View Full Version : Building Interiors.
the golden vision August 4th, 2011, 11:02 PM Of the hundreds of images of some of the city's finest building archived on here, it's unfortunate that very few show the interior. It's true, that quite a few of them have been altered and hold little interest but a significant number retain their original sumptuous interiors.
Most of the city's central administration buildings are palatial inside, some commercial buildings also and as Keayman has illustrated the city's domestic buildings can be of great interest too.
Keayman August 5th, 2011, 01:33 PM I lived facing No.1 for almost 14 years and back in the 80s it was a solictors, Benn & Twyfords I think. Anyway, it holds a plaque describing it as Liverpool's finist surviving example of a Georgian Merchant House - built in 1790. I'm slightly surprised at this as I have seen other fine examples but I don't know which criteria they use.
Anyway, upon gaining entry I was delighted to find it still possessed many original features and had not been knocked into sterile plasterboarded flats, possibly because it's listed.
It was once owned by John Houghton, a distiller whose distillary stood adjacent to it, this building being the Bull Inn. Spirits were important goods in the trade with Africa though it's not known that any of Houghtons business was included in that as he put money into the nearby Christ Church which stood near the top of Hunter Street.

The last shot is looking across to my old address, the caretakers house to Blackburn Chambers at No.4 Trueman Street. I noticed they've boxed the fire escape stairs in that lead to the main roof.
the golden vision August 5th, 2011, 08:19 PM ^^The building is need of some restoration work, externally at least. I just hope when it happens they don't overdo it,especially inside, the Venetian Window looks untouched.
Great stuff.

the golden vision September 19th, 2011, 06:48 PM ^^Excellent ! and to put those town hall pictures in context, Pevsner himself raves about it and Sharples in his 'new guide' describes it as probably the grandest suite of civic rooms in the country, an outstanding example of late Georgian decoration. Superb stuff from both of you.
baias September 19th, 2011, 08:18 PM the municipal palace is magnificent, to say the least
regarding the Wellington Rooms, would like to know if that great building has already been recovered and reopened??
thank you
Martin S September 19th, 2011, 08:34 PM Magnificent photos of the Town Hall Mossy. I went on a tour of the building quite a few years ago with Steve Binns as the guide. Steve Binns is a local historian who, as far as I know, has been blind since birth. Quite amazing and sad to think that the person showing us around couldn't see the lovely building that he was describing.
aek-94 September 19th, 2011, 08:51 PM Great photos of the Town Hall, it's a very beautiful building :)
Pobbie September 19th, 2011, 11:16 PM I did the tour round St. George's Hall last Wednesday (free open day!). I'd visited the Great Hall once before (in 1999) and was impressed then, but this time round it seemed even grander:

Yet even this didn't prepare me for the sheer magnificence of the Concert Room, which was like being inside a huge lemon meringue:

aek-94 September 19th, 2011, 11:27 PM Nice pictures Pobbie! :)
Wow, what a nice building. I've never been inside St George's Hall before, I should venture inside one day.
