2011 Medal of Glory Award - A former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Ethiopia Airlines, Mr. Ato Girma Wake, has been named the recipient of the 2011 Medal of Glory Award (MOGA) by the organisers, the Foundation for Democracy in Africa (FDA). In a statement sent to PANA Tuesday, the organisers said the highest honour is awarded annually during the AfrICANDO Trade and Investment Symposium to ''exemplary leaders for their extraordinary contributions to economic, social, cultural and agricultural development and democracy in Africa''.

It said Mr. Wake was chosen from ''a list of solid contenders for his lifelong contributions to the development of civil aviation in Africa, and globally; and for linking markets and destinations within Africa (intra Africa), and connecting Africa to international markets and destinations.

The AfrICANDO US-Africa-Trade and Investment Symposium has been organised annually by FDA since 1997.

This year's AfrICANDO is scheduled to take place 15-16 Sept. 2011, and is expected to bring government and business leaders, particularly, small and medium business owners to Miami, US, from most of the 37 AGOA eligible sub-Saharan countries, to meet with their counterparts from the US and countries in the western hemisphere.

Partcipants will explore how to leverage Florida's access to markets in the Western hemisphere to support US-Africa trade under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA).

During AfrICANDO, producers, and buyers from Africa, the United States, and countries across the western hemisphere will showcase their goods and services during the trade expo at the Miami Free Zone, a 850,000 square ft. Foreign Trade Zone facilities; participate in workshops, and trade related site visits.

During the event, FDA will launch its AfrICANDO Skills and Business Development Program (ASBDP), which is designed to assist small and medium enterprises across various sectors, particularly, in rural communities with "how to" utilise the benefits of AGOA and expand their exports to the United States.
