A single graffiti tag stretching more than 300 feet around a store has community leaders, the store’s owners, residents, and police officers from the 45th Precinct searching for the culprit or culprits following last Saturday’s defacing of a one-year-old supermarket located at Bruckner Boulevard and Crosby Avenue.

Drawn in black spray paint, the scawling begins with two names: Big Jake and Psycho, followed by a tremendously long "Cheeeeeeez." It is believed that the marking was left very late on Saturday night or in the early morning hours on Sunday, perhaps even by two vandals, as indicated by the pair of names. The 45th Precinct has been working overtime to put an end to this reign of damage.

"The investigation is actively underway," 45th Precinct commander Deputy Inspector James Capaldo said. "There are a number of suspects that are being looked at, and there is physical evidence of value recovered at the scene.

"There are a number of locations in the neighborhood that have been attacked by this individual, and once he is apprehended, we will endeavor to charge him with as many of these crimes as we can," the precinct commander said.

Capaldo said that the suspect or suspects were also involved with similar vandalism to the Bruckner Expressway underpass and P.S. 14.

The vandal or vandals have also struck along all major highways stretching from the Bronx into lower Westchester County.

One of the owners of the graffitied store, Freshway Marketplace, said that the damage probably took at least an hour and a half to complete.

"This is an outrage," said Harry Celentano, an owner of the store. "This is also an outrage for our customers and the community. It’s a battle to try to prevent vandalism, but it’s something that you have to keep doing until it goes away. We built a nice store for the people here, and we intend to keep it that way, no matter what."

Celentano said he couldn’t understand how apparently no one saw the vandals committing the crimes or if they did, failed to report the vandalism to police.

"Nobody saw them doing it?" said a clearly frustrated Celentano. "You’re trying to tell me that there is all this traffic on the highway and on these busy streets, and no one saw anything?

"I don’t understand why someone would do this," Celentano added. "He, she or they must be sick. It’s disgusting."

On Monday, October 5, Celentano and Assemblyman Jerffrey Klein gathered in front of the defaced location along with a cleaning and maintenance crew from the Titan Company to begin the removal of the graffiti from the store. Klein is spearheading an effort to stop vandalism in the community, and provided the crew for the cleanup. The estimated cost of the removal at Freshway alone is $2,000.

"My experience is that vandals get tired of this after a while, especially when we remove the graffiti right away," Klein said. "We’ve been very successful in the past in cleaning up the graffiti. The trick is bringing it down immediately. We are certainly making a serious effort to stop vandalism."

Klein was equally outraged by the situation. "This is the worst desecration of private property that I have seen in my years in government," he said. "A very disturbed person must have done this. When someone constructs a beautiful building like this, housing a quality store, they are making an investment in the borough and they shouldn’t have to put up with someone destroying their property."

Community Board 10 district manager James Vacca expressed similar feelings on the situation, and said that the community needs to be more aware in the future.

"Nobody saw this occurring?," he said. "As you drive in this neighborhood, you have to make a conscious effort to look around, and if we see something suspicious, we need to call 911. In this day and age, most of us carry cell phones. Make the call.

"Everybody complains that graffiti is on the increase in the neighborhood, but what are we going to do about it?" Vacca added.

Capaldo urged anyone with information regarding the graffiti or the identity of those responsible to contact the 45th Precinct Detective Squad at (718) 822-5415. The precinct commander said anyone who sees an act of vandalism in progress, like any other crime, should immediately call 911.

simply put..there's good graffiti, and there's bad graffiti...this is bad.

oh yea....if you look at the pic you'll see one dude holding a pressure washer (wand) similar to the one you wash your car with, just a diff fitting...while a smaller tip reduces the amount of water coming out, it also causes a massive pressure change...a #0 (size) fitting can cut a man in half....
