View Full Version : Al Muthana
Yousifovic August 17th, 2011, 04:17 PM Al Muthanna Governorate (Arabic: المثنى Al Muthannā), is a province in Iraq. It is in the south of the country, bordering Saudi Arabia. Its capital is the city of Samawah, which is located very close to the ancient city of Uruk. Prior to 1976 it was part of the Diwaniya Province, which also included present day Najaf Governorate and Al-Qādisiyyah Governorate.
It also includes the ancient Babylonian ruin of Uruk (Aramaic: Erech), which is possibly the source of the name Iraq.

Yousifovic August 17th, 2011, 07:16 PM ^^ that castle is an old castle called Salman castle or Salman prison ..
read this article about it
and the other one is Ancient city of Uruk :)

that was a mistake. This building was made after 2003. the building made before 2003 is the Medical College HQ by the riverside which was the old baath party HQ.
PS.
Nassiriya is far better than Samawa. I don't know about Hillah.

Yes I figured you made a mistake after editing your post but I really liked that comment that I thought of so I decided to post it anyway.. :D
So we're actually able to produce some nice-looking buildings post-2003... how surprising. I guess they built that in the early years of the occupation before the plague of the aluminum cladding spread.
sheytanElKebir June 17th, 2012, 11:45 PM there are a lot of buildings built with that sort of cladding all over Iraq. its not all aluminium cladding.

Sawa lake is seen at sunset in Samawa, 270 km (160 miles) south of Baghdad, February 21, 2013. One of the most well-known lakes in Iraq, Lake Sawa, is a large closed body of salt water situated in the desert between Baghdad and Basra. The lake is dubbed by some as "the Pearl of the South" for its beauty and unique composition. It is surrounded by a cliff of piled sand dunes, providing a natural levee that keeps the water above ground level. As the lake has no proven link to either river or sea, the source of its water has been a mystery to researchers for centuries. Picture taken February 21, 2013. REUTERS/Mohammed Ameen

I know habbaniyah, and razzaza and tharthar.
those are not technically lakes but artificial water storage areas whereas sawa is a natural lake and was mentioned in the old testament too...
its true that almost no one from baghdad has heard of it though... but then people there are ignorant of most things south of al dora due to the "north south divide" of the past few decades.

Really??? I always thought those 3 were natural lakes...... so did they not exist more than 100 years ago? When were they created.
sheytanElKebir April 6th, 2013, 01:37 PM they were created in the 20th century when the barrages were built in samara and ramadi. before that sometimes they would naturally collect rainwaters from the valleys but were not permanent lakes.

sheytanElKebir April 7th, 2013, 02:55 AM HAA!!!
Dr Sarhan Al Khafaji was our geomorphologist on the Nassiriya Refinery project!! Very good guy and a professional dude.
at minute 18... the head of muthanna university is talking about making a solar updraft tower for power generation... an idea I proposed to them 4 years ago :D
elusive April 7th, 2013, 04:38 AM haha you're a genius sheytan
sheytanElKebir April 7th, 2013, 01:23 PM I was so surprised to hear him speak! very happy to see that the samawa university people didn't have the "in one ear out the other" attitude!
although the way they conducted their diving was very unprofessional... they should have used the RHIB to get in the lake and dive to the bottom... and pay $400 for a decent underwater cam!
elusive April 7th, 2013, 03:33 PM i know, was thinking the same...also not getting the boat in the lake was counterproductive, if a complication happened they would of been in trouble. Also, their conclusion that there are no fish in the lake is a bit misleading...the dead fish they found are new?
Ali_as April 8th, 2013, 12:15 AM Great pictures!
Personally, I love Muthanna. Samawa is beautiful because it's simple. The people (who I have met) are nice and quiet. It's like they're in their own bubble!
alshawi1234 April 8th, 2013, 01:31 AM This could be a great tourist attraction if they develop it. Build a small town near the lake, plant palm groves and trees, fix up the landscape, build a berth, level the shore to make it a proper beach. get a foreign company to build a 5 star hotel. Soon enough were going to see people coming from the west with drinks and bikinis
:) so much potential, unfortunately I don't think any Company will invest so much money to retaliate the area.
