I so wish they would let bands do concerts over here. I know European countries allow it in their castles.

tanzirian September 17th, 2009, 11:44 PM ^^ Thanks for the pic Pakia :) The name of the park however is "Chondrima Uddyan." The closest to "Pulton Park" that I can think of, is the former Paltan Maidan in the greater Motijheel area (another part of town), now the site of two stadiums.

tanzirian September 22nd, 2009, 11:55 PM A colonial era house with striking resemblance to the old DU buildings like Curzon Hall...I wonder if they are by the same architect? Nice pic Tan
manbil777 September 26th, 2009, 05:43 AM I think all the houses in wari (well most of 'em) look like Curzon Hall because at that time the most fashionable building style (Raj/Mughal design vernacular) looked something like this and applied to buildings large or small. The small umbrella thingies (Chhatris) were very popular. I bet the original designer meant to have green edgings/manicured garden and crushed 'Khoa'/stone walkway leading up to the entrance but people who bought the house eventually lost the sense of beauty ('shoukhin' attitude) and started tying up livestock in front of it...or as we see here, drying spices or pulses on the driveway.
The original vision will all come back if they just try a bit...

Pakia October 1st, 2009, 12:33 AM Why you guys don't have a similar thread on other cities of Bangladesh like Chittagong? I've heard that its really worth visiting.

Check out this Cityscapes and Landmarks thread, which is the second in this series:
http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=821488
Chittagong has a single thread for Cityscapes and Landmarks both because there are, at present, both fewer points of interest, and far fewer photos to be found on the net, relative to Dhaka. That will likely change in coming years as the port city grows and internet access expands.
There is also a projects thread:
http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=489912
Relatively speaking, at this early stage of development, Chittagong city isn't worth visiting just for itself, but rather is the gateway for natural attractions of southeast Bangladesh.

The opening ceremony will be at Bangabandhu stadium at Mothijheel. The actual matches will be played at Mirpur and Chittagong Divisional stadium.
tanzirian October 26th, 2009, 03:36 AM ^^ Thanks, good to know. I didn't know that there was a separate opening ceremony. In World Cup Football (Soccer) for example, the opening ceremony precedes the opening match and is at the same venue.

Yeah it's different for cricket since the ODI matches are 8 hours long, so combining the opening cermony with a match will result in a very loong day!
If we have the nearby highrises completed by 2011 and decorated, the view is gonna be stunning :)

I hope City Center is complete by then. But, given the pace of work since things came to a near standstill at the end of 2006, I'm certainly not putting my money on it.
More importantly, I hope that Janata Bank gets a repaint and that Bangladesh Bank gets a thorough cleaning. These two were such nice looking buildings when they were new. But I guess whoever is in charge of them forgot that they would need any exterior maintenance.

Yup, as far as I recall, it was installed a few years ago after deciding to stop having cricket matches there. Someone correct me if I'm wrong on that.

tanzirian February 10th, 2010, 03:55 AM Barnali recently posted some pics of the house below, which was built by one of my great-grandfathers in Old Dhaka. I lived here as a child. A few years ago I posted some pics that I took in 1998. The house was sold off by the family a few years ago...the building and the neighborhood has been in decline for a good while now. Good to see some developer has not torn down the place. If I won the Powerball lottery I would buy and restore the place, but sadly that has not transpired yet...

Rose Garden has thankfully always been in reasonably good shape, and it's also nice that the owners don't mind the public coming and walking around the grounds. If the gardens were tended to and the pavilion subjected to some basic restoration, the compound could easily become a desriable venue for functions or get-togethers.

How come they didn't paint the cube?
tanzirian June 2nd, 2010, 05:07 PM How come they didn't paint the cube?
In a previous pic I had seen of Baitul Mukarram it looked like the cube had been painted. So I am not sure if 1) this is an older pic and the cube has since been painted (although it was uploaded only a day or two ago) 2) I was mistaken in my earlier assumption or 3) it was painted and has since gone back to its old state (perhaps due to monsoon?). I really hope it gets spruced up, now that the new gate and minaret look so nice.
The link below will show you the pics I posted in February, where the cube looks nice and painted:

Rose Garden is the name of the building. It is located in Narinda, on Hrishikesh Das Lane, if I remember correctly. I wrote about its history in post 137 of my Historic Dhaka thread a while back. If it interests you, the link is:

I hope there's an elevator (lift) to reach the top of the minaret. Or is it just a facade?
samaruf June 23rd, 2010, 10:42 PM I don't know why market just under national mosque ? It is very unfortunate. Why GOV can't free the area for Musolli only.
I think there's a market around the mosque because the rents pay for the upkeep of the mosque. I don't know if GoB pays the salaries of the Imams and Muezzins or any funds for repair work. This is why you have donation box passed around after Juma prayers.
samaruf June 23rd, 2010, 10:47 PM I hope there's an elevator (lift) to reach the top of the minaret. Or is it just a facade?
Usually there's a spiral staircase in the minaret. My brothers and I would climb to the the top of our local mosque's minaret in Kuwait to get a vintage view of the surrounding area. It helped to have a Bangladeshi muezzin who knew us well, otherwise these were no go areas for little kids.

jason.kazi December 6th, 2010, 06:47 AM Construction of Independence Monument to begin soon
Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha . Dhaka
The construction work of the long-awaited main tower of Independence Monument at Suhrawardy Udyan in the Dhaka city is going to start soon.
Officials said an international tender process has already been completed and two proposals have been sent to the public procurement committee for the final approval.
The construction of the main tower will start very soon if the approval is given in the current week, they hoped.
Project director engineer Shahab Uddin said eight local and foreign companies took part in the international tender. Three of them were selected primarily and they were asked to submit financial proposals.
Two of the firms — a Bangladesh-China joint venture and a Bangladesh-US joint venture — have submitted their financial proposals and they have been sent to the public procurement committee for approval.
The last Awami League government took the initiative to construct the monument in commemoration of the inception of independence movement and victory in the War of Independence.
The last AL government took the project in 1997 and its formal implementation had begun in 1999.
Later, the BNP-Jamaat alliance government stopped the project in October 2001 and it remained so until December 2004. In the beginning of 2005, the work on the project resumed for some days, but was stopped again.
After the present AL government assumed office, it started implementing the project on a priority basis.
In the first phase, Shikha Anirban, an underground museum, an open stage, a plaza, a mural, a water site and pavements were made at a cost of Tk 64 crore.
In the second phase, construction of the main tower and other things would be completed at a cost of Tk 181.61 crore.
Officials said the project is expected to complete by June 2012 on 67 acres of land in the historic Suhrawardy Uddyan.
The main tower of the Independence Monument would be constructed with steel frames and transparent classes applying latest technology. It would be an extraordinary tower in the world.
Both the length and width of the tower would be 16 feet in commemoration of 16 December of 1971, the Victory Day. Its height would be 150 feet and there would be arrangements for illumination within the tower.

jason.kazi December 11th, 2010, 05:37 AM HC asks police to stop construction
in Lalbagh Fort site
Staff Correspondent
The High Court on Sunday asked the Lalbagh police officer-in-charge to stop within 24 hours building construction in the vicinity of the 332-year-old Lalbagh Fort in the capital.
The bench of Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury and Justice Sheikh Md Zakir Hossain also asked the police station chief to submit a report on the matter to the court in a week.
The court also asked the government to explain in three weeks why it would not be directed to enforce the Antiquities Act and the building construction rules for the conservation of the heritage site.
Secretaries to the cultural and home ministries, Dhaka mayor, Rajuk chairman, director general of the Directorate of Architecture, Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner, Lalbagh police officer-in-charge, and local residents M Shahid Hossain, Mohammad Haque and Loton have been asked to reply to the rule.
The court passed the order after hearing a public interest litigation writ petition filed by the Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh seeking a direction on the government to enforce the relevant laws and rules for the conservation of the site.
The organisation’s counsel Manzill Murshild told the court that owners of buildings bordering the fort were constructing buildings in the vicinity of the fort site flouting the Antiquities Act and the building construction rules, which restricts construction in heritage sites.
Manzill also called the court’s attention to newspaper reports that a number of building constructions in the heritage site was growing alarmingly in violation of relevant laws for which the beauty of the fort and its existence stand threatened.
Rights organisation Save the Environment at a recent human chain in front of the fort pointed out that according to records, the square-shaped fort had once spanned 18 acres of land and the area has now shrunk to 17.3525 acres.
Leaders of the organisation expressed their concerns about illegal settlement made inside the boundaries of the Fort and demanded immediate removal of the settlements which, they said, were constructed by razing some portions of the fort’s western boundary wall.
