Bacolod's Capitol looks very grand and the building's facade and the grounds surrounding it looks very well-maintained. Good governance at work, IMO. :okay:

Bacolod's Capitol looks very grand and the building's facade and the grounds surrounding it looks very well-maintained. Good governance at work, IMO. :okay:

credit that to the late gov. marañon. he's instrumental in not only transferring back the governor's office and other offices under it but at the same time restored it back to its grandiose form. it used to house the negros museum while the provincial offices including the governor's office was housed at the provincial administration building situated right across it.

Good to hear that! Although I understand it was quite controversial since it was built within the Arroceros. SM, should have built a neoclassical or chose a design similar to this one.

The best parin ang puting paint. Gaya ng Kalayaan Hall sa Malacanang, iba ang dating. Sana lahat ng mga lumang kapitolyo at government buildings, puti lang ang allow na gamiting pintura.

yaps, white paint is still the best IMO...:)

white is a nice color for neoclassical buildings...

sana lahat na lang ng neoclassical buildings sa Pilipinas, kahit hindi government buildings, ay kulay white... para magandang tingnan...

Leyte Capitol

Once the seat of the Philippine Commonwealth Government on 1944 under President Sergio Osmeña, Sr. Construction of the Capitol started in 1917 during the administration of Governor Salvador K. Demetrio, completed and inaugurated in 1924 during the administration of Governor Honorio Lopez. The original edifice was renovated, expanded and beautified 40 years after upon assumption to office of Governor Norberto B. Romualdez, Jr. in 1964.

Historic viewing of two murals depicting the MacArthur Landing was unveiled on October 20, 1964 by President Diosdado Macapagal while the First Mass was unveiled on March 31, 1965 by Ambassador Fernando Lobao de Carvalho of Portugal and the Marquis de Aumon representing the Government of Spain.

i wish they spent the money on original filipino building designs than exacting something that already exist somewhere else in the world. im not sure if that was the main intention of the planners to mimic world reknown designs.

The question though: What is an original "Filipino" building design? Because if we could look closer with the "Bahay na Bato" style, it's a hybrid of indigenous "bahay kubo" and "European."

So what's an "original Filipino building design?" The term "Filipino" is even from foreign origin. :colgate:

I definitely agree. ^^

As I have seen only some of those provinces in Mindanao and in Nor.Luzon have unique architectural designs (e.g. Batanes, Cordillera, ARMM). Filipino architecture in general is the "bahay kubo" or maybe "tree house" or a cave.

The style is called Neoclassical or new classical and is found all over the world. I disagree that the Bacolod Government Center was a copy of the White House because that itself was inspired by classicism or the civilizations of Greece and Rome. These civilizations brought us many ideas about government, nationhood and the law. I personally believe the style befits government buildings as it conveys the ideas of stability, order, and permanence.

Neoclassical, or "new" classical, architecture describes buildings that are inspired by the classical architecture of ancient Greece and Rome. A Neoclassical building is likely to have some (but not necessarily all) of these features:

Symmetrical shape
Tall columns that rise the full height of the building
Triangular pediment
Domed roof

During the 1500s, the famous Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio awakened an interest in the architecture of ancient Greece and Rome. Palladio's ideas became the model for architecture in Europe for many centuries. In the late 1700s and early 1800s, the newly-formed United States drew upon classical ideals to construct grand government buildings as well as smaller private homes.

The word Neoclassical is often used to describe an architectural style, but Neoclassicism is not actually any one distinct style. Neoclassicism is a trend, or approach to design, that can describe several very different styles.

What is a genuine "Filipino" style of architecture that some are proposing of?

I think this would qualify as Filipino architecture. The lower half is enhanced with stone similar to bahay na bato. and the roof design is very asian/balinese. Asian/balinese design is similar to Mindanaoan.

Which reminds me of the Marcos days when almost all of the airports have the same theme.

Mindanaoan theme seems to be more appropriate. Perhaps like the Maranao torogan and the dominance of okir.

But we cannot deny that we Filipinos have integrated influence from other cultures as well. I heard from several of my foreigner friends that the Philippines is very "westernised." I dunno about their opinion/perspective though but it somehow seems to be right.

A product of 400 years of being colonised by western powers is sure one big thing in making the current Philippine history and society.

In the end, I really couldn't blame whether a capitol or a city hall/town hall has imitated western architecture and some other famed landmarks, because if we look at the past, we have been doing this so.

Also, let the architects' imagination go free. There are a lot of cities there right now that needs a new government center too. So I guess it's not too late. But for now, we cannot please all people, in the end it'll still serve it's purpose: as an office of the state and local management for the people.

I absolutely disagree to the term "copied". Neoclassical is a style that has influenced architecture worldwide.

Here are some government buildings from our neighbors with Western influences:

well, that's 300 years of convent and 50 years of hollywood, what would you expect our answers be?

basing from the pics above, i don't think these great buildings of our asian neighbors don't make them less in grandeur and sophistication than their european counterparts. what's important i guess is the role that these buildings played in their nation's history that made them national treasures. and that's what the bacolod NGC is also trying to achieve as catalyst for our city's advance to progress.:) so for me, its not an issue and never will be an issue.

A bahay kubo city hall would not withstand greater than 120 kph winds of 20 typhoons a year in the Philippines. Maybe an Ivatan architecture of Batanes would do :lol::lol:

Come to think of this amigo...

333 years under the Kingdom of Spain
47 years under the Commonwealth of the United States of America

the buildings of these influences are visible in Escolta, Intramuros, Sta Cruz, Quiapo, Sampaloc, Malate and Ermita. Doesn't the Bacolod City Gov't Center fit-in with them? Romanesque-Neo Classical-Modern, etc etc etc are all showcased in and out of the Bacolod Government Center. It spans time and colonial influence so it doesn't skew from the "Filipino-architecture". Genuine Filipino signature is an evolution of a mixture of colonial influence. ^^
