 victory over Cambodia, who were without skipper Khuon Laboravy and inspirational keeper Sou Yaty due to injuries, while central midfielder Chhun Sothearath was suspended.

The Thais showed no mercy to their neighbours, edging 1-0 ahead 1-0 in the first session before netting three more in the last 20 minutes.

Of the few positives to take back from the SEA Games, Chhin Chhoeun should feel proud of his scores while stoppers Sou Yaty and Friday’s replacement Um Vichet both made fine contributions between the sticks.

Meanwhile, South Korean coach Lee faces the gauntlet back at home with many Cambodian football fans calling for his resignation through social media websites. However, Lee told official ASEAN football website after the match against Thailand that Cambodia had little expectations from such a tough group.

“We were given some hard lessons but I think that it is important we take these lessons to better prepare us for the future” he said.

“We have some players with experience of having played international matches before but for most, they are still young and they did not have the exposure at this level. The campaign was not a total loss. The players have been learning from game to game, and I think that they are better players as compared to when they first came to Jakarta.

“I believe that this team can only get stronger and they will definitely be better at the next SEA Games in 2013 [in Naypyidaw, Myanmar],” he added.

Cambodia may, however, take some comfort in the fact that yesterday’s other Group A game ensured their bitter rivals Thailand also failed to make the knockout stage. The 13-time SEA Games champions, who ended the tempestuous match with nine men, were beaten 3-1 by Indonesia, a result which secured the hosts safe passage to the semifinals and condemned Thailand to a second early elimination in as many tournaments.

The runners-up spot in Group A seems likely to be taken by Malaysia, who face Indonesia in the concluding group fixture on Thursday, while Singapore require a resounding victory over Thailand and hope the hosts can do them a favour by beating the holders.

In Group B ties played at Lebak Bulus stadium yesterday, Myanmar ensured their advance to the semis with a 5-0 thumping of the Philippines. Vietnam will join them in the next round after an 8-0 rout of Brunei.

Surprise package East Timor saw their hopes of qualifying vanish via a 3-0 defeat to Laos yesterday, rendering subsequent Group B games tomorrow and Thursday academic.

First golden glory at SEA Games

Tuesday, 15 November 2011

Cambodia’s desperate search for gold at the SEA Games met with success at Jakarta’s Sunter Sports Centre yesterday when Ly Boramy produced a cameo performance in the vovinam category he has always excelled – single man without weapon. Displaying some of his best fighting instincts in crunch situations, Ly Boramy, who celebrated his 25th birthday last week, emerged at the top of the heap with 278 points to grab Cambodia’s first gold medal from the 26th edition of the biennial mega event.

Vietnam’s Tran Cong Tao with 273 points picked up the silver while the bronze went to Indonesia’s I Made Poranmaya on 269 points.

With accolades for his outstanding feat pouring in from all corners of the Kingdom, Ly Boramy, for whom a US$15,000 bonanza awaits back home, could well extend his golden streak when he unleashes himself in the men’s attacking by leg class as well as figuring in the multi weapon fights involving mixed pairs.

Cambodia also opened their silver medal account yesterday when Tin Pheap lost to Vo Nguyen Linh of Vietnam in the final of the men’s 55kg vovinam combat. In the semifinals, Tin Pheap had beaten Kadek Dwi Dharmadi of Indonesia.

The men's attacking by leg team claimed another silver for the Kingdom, while Pal Chhorraksmy added a third in single women weapon. Mao Monita took bronze in women's 50kg.

In taekwondo, Cambodia scooped up a bronze medal, their third so far at the POPKI Sport Hall, after Chhoeung Puthearim went down to Indonesia’s Siska Permata Sari in the women’s bantamweight semifinals. On the way up, Chhoeung Puthearim easily got the measure of East Timor’s Aida Lemos.

Earlier, Cambodia’s Phon Virak had gone down gamely to Jose Anthony Soria of the Philippines in the semifinals to bring home a taekwondo bronze medal in men’s middleweight. Superior technique carried the day for the Filipino even as Phon Virak put up a stiff fight all the way.

In today’s action, Cambodia’s brightest stars are set to shine with Sorn Davin getting down to fight Indonesia’s Catur Yuri Riyanin in the women’s middleweight semifinals while Chhoy Bouthorn squares off against Jerranat Nakaviraj of Thailand in the men’s flyweight quarterfinals.

At the tennis courts of Palembang’s Jakabaring Sport Complex yesterday, hosts Indonesia stormed into the men’s team final following their 2-0 victory over Cambodia. However, misfortune struck Cambodia’s top player Bun Kenny just when he was poised for a sensational upset against Indonesian No 1 Christopher Rungkat in the first singles rubber.

Playing to his known best, Kenny wrapped up the first set 6-3 in under 40 minutes, a remarkable turnaround against an opponent to whom he had lost several times before.

But at the start of the second set, Kenny was struck by full body cramps, as serious as the one he had suffered a year ago at a Futures event in Thailand. A visibly distraught Kenny pulled out of the contest.

In the second singles rubber, Orn Sambath proved no match for Indonesian No 2 Albert Sidh who won 6-2, 6-2 without extending himself. Cambodia ensured themselves the bronze medal after beating Laos 2-1 on Sunday.

“It was rather unfortunate. I had not seen Kenny play better than this when he took the first set then the cramps took over,” said national coach Braen Aneiros. “I hope he recovers in time for the men’s singles [event] starting on Wednesday.”

According to Tennis Federation of Cambodia Secretary General Tep Rithivit, Bun Kenny has gone through a medical evaluation and is expected to be fit and well after some rest. “It had happened to him before. The reason could be anything. We are getting him thoroughly examined and I hope there is nothing serious. This setback apart, the team has brought us our first medal and we have to acknowledge that,” said the Secretary General.

The only note of cheer on an otherwise disappointing day at the 26th SEA Games for Cambodia was Patrick Tom’s inspired round of golf as he kept his chances of a medal alive at the Jagorawi Country Club in Jakarta yesterday. The 24-year-old, with a first round of 73, was three shots off the pace set by joint leaders Low Khai Jie of Malaysia and home favourite George G.

Cambodia’s second entry, 19-year-old Seng Vanseiha, drifted out to a score of 83. The second and the final round is set for a 7am tee off today.

At the Kelapa Gading Sports Mall yesterday, title favourites the Philippines powered their way to a convincing 127-68 victory over Cambodia in their Group A basketball fixture even as Thailand registered a 85-54 victory over Vietnam.

Hosts Indonesia proved too good for Cambodia in indoor volleyball, handing out the Kingdom’s spikers a 25-10, 25-22, 25-10 defeat at the University of Sriwijaya in Palembang.

Cambodia’s string of disappointing results on the track extended to the men’s 1500m finals when Kieng Samorn trotted in ninth out of 11 runners. Taking off from Lane 5, Kieng Samorn found the early pace too hot to handle and was beaten out of sight in 4:11.26.

In a needle finish, Indonesia’s Ridwan at 3:47.63 edged out Melvin M Guarie of the Phillipines by a fraction of a second with Mohd Jironi Riduan of Malaysia close behind in third.

Cambodia’s combination of Nay Saravey and Tang Hav made a winning start in the men’s table tennis competition yesterday with a first round victory over Da Silva Elias Aka and De Jesus Arasujo of Timor Leste 11-8, 11-6, 9-11, 11-8.

It turned out to be a bitter sweet Sunday for Cambodia on the petanque front. The 2007 and 2009 gold medallist Sok Chan Mean had to settle for a bronze this time in the men’s singles. But in the women’s singles, the highly rated Ouk Srey Mom returned with a rather disappointing card of three wins and two defeats to go out of the medal range.

The focus now shifts to the women’s doubles where the Duong Dina and Oum Chantrea began their round-robin campaign yesterday.

Cambodia’s Or Chan Daren and his petanque partner Yim Sophorn won gold in men’s doubles at the SEA Games in Indonesia yesterday.

Blazing the golden trail of vovinam fighter Ly Boramy, the petanque men’s doubles pair of Or Chan Daren and Yim Sophorn struck Cambodia’s second gold at the 26th SEA Games in Indonesia yesterday as a clutch of silver medals and two bronze varieties kept the Kingdom’s contingent buoyant.

The Cambodian duo were called upon to do their best in the final at the courts of Palembang’s Jakabaring Sport Complex which produced a nail baiting finish that saw Or Chan Daren and Yim Sophorn keep their nerves to down Vietnamese players Huynh Cong Tam and Nguyen Van Dung 13-12.

In sharp contrast to this grandstand finish came a tame display in the final by Cambodia’s women’s doubles pairing of Duong Dina and Oum Chantrea who went out without a trace 13-0 against Thailand’s Thongsri Thamakord and Phantipha Wongchuv. However, having come out of a tough semifinal against Vietnam’s Vu Thi Thu and Nguyen Thi Trang 13-11, The Cambodians were more than happy to pick up a silver medal.

There was a tinge of disappointment over some other near misses of golds in Jakarta yesterday.

Current ASEAN champion in her class Sorn Davin found the going tough against Ha Thi Nguyen of Vietnam in the final and had to settle for a silver medal, the first for the country in taekwondo on the top of three bronzes so far. On the way to the final, Sorn Davin had dealt expertly with Indonesia’s Katur Yuni Riyanin in the semis.

Cambodia’s silver medal count was kept ticking by Vovinam fighters as Pal Chhoraksmy garnered a double silver, her first coming overnight. On the men’s front, Lim Paov Houngyan lost a close 60kg final.

Meanwhile, a strong third quarter showing ensured Thailand a comfortable 85-62 victory over Cambodia in men’s basketball. The Thais led all the way, except for a brief portion of the fourth quarter when the two sides came up with 18 points apiece. But the 13-point cushion for Thailand proved to big a gap for Cambodia to bridge.

This was Cambodia’s second defeat in the four-team group having been flattened in the opener against reigning champions the Philippines 127-68 on Monday. Cambodia are effectively out of the competition and play Vietnam in an inconsequential pool tie today.

Late on Monday, Cambodia’s gold medallist Ly Boramy figured prominently among the vovinam foursome going for gold in the men’s attacking by leg. But the Cambodian quartet of Ly Boramy, San Socheat, Chrin Bunlong and Kat Sopheak lost out in the final and had to settle for silvers.

Cambodia’s bronze count was boosted by two more on Monday evening after Chab Linh and Nuth Sophal lost their semifinals in Greco-Roman wrestling. Thailand’s Phongsatorn Moonme got the better of Chab Linh in the 50kg class while Indonesia’s Muhammad Aliyansya stopped Nuth Sophol in the 60kg category.

The Cambodian table tennis pairing of Nay Saravey and Tang Hav crashed out of the men’s doubles second round, beaten 11-1, 11-5, 11-9 by the Indonesian duo Santoso Fikcy Supi and Agus Fredi Pramono.

The Kingdom’s spikers were also at the receiving end in indoor volleyball, going down without a whimper in straight sets to Myanmar. With two losses in the group, Cambodia has been bundled out of the event.

Cambodia’s medal tally at time of print stood at two golds, seven silvers and nine bronzes, safely ahead of Myanmar, Brunei and East Timor, who have all yet to win a gold.

Hosts Indonesia sit proudly on top of the charts with 71 golds, 58 silvers and 53 bronzes. Thailand are second and Vietnam third.

Ly Boramy grabs another gold

Cambodia's Ly Boramy has doubled up on golds at the 26th SEA Games.

Cambodia’s mixed multi-weapon team secured a gold medal, the Kingdom’s third overall and second in vovinam as the trio of Pal Chhorraksmy, Prak Vanny and Ly Boramy produced a stunning performance at the 26th SEA Games in Indonesia yesterday.

The Vietnamese martial art of Vovinam, which Cambodia has embraced with great success, continued to bring more good tidings as the men’s double weapons team of Chin Piseth and Chrin Bunlong landed a silver medal. The mixed pair of Ly Boramy and Pal Chhorraksmy were distinctly unlucky in their event going down narrowly in the final to settle for a silver.

On a day which saw Vy Srey Khouch (women’s 55kg) and Mao Monith (women’s 50kg) add a bronze medal each to the tally, Cambodia’s take from the vovinam competition held at the Sunter Sport Centre in Jakarta read an impressive two golds, seven silvers and three bronze medals.

On the wrestling front, Chum Chivinn went down to Vietnam’s Nguyen Van Doc to end up with a bronze medal in the men’s 120kg Greco Roman class. This was the third bronze medal for Cambodia’s matmen at the Gedung Serbaguna Jakabaring hall in Palembang.

Across town, French-born Andrea Ka came up with a winning start to her women’s tennis singles campaign scoring a fluent 6-2, 6-4 victory over Marian Jade Capadocia of the Philippines yesterday.

After this hugely popular victory, Andrea Ka partnered Bun Kenny in the mixed doubles with the pair pulling off a 7-5, 6-3 win over the Vietnamese combination of Tran Lam Anh and Ho Huynh Dan Mach.

Only briefly in the second set of her singles did the 19-year-old Andrea feel the heat of the contest. But once she steadied herself it was plain sailing for the right hander, who is resuming competitive tennis after a self imposed break of well over a year.

Ka, whose Cambodian parents migrated to France in the mid 1970s, joined the Tennis Federation of Cambodia in the first week of September and has since been training under national coach Braen Aneiros.

“It is good to start on a winning note. She did most of the things right on the court and we hope she keeps going,” said coach Aneiros.

TFC General Secretary Tep Rithivit hailed the turnaround in the Kingdom’s tennis contingency.

“A few months ago we could think of no-one representing Cambodia in the women’s singles, but here we have Andrea Ka who has raised our expectations with the way she handled her singles and partnered Bun Kenny in the mixed doubles. We are one round away from these medals. It is a great feeling,” he said.

Cambodia’s top ranked men’s player Bun Kenny, who was forced out of the court by a sudden attack of body cramps during the team event semifinals against Indonesia's No 1 Christopher Rungkat two days ago, pulled out of the men’s doubles to concentrate on the singles and mixed doubles. Interestingly, Bun Kenny meets Rungkat in the first round today.

Meanwhile, Cambodia’s men’s doubles interest was quickly wiped out when Long Samneang and Orn Sambath lost 6-3, 7-5 to the Laotian pair of Keo Dalasouk and Lasavady Vitata.

At Palembang’s Jakabaring Sport Complex, the last traces of Cambodian interest on the track disappeared with both Kieng Samorn and Takizaki Kuniaki finishing a tame fifth in their respective events.

Kieng Samorn clocked 1:53.17 in the men’s 800m final, which was won by Vietnam’s Duong Van Thai in a time of 1:49.42. Mervin M Guarte of the Philippines finished second ahead of Indonesia’s Abdul Hais.

The Cambodian entry in the men’s marathon Takizaki Kuniaki, whose selection to the national team was overshadowed by the omission of ‘the Kingdom’s best known long distance runner Hem Bunting, could only manage a fifth place finish in a time of 2:37.39.

Taken in conjunction with Hem Bunting’s year best time of 2:31.58 at the Perth City to Surf marathon, the Japanese runner's timing was a lot slower, although had Hem Bunting reproduced his effort in Australia at yesterday’s race, he also would have missed out on the medals.

The winner of the event, Yahuza of Indonesia, timed 2:27.45 to grab the gold ahead of Eric Panique of the Philippines at 2:28.26 and compatriot Eduardo Buenavis third in 2:29.09.

At time of print, Cambodia were holding firm on their grip of eighth place in the medals table, ahead of Myanmar, who had just grabbed their first gold. Hosts Indonesia still command the lead with a glittering total of 222 medals, 87 of them gold.

ISKA Kun Khmer middleweight world champion Vorn Viva, real name Chhoun Sok Leng, came away with a bronze at the SEA Games yesterday.

Cambodia’s medal hunt netted just one silver from judo yesterday, while petanque, wrestling and boxing combined saw three bronze finishes for the Kingdom as the 26th SEA Games entered its second week in Indonesia.

The high point of the day for Cambodia came at the Kelapa Gading Judo Center in Jakarta as Khom Ratanakmony, fighting for men’s 50-55 kg gold, lost a valiant battle against home favourite Toni Iravan of Indonesia.

On his climb up to the final, the Cambodian judoka scored two crucial wins. He shut out Supanat Prasetsri of Thailand in the quarterfinals and Kap Cin Pau of Myanmar in the semis to set up that final showdown with the Indonesian.

The judo medal count could well be boosted today when four Cambodian fighters figure in quarterfinal bouts. Sngoun David (66-73 kg), Kim Saron (60-66 kg) and Chim Keo (55-60 kg) figure in the men’s section while last year’s Singapore Youth Olympics bronze medallist Sam Sothea will be fighting for a place in the women’s 45-48kg class.

The boxing ring of Palembang’s University of Sriwijaya threw up three bronze medals for Cambodia yesterday even as a few hopefuls came a cropper. Phal Sophat, Phal Sophorn and Hin Say Hong made quarterfinal exits but relief for the squad came through Chhuon Sok Leng, Huot Samath and Svay Ratha, who landed a bronze each after losing their semifinals.

Much was expected from Chhoun Sok Leng, more popularly known as Vorn Viva, but the ISKA Kun Khmer Middleweight World Champion – who retained his title against Ben Barwise in July – found the going increasingly tough against Alex Tatontos of Indonesia.

In the light heavyweight category, Vietnam’s Luong Van Toan outboxed Huot Sam Ath while Svay Ratha lost his light welterweight fight to Afdan Bachtila of Indonesia.

Over at the Jakabaring Sport Complex, Cambodia salvaged another bronze from the petanque courts when Ke Leng finished third in the women’s shooting.

Cambodia’s tennis challenge in the singles events came to a disappointing end with the country’s top-ranked player, Bun Kenny, fighting every inch of the way before going down 6-4, 7-6 in the pre-quarterfinals to Indonesian No 1 Christopher Rungkat, Kenny’s touring pal.

Earlier in the day, Cambodia’s Long Samneang was outclassed in the men’s singles by one of the top contenders from the Philippines, Jeson Patrombon, 6-0, 6-1.

The Kingdom’s women’s singles aspirations also vanished when Andrea Ka was beaten 6-3, 6-3 by Thailand’s Nicha Lertpitaksin.

The Kenny-Rungkat clash was easily the best of the round and both took turns to dominate the other in two close sets of quality and sharp exchanges.

“It was indeed a pity that one of them had to lose, and it is all the more disheartening because in the end it was to be Bun Kenny,” said Tennis Federation of Cambodia Secretary General Tep Rithivit yesterday.

“Kenny had his chances in both the sets. He just couldn’t cash in on some crucial points, especially in that tight second set,” added national team coach Braen Aneiros.

Meanwhile, Cambodian golfers Patrick Tom and Sang Vanseiha were way off the pace at the end of the fourth round.

Patrick Tom could hardly sustain his first-round effort of 73, and drifted alarmingly to an overall 320 to be placed 25th on the leader board.

The fairways at the Jagorawi Country Club were not so friendly to Seng Vanseiha, either. The 19-year-old ended up with a 72-hole total of 337 with his worst of 89 coming in the second round. He was placed 29th overall.

Cambodia’s basketballers suffered their third straight defeat, going down 78-57 to Vietnam to end up winless in the four-team group A.

Cambodia now face the ignominy of playing in the seventh-place playoff against Myanmar.

After bagging archery and rowing golds yesterday, Myanmar managed to sneak ahead of Cambodia in the medals table.

Indonesia expectedly reached a century of gold medals and stayed comfortably ahead of Vietnam, who had climbed over Thailand.

East Timor remained at the bottom of the table, with just one bronze from taekwondo to their credit.

Cambodia’s Sovann Kiri (right) won gold in kempo at the 26th SEA Games in Indoensia yesterday.

Cambodia’s Sovan Kiri lived up to his name in the Shorinji Kempo arena yesterday by winning the men’s 65kg randori (free sparring) gold at the 26th SEA Games in Jakarta to boost the bullion haul to four, the best the Kingdom has seen in the last 16 years and surpassing the three recorded at the 2009 Laos edition. The highest gold-medal tally of 17 goes a long way back to 1973, but after nearly three decades of political turmoil, civil war and genocide in the intervening years, Cambodia came out of SEA Games isolation in 1995.

It was a gold-letter day for Sovan Kiri, whose name roughly translates to Golden Mountain, as he scripted a new high in a sport that is gaining popularity in the Kingdom.

He ended his blazing trail with a merited victory over Khonesavanh Sounda, of Laos, in the final.

On the way up, Sovan Kiri easily dealt with Indonesia’s Nyoman Sudarmawan in the semifinals.

In another of the less glamorous martial-arts forms yesterday, Veng Vireak grabbed a bronze medal in the Wushu men’s 60kg sanshou category after losing his semifinal clash with Hoxay Aphaylath of Laos.

Cambodia had scooped seven Shorinji Kempo medals – one silver and six bronze – at the Ciracas Sport Hall earlier during the weekend.

A grand display of power and precision saw 25-year-old Sovan Rachana scythe through the early opposition, but in a tight and well contested 57kg randori female final, she came up against a solid performance from Indonesia’s Ligar Nur Lailah.

The host nation’s kenshi picked up the coveted gold and pushed the Cambodian girl to the silver medal position.

Sovan Rachana came close to another big success in the mixed kumi embu (artistic) pair kyu kensri, but she and her partner Kong Savorn could only manage a bronze medal in the end after raising hopes of a better finish.

For his part, Kong Savorn also came out of the men’s 55kg randori event with a bronze. Other Cambodian randori bronze medal winners included Sovan Ratanak (women’s 45kg), Branom Channary (women’s 48kg), Phat Saren (men’s 50kg) and Un Sovannara (men’s 70kg).

Meanwhile, in the co-hosting city of Palembang, the Kingdom’s last standing wrestler, Chea Chong, went out in the quarterfinals to Vietnam’s Nguyen The Anh.

Cambodian tennis had to rest content with just a men’s team bronze medal as the mixed doubles pair of Bun Kenny and Andrea Ka Daravy were shown the door by the Indonesian pair of Grace Sari Ysidora and Aditya Harry Sason 6-3, 6-3 in Friday’s quarterfinals. Earlier, both Bun Kenny and Andrea Ka had gone out of their singles quarterfinal matches.

Disappointment also lay in store for the Kingdom’s oarsmen when they lined up in the men’s 20+1+1 Traditional Boat race over 1,000 metres.

After being completely outpaced, the Cambodian boat finished last of five teams with a timing of 4:06.30. Myanmar won the gold, with Indonesia grabbing silver and the Philippines bronze.

Myanmar went on to grab an incredible sweep of six golds from events at the Cipule Regatta Course on Lake Sunter, in West Java, with the Philippines forcing their only silver in the men’s 20+1+1 500m class.

The remaining two races – men’s and women’s 20+1+1 2,000m – will round off the boating competition today.

On the basketball court of Jakarta’s Britama Arena, Cambodia claimed seventh place by winning their only game of the tournament against Myanmar on Friday.

SEA Games athletes bring home medals

Tuesday, 22 November 2011

Cambodia’s dragon boat racers found themselves at the deep end as the two men’s teams graced the rear of the five-boat races on the penultimate day of the 26th SEA Games yesterday. As Myanmar’s total dominance of the Cipule Regatta course in East Karawang continued, Cambodia’s dismal show was manifest in both the men’s 10+1+1 event over 1,000 metres and the 20+1+1 race over 1,200 metres.

At Ranau Hall of the Jakabaring Sports Centre in Palembang, the Kingdom’s gymnasts were put to a stern test as the trio of Sor Sopheng Sum Srorn and Veas Sarith came up well short in a field of just four teams.

Going into the routines section in last place, Cambodia could only muster a combined score of 18.725, well below the three medallists above them. Vietnam picked up gold with 20.792, ahead of Thailand (20.584) and Indonesia (19.324).

With most of the teams trudging back home after an 11-day stint, Cambodia has only a token presence in the grand closing ceremony planned for today.

But the Kingdom’s sporting circles are already hailing this year’s Games as a trend setting success. Since its SEA Games revival in the early 1990s, Cambodia’s best medals haul of three golds, 10 silver and 27 bronze medals was recorded in the 2009 edition in Vientiane.

Cambodia has now increased that gold count to four and added an extra silver, although the delegation came back a medal less overall on 39.

Led by Ly Boramy’s double gold strike, the nation’s performance in vovinam surpassed all expectations throwing up the highest number of 12 medals even as Cambodia’s traditional strengths, wrestling and boxing, failed to measure up to pre-Games estimates. While the Cambodian grapplers returned with five bronze medals, the boxers could only pluck three from the ring.

Shorinji Kempo is another not so glitzy martial arts form to boost the country’s pride. Belying predictions, kempo accounted for eight medals including a gold and a silver.

The talented Sovan Kiri is already a household name following his gold winning performance and the kempo camp is confident that the good result is a definite shot in the arm for this Japanese discipline in the Kingdom.

Cambodia continued to reap rich rewards from the petanque court with Or Chan Daren and Yim Sophorn turning in a golden efforts. In total, petanque provided four medals though form pundits had predicted a few more for the team.

Taekwondo was a notable disappointment for Cambodia. On the strength of the team’s excellent showing in the ASEAN Championships earlier this year, a gold medal or two seemed in order.

However, Sorn Davin had to settle for the team’s only silver after a gutsy fight in her final. There were just three more bronze medals as many of the favoured fighters went out in the quarterfinal stages.

The medal returns from Judo were also not as good as the country had hoped – just one silver coming off the mat for the Kingdom’s judokas.

Cambodian tennis missed out on individual bronze which Tan Nysan had managed to achieve in back-to-back SEA Games since 2007. Both Bun Kenny and Andrea Ka were quarterfinal casualties.

The Kingdom’s pride, however, was restored when Bun Kenny and Orn Sambath ensured a bronze medal in the men’s team competition. This is Cambodia’s first tennis team medal in nearly 15 years.

Cambodia went without a medal in 11 of the 20 disciplines but a marginal rise in the nation’s gold and silver standards will perhaps keep the mood buoyant back home.

Yesterday’s dramatic conclusion of the men’s football tournament saw the host's dream run to the final suffer the cruelest of endings when reigning champions Malaysia edged them 5-4 after penalties.

With the game finishing locked at 1-1 after first half goals for each side, a goalless extra time took it to the dreaded spotkicks. Indonesia gave their home fans the first fright when their second strike bounced out off the inside of the post, but Malaysia had their third kick saved to level off the tallies.

A final penalty save by their keeper Khairul Fahmi Che Mat set up the winning goal, which agonisingly crept through the fingers of Indonesia's Kurnia Mega Herman.

With the victory, Malaysia retained their title and claimed their fifth winner's trophy, as Indonesia failed to repeat their home success of 1987.

Earlier at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta, Myanmar thumped 2009 runners up Vietnam 4-1 to capture the bronze.

It was first occasion that all 11 ASEAN nations had competed in the same competition.

As the curtain comes down on the 26th SEA Games, the torch will pass on to Myanmar for the 27th edition in 2013.

Two killed in stand crush at soccer final of SEA Games

Dan Riley
Wednesday, 23 November 2011

Tragedy marred the aftermath of the 26th SEA Games men’s football final in Jakarta on Monday night, as it emerged that two home fans were killed by a crush in the stands.

The match, played on the eve of the one-year anniversary of the Diamond Island stampede in Phnom Penh, saw Indonesia lose 5-4 to reigning champions Malaysia via a penalty shootout.

Tickets had been overwhelmingly oversubscribed, and a ticketing booth was set on fire by outraged supporters after officials claimed they had sold out by lunchtime.

According to reports, 80,000 tickets were issued, but many more fans had managed to cram into the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium.

Prime Minister Hun Sen reaffirmed yesterday morning that Cambodia would not host a SEA Games before 2020 due to the need for further development in infrastructure such as roads, bridges, schools, hospitals and irrigation systems.

“I’ve already told the Indonesian president that Cambodia will not apply for hosting the SEA Games until at least 2020 due to limited budget,” the Prime Minister said during his speech at the 16th Government-Private Sector Forum, held at the Peace Palace.

Hun Sen went on to hail the good performances of Cambodian athletes at the 26th SEA Games, which concluded in Indonesia on Tuesday.

According to the official SEA Games website, Cambodia collected a total of 39 medals – four golds, 11 silvers and 24 bronzes.

However, an administrative error has seen wrestler Kang Denpiseth awarded a bronze in the 55-60kg competition. The Cambodian lost two of his three league round bouts and returned home without a medal.

As expected, the host nation topped the medals table with an impressive 182 golds. The tally saw their record of finishing with most golds at a SEA Games extended to 10 times, one behind the all-time leaders, Thailand.

Only three times previously had a nation won more SEA Games golds, interestingly each time as the hosts and spaced evenly over three decades. Indonesia won 183 golds in 1987, then took a record 194 in 1997, while Thailand notched 183 in 2007.

Thailand’s 109 golds from this year’s mega event was the highest total for a second-ranked nation, as was Vietnam’s 96 golds as the third-best delegation.

The new Mynamar capital of Naypyidaw will host the next edition of the region’s premier sporting event in 2013, while Singapore will be home to the 2015 SEA Games.

In conjunction with the 26th SEA Games runs the sixth ASEAN Para-Games, which get under way on Dec-ember 12 in Surakarta, Central Java.

A CANCER-stricken Singaporean grandmother who postponed chemotherapy to compete in the 26th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games for the first time took an emotional gold at the weekend, according to a report yesterday.

Tan Yoke Lan (pic), 63, underwent a mastectomy after being diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer and travelled to Indonesia against medical advice, Singapore's Straits Times reported.

She also deferred chemotherapy to kill the remaining cancerous cells in her body until after the Games, where on Sunday she earned a gold medal in the women's pairs of bridge with partner Seet Choon Cheng.

"Just a few weeks ago, I was unsure whether I would be able to make it here," Tan, who has six grandchildren, was quoted as saying. "But I came because I didn't want to let my partner and my teammates down."

The pair won Singapore's first gold in the event, shedding tears and hugging each other at the Jayakarta Hotel in Palembang who is co-hosting the Games with Jakarta.

Tan overcame dizzy spells and had to take frequent rest between rounds of the game which can last for up to 10 hours a day on her way to gold.

She faces chemotherapy on her return to Singapore but said her love of bridge compelled her to delay treatment.
