It would have helped if it was less comedic, a little bit more like in the style of Shameless, but obviously not as shameless. Nigerian emigrants are never serious about their identity, their they're never confident enough to show their culture in a serious light, instead they make everything Nigerian/African a joke to appease others, and then pick up other immigrants culture like that of Jamaicans. Nigeria has never been accurately shown in a foreign sitcom, series, or film, apart from one which featured Chiwetel Ejiofor. There are some SERIOUS stories that need to be told about the life of an immigrant in Britain, and not all of them can be told in a funny 'haha' way.

Oh yeah, and they need to cut the laughter track.

I thought you lived in the US or do you guys in Yankee watch Shameless?...I hope we're both referring to the correct show...I used to love that show even though I watched like 1 and a half episodes :D

.....well as for this show I can't pretend to like it, I'm just trying to patron something Nigerian on here...maybe someone else will dig it. It conveys comedy because that is the format of the show and yeah I suppose there could be some hard hitting drama depicting a decent portrayal of Nigerians with a really good script...maybe theres some out there already..I just don't delibrately seek them out...I stumble across all these things by accident.

And as for the show....well what can I say that hasn't already been mentioned. Judging from the 3 eps I saw it looked to me that they just relied on the Nigerian accent for cheap laughs because I failed to come in at the laughters cue...it just didn't tickle me. And Nigerians are funny people (well I suppose it's up to you if you laugh with them or at them ) but the producers made them seem like the most boring people on planet Earth :sleepy:....this show could have had more laughs than Fresh Prince...I really don't know who writes the script but I think they should try employing a freshie or something

Nigerian emigrants are never serious about their identity, their never confident enough to show their culture in a serious light, instead they make everything Nigerian/African a joke to appease others,

I disagree with this...Nigerians are generally unapologetic about who they are

Oh yeah and I've heard a lot of things about Chiwetel but I've never seen a movie that guy was in (mind you I hate watching movies though)....

There's a US Shameless. The Nigerian accent joke is about the only thing I've seen Nigerians/Africans using to represent themselves, apart from that, all the Nigerian kids use African American slang or patois, some are even embarrassed when you mention Nigeria, and let's not start with the fake American accents.

LOL, I see it right here on the Oasis! Anyway, the fact is even some Nigerian musicians have picked up American accents, whether they were born there or not. Nigerians are matching Jamaicans in the census in London, yet there's no such thing as Nigerian slangs used by non-Nigerians like some in the UK have complained that Jamaican patwa is overtaking speech in London.

Jamaicans are actually one of the first black immigrants to arrive in the UK (if not the first) so they would have obviously absorbed much more than Nigerians...A freshie Jamo is percieved to be cooler than say a Freshie Naija anyway...

Yes Jamaicans have left a visible stamp here in LDN from food to music etc in fact they are the most imitated immigrants mostly by school kids but after college hmm people start to get serious let's just say.

Nigerians ultimately come here because they want pound sterling and/or certificates or to just escape Naija altogether. Oh and lastly no bi onli Naijas wey dey greet pesin with how far again oh lol.

Also the means in which you compare both groups is primarily the entertainment industry...the career paths for many Nigerians differs to that of Jamos.... although I can see now some things have recently evolved i.e. some Nigerians go for the Arts/Media etc era

wtf are you talking about, im a nigerian kid, im always around nigerian kids, and i go to nation wide nigeria kid events regularly. we don't hide SHIT lol.

its the people that are 27-44 that use that fake accent. you'll never catch someone that's 26 and below doing that nonsense.
