If they truly can get it to display like that, it would be truly awesome. Very different from the traditional approach of simply sticking a giant TV screen on the side of a building.

I would replace the word "News" with 新闻 though. Why have English words on a Chinese building for a Chinese business organization.

The building is very tall. Of course you're going to tilt your head a little in order to see it, but you'd do the same with the traditional approach of slapping a large TV screen on the side of the building.

This is an absolutely amazing building, incredible architecture and not less incredible engineering. I wish to see it real

Is there any info or photos about the construction? At Emporis it's listed as U/C.

As for the "News", they could make both Chinese and English versions.

Check out the Beijing Construction Thread! Ill guide you inn, information and a lot of photos here (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpost.php?p=2134236&postcount=84).

Concerning the construction progress. The building started construction last year, but is still in its early stage of construction. A image from december 2004 showed only some ground construction, nothing more. But i guess we'll see some progress later again. :)

CCTV Construction Starts in May

Beijing Portal 2005-02-23 09:20:23

Construction on the new China Central Television or CCTV building will formally start on May 8.

The new headquarters for China's national broadcaster will cost nearly 4.7 billion yuan, or 570 million USD.

The new building, located in Bejing's central business area CBD, by the east Third Ring Road, will cover a total of 20 hectares.

The main building will be over 230 meters high, 52 floors, and will use the latest building technology.

The project is expected to be completed at the beginning of 2009.

You've been helping to design this building?! Wow, cool. I have to congratulate you and the rest of the team on the design, I can't wait to see this one rise. I'll be visiting China sometime next summer, I intend to go to Beijing and when there I'll have to take a look at this one, obviously won't be finished by then but should still look good.

Beijing’s CCTV building starts to take its rather unusual shape

Release date: 07/05/2003

Arup’s work on the design of the new headquarters for China Central Television (CCTV) in Beijing, China is continuing apace. The design team is setting out detailed solutions to the engineering challenges posed by the unique shape of the building, which will break all the rules in the Chinese design codes.

The headquarters building is one of two high-rise buildings forming the focal point of a 10-hectare site in the new Central Business District (CBD) in Beijing. The CCTV headquarters building, at a height of 230m and a floor area of about 400,000m2, combines space for administration, news, broadcasting, studios and program production – encompassing the entire process of TV making.

Arup, who is providing engineering design services for structures, building services and security for the new building, is sub-consultant to the Office for Metroplitan Architecture (OMA) led by Rem Koolhaas, which was awarded the design contract on 20 December 2002 following an international architectural design competition.

The biggest challenge for the Arup engineers is the unique structural form of the CCTV building. The building is formed by two leaning towers, which are bent 90º at the top and bottom to meet forming a continuous ‘tube’. An expressed diagrid system is adopted on the external faces of the building to provide a tube structure in resisting both gravity and lateral loads, where the pattern of diagonals reflects the distribution of forces in the tube surface.

Since the structural design will necessarily break the Chinese design codes, apart from the mandatory seismic requirements for Beijing buildings which need a resistance to intensity 8 with peak ground acceleration of 0.2g, the design will be subject to the review and approval by a Chinese Experts Review Panel to which Arup will present a performance based design approach.

The project is being executed by a combined Arup team from East Asia and Europe Divisions - the China team being led by Michael Kwok, Craig Gibbons, Alexis Lee, Goman Ho and Kenneth Sin and the London team by Cecil Balmond, Rory McGowan, Chris Carroll, Alistair Guthrie and Iain Lyall. The ARUP and OMA Design Teams are mainly based in Europe in the initial design stages and will move to Beijing in the latter stages.

The project, the estimated construction cost of which is an estimated US$600m, is scheduled be completed in time for the Beijing Olympics in 2008. The CCTV headquarters building is one of a number of Beijing 2008 projects with which Arup is currently involved, including the design of the flagship Olympic stadium by ArupSport with Herzog & de Meuron Architekten and the China Architecture Design & Research Group.

The new CCTV building has been full of controversy since its design released. The main problem is its super high cost. The construction date ha been postponed many time so it won't be done before 2008 Beijing Olympic games.

TVCC?

TVCC is the second building in the project, CCTV and TVCC will be nabours, each with crazy designes. TVCC is short for Television Cultural Centre, and the building is 159m/ 31 floors tall. It will be completed in 2008, same time as CCTV is completed. The building will be a cultural center and a hotel.

You can see TVCC behind CCTV.

Hi,

I'm not sure if anyone here can help me, but I wondering where the best thread to ask about the CCTV building would be? I'm trying to find a plan and section of the building - even a very simple one. Does anyone know if there's one anywhere on Skyscrapercity, which thread would be the best place, or if there's a magazine that has featured these drawings?

Any help would be hugely appreciated!
