Phnom Penh Municipal officials met yesterday to discuss the Samdech Techo Hun Sen Boulevard project and potential compensation for city residents facing displacement due to the road’s construction, according to a municipal meeting agenda. Little is known about when construction will begin but locals in Chamkarmon district, where the new road will start, are concerned they will lose their land. Municipal authorities have asked residents to claim their land by today or face possible eviction, Vith Kia, a resident of Phsar Doeum Thkov commune, said yesterday.

Cambodia To Construct Its Biggest Boulevard Ever

Phnom Penh, March 28, 2011 AKP –The biggest boulevard ever in the history of Cambodia will emerge in the southern part of Phnom Penh Capital in a few-year time and be named as Samdech Hun Sen Boulevard – a dedication to the rare leadership of Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, the Prime Minister of Cambodia.

The three-year historic project has been officially agreed by the Royal Government of Cambodia and is undergoing feasibility study for the construction that will cost approximately US$36 million.

With 60 meter width and the length of more than nine kilometers, the Samdech Hun Sen Boulevard will link Street 271 of Phnom Penh to National Road 2 at Prek Ho district, Takhmao town of Kandal province. It is expected to contribute to solving the traffic congestion problem in the capital.

According to Phnom Penh Governor H.E. Kep Chutema, a thorough study is needed for the construction in order to ensure improved function of the two lakes that the Cambodia’s biggest boulevard will run across.

The two lakes, Boeung Tumpun and Boeung Choeung Ek, play a vital role to stock water from major sewage systems in Phnom Penh.

AZ TOWN company has been commissioned to construct the new boulevard. –AKP

60 meter width - I guess there will be at least 4 to 5 lanes in each direction :)

60m is huge, maybe it will have a strip of park/green in the middle.

It connects highway 2 to highway 2 :) from Kbal Tnol to north of Takmao without going through Takmao. Here are some photos:

It is good news. I think they must be careful in the design. It looks like, if not careful, there will be more traffic jam again at the phnom penh end. An overpass (from Monivong Blvd) should be considered there.

My house is on 271 near where the road is going to be built. They have filled in quite a bit of the wetland with sand, you can see this on Google Earth. I'm glad to read this from the link above:

Morever, keep in mind that Beoung Tom Pon, the biggest natural lake, is to be maintained in its best condition

It may not be true, but not proven otherwise yet, but I just hear from an insider working for the city hall in Phnom Penh that the reason they choose this location to build a blvd in the name of Cambodian PM (not sure if he realizes the purpose) is a pretext for filling the lake for development which may have environmental impact on the city.

The more I think of it, it may be so true. I don't think anybody with the right frame of mind would build the so far biggest blvd in Cambodia in the middle of a lake. There must be something behind the plan that we may not know. What do you guys think?

Building the biggest boulevard and this is a good excuse of filling up the lake, this area can be the future sites of government offices, or any other public buildings, or even sport complexes in preparation of the Seagames :)

Does it have room for an airport?

it will be cheaper and make more sense to reclaim the Solimex Site, if is big enough,

or better the whole of Mekong River Commitee site as well, for turn around, it will probably relieve the existing gridlock, and the potential problem the new Bld create.

Someone has removed the wiki entries.

We no longer have a confirm source to indicate if and when Cambodia is going to host the game.

Does it have room for an airport?

Probably. The whole wetland/lake is actually bigger than the main built up area of Phnom Penh. It's over 1000 hectares.

Not right now, but sooner or later we need one, probably within 20 years, so is better to reserve the land and think about the supporting infrasturure now.
