I tell you....some of them has fantastic architecture. Oxford church has unique architecture. Its more roundish. Dhaka airport has lots of greenery. May even qualify for greenfield airport if correctly mantained. Curzon Hall has superb architecture....What is it?. Lal Bagh Fort Complex is quite Mughalish. I like it. Pink Palace is beautiful as well. I like that too. My favorite is the very 1st pic itself. Is that a Musical fountain?? Also liked the 1st roundabout. Very green & well maintained. keep it up!!

The most famous landmark in Dhaka is the Assembly complex. The new Bhasani Novo Theatre (planetarium) is also a spectacular landmark. Here's a few more.

Tmac i was wondering about Bangladeshs airport, I was quite impressed by your pics of Chittagongs airport, although the building itself looked quite old it was great to see that airbridges were in place which is a sure sign of a modern airport. Also the fact that a lot of big airlines like Thai were using it. Im just wondering about ZIA international, is it good aswell, from the picture you posted it looks small but as you say there has been an expansion ... can you post some pics of Bangladeshs 2 main airports, id be interested in seeing what they are like ... Thanks :)

ZIA international airport is the most modern and largest airport in Bangladesh. It is very busy as well. Here's a new picture of it and you can see it has been trippled in size. It is equipped with all the modern facilities. When I visited Dhaka in 2000, airbridges were already there in Dhaka ZIA airport. I heard they have flat screen LCDs all over the airport. It's hard to find pictures of the airports in Bangladesh. As I am sure all of you know noone there takes pictures of the airports. It is strange. You can compare the 2 pics and see how the airports has been expanded to triple it's size. ZIA international airport was named after the late president of Bangladesh Ziaur Rahman.

Zia’s mazar site now a beautiful spot for visitors

The majar complex of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman is being turned into one of the beautiful landscape in the capital for recreation safeguarding the sanctity of the cemetery.

Under the plan, the whole area is made magnificent by animating the adjacent Crescent Lake with light and fountains and development of adjacent panoramic views. It takes a different look when the mirrored and transparent floor of the hanging bridge on the lake radiates gentle radiance during nighttime.

Architects of the complex attached importance to some matters while they took up the plan for renovation of the majar complex.

The monumental complex is situated at the centre of the Udyan and on the same angle of the Sangsad Bhaban. The grave of Zia at the centre of a 36-feet diameter altar is completely built with white marble. Spacious areas made of marble have been kept for visitors around the grave.

The mausoleum complex houses a library and an archive, a seminar hall and a bridge over Crescent Lake. There are four entrances to the mausoleum. A steel-made and pyramid-size transparent canopy has been set up on the grave keeping similarity with a mazar. Outside the grave there have four sloppy green lawns abutting onto theroads for visitors. The whole area of the 37 feet high mazar is 14,000 cft.

The temporary hanging bridge has been set up for crossing the Crescent Lake. The bridge also having thick mirrored slabs has been set up on the structure made of RCC spans and steel- hangers. The total 188-feet long bridge has waterfalls on the both sides.

At night, bridge, lake, roads and adjacent areas will ablaze with lights come out through transparent deck of the bridge, which symbolise the prosperous future of the country.

The last end the garden has a two-storey structure constructed on the 24,000 cft area. A room for prayers is housed on the first floor while library, archive, museum and seminar hall are on the ground floor.

The majar complex will also have wide areas for the people to walk or sit around the complex apart from holding a function. It will be a unique recreational centre in the capital alongside showing homage to the great national leader. A must visit when you are in Dhaka.

First heritage park opens next week

Concord Heritage Park, the first in Bangladesh, at Ashulia in Savar will be opened in the second week of January.
Replicas of some important architectural structures have been installed in the park. A heritage museum has also been set up.
The park will entertain people and will educate them at the same time, the Concord Entertainment Company senior manager, Sarwar Anam Raju, told New Age on Monday. The company developed the park.
He said the park would uphold the history of Bangladesh in the park.
The replicas of eight architectural heritage — Jatiya Sangsad Complex, Chunakhola Mosque in Bagerhat, Ahsan Manzil, Kantajir Temple, Paharpur Monastery in Rajshahi, Savar Memorial, Shat Gambuj Mosque in Bagerhat and Putia Rajbari in Natore — have been installed in the park.
Sarwar said all the replicas had a signage of the brief history of the relevant architectural heritage.
All the masons visited the original sites before making the replicas, he said. There will also be a mini heritage museum with traditional and heritage resources of all kinds, including the indigenous people, he said.
He said a mini artisan village would be set up inside the park to project the tradition and life of rural Bangladesh.
A sports zone for children with the touch of village amusement will be featured in the park, he said.
The park will also feature traditional fairs on a smaller scale. There will be some rides for entertainment in the park, he said.
The rides will include family roller coaster, paddle cycle boats, local igloo theme, water fall, family train, mini pirate ship, family swing, battery cars, tea cup swing and dry slides.
The park will also have restaurants and food kiosks, shops, VIP lounge and a photo gallery.
The park has been set up on 1.75 acres of land just beside the Fantasy Kingdom theme park, Sarwar said.

Heritage in miniature

The sight of Kantajir Mandir may surprise you a little, but the beauty of the terracotta and luscious pink of the Ahsan Manzil will definitely mesmerise you.

At Concord Group's Heritage Park one will get a chance to see some of the well-known heritage sights of the country, of course in the form of replicas. The park, on 20 bighas, stands beside the group's famous Fantasy Kingdom at Ashulia.

"The thought of projecting our identity made us create this park," said SM Kamaluddin, Concord Group's chairman, at a Heritage Park press briefing yesterday.

http://www.thedailystar.net/2005/01/05/2005-01-05__city03.jpg
Entrance to the Concord Heritage Park and some of the replicas.

He said Bangladesh is portrayed in the international arena as a land of famines, tornadoes, floods and violence. "The image of our country has been tarnished but the rich history and our heritage has not been projected as yet," he said. He believed the replicas in the park would make people want to visit the real ones.

At present the park houses 11 replicas with four more awaiting installation. On entering the park visitors can see the Sat Gambuj Masjid, Ahsan Manzil, Paharpur Bouddha Bihar, Puthia Rajbari, Kantajir Mandir, Chunakhola Masjid, Jatiya Smriti Soudha, Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, Greek Smriti Soudha and Sita Kotbihar.

The chairman said installation of the other four replicas, which would also include World Heritage Site -- The Sundarbans could not be finished because of paucity of space. "A minimum of 100 acres of land is required to re-create such a park but buying land is a tough job for a private company like," he added.

The replicas are created in proportion to the real ones and around Tk 28 crore has been invested in the park so far and more investment will follow in the future, the chairman further said.

Apart from replica installations, the park has 10 different rides to entertain both children and adults, be it a family Roller Coaster or Mini Pirate ship, people would enjoy the excitement, the management believed. Paddle cycle boats, Igloo theme (mini flume), waterfall (him chori), family train, family swing, battery cars, teacup swing and dry slides are the others.

The entrance fee is Tk 60 -- a price within the reach of the common people -- but a separate fee would be charged for each ride.

State minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism Mir Mohammed Nasiruddin and Selima Rahman State Minister for Cultural Affairs will formally inaugurate the park on January 13.

Tmac:

Thanks for the pics. As usual, they are very nice. I have a request, in case you can help. I have been trying to find pics of the memorial to Indian soldiers who gave their lives fighting in the Bangladesh liberation war, but have not been successful so far. It is separate from the Martyrs' Memorial (which is in memory of the Bangladeshi soldiers and freedom fighters who died in that war). Both memorials are in Dhaka, to the best of my knowledge. Could you post pics if you have them?

Another question: would you know by any chance how many aerobridges Zia Airport and Chittagong airport respectively have?

Tmac

Zia International has recently become quite a good airport - a million times better than any other airport in the subcontinent except Shah Amanat Chittagong Intl. Airport. Chittagong airport is just amazing. From the interior design to the signs (gates etc), everything is really nice! Will try and take pics and post them next time I go to Chittagong. Chittagong has more than 5 (I think) aerobridges and Zia I would think more than ten. The whole back of the building is gates and the corridor is huge.

Govt to implement ‘Green Dhaka’ programme soon

Thursday April 21 2005 09:06:27 AM BDT

The capital city is going to have a greener look soon with the government implementing a massive ‘Green Dhaka’ programme, reports BSS.

A high-level meeting at the Prime Minister’s Office on Wednesday took a number of decisions to implement the Dhaka greening programme, official sources told.

The decisions include measures to plant trees in all suitable places like office premises, staff quarters, fallow lands, roadsides, embankments and riverbanks.

The meeting held at the directive of Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia under the ‘Committee for Good Governance and Development in Dhaka City’ was presided over by Prime Minister’s Principal Secretary Dr Kamal Uddin Siddiqui.

Secretaries, other senior officials and representatives from different agencies and departments including Dhaka City Corporation (DCC), Rajdhani Unnayana Kartripakkha (Rajuk), Dhaka Transport Coordination Board (DTCB), Roads and Highways Department, Public Works Department, Dhaka WASA and BIWTA attended the meeting.

Meeting sources said, plantation of trees will begin in all important roads, including Dhaka bypass, city protection embankment, banks of the Buriganga and other rivers, and other suitable places from the upcoming tree plantation season.

The meeting decided that the Prime Minister’s Principal Secretary would send letters to all secretaries to hold urgent meetings with the agencies and departments under their respective ministries to begin plantation of saplings in all possible places, including office premises, staff quarters and fallow lands.

Rajuk will take necessary measures to plant trees in those areas of the metropolis that fall outside the jurisdiction of City Corporation.

Since all types of trees are not suitable for all places, the DCC was entrusted with the responsibility of urgently preparing a tree plantation manual selecting species of trees for particular areas or zones of the metropolis.

The DCC, in collaboration with the Department of Forest, will hold tree fairs at different parts of the city and introduce awards for tree plantation to encourage the people.

The DCC will also formulate a motivation campaign strategy to encourage the people to plant trees at government, non- government and private initiatives.

The Information Ministry will take necessary measures to create public awareness through radio, television and newspapers.

The Secretary of the Ministry for Environment and Forest will sit with the authorities of all private and public nurseries to ensure production and supply of necessary saplings.

The owners of public and private organisations would be given necessary training in this regard.

The Department of Forest will supply booklets or manuals to all organisations regarding the plantation and nurturing of trees.

The meeting decided to sit once every month until October this year to review progress of the Dhaka greening programme, a follow-up of the successful implementation of a beautification progarmme in the capital.

JX: These are old pictures. The airport has changed a lot recently. It has tripled in size and there's even a cool duty free area by Aarong. Looks pretty good inside. But nothing beats Chittagong Airport (Shah Amanat). That ones just amazing.

Dhanmondi Lake - flows through the heart of Dhaka City. Apartments and shopping complexes occupy both sides of the lake these days. It is also a prime recreation spot for the citizens of Dhaka. Dhanmondi Lake boat club offers boat rentals for cheap prices.

I really like that second to last pic - I've never seen a shot of Kawran from Dhanmondi (in fact, I didn't realise that you could see it from there).

Also - a question to Tmac - have they repainted Ahsan Manzil, or is that a pic from after the restoration? A fresh coat of paint is long overdue.

Visiting Dhaka....

The best place to begin would be the Lalbagh Fort, at the edge of Old Dhaka (see a scene of old Dhaka). This fort overlooking the Burigonga River is an imposing yet incomplete Moghul fort. Begun in 1678 by Prince Azam, the third son of the last great Moghul Emperor Aurangazeb, the construction was taken up by his son Nawab Shaista Khan. Legend has it that, the death of his favorite daughter, locally known as Bibi Pari, caused a total suspension of the construction. The fort consists of long fortified walls with octagonal bastions. Within the walls there is a mosque and the Mausoleum of Bibi Pari, and the Audience Hall. There is an on-site museum that will enthrall the visitors.

Now that you are in the locality, you must visit the old city. Walk along the Waterworks Road until you reach the hub of the old city - Chowk Bazaar. You will be walking through a maze of tightly twisting roads, and you will be living and breathing 19th century Dhaka. The roads are narrow, and lined with tall precariously poised old buildings, the ground floors of which house shops, both wholesale and retail, selling everything that one can imagine. The streets are seething with pedestrians, innumerable rickshaws, pushcarts and even on occasions, a hackney cart. You may have the equal misfortune of almost being run over by a bullock cart or a late model Mercedes Benz.

At Chowk Bazaar, you will get to see the remains of the Bara Katra, a 1644 edifice built by Mir Abul Qasem. Little survives of this place, but it was originally built and conceived on the traditional caravansary model embellished with Moghul features. Close to it is the Chhota Katra, built in 1663 by Shaista Khan.

Further south, you can get to see the newly refurbished Ahsan Manzil, or the Nawab's place as it is often called. This was built in 1872 close to Wise Ghat, and was named after Nawab Ahsanullah Bahadur. Partially destroyed by a tornado in 1888, the building was abandoned and housed homeless people for many years until recently refurbished.

Another interesting sight to visit in the old Dhaka, is the Armenian Church, in Armanitola, built in 1791 by the Armenian colony on Holy Church Road. The Baldah Gardens is another must see, in Wari. This is a botanical garden built under the patronage of the Maharajah of Baldah, and amongst other fine specimens, houses one of the few examples of the Amazon Lily in this part of the world.

Along Islampur Road, you will find the Tara Masjid, the Star Mosque. This is one of the striking mosques in a city which is often called the city of mosques. The name derives from a glittering mosaic of broken china. Originally built in the 18th century, the mosaic was a later addition by a zealous and pious businessman. While we are on the topic of Mosques, let us not forget a Mughal mosque built in the provincial Moghul style in the 17th century by Shaista Khan. The Shaat Gombuj - Seven Domed - mosque can be found in the northwestern corner of the city, in Jafarabad. The mosque stands on high bank overlooking the Burigonga. It has three domes over the prayer hall, and four corner domes over octagonal towers.

Let us now move towards the somewhat newer parts of the city, to buildings and sights from the British Raj era. Curzon Hall in Ramna is a happy blend of European and Moghul architecture. These homogeneous looking buildings were built around 1905, after the partition of Bengal. They have a Victorian edifice with Mughal trimmings of cusped arches and kiosk-like turrets. This was originally built to be the town hall by Lord Curzon, the then Governor General of British India, but has now been taken over by the Dhaka University and is part of the Faculty of Sciences. Almost opposite is the Old High Court building; also built in 1905 in the prevalent neoclassical European way, it was originally conceived as the Governor's residence.

Let us wend our way to Dhaka's downtown, fast resembling metropolises anywhere with high rise buildings vying for supremacy in the commercial area of Motijheel. Right in the heart of this busy area is the National Stadium, officially seating 60,000, unofficially over a hundred thousand. Right next door is the Baitul Muqarram National Mosque built in a stylistic rendition of the Holy Kaabah in Mecca. The Kamlapur Railway Station is another must see, with its "gothic" like architecture.

Recently a new National Museum has opened up in Shahbag, and has a rich collection from Bangladesh's history. Close by is the Shahid Minar, the Martyrs Memorial, commemorating the deaths of 4 people in February 21, 1952 at the hands of police protesting against Urdu as the sole national language of Pakistan. The series of protests, called the Bhasha Andolon - language movement, initially calling for Bangla to be one of the national languages, gave rise to a nascent Bengali nationalism which eventually reached fruition of independent Bangladesh, after a 9 month long Independence War in 1971. The Shahid Minar is a stylistic representation of a mother and her children, representing Bangla the mother and Bengalis, her children.

Another striking set of buildings in Dhaka are the Jatiyo Shongshod - National Parliament complex at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, A colossal complex of geometrical proportion, it was conceived by the famous American architect Louis Kahn.

No trip to the city is complete without visiting the various monuments and mausoleums dotting the city. You have already seen the Shahid Minar, and further north of the city at Savar is the National Monument, commemorating the victory over the Pakistan Army, the Tin Netar Mazaar, the mausoleum of three leaders, the Shahid Buddhijibi Smriti Shousdho - the martyred intellectuals memorial, and the Mausoleum of deceased president Ziaur Rahman.

Star Mosque

Star Mosque is an architecturally faultless (Mughal style) five-dome mosque with hundreds of big and small twinkling stars as surface decorations.

The stars have been created by setting pieces of chinaware on white cement. Seen from the front and from far it looks as if shining above the surface of the earth. The inside of it is even more beautiful that the outside, lovely mosaic floor and excellent tiles with many floral patterns set on the walls, are all in complete harmony.

The sitara Masjid was built originally with three domes in early 18th century by Mirza Ghulam Pir, a highly respectable Zamindar of Dhaka.

Husaini Dalan, a Shiite shrine in the old part of the city of dhaka, attributed to the Mughal Period. It is a common practice among the Shia community to build edifices to commemorate the martyrdom of al-Husain, at the battle of Karbala in Iraq on the tenth day of Muharram 61 AH (10 October 680 AD).

Erected by one Sayyid Murad during the governorship of shah shuja, who, although himself a Sunni, was eager to preserve and patronise Shiite institutions. Traditions relate that Sayyid Murad, having seen al-Husain in a vision erecting a tazia khana (house of mourning), was inspired to raise the building, which he named Husaini Dalan. The original building may have been a small structure, expanded to its present form in later times. The east india company repaired it in 1807 and 1810, and a portion of the building was reconstructed after the earthquake of 1897.

Although the Sunni sect is a majority in Bangladesh, there is a small number of muslims belonging to the Shia sect in Dhaka. During the first 10 days of Muharram, it becomes a center of mourning and religious celebration in old Dhaka. Both the Sunni and the Shia followers join the mourning, ending in the festival of Ashura when a great procession parades through the streets.

Curzon Hall is a part of the school of science of Dhaka University. Curzon Hall meant to be a town hall, was named after Lord Curzon, the Viceroy of India, who laid its foundation in 1904. A year later Bengal was partitioned and Dhaka or Dacca as it was known then, became the capital of the newly created province of East Bengal and Assam. Following the annulment of partition in 1911 it was used as a premise of Dhaka College, and after the establishment of the University of Dhaka in 1921, the decision that made to please Muslims in East Bengal as a compensation for the annulment of the partition, became part of the university's science section and continued as such til date.

Baldah Garden : located at Wari, in the old part of Dhaka, it is set up by a private individual. The naturalist, philanthropist and poet Narendra Narayan Roy Chaudhury, landlord of the Estate of Baldah, established the garden on his own property in 1909. He collected different types of rare plants from almost all over the world from 1909 to 1940. The total area of the Baldah Garden covers 3.38 acres.

To enjoy the floristic beauty of the garden a rest house – cum – amphitheatre, called the Joy House, was built in the garden. Many celebrities have visited it, including Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore, whose poem Camelia was actually written while he was staying in this Joy House.

The collection of the garden is classified into seven categories – orchids, cacti, conservatory plants, aquatic plants, arboretum, and miscellaneous flora. The garden has about 15,000 plants representing 672 species. Many of these are exotic and rare plants; perhaps the richest collection of exotic plants in the country is housed in the Baldah Garden. The flora of the garden represents collections from over 50 different countries.

Unlike central station in Europe its actually located little far from the city centre and you get to the centre either by bus, cab or CNG. Bangladesh has good network of rail aroound the country and there are regular services on most routes. But interruptions and longer time made it unpopular among travelers who prefer to take faster but more expensive bus services.

Dhakeshwari Temple : This is the oldest Hindu temple in Dhaka City (11th century). The meaning of the name is "Temple of the Goddess of Dhaka". Legend has it that the city of Dhaka was named after this temple.

The origin of the Dhakeshwari temple is obscure. According to the popular legends, the original temple was built in 12th century by Ballal Sen, a Sena dynasty King based in Arakan (Myanmar) and the name of the city was coined after this temple. But the researchers found that the style of architecture of the temple cannot be a resemblance of that period. The temple complex has undergone repairs, renovation and rebuilding in its long years of existence and its present condition does not clearly show any of its original architectural characteristics.

Nevertheless, it is certainly an essential part of the cultural heritage of Dhaka city.

Rose Garden Mansion : This formerly Hindu Zaminder mansion, known as the ‘Rose Garden’ is not a garden of roses but in reality it is a pleasure lodge, built in the late 19th century. The lodge located at K.M Das lane, Tikatuli, in the Narinda quarter of Old Dhaka was erected by Zamindar Hrikesh Das. The building which remains a private property to date, has been renovated and painted by its recent owners keeping the original character fully maintained.

The building has wonderful Corinthian columns and has on its ground floor eight apartments including a central hall whilst the upper floor has a further five apartments including a large dance hall in the middle.

In the front yard, there was a fountain, the structure of which still remains. There are several classical marble statues in the garden. Though the rose garden that has given the mansion its name does not exist anymore, the extensive lawn with a small pond in the middle that was overgrown with wild grass, thickets and clumps of weed have been cleared and is in the stage of recovery.

Visitors are allowed to visit the place as an afternoon refreshment spot. The owners said that they wish to maintain the building and they have no plans till now to use them as their residential quarters and nor to make it a profit-based tourist spot. This tall, massive building is in good condition and stands proudly reaching the skyline.

Lalbagh Fort Complex : Built in 1678, the fort complex is located in the northwestern part of Dhaka on the banks of the Buriganga River. Prince Muhammad Azam, son of Emperor Aurangzeb, began the construction while he was serving as the Viceroy of Bengal. Governor Nawab Shaista Khan continued the project after Prince Azam was recalled to assist his father in the war against the Marhattas.

The southeastern gateway is a majestic structure built in the Mughal style. It was intended to be three storeys, but the upper storey was never completed. The inner facade has a four-centered archway with deep plastered semi-octagonal alcoves on either side. Short octagonal minarets define edges. The outer facade also has a four-centered archway flanked with plastered semi-octagonal alcoves. Above each alcove there is an oriel window in two stages that is capped by an elegant cupola. The central archway leads to a square domed hall with guardrooms on either side.

It appears that the defensive walls were reinforced by an internal embankment of earth along the east portion of the southwest corner. It contains an underground room, which may have been used as a summerhouse. The entrance is under a half-dome, which is decorated with ornamental plaster-cut work.

National Assembly Complex : National Assembly Building is one of the majestic public buildings in the city is located at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar. It's an architectural masterpiece for which the nation is proud of. This was designed by American architect, Luis I Kahn.

The mass of concrete lined with marble strips, the outer wall punctuated by pure geometrical openings and the dominating circular and rectangular concrete masses impart a supreme monumentality to the building quite suited to its noble functions. At the dead centre of the Assembly building is the main hall where MPs sit and the sessions of the parliament are held.

There is not a single column in the whole building. Hollow columns that are parts of space enclosures have been adapted as structural supports. It is more like a concrete mass carefully carved and sculptured into a superbly functional entity. The construction material used is concrete and cast concrete forms both interior and exterior surfaces.
