It's a problem throughout the continent. My country's historical treasures are being looted by foreigners as well. It's disgusting.

The books of the library belong to the Chinguetti Friday Mosque where I think the scribes and imams keep a careful eye on the books. But I don't think the public should have access to the books as they are very old. African countries need to set up historical societies and orginizations to help keep watch over the ancient artifacts.

Amazing! It really has a beautiful architecture and the exotic Sahara "feel". Definitely has a tourism potential. They should renovate and classify this city as Unesco heritage. And the old books and artifacts should be protected as well.

A lot of Africa’s historical patrimony has been looted by westerners .
But go and try to grab now and you´ll get buried in the sand without the CIA finding you. :lol:

More seriously the nr 1 threat is the sand because of the progression of the Sahara.

They do not all belong to the Mosque, some people have huge private collection of religious, rhetoric, law, astronomy, mathematics, and medicine books that have been in their families for centuries !!! Sometimes these families refuse to let the government restore this books through the mauritanian institute for scientific research and try to keep them themselves. :ohno:

These are mauritanian foundations for the protection of the Chinguetti patrimony: fondation Chinguetti, Fondation Ahel Habott, Fondation Ahmed Mahmoud, Fondation nationale des villes anciennes, ... But the problem they have in common is money to finance the actions they would like to take to protect this important patrimony.

Its already on the UNESCO World Heritage listsince 1996 along with the other ancient mauritanian cities of Ouadane, Tichitt and Oualata. :cheers:

Until 5 years ago tourism was ok but now because of Al Qaida threats tourists are scared to come.
Nowadays thanks to the army the area is quite safe though.
