The Pothys in Coimbatore opened newly, it targeted customers from Coimbatore, Erode, Tirupur, Karur and the Nilgiris District. Customers were expected from about 150 km radius around Coimbatore. The Pothys here had its strengths in terms of customer service, price and variety. Nearly 80 per cent of sales came from the mid-income segment. It had its own brand in silk – Samudrika, Parampara and Vastrakala Pattu

Pothys plans to open a showroom in Thiruvananthapuram shortly, according to its Managing Director S. Ramesh. Footwear brand Liberty has decided to expand aggressively in the South, especially in Tier-II cities.

Speaking to Business Line, Mr Anupam Bansal, Executive Director, Liberty Retail Revolutions, said there is a huge opportunity in that market as the consumer is tired of what is available and Liberty is seen as a fresh brand. Plus, real estate pricing is better.
Custom-made

“We haven't repackaged what we sell up North, and we don't intimidate the common man, but we're aspirational,” claims Mr Bansal, who believes the retail experience will make a difference to his business in these towns where there is much disposable income.

The range of footwear priced in these stores is Rs 99-3,000. To suit South Indian preferences, the footwear is mostly open, has toe rings and made to suit broad/big feet and uses absorbent material as the climate is humid, he explained.

The company intends to set up 20 stores, one a month in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka each. It recently opened stores in Salem, Villupuram, Coimbatore and Madurai. Tiruchi and Nagercoil are next.

It has three stores in Chennai and 30 in Bangalore. It expects to invest Rs 40-50 lakh in company-owned stores.

Liberty, an Indian footwear brand has taken its footprints to south India once again by opening an outlet in Tiruchirapalli. After receiving a good response in Salem, Liberty has now opened an outlet here. The store is spread over an area of 2,300 sq. ft. The brand has plans to open 20 stores in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka each as a part of its south India expansion plan via the franchise route.

Speaking on the occasion, Anupam Bansal, Managing Director, Liberty Retail Revolutions Ltd, said, “We are extremely pleased to launch our flagship store in Tiruchirapalli. The store is an addition to our portfolio in southern region. The store promises to be a consumer’s delight and will offer exciting range of products at affordable prices. The launch is a part of our aggressive expansion plans for the south market and we are looking at investing an amount of Rs 40-50 lakh in this financial year towards opening stores in other cities of this region.”

The new outlet promises a delightful shopping experience for the consumers with the help of an excellent trained staff. To suit South Indian preferences, the footwear is customised; they are mostly front open, have toe rings and are made to suit broad/big feet and use absorbent material as the climate is humid.

Retail shopping in Tiruchi has undergone a sea change in the recent past. A decade ago, Pick n Pack was our definition of 'the big store'. And then came a string of supermarkets and department stores, revolutionizing the middle class shopping experience in the city. There was a radical shift from harried housewives handing shopping lifts over the counter to parents wheeling trolleys loaded with sundry groceries, toys and instant foods, with kids in tow. Though the shopping mall syndrome is yet to strike root in the city, the latest thing on the deck is the mushrooming of the hypermarket or large format stores stocking vegetables, footwear, groceries and electronic appliances all under one roof. They have made shopping a family affair- an experience of sorts, with ambience and adjoining food courts playing up their advantage.

The ‘conservative spender' tag can no longer solely describe the average middle class Tiruchiite, claim retailers, though the market is price sensitive and people are more value conscious compared to their counterparts in other tier-two cities. A reason why, promotions and discounts are a selling point for stores here.

“With an increase in the spending capacity of people, sales have doubled, compared to the time of our establishment. People value the shopping experience highly,” says S.Sundaraj, Store Manager, Reliance Hypermart. Though the food segment is most sought after, the household goods and electronics segment has registered the highest growth and exhibits future potential, he reveals.

Abu Backer, Director of Femina Shopping Mall (FSM), a veritable shopping and entertainment hub in the heart of the city says customer preference for retail shopping has changed due to the rise in income and standard of living. An advanced version of FSM is coming up in Main Guard Gate and is expected to be operational within a year.

The USP of this structure would be an air conditioned food court. For a city starved of hangouts, mushrooming food courts around the city are a welcome trend. With the city poised for growth, retail trade would receive a shot in the arm, predicts Mr.Backer. He believes that overall infrastructure development could make Tiruchi an attractive proposition for people from other cities to settle down here and consecutively boost retail trade.

Recent trend

Harikrishna of Spensers Hyper, echoes the same thought. “The city holds a lot of potential with recent developments and increasing investment. There is a recent trend of people moving from other cities to Tiruchi for work. Retail experience has changed over the couple of years. With people giving priority to the shopping experience, large format stores have potential. It is not merely the experience, but quality and price that people are conscious about too.” The store's focus is on developing the fresh and processed food segment.

Big brands have also made an impact in the recent past. The middle class male never had it so good before, with a plethora of big apparel and footwear brands opening retail outlets here. “Customers here have become brand conscious in recent times and there is a definite preference for branded products,” says Balamurugan, Manager, Mega Mart, Tiruchi. “Both in-house brands and partner brands have seen registered increasing demand .And discounts work well with the Tiruchi market, as people are value conscious.”

This is not a city that one would associate with extravagance. Splurging would be a complete misfit, for materialistic instincts have always prowled low. Purse strings have always been tightened at this part of the world.

For long Tiruchi has been labelled ‘conservative' with regard to its spending population, as in other non-economic aspects. But the availability, nay plethora of high-end electronic appliances and gadgetry available here point to a rethink of consumer demographics.

The average middle class Tiruchiite seems to have fallen under the trance of technology. With an inclination to keep up with his counterparts in metros, the fascination for the latest technology on the deck is evident from consumer preferences for mobile phones, jewellery and appliances.

White goods are no longer the premise of the well-heeled. The number of outlets dealing with electronics and gadgets of every kind bear testimony. Nagappan, Sri Nagappa Electronics Limited Sony showroom, hints at the trend of seeking the newest on the rack.

“It is not LCDS but LEDs that drive the sales. Preferences include 3D and High Definition live coverage. People want the latest in the market.”

While refrigerators and washing machines raked in the moolah during the Deepavali sales, LED television sales shows an upward graph- so much so that ordinary television sets are passé and some shops do not stock them.

The price of gold may be climbing the charts, but jewellery stores, notably the big ones in the business are opening outlets here, upping the completion. There has also been a shift in preference from chunky traditional designs to lightweight simple designs.

Diamond has a growing legion of consumers, reveal store managers, who hesitated to stock diamond jewellery not very long ago. The precious stones market is also catching up.

There is no end of choices for the ‘have it, will flaunt it' generation of mobile phone aficionados. With mushrooming of large format stores, picking up appliances along with provisions has made it as easy as that. The grip of technology seems to have been cast in steel.

Store manager of a hyper mart in the city says that despite food, apparel and household items being its primary targets, the focus would be to strengthen its electronics segment that registered 200 percent sales growth. Retailers are positive that this is just the beginning and the potential for high end goods is yet to be plumbed.

Food festival from September 1

http://img830.imageshack.us/img830/7124/suvaisep2011.jpg

Tiruchiites can gear up for a multi-cuisine gastronomic experience, as the mother of all food festivals, ‘Suvai 2011', bringing together more than twenty leading hotels and restaurants under the umbrella of Trichy Travel Federation (TTF), is back with a second edition that promises to be bigger and better.

Following the success courted by the maiden edition, the four day festival will have more than 30 food stalls featuring South Indian, Keralite, Chinese, Continental, ethnic and sea food. The highlight of the festival this year is a signature dish featured by each stall. Variations in dosas, parotas, sandwiches, biryani, cakes and ice creams are set to entice visitors, according to M.Ponnilango, convenor of Suvai.

All food items will be sold at subsidised prices to ensure that visitors get to taste the fare dished out by all stalls, according to V.Vasudevan, President, TTF.

The entertainment quotient has been upped this year with cultural events including ‘Paavai koothu', a traditional folk art ,set to be staged on all four days.

Competition is not merely limited to participating restaurants who will vie for the ‘best stall' and ‘best signature dish' award; an eating contest for men with the ‘Beema award' at stakes on September 2 and cookery contests on September 3 and 4 are slated.

Chef Dhamu will judge the competitions and hold a special cooking demonstration. Air line tickets are in the offing for winners of the lucky draw contest.

N.R.Sivapathi, Minister for Animal Husbandry and Welfare, will inaugurate the mega event. Games have been arranged for children.

Though in terms of participating entities and events, the food festival resembles its previous edition, organisers promise it will sport a more professional look this year, steering clear of teething problems. An exclusive parking space well marked dining area with seating capacity of 800 and improved cleaning services are this year's add-ons.

The organisers hope to better last year's visitor record and anticipate around 30,000 visitors this year, said Maluk Mohamed, Joint Secretary, TTF.

The food festival will be held at Vestry school grounds from September 1 to September 4 between 5 to 11 p.m. Entry fee is Rs. 20 for adults and Rs. 10 for kids.

To register registrations for contests, contact 81247 70005

Whet your palate at food carnival

It is the four letter word that is doing the rounds these evenings right in the heart of the city- for ‘food' dictates stalls, contests, plates and people at Suvai 2011 organised by the Tiruchi Travel Federation on the Vestry school grounds here.

Though the food carnival did not get a head start like its previous venture owing to festivals and rains, it is all abuzz this weekend. The USP of the festival is the sheer assortment designed to whet palates and make stomachs groan. Where else do you get to indulge in the choicest fare dished out by the city's leading hotels and restaurants without burning a hole in your pocket?

If you spot a few prominent names missing or the festival lacking in imagination compared to the previous edition, then blame it on the season. Restaurateurs are working double time to dish out a sumptuous fare despite the wedding season in full flow, point out organisers.

The hike in food prices has not left the menu rates untouched though the portions are bigger this time around. Stalls have also worked on ambience this year and most counters sport thematic décor.

Fare

Keen to shed its elite tag, SRM Hotel has reversed conceptions with a tea- kadai stall decked with newspapers and movie posters. Keeping with the theme are varieties of bajis and fried items. Hotel Sangam has decked up a spread right from God's own country with ‘vatayappam' and ‘meen varuthathu' making the list. Hotel Femina has recreated the Chinese experience with typical décor and costumes while Hotel Ramyas has gone the marine way, with sea food fried, barbecued and grilled.

There is no dearth of Chettinad food with Hotel Kannappa, Kongu Park and New Khurrinji restaurant, catering to traditional tastes with a similar theme as last year's. Not to be left behind, would-be chefs from the Jenneys Academy threw a Chinese spread with momos as the signature dish while the State Institute of Hotel Management and Catering technology reinvented the humble parota in interesting variations.

If you want to keep it light, there is the sandwich bar by the Breeze Residency with exciting vegetarian and non-vegetarian entries. And for the sweet–toothed are rolls and cakes by Bread Basket. For idlis and dosas, head to Shri Sangeetas and for smacking biryani variations, try Imbala and Dindigul Vel. Hot Chicken, FSM Grill Chick and Lazza ice creams add to the experience.

The cookery contest had women proving their prowess while eating contest had a restricted number of participants compete for the ‘Beema award'. While on the second day contestants tried to polish off a kilo of cake, the third day saw them gorging on idlis, sans any accompaniment. The winner downed 13 idlis in 10 minutes. Chef Dhamu held a cookery demonstration and adjudged the events.

Enthralling audiences with an art lost in time are the pavai koothu artistes staging mythological and contemporary themes.

The food festival concludes on September 4 between 5 and 11 p.m. Entry fee is Rs. 20 for adults and Rs. 10 for kids.

Is it true where is the exact location of the store. It is great that store is opening in outer areas and not in tillainagar or big bazar. If KGS Mall also started functioning we can expect more branded shops and also a great growth for trichy.

With a little more than a month left for the biggest festival in this part of the world, shopping is all set to become the obsession of the season. Kick-starting the purchase fever would be ‘Utsav 2011', a two day shopping festival organised by city-based women's forum ‘Aura'.

Utsav 2011 to be held on September 24 and 25 at Hotel Sangam, would be a celebration of the shopping experience that women cherish, said Rajalakshmi Rajesh founding member, briefing media persons on the forthcoming event. Exclusive clothing, jewellery and accessories would be the highpoint of the event planned to help Tiruchiites celebrate Navarathiri and Deepavali in style, said Subha Rangarajan, another member.

The shopping bonanza promises a classy and hassle-free experience, something that is hard found in a conventional festival atmosphere. The festival would be styled on the lines of its 2009 maiden edition and hold more than 30 stalls featuring a range of high-quality products at discounted prices.

Diamonds, traditional and fashion jewellery, leather handbags, designer sarees, trendy footwear and a range of accessories sourced from Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, Coimbatore and Calcutta, would feature among the spoils, according to member Mythily Ramanan.

Though, predominantly, a women territory, ‘Utsav 2011' would also have a few stalls catering to men and children offering corporate gifts, car accessories, furniture, baby frocks, chocolates and confectionery, according to member Savithri Saravanan.

A ‘Helen O Grady' drama workshop also figures in the list of stalls that would offer merchandise rarely seen in the city, according to member Vrinda Ramanan. Vijaya Mahali, wife of the Inspector General of Police, Central Zone, K.C.Mahali, will inaugurate the festival. Attractive prizes are up for grabs in the form of lucky draws. Entry to the expo is free.

An audio-visual presentation on traditional jewellery and textiles by photojournalist Rupa Gopal is slated for members, said Vidya Madan.

The ladies forum founded by seven women hosts two public events annually, including the all-women car rally, to bring entertainment from other shores to the city, said Rajeshwari Ramakrishnan.

Coloured smoke, beaming lights, roof thudding music and frenzied dancing- the showdown for three days of talent sparring ended in an evening of uninhibited revelry with students letting their hair down with verve at the finale of ‘Festember XI' at the National Institute of Technology – Tiruchi on Sunday.

The venue saw temperatures soar with solo performances by popular playback singers Suresh Peters, Suchitra Karthik, Javed Ali and young artistes from Coke Studio. Though, the show fell short of recreating the magic of some of its previous editions, it proved to be a fun filled outing.

Eyeing NIT-T as an ideal venue for non-filmy songs, Coke Studio kick-started the evening with some heavyweight strumming and drumming under the guise of an amalgamation of Indian and western music and throwing in a Portuguese number as well. Though the young crowd took some time to warm up to the music, the low-key start was merely an appetiser for the power packed numbers that followed.

With Suresh Peters prompting everyone ‘to have a party', with ‘Humma Humma' from ‘Bombay' and a medley of ‘Urvasi, Urvasi' and ‘Chikku Bukku Railye' ,the 90's numbers to stirred up fist pumping, hip swaying action.

With the crowd calling out ‘suchi, suchi' RJ turned singer Suchitra Karthik's entry was greeted by thunderous cheers.

Joining Sanjay T from Coke Studio for ‘Indain Jadoo', the duo attempted an impromptu experimental fusion.

As the intermediate performer in a three phase function, Suchitra only revved up the tempo with a string of ‘kuthu' songs, ably assisted by Santosh, runner-up of the latest edition of ‘Airtel Super Singer'.

While Suchitra set the stage sizzling with ‘Aadava' from ‘Mankatha' and ‘ Dol, dol' in husky tones, Santosh earned plaudits of his own, with folksy numbers like ‘Otha sollala', ‘Kutti pisase' and ‘Vachukava'. The highly hypnotic Telugu number ‘Ringa ringa' marked the end of the duo's performance.

Popular singer Javed Ali provided a respite to the head banging tunes with some soulful music in the form of ‘Tu meri dost hai' and ‘Jashn e bahara', followed by a medley of ‘Ballelaka' and ‘Maula maula'. His recent chartbuster, ‘Kilimanjaro' proved his versatility as the spectacle winded up with ‘Nagada Nagada' from ‘Jab we met'.

Earlier, SASTRA University romped home with the overall shield nudging past defending champions VIT who had to contend with second place.

Ramesh Prabha, Coordinator, Kalaignar TV, distributed the prizes. Calling for promotion of extra curricular activities on par with academics, he said events like Festember were crucial for students to develop key skills for entry into corporate life.

Commenting on the ASSOCHAM analysis, its secretary general, Mr. D S Rawat said that, the articles that are likely to be shopped intensively during Diwali would include electronic items, gift articles, idols of Gods and Goddesses, sweets, flowers, clothes & jewellery and diamonds due to discount range from 10-15% to 80-90% depending upon product vertical and other offers are lucky draws, free shipping, free gifts and gift vouchers.

Mr. Rawat further added that the expected growth during key festivals like Karva Chauth, Dhanteras, Diwali, the online shopping portals will go up by 30-35% this diwali. So, online shopping seen a phenomenal rise in the country and will continue to do so given the great potential and the huge segment of population which is still not net savvy.

The reasons for e-shoppers number multiplying are because of factors such as home delivery which saves time, secondly '24x7' hours shopping with ease and availability factors for product comparisons.

Gujarathis are taking lead in ordering their Diwali requirements of consumer durables product followed by Maharahtrian, Delhiites, Sindhi’s, Rajasthanis and Punjabi. The percentage of South Indians is equally strong.

Keeping this boom in mind a lot of online players have already announced exclusive Diwali deals and even exclusive Diwali shopping stores. Besides for rediff.com the other shopping sites like ebay, homeshop18, sify, indiaplaza and indiatimes have also opened shop for Diwali offers and are enticing online buyers with discounts.

These shopping portals are witnessing a large number of users buying gifts and products also for personal use. Cashing in on the growing number of online shoppers, portals like rediff and ebay are readying themselves for increased traffic, with a series of offerings to consumers.

As per ASSOCHAM estimates, for any shopping site, the sales are expected to go up by around 20-30% month on month during October.

Non-resident Indians (NRIs) are also shopping more online during the festive season. During Raksha Bandhan, online shopping by NRIs contribute to about 40-50% of total shopping, whereas during Diwali, it increases to 85%, adds the paper.

Rediff has announced a series of offerings for its consumers, which includes offering of special gift vouchers of Rs 1,500 with every purchase. The single portal has also seen an increase in the number of visitors each day from 1,00,000 to 1,50,000 during the festive season, which adds up to 7 million visitors a month.

Similarly, other portals are also introducing the ‘Get lucky’ offer, where consumers who shop on the portal will get a discount coupon of 10-50% on all their purchases.

The products that are sold most are in the tech and fashion category, which include mobile phones and accessories, MP3 players, digital cameras and jewellery, among others, said Mr. Rawat.

Online shopping boom is not restricted to metros alone. Lucknow ranks high, followed by Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Dehradun, Nasik, Trichy, adds the Assocham report.

Business reaches a feverish pitch around the Fort area, the commercial citadel of the city every Deepavali. But year after year shopping continues to remain a harrowing experience as infrastructure and facilities are yet to catch up with the pace of development, resulting in pedestrians elbowing hawkers and two wheelers jostling pavement sellers while navigating the narrow lanes.

Restricting vehicular traffic and shifting hawkers to facilitate better pedestrian movement are reiterated needs. Though barricades are set up near Teppakulam, SRC Road and other vantage points and auto-rickshaws have been restricted from plying here, two-wheelers and four wheelers send crowds scurrying to the sides, every now and then. Inundation A steady spell of rain for fifteen minutes on Saturday rendered the N.S.B. Road a potential health hazard with shoppers wading through sewage water mixed with rain water, inundating the roads. “There are drainage pipes in front of all the shops, yet even a short spell of rain has sewage water inundating the roads.

It usually takes three hours for the water to recede,” says a shop owner near Teppakulam. The N.S.B. Road where the biggest showrooms and non-descript of shops thrive side by side is plagued by constant chaos. The Main Guard gate entrance and the environs surrounding Teppakulam are laid siege to by pavement vendors, handcarts and fruit hawkers selling wares right in middle of the road, making pedestrian movement chaotic. Relocation A number of makeshift shops and pavement sellers crop up on N.S.B Road during the festival season. Relocating these shops to a separate area would help them do business while easing the congestion, said N.Ramakrishan, convenor of Federation of Welfare Organisations. “If they (police) catch me, I'll have to pay Rs.1,000. But I have nowhere else to park and this is the best place for sales,” says a potato vendor with his handcart parked almost in the middle of the road. Another vendor with his wares displayed in front of a showroom agrees he has encroached. “The showrooms allow us to use the space in front of the shop for ten days. The police threaten to book cases against us every day, but we manage to get away.”

A street shop owner, who did not wish to be quoted said, “We are obliged to pay Rs.20 to the police everyday. We cannot do without their protection; theft is common at the road side shops and police will assist us only if we pay the dues.” A constable positioned a few feet away said vendors are allowed to peddle their wares as long as they don't create a public nuisance. “This is the only time they can make business, so we are usually indulgent.” Though there are vendors only on one side of the road, more are set to crop up on both sides on the eve of Deepavali.

Making the most of Tiruchiites apparently growing fascination for ‘a woman's best friend,' branded jewellery retailer Tanishq, showcased its high-value exquisite diamond jewellery collection here to familiarise prospective customers with a range of sparklers.

The three-day exhibition at Tanishq Show Room, Fort station road, which concluded on Sunday, showcased a blend of traditional and contemporary designs to appeal to the sensibilities of the new Indian woman. Around 1000 designs worth Rs.60 crore with high craftsmanship and elegance as hallmarks dazzled visitors.

“The expo attracted many first time investors who had hitherto confined to gold as the sole option. These diamonds make for a lucrative investment as diamonds here are valued at the current market price,” said Annamalai, proprietor.

The “Hi-Value Diamond” jewellery range presented a variety of diamond cuts from conventional round shapes to fancy cuts like marquise, cushion, emerald, pear, oval, heart, trillion and radiant, said a press release issued here. A 20 per cent discount on a single product valued more than Rs.2 lakh was offered. The assortment included ear rings, bangles, rings, pendants and necklaces priced up to Rs.1 crore. The jewellery cache would be displayed at all major showrooms of Tanishq. While few pieces are available in the showroom, orders can be placed from the catalogue.

Crossposting from Coimbatore thread :

thecinema @ Brookefields will make all efforts to bring a film festival to Coimbatore very soon, said Swaroop Reddy, director of SPI Cinemas.

He was talking to reporters on Tuesday to formally announce the launch of thecinema @ Brookefields from Wednesday.

K. Munikanniah (vice-president, scheduling), Bhavesh Shah (head of experience), Niranjan (head of operations), Teddy Joshua (head of engineering) and Ashwin Balasubramanian of Brookefields Mall were present.

Mr.Reddy and Mr.Munikanniah said that Sathyam Cinema and Escape in Chennai from the house of SPI Cinemas were hosting a film festival from December 14 to 22.

SPI Cinemas would bring the film festival to Coimbatore very shortly.

Mr. Swaroop Reddy said that the 43,000 sq.ft. area would have six screens, Barco Projectors with 4K resolution and silver screens with 2.4 gain to offer movies in Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, Hindi and English.

The total seating capacity was 1,500 and each screen varied in its seating capacity. The theatre was fully automated.

Facilities

On coming to Coimbatore at a time when the cinemas across the State were facing constraints, Mr.Swaroop Reddy said that the success was in providing the right facilities and right ambience to customers and the SPI Cinemas would do it in Coimbatore as well, as it had done in Chennai.

Ticket rates

Film director R.V. Udayakumar, who graced the occasion, said that Sathyam Cinemas in Chennai revolutionised movie viewing and would do the same in Coimbatore as well.

He said that tickets at fixed prices would be the hallmark of thecinema@Brookefields.

Mr.Swaroop Reddy said that based on the response, thecinema@Brookefields would try to have more screens in the city by signing up with promoters of upcoming malls.

SPI Cinemas was open to the idea of setting up screens in tier-II cities in Salem, Puducherry, Madurai and Tiruchi where the mall culture was fast catching up.

The first day response, even before announcing or advertising the launch, had been overwhelming.

He also added that the door delivery of tickets would be within a fixed radius in the city at an additional service charge.

Parking facilities

Mr.Ashwin Balasubramanian said that some annexing of space for creating parking facilities was on the cards and operation of shuttle from the parking space to the mall would also be arranged in future.

The show timings were staggered and hence the movement of people both at the entry and exit points would not be a problem even during weekends, he added.

Nissan Ashok Leyland Technologies Ltd, a JV between Ashok Leyland and Nissan Motors that launched LCVs for cargo transportation this September, has said it will make a foray into the passenger transport vehicle segment in the next couple of years.

In its second phase of expansion, the company will launch passenger segment vehicles and goods light commercial vehicles powered by diesel and CNG fuel, Hinduja Automotive Ltd Executive Vice Chairman and Nissan Ashok Leyland Technologies Chairman V Sumantran told PTI.

The LCV for goods transportation will be of 12.5 GVW (Gross Vehicle Weight), with a pay load capacity of 5-6.5 tonnes. In the passenger segment, the seating capacity would be for eight to 24 passengers. Commencing 2012-13, one new variant would be launched every year for the next 4-5 years, he said.

The company has plans to ramp up the production capacity of DOST, its LCV model with a GVW of 2.5 tonne vehicles.

"We launched the vehicle in September. The reaction and response from the market has been very positive. The booking had surpassed 3,000 units. In this financial year, the production facility at Hosur plant is getting ramped up. During the first quarter of next year, we will hit 55,000 units production per annum," he said at the inauguration of the company's 21st dealer outlet in Tiruchirapalli.

As of now, the focus was on the southern and western regions of the country, Sumantran said. The network would be expanded to 55 by the first quarter of next year to cover northern and eastern India.

The three-day study involving ornithologists, bird researcher, bird call specialist, bird photographers and field biologist besides Forest Department officials was carried out to estimate bird species composition, distribution, diversity and their abundance in Pachamalai hills, which are part of the Eastern Ghats.

The first phase of the survey was conducted by the Tiruchi Forest Division with technical support from Dr. G. Christopher of the Advanced Centre of Environmental Studies, Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, from December 3 to 5.

Notable among the 28 species of migratory birds recorded in the green hill range were the Common Rose Finch, Warbler, Asian Paradise, Greenish leaf, Fly Catcher and Common Buzzard.

Eight nocturnal species including Brown Fish Owl, Jungle Owlet, Collared Scops Owl; 13 species of Raptors such as Rufous-bellied Hawk Eagle; White- eyed Buzzard; Short-toed Snake-Eagle and Booted Eagle were also recorded.

Western Ghats endemic bird - Rufous Barbler and Emerald Dove, the State bird of Tamil Nadu, were also sighted during the study.

Two camps were set up - one at Sobanapuram and the other at Top Sengattupatti - to carry out the survey and 10 transects were surveyed each representing different attitudes and habitat types. The survey was based on species encounter method and transect walks were taken up in the mornings and evenings at a pace of two kilometre per hour, the District Forest Officer I. Anwardeen told The Hindu here. The second phase of the survey would commence shortly, he added.

Among those who formed part of the team that carried out the survey were Akashdeep Baruah, Conservator of Forests, Tiruchi; Prasanth Narayanan, a bird researcher; Santhian Mepaiyur, a bird call specialist; Prof. E. Mikey, Daisy and their one-and-a-half-year-old daughter Bonita get their food, toys, haircuts, accessories, medicated products and medical check-ups done at a single place, Pets Forum. For the three Rottweilers and their owner, Nisha Purushotham, being and owning a pet just became a lot easier.

Tapping into the increasingly popular concept of offering everything in pets care under one roof, SKS Pets Forum has rolled into a single package all that doting owners and their four-legged companions might need.

Says M. Gourishankar, Administrator, Pets Forum, “This is much more than a pets' clinic, for it offers not just medical assistance to pets, but also a wide range of products to choose from. Over 700 international and local brands in food, prescribed diets, food supplements, shampoos, conditioners and accessories are available here.”

Already a trend in major cities, these dedicated shops bring both quality and quantity into the equation. To begin with, food products for dogs, cats, hamsters, parrots and guinea pigs also address a variety of dietary requirements.

“Segregated according to size, breed and medical condition, the products can attend to even issues like obesity, cardiac problems, sensitive skin and oral problems,” says Ram, who had brought his Dobermann puppy in for a vaccination.

Stocking a variety of accessories, Pets Forum has hair brushes, tick pluckers, nail clippers, training ropes, pet carriers (for travel), feeding bowls and pet beds; medicated shampoos and conditioners to cure bacterial and fungal infections; colourful collars and pendants, leashes and T-shirts for pets.

Mr. Gaurishankar says medical care and boarding for dogs and cats are also offered. “Equipped with four in-house veterinary doctors, a laboratory and an X-ray machine, we are capable of performing even complicated procedures. Many official dog squads bring their dogs here for medical assistance,” he says.

Pets Forum can house four dogs and four cats at a time. According to Ms. Nisha, travelling is tougher for pets than for their owners. “Their cleanly maintained kennels have given me the confidence to leave my children here the next time I travel,” she says.

Upping the indulgence quotient are the spa offerings at Pets Forum, which include haircuts, bathing, hair grooming and cleaning of ears, urinary tracts and genitals.

Barely three months since inception, the shop has had customers coming in from as far as Pudukottai, Mannarkudi, Karur, Tanjore and Manaparai.

More outlets in other major cities of Tamil Nadu are in the pipeline, according to Mr. Gaurishankar.

Pets and their owners can find Pets Forum at North East Extension, Third Cross, Thillai Nagar, and reach them at 0431-4000788.

The loudest fireworks, the most sumptuous from around the world, and a delicious cake, awaited the winners of the ‘Be a Star' event organised by Hotel Sangam to usher in the New Year. Culminating in Saturday's celebration were the five finalists of various contests held since December 28, who put up their best in genres like music, dance, acting and mimicry.

While the finalists contested for the titles Super Kid, Yuvan, Yuvati, Mr. Tiruchi, Mrs. Tiruchi and Super Kudumbam the audience were entertained with a slew of professional performances. With the Moon Walkers Dance Troupe rocking the stage with their cinematic, classical and folk dances, playback singers performing karaoke versions of various popular numbers, magicians pulling off tricks and mimicry artistes adding laughter to the air, the excitement in welcoming the New Year steadily mounted among the audience.

International cuisine

Speaking about the event, K.Prasanna Rao, food and beverage manager, Hotel Sangam, said the dinner line-up for the occasion was a confluence of various international cuisines. “We have themed our special New Year dinner buffet upon the seven wonders of the world and have incorporated some novel dishes from cuisines like Mexican, Thai, Chinese, Japanese, the Middle-East and of course, India,” he said. The best dishes from the ensemble will later be incorporated into the hotel's regular menu as well.

Radio Jockeys from Hello FM 106.4, the event partners, kept the spirit of the evening alive and conducted several on-the-spot games for the audience. “Though the concept of celebrating New Year's Eve in this fashion is pretty new to Tiruchi, the participation has been phenomenal. These events are here to stay and will help Tiruchiites to develop the attitude such events require and gain useful exposure,”[B] said Saha, Station Head (Tiruchi), Hello FM 106.4.

Wishing everyone is a winner, there were prizes for every single person at the celebrations. “While the first prize winners from each category will be given two flight tickets to Singapore or Colombo, those who bag the second and third prize will get to stay at star hotels for a period of two days and three nights. Besides these, there are consolation prizes for those who come fourth and fifth as well,” said Mr. Prasanna, who added that prizes worth between Rs. 2,000 and Rs. 8,000 could be won at the various on the spot events.

[B]The night's celebrations were attended by a number of tourists from countries like Spain, Italy, U.S.A, France and Mexico

Having had to cancel their plans to spend New Year's Eve at Puducherry because of ‘Thane' these foreigners decided to stay on at Tiruchi and welcome the New Year from here instead.

A function organised jointly by various music sabhas to honour mridangam vidwan ‘Tiruchi' Sankaran motivated the sabha office-bearers to chart out a plan for organising annual music festival, on the lines of the one being organised in Chennai by leading and noted music institutions.

Mr. Sankaran was honoured with the FGN Memorial award by the Rasika Ranjana Sabha and a cross section of sabha representatives and vidwans honoured him on the occasion with mementos.

In his acceptance address, Mr. Sankaran underlined the need for organising an annual music festival in the city and the joint effort by all the music sabhas in the city would set a new trend in the State.

In this context, he referred to a proposal mooted on the occasion by A.Venkata Ganesh, secretary of Sri Karpaga Vinayagar Isai Sangam, Srirangam, to organise the annual festival so as to cater to the needs of music lovers and also musicians.

Mr. Sankaran went down the memory lane and said that his first ‘arangetram' in 1955 was with eminent singers of Alathur Brothers, when Lalgudi Jayaraman provided violin support.

He said that in his long journey along the ocean of music, he had undergone rigorous practice under great musicians in the order of ‘Palakad' Mani Iyer; Venkataraman and others. He considered the award conferred in his native soil as the greatest achievement.

A.K.C. Natarajan, clarinet maestro, who presided over the function, appreciated the joint effort by all ‘sabhas' in the city in organising the festival. R. Tahyumanavan, noted mridangam artiste, said that Mr. Sankaran had fully utilised the knowledge in music gifted to great musicians in the order of Musiri Brothers.

N. Gopalswamy, Director of Dalmia Cements (Bharath) Limited, said that Mr. Sankaran's achievements including the honour from the Music Academy with ‘Sankeetha Kalanidhi' award testified to his devotion and dedication to his mentors. Nagai R. Muralidaran, violin artiste, referred to Mr. Sankaran;s extraordinary contribution to this fine arts.

N. Sekar, honorary secretary of Rasika Ranjana Sabha, who read out a citation, referred to Mr. Sankaran's commitment in learning music. Padma Swaminathan, daughter of the late F.G. Natesan, founder of the Sabha, in her message, recalled Mr. Sankaran's extraordinary capability in handling the percussion instrument.

S. Thiyagarajan, secretary of Sri Sathguru Thiagbrahma Aradhana Trust, referred to Mr. Sankaran's association with great musicians including Subramanian in Tennur. A 45-day government trade fair, organised by Department of Information and Public Relations, got underway at the St.John's Vestry Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School grounds in the city on Thursday.

The exhibition features 21 stalls by government departments and agencies, highlighting various government schemes and achievements. Ten stalls by private traders and amusement enclosures for children also form part of the exhibition.

Declaring open the fair, K.T.Rajendra Balaji, Minister for Information and Special Programme Implementation, said the government trade fair is being organised in the city after a gap of about 12 years.

Apart from highlighting the government schemes, they were also a leisure and entertainment avenue for people. The fair also served as a platform for showcasing traditional art forms and the culture of the State.

Gold coins distributed

The Minister, who distributed gold coins and marriage assistance to about 490 women under the marriage assistance scheme, affirmed that Chief Minister Jayalalithaa was committed to put the State on the forefront of development in the country.

P.Shankar, Director, Information and Public Relations, said the government trade fairs, a regular event some years back but suspended over the past few years, have been revived now.

Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has ordered that similar fairs should be organised in all the panchayat unions in the State.

The fairs would be organised in 97 panchayat unions in the first phase soon. The government has also increased the quantum of fund sanctioned for the annual multi-media exhibitions, he said.

Collector Jayashree Muralidharan said the fair would help sensitise people to the various welfare and development schemes implemented by the government.

P.Kumar, MP, M.Paranjothi, N.R.Sivapathi, R.Manoharan, T.P.Poonatchi, and Indira Gandhi, MLAs, A.Jaya, Mayor, and G.Thanappan, Deputy Director, Information and Public Relations, spoke.

Though the opening of the trade fair was deferred by three days to give time for the organisers to complete the arrangements, many of the stalls being put up by government departments and traders remained incomplete on Thursday. Work was still underway and the stalls were expected to be ready within a day or two.

Navigating a tricky gorge, treading across a frozen river and setting foot on a sleepy town buried ten feet under snow- though that may sound straight out of a adventure classic, it is what the winter expedition undertaken by the city-based Science and Adventure Club proposes to do during its 16-day trek kicking off on Saturday.

A nine-member squad including four trekkers from Tiruchi would undertake The ‘Chadar trail' graded as an extreme trek due to the timing and terrain involved. The trekkers would traverse the Valley of Zanskar (Jammu and Kashmir) sheltered by the Great Himalayan Ranges in the South and the Ladakh and Eastern Karakoram Ranges in the north.

The expedition is made up of an eclectic set- ace mountaineer, novices, wildlife photographers and a medical practitioner. Members from Tiruchi include ace trekking couple Ramanan and Vrinda Ramanan, M.P.Saravanan, a doctor with knowledge of high altitude medicine and debutant Mahesh Kanna. Rajeev Sharma, Director, Western Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, Manali, conservationist and wildlife photographer Ramnath Chandrashekar from Chennai, Surendar Soinik and Soinik from New Delhi and Rahul Ogra from Manali comprise the rest of the team.

After careful preparation, the team is all geared up for an exciting expedition with Zanskar touted to be a Shangri-La of sorts according to local legends. “The terrain and the climate are what would make the trek challenging,” says Vrinda Ramanan in anticipation. “We would be walking across a frozen river used as a traditional passage in winter when mountain passes are blocked. The trek might involve detours and rock climbing with the whole area being snowed up.” Temperatures are expected to fall below -30 to -35 degree C.

The team would leave Chennai for Delhi on January 14 and fly to Leh. The trek would commence at Chilling, accessible from Leh by jeep. Journeying to Pidomo across the frozen river, the team would then proceed to Padum, the principal township of Zanskar and make their way back to Chilling. The expedition is expected to wind up on February 8.

Collector Jayashree Muralidharan flagged off the team at the Collectorate today and wished the members bon voyage.

There are number of movies filmed in Chennai and Madurai every year. But the average Tiruchiite is lucky if he catches a few glimpses of the city on celluloid.

One of 2011’s biggest hits that struck a chord with many a film buff was the poignant ‘Engeyum Eppodhum’. This critically acclaimed feature had Tiruchi written all over it by weaving the city’s prominent locations into the narrative. In the last decade, both commercial blockbusters and their critical cousins have employed the city either as a characteristic feature or a suitable backdrop to visualise their tale. Here’s many more such cinematic avatars!

Song: ‘Theradi Veethiyil’

Movie: Run (2002)

The Tiruchi factor: Though set in Chennai, the opening scenes of the blockbuster that gave Madhavan a makeover from chocolate boy to action hero were filmed in Srirangam, from where the protagonist hailed. This opening song like the movie was a runaway success.

Celluloid moment: The song kicking off with Madhavan and pals running on the Cauvery bridge and through the streets of Srirangam not only symbolized the title of the movie but was a sign of things to come - there was a lot of ‘running in the movie if you remember! A sensational hit a decade back, Srirangam decked up in festivities is the theme of the song featuring temple gopurams, traditional agraharam houses and flower stalls characteristic of the place. With young damsels clad in half–sarees, sporting ‘malli poo’ and wheeling away bicycles, director Lingusamy proved that folksy numbers can turn chartbusters without semi-clad women.

Song: Maasama Aaru Masama

Movie: Engeyum Eppodhum (2011)

The Tiruchi factor: The movie oscillates between Chennai and Tiruchi while capturing two love stories and touching upon lives of dozens of passengers journeying on two buses between the two cities. With three songs set in the city, this one where Jai confesses his feelings to Anjali after a six month hide-and-seek affair, brings alive life in the old part of the city.

Celluloid moments: The rocky outcrop that lords over the city is captured in various angles in the song. Watch Jai trot through the streets and lanes around Rockfort, shrugging his shoulders at school kids, traffic policemen and sundry shoppers. A song canned in the streets, brightly painted houses, nondescript roadside shops and vantage commercial points are highlights of the song. The hero rollicking on mounds of onions in the vengayam mandi at Gandhi market and ambling through the West Bouleavard Street are well-shot scenes in much frequented places.

Song: Mazhaiye Mazhaiye

Movie: Eeram(2009)

The Tiruchi factor: This sleeper hit of a thriller set in Chennai, evoked images of the city in the protagonist’s flashback. A short lived romance is captured vividly through telling visuals set in Srirangam and Thiruvanaikoil.

Celluloid moments: Rain and romance have always made for a heady combination. Perhaps one of the best rain songs in recent times, ‘Mazhaiye mazhaiye’ celebrates the enigmatic Aadhi and the demure Sindhu Menon

Fall in love: The actress dancing on the terrace with raindrops splattering across her face while the Srirangam temple looms behind is a scene-stealer. A stroll on the Cauvery bridge, near the St. Joseph’s College church add to the visual poetry of the song

Song: Devathaye Vaa

Movie: Malaikottai(2007)

Tiruchi factor: No guesses for the location site of this movie. An action packed entertainer, the film raked in the moolah with the story of one man cleansing Tiruchi city of goons and baddies.

Celluloid moments: A lilting number, the song opens with a bike ride at the Upper Anicut or Mukkombu as it is known. Shots of the Mainguard gate and popular shopping complex featured in the song. The couple in conversation are filmed in the backdrop of the Srirangam temple. The Cauvery bridge as a favourite nightspot for locals with ‘sundal’ and ‘bhel puri’ vendors selling their wares to walkers and young people figure in the song.

Song: Enna Enna Aagiraen

Movie: Kadhal Solla Vandhen (2010)

Tiruchi factor: The film was shot in Perambalur and Tiruchi and almost all songs were filmed here.

Celluliod moments: A male solo, the song like the one above is yet another portrayal of the male lead falling in love with the woman of his dreams as he runs into her in various places across the city. Popular commercial and well-known streets apart, a segment filmed on the terrace in the heart of the city provides aerial view of Tiruchi’s skyline. Scenes around Mukkombu and the Cauvery bridge complete the song.

Catch glimpses of the city in the Ajit-Trisha starrer ‘Kireedam’ and two Dhanush starrers, ‘Thiruda Thiruda’ and Vengai. The ‘Gala gala’ song from another 2011 hot movie ‘Ko’ threaded prominent locations with those in Chennai and Madurai.

TOP FILM LOCATIONS:

Rockfort: The majestic rocky outcrop is often all it takes to let movie audiences know when the story moves to Tiruchi.

Srirangam Temple: Movies would never tire of showcasing the majesty of the world’s largest functioning temple from the many gopurams to the wall inscriptions. A favourite establishing shot is the magnificent Rajagopuram.

Jambukeshwarar Temple, Thiruvanaikoil: Cameras has feasted upon beautiful pillars and sculptures here, many a time.

Cauvery bridge: The Marina beach of Tiruchi, this bridge that connects the island of Srirangam with Tiruchi mainland is one of the most popular hangouts for youth and families. Needless to say the titanic pipes double up as an ideal spot for lover’s tryst on the silver screen.

Our lady of Lourdes Church: The steeple of the stately St.Joseph’s College church said to be a replica of the famed Lourdes church is something our cameras can hardly resist.

Upper Anicut or Mukkombu: Movies set in the city hardly fail to cash in on the only popular picnic spot in a city starved of entertainment .

Kollidam: Water always look good on screen. The river banks, marshes and gushing water have not been left untouched by the lens.

Ever wondered how many types of rice are cultivated in farming lands around the city? Seen a magnified model of the Hepatitis B virus? Tried to figure out how the underground drainage system of the city works? Observed how a bomb is diffused?

Questions that you might have spared a thought for that eventually fell on the wayside get answered at the Government Exhibition at Vestry School grounds here. Besides an insight into proposed projects, existing schemes and past achievements, you may learn to distinguish between manifold pulses, inhale bottled natural oils of lavender and rosemary, and taste banana pickle! That is if you manage to step safely across the creaky planks, avoid the hanging wires and ignore stalls-still-in-the-making.

While certain departments have capitalised on the opportunity of the span of 45 days to enlighten the public by packaging essential information interestingly, amateurish projects, haphazardly-arranged models and dimly lit interiors are a regular feature in other stalls. Designed like a police station replete with a door frame metal detector through which visitors pass, the police department is one of the few stalls abuzz with activity throwing up interesting information right from crime detection using finger print patterns, a display of rifles of various specifications and a live feeds from traffic monitoring system.

The health department provides services like blood grouping and blood pressure check, apart from promoting campaigns promoting breastfeeding, saving the girl child, and hand washing.

Though lifestyle diseases do not find much prominence here, information on transmission of infectious diseases like leptosperosis, malaria and tuberculosis juxtapose with details on vasectomy procedures, neo-natal care and HIV-AIDS.

The forest and agriculture departments too offer a learning experience through models right from stuffed tigers, array of oils from medicinal plants, pulses neatly grouped to depict the Srirangam Rajagopuram image, information on harvesting techniques and equipment and samples of putting the banana to edible use- jam, pickle and health drinks.

Enlarged photographs are the mainstay of the Public Works and Tourism departments. The city corporation stall boasting of an attractive façade lets masses get acquainted with projects on the pipeline including a science park, link road between Lawsons Road and Anna Nagar and new facility at Srirangam Hospital. The ‘go green' theme is pronounced here.

The prime beneficiaries of the fair are the self-help groups glad of the opportunity to showcase their wares like home-made concoctions, costume jewellery and jute bags to a wider audience.

Private stalls selling artificial jewellery, colourful clothes and bags punctuate the department stalls. Eateries and amusement rides keep kids entertained.

Tamers did precious little to match the ferocity of the bulls at the ‘Jallikattu' in Suriyur village, conducted as part of the Pongal festivities, on Monday.

Apparently, bulls from different parts of the district and nearby areas including Kottapattu, Khajamalai, Thuvakudi, Lalgudi, Kambarasanpettai, and Keeranur, had a field day in the ring. Not all bulls dodged the tamers by giving them a slip. A good number confronted the tamers evoking applause from several hundreds of onlookers.

But there was not a single tamer to display the valour of taking the bulls by their horns.

Performance just meant clinging on to the humps for a while. Of course, those found pulling the tails were censured.

The prizes varied from Rs. 200 to Rs. 5,000 in cash. Some of the bull owners had interesting prizes such as lambs and mobile phones to offer.

Interestingly though, size of the bulls was hardly a determiner of their boldness. Almost all the bulls that challenged the tamers were mid-sized ones that were obviously primed to perform.

Some of the bulls made their presence commanding.

Huge turnout

The crowd turnout was huge and the police had a tough time reining them in. People were on rooftops, treetops and almost every vantage spot around.

At the end, there were numerous disappointed faces among the crowd.

But for three persons who sustained minor injuries, the event went off peacefully.

The district administration had reasons to feel relieved with the arrangements made by the organisers to ensure that there is no threat from the bulls to the onlookers. While keeping the tradition alive, it is also important that human lives are protected, said Collector Jayashree Muralidharan.

The Collector and the Superintendent of Police Lalitha Lakshmi sat through the entire show from 10.45 a.m. to 3.15 p.m. to make sure that the supervising machinery does not let loose its guard till the end.

They were accompanied by representatives of Animal Welfare Board of India Banima, Ramesh and Manoj Kumar. Tiruchi MP P. Kumar and Tiruverumbur MLA S. Senthil Kumar were among the others who watched the proceedings from the specially erected dais.

Thorough checks were conducted on the bulls and of the 213 cows that were brought for participation, nine were disqualified for not conforming to norms. Over 50 bulls could not participate as the show had to be wound up within the stipulated time.

Only 110 of the 150 registered tamers turned up. Tamers were registered after a thorough check of their physical conditions beforehand.

Police presence was overwhelming.

Hundreds of police personnel functioned under the direct supervision of one Additional SP, seven DSPs, and 14 Inspectors. Deputy Inspector General, Tiruchi Range, A. Amal Raj, visited the venue.

Cancellation of jallikattu at Palakurichi near Valanadu on Tuesday was a bitter pill to swallow for people in several surrounding villages.

The villagers had mobilised Rs.5 lakh as caution deposit as stipulated by the State government under the Tamil Nadu Regulation of Jallikattu Act 2009, in accordance with the Supreme Court guidelines. There were more sponsors this time to back the organisers financially and the amount was paid beforehand.

But time was a constraint. According to Anbuselvam, president of Palakurichi panchayat two days were just not enough to erect the galleries and put in place the mandated precautionary measures to safeguard the lives of bulls and spectators. For, this year's event is being conducted under the watchful eyes of representatives of Animal Welfare Board of India.

Palakurichi is one among the three places in the district where jallikattu was permitted this year. The bull-taming event connected to Pongal festival got over at Periya Suriyur on Monday, and the jallikattu at Karungalam is slated for January 28. Lalgudi, Koothaipar, Musiri and Anbil are among the other places where the traditional event is usually conducted. But, Palakurichi has always been the place where a large number of people converge.

Not less than 50,000 people usually turn up from Tiruchi and neighbouring districts to witness the event, say the organisers.

According to Mr. Anbuselvam, unlike in the case of other places, the arena being huge in Palakurichi, it was difficult to mobilize a large number of workers during the festival season for carrying out works of double-barricading and fencing. However, he acknowledged that they were not adequately prepared to meet the stringent guidelines from the courts. While accepting that the venue was large-sized, District Collector Jayashree Muralidharan felt that the safety measures could have been put in place there in a much better way over two days, referring to the quick response by the organisers at Periya Suriyur. Availability of more space at Palakurichi was more advantageous for crowd control, she explained.

The venue, also called ‘Ponnar Shankar Thidal' has a historical significance. It was the hunting ground for the twin brothers Ponnar and Shankar, who were chieftains in medieval Tamil Nadu. Palakurichi Jallikattu is as much famed as the ones in Alanganallur and Palamedu in Madurai district for the rural populace. The only occasion that attracts people from the region settled elsewhere is jallikattu, and hence the disappointment, Mr. Anbuselvam said.

Bordered on the front by the Cauvery, flanked on either side by paddy fields and centred around an ancient Shiva temple- the village Pazhuvur, provided the ideal backdrop to expose over 50 international tourists to Tamil culture and lifestyle, here on Tuesday.

Taking part in the Pongal celebration organised by Department of Tourism, the foreigners witnessed a kaleidoscope of activities that ranged from the traditional welcome with aarthi , bullock cart rides through lanes coloured by intricate kolams , temple visits and agraharam walkthroughs and a tasting of their first ever servings of pongal.

Collector Jayashree Muralidharan, who presided over the celebrations, accompanied the tourists on the bullock cart, took part in the Pongal making ceremony and later explained the various customs behind the four-day festival, which is unique to Tamil Nadu.

Calling it the right time for a tourist in the State, the Collector said that the Pongal festival was a thanksgiving of sorts to the five elements. “Jallikattu, a bull taming sport comparable to Spain's bullfight is a unique feature of this festival, which is celebrated with great pride and joy by Tamils everywhere,” she said.

While some of the tourists seemed bewildered and maybe even a little overwhelmed by the festivities, there were many who joined in with the traditional dancers and performers clearly unable to resist the fast-paced drum beats. With a riot of colours coming to life with every movement of the artistes, tourists from countries like Italy, the Netherlands, France, Austria and England witnessed the performance of folk arts like silambattam, karagattam, kavadiattam, mayilattam, oyilattam, thappattam, puliyattam and surul kathi veechu.

Commenting on their experience, the visitors said they were thoroughly impressed with the hospitality extended to them throughout. “The welcome, the display of culture and art forms and beautiful temple architecture are some of my most memorable takeaways,” said Serge Gloanec from France. As someone who has been visiting the city regularly for the past 17 years to work with disabled children, Jacques Verfaille says he is no longer surprised by the country and its customs. “I have been to other parts of India, but to me Tamil Nadu is one of the best states in the country and the food is simply the very best here,” he told the cheering crowd of locals.

Three women from the village were also adjudged winners in the kolam drawing competition conducted as part of the celebrations.

With the celebratory mood of Pongal wrapping up, absence of tourist spots and parks for families to get together has always stood out like a sore thumb in the entertainment-starved city.

The absence is felt more on days like Kaanum Pongal, when people prefer to go on outings with their family to enjoy the occasion.

Mukkombu, the Upper Anicut, constructed across the Cauvery and Coleroon is the lone picnic spot near the city, apart from Kallanai, the Grand Anicut, in the neighbouring Thanjavur district.

Families thronged Mukkombu since morning on Tuesday to spend time at amusement park and children's garden. Puliyancholai, another picnic spot, also on the banks of the Cauvery, witnessed arrival of many visitors. People also visited and offered worship in the Srirangam, Tiruvanaikovil and Samayapuram temple.Police had made elaborate security arrangements to ensure safety at Mukkombu .

Puliyancholai is not on the banks of River Cauvery. It is located on the foot hills of Kolli Hills. It has a stream which flows from Aagaya Gangai Falls of Kolli hills. One cannot go by vehicle rather can go only by walk. Its a beautiful mountain range which also leads the way to kolli hills (not prime route). The bark of a tree embodying the figure of a man extending a beggar's bowl is the ultimate cry of creation against destruction. A man seeking refuge under an umbrella in the midst of stumps of felled trees portrays the irony of seeking shade after annihilating its natural source. The final image of a globe perched on a hand with fingers shaped like branches are a reminder that redemption is yet possible through restoration.

The thematic exhibition titled ‘Save the earth' at the Government Museum by artist Tamizharasan evokes images of destruction, despair and hope through paintings that depict a confluence of man and nature.

The expo is part of a State-wide initiative by the artist from Mannampadi village in Cuddalore district to mobilise youth to take up the cudgels for environment conservation.

Right from a glimpse of pristine nature in the beginning of time to a terrifying insight into futuristic world, the 50 paintings done in acrylic colours are both a warning and an appeal.

Mr.Tamizharasan tells the story through one-day exhibition of paintings organised for school and college students in every district. An old couple marooned on a miniscule piece of land engulfed by the sea visualises the consequences we have triggered in the form of global warming. A monkey lying aback with blood oozing highlights the upsetting of ecological balance.

Tamizharasan does not stop with depicting the horrors of atomic warfare and water pollution, he seeks a panacea in the form of images of well ventilated rooms to save electricity and possibilities of tapping into wind energy.

Going beyond his role as an artist, Mr.Tamizharasan educates students on how seemingly inconsequential actions have greater ramifications. “People are not aware that mindless dumping of electronic waste like changing cell phones frequently spin off a vicious cycle. Instead of talking about sapling plantation, I tell students on the role played by trees in bearing the brunt of Cyclone Thane,” he explains.

The initiative is funded through commercial portraits and landscapes he does throughout the year. Speaking of the response from students, he says, “A student from Nagapattinam whose father sells wood wrote back saying he would convince his father to stop felling of trees. I derive satisfaction from the fact that at least 300 people of the 3000 I address in every institution may take it seriously while a few may even act upon it.”

The expo kicked off on January 7 from Puducherry and would wind up on February 29 in Chennai.

It was another exciting moment within a month for bullfighters to prove their valour by taming the furious bulls, which were lined up as part of the jallikattu event in Karunkulam village near Manapparai in Trichy. However, 34 persons suffered injuries during the event which was conducted on Sunday.

On January 16, jallikattu was held in Periya Sooriyur in Trichy district by strictly adhering to the guidelines laid down by the Madras High Court. Similarly, Sunday's event was also held with safety measures taken by the village committee to ensure the safety of the bulls, bull tamers and the audience.

The Madras High Court had given permission to conduct the jallikattu in three places - Periya Sooriyur, Karungulam and Palakurichi in Trichy district on or before January 30. Except Palakurichi, the jallikattu events were held in rest of the two places, said T Rajesh, state co-ordinator, Jallikattu Pathukappu Sangam, Trichy.

About 400 bulls from across Tamil Nadu in particular from Madurai, Dindigul, Theni, Cumbum, Sivaganga, Pudukottai, Salem, Perambalur and Trichy lined up to participate in the tournament. All the bulls underwent medical check-up, which was performed by the veterinary doctors, before being let in the arena. Nearly 20 bulls were refused entry on medical grounds, while 40 bulls could not participate as the event concluded at 3.30pm.

As per the guidelines, the names of the bull tamers had to be registered before getting into the double-barricaded ground. The 280 registered bullfighters tried to prove their mettle against the bulls. All of them were attired in blue T-shirts provided by the village committee. As many as 34 persons, including bull tamers and the audience, who witnessed the action suffered minor injuries. Medical treatment was provided on-the-spot as a 50-member medical team was on standby near the jallikattu venue.

District collector Jayashree Muralidharan and superintendent of police R Lalitha Lakshmi were present during the conduct of the event.

Forty-six persons, including five bull tamers, sustained injuries at a ‘jallikattu' held at Karungulam near Manapparai in Tiruchi district on Sunday.

The ‘jallikattu' was held amidst unprecedented security and strict supervision by district officials on the lines of the guidelines given by the Supreme Court and the Madras High Court. The event started at 10 a.m. and lasted about five-and-a-half hours with 346 bulls being let out into the arena one at a time. The ‘jallikattu,' only the second to be held in the district this year, attracted thousands of spectators from Tiruchi and neighbouring districts.

The event held in front of the St. Antony's Church in the village, following the annual Pongal festival, also symbolised the synthesis of the traditional sport with local custom. “The entire event is organised with contributions from Catholics in the village. We had spent about Rs.10 lakh for the event and thankfully it passed off without any untoward incident,” said Enock, former panchayat president and one of the organisers.

Around 370 bulls were registered for the event but 24 of them were rejected on various grounds after screening by special teams of veterinary doctors. Of the nearly, 250 registered bull tamers some were refused permission after medical tests while a few others failed to turn up.

Ultimately, 214 participated in the event, said Collector Jayashree Muralidharan, who along with R. Lalitha Lakshmi, Superintendent of Police, Tiruchi, and K. Sampath, Revenue Divisional Officer, Tiruchi, supervised the event.

Except two youths, one with injuries in the collar bone and other in the thigh, all the others were treated at medical camps set up near the venue. Officials said most of them had sustained abrasions and minor injuries. The two seriously injured youth were referred to the Government Hospital at Manapparai.

While the event itself was well regulated inside the arena with eight-feet high bamboo barricades, many of the injured were those at the overcrowded “collection points” towards the end, where bull owners and spectators had gathered in large numbers. A 13-year-old boy was among the injured in the melee at this spot. A strong contingent of about 420 police personnel were deployed for security.

District officials heaved a sigh of relief as both the ‘jallikattu' events were held without any major mishap.

Permission was granted for ‘jallikattu' in Suriyur, Palakurichi and Karungulam in the district this year. While the ‘jallikattu' at Suriyur was held as part of the Pongal festival, the Palakurichi event was cancelled after the organisers withdrew citing inability to erect barricades and spectator galleries on time.

It is a positive sign that many students and youngsters across the state are enthusiastically getting into Silambattam training, not only with the aim of being experts in the art form, but also to gain employment using certificates obtained in district and state-level tournaments.

Silambattam, a renowned Tamil martial art form was in vogue during various phases of the region's history. Even though it was sidelined due to the impact of other martial arts from foreign countries, the order of the Tamil Nadu government in 2009 declaring knowers of Silambattam eligible for admission to engineering and medical colleges under sports quota has come as a shot in the arm for the sport.

Since then, the art form has been witnessing an increasing number of students from all age groups ranging from seven. All of them have to get trained from masters in private Silambattam training centres. As far as Trichy district is concerned, about 30 such centres have been receiving an overwhelming response from students.

M Victor Kuzhandhairaj (66), a retired government employee who has expertise in Silambattam from the age of 14, told TOI that he has been serving as tournament director for Silambattam in the Tamil Nadu Silambattam Association and as technical director in the Tiruchirappalli District Silambattam Association. In addition to that, he has been running training centres called Rose Dojo Silambattam Academy in Madurai, Trichy, Ariyalur, Jayamkondam, Dalmiapuram, Theni, Salem and Chennai.

It is a passion inherited from their forefathers who were also masters in the art form. The name Silambattam is commonly used by all but it is also called as 'Kuchi Vilaiyattu', 'Vastha', 'Thadi Varisai' and 'Thadi Vilaiyattu'. And, the art has a lot of varieties such as 'Kuravanji, Thulukkanam, Veera Kurunji, Maravan Kurunji, Kallapathu, Nagapasam, Panaiyeri Mallan, Nenjurutti' and 'Hanumar Pandhanam', he explained.

Prior to getting into the course, the masters focus on building the physique of the student. The students undergo training in the art. There is no time duration for the course as it depends on interest shown and skills. Every team will participate in district and state-level tournaments where they will be awarded certificates, said M K Madhanlal, secretary of the Tiruchirappalli District Silambattam Association.

Madhanlal also suggested that in order to make the art form familiar with the people, the government should include it under sports quota for government employment as well.

You know you've left the city when yellow and black signboards bear names like Manachanallur, Pulivalam, Pagalavadi and Thuraiyur; when tree trunks marked by the state highway number, line up like sentries on either side of the road and when the carpets of cultivated green roll out seamlessly at the periphery of your eyes. As the road narrowed like a funnel that ended at the forest checkpost, the wind lashing my face shed a few degrees of heat, while the sun squeezed through the thick canopy to dapple the road ahead. Bound towards the reserve forests of Pachaimalai near Tiruchi, I was being escorted by the forest department to the Yettu Erumaipalli falls.

I wondered sitting in the jeep what undiscovered looked like: according to M. Pichai, Assistant Conservator of Forests (who was accompanying me), the falls are unknown to even people living at the foothills of Pachaimalai. “The Malayali Gounder Tribe living here are the only ones who know about it,” he tells me. The thrill of being let in on a secret mounted as the jeep manoeuvred 15 sharp hairpin bends right at the beginning of the climb. The landscape rose beside us to stony heights before falling on the other side into the green depths we were leaving behind.

A dusty view point jutted out of the hillside to dutifully expose a facet of the rolling panorama you could capture for memory. The butterflies darted purposefully between flowering shrubs on the edges and the tapioca grown in abundance swayed lazily in conversation with the now chilly wind. Throughout the climb, the road was so narrow that I wondered if our jeep would have to retrace its path in reverse gear, to make space for an oncoming vehicle.

Encountering no vehicle from the opposite direction, we drove past men squatted on their haunches outside a stone building. Seated beneath its broken glass windows, their towel-turbaned heads turned to catch a glimpse of those within the jeep. The signboard ahead announced we had reached Top Sengattupatti, clearly the top of this 1,000 m high hill.

Our destination was about eight kilometers from the Forest Guest House in Top Sengattupatti. On the way is a dilapidated house, which Mr. Pichai says was the guest house built and used by the Britishers. The space outside the old guest house seems to be lit by sunlight that looked like it had rubbed off some green from the forest cover above, making it seem surreal. The spot has been featured in Tamil movies, I'm told.

The closest hamlets to the Yettu Erumaipalli falls are Periyamangalam and Chinnamangalam and the only signs of human occupation were the neatly cut out step field with their own nel kurudus (mud huts that store farm produce), some clothes drying on a bush and two pigs left bound by someone, probably for a feast.

We were greeted by two bikes at the end of the incline beyond which lay the falls. Somebody's already here, said the local forest ranger who had hopped on to the jeep at Top Sengattupatti. If water falling from a height fell without a sound, this spot would have evaded discovery forever, I thought to myself while I looked around. From where we stood, the sound of water gushing downwards, and the thin mist before us were the only clues.

Taking the lead, Mr. Pichai and the forest ranger disappeared through a small tunnel like opening in the outgrowth. Looking down at the path dotted by rounded boulders of all sizes, I was reminded of my adventure trip in school. I stepped on to the rocks gingerly, laughing nervously every time I went off balance. The passage led to a clearing that opened out on both sides to show where the water came from and where it began falling at a steep incline. Seated there on a large boulder were two men (probably from the neighbouring villages) who looked slightly bewildered by our crowd. They were steaming some root vegetable over a campfire for their snack.

Undisturbed moss coated the rocks making them slippery, while the water was coldly defiant of the scorching sun. A spot on the banks bore colours probably from the horns of the Pongal-painted cows that were washed there that morning and the birds chirped loudly, excited by the sudden increase in human voices. Maybe they weren't too happy about the discovery.

Trimming nails, using a handkerchief while coughing, and washing hands before and after every meal; simple practices that often fall by the wayside but can make a big difference in terms of illness and health. Hygiene is not preached but practiced was the premise for inauguration of the Tiruchi chapter of the Little Drops at Alpha Matriculation School in the city.

Little Drops, a brainchild of the 1955 batch of the Stanley Medical College, is a social responsibility initiative that envisages youth as ambassadors for health and hygiene in schools. With hygiene not consciously incorporated in school curriculum, the project aims at instilling a civic sense in students. “It is not awareness of healthy practices that is lacking, but implementation. We want to bridge the gap between knowledge and practice, between knowing something and doing it,” says Dr.Tholkappian, coordinator.

The programme gives a head start to preventive healthcare by instilling conventional but oft-forgotten practices and covering various aspects of hygiene including domestic, personal, environmental and sexual hygiene. “Mere directions would amount to preaching. By helping students understand the significance of healthy practices and urging them to repeat them, we ensure practices are entrenched and become habits,” Varadarajan, a team member.

Earlier inaugurating the chapter, M.Asick Meera, deputy mayor, said the Corporation also involved students in creating awareness of banning plastic. Around 50 students from 10 city schools participated in the orientation programme. While government schools requiring approval from authorities are restrained from participation, private schools are not too willing to take part.

Tiruchi is the first chapter of ‘Little Drops' outside Chennai. The pilot project, anchored by Dr.Ravindranath, has roped in 35 schools in Ambattur in the first phase and 15 schools in Avadi in the second. Citing the example of Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Ambattur, Dr.Varadarajan says changes in practices of students are visible in the school after five years of monitoring. By educating students on the effects of passive smoking, the programme also reaches out to parents.

The Forest Department pavilion at the Government trade fair, currently underway in the city, is home to a collection of wild animal bones, art work by the tribals of Pachaimalai, and a variety of forest plants, a few of which are rare species.

Strictly conserved

Medicinal in nature, these rare species are being strictly conserved in select Medicinal Plants Conservation Areas (MPCAs) in the State, said I.Anwardeen, District Forest Officer, who added that species of ethno-botanical importance have been in conservation ever since the Tamil Nadu Afforestation Project began in 1997.

“The Forest Department, besides banning the collection of medicinal plants for commercial purposes in reserved forests, has also augmented the population of specific plants that are at the endangered stage. The district in particular has no endangered species,” he said, outlining the efforts of the department.

Stressing on the importance of holistic conservation of forests, Mr. Anwardeen said that targeted efforts to conserve specific species were not possible as they might disturb the ecological link in the forest system.

Western ghats

The following are three endangered species, whose natural habitat is the Western Ghats: Saraca Asoca-commonly known as Ashoka; Desmodium Gyrans- commonly known as Thozhukani or telegraph plants; Rauwolfia Serpentina- commonly known as Sarpagandha or Indian snake root.

It is poetry in stone. The entire roof of the outer mandapam has been converted into a huge canvas with a magnificent pond brimming with life and brilliantly portrays three birds, a man and even an elephant in addition to a school fish.

This and many frescos that greet the onlookers and the rock-cave which are part of Sittanavasal near Tiruchy would soon be put on the global tourism map.

Though the spot attracts visitors – including a good number from abroad annually, the tourism authorities have decided to showcase the ancient Indian art to lure more visitors.

The state government has proposed to take up tourism development works at Sittanavasal at a cost of Rs 6.9 crore soon.

The government had already spent Rs 1 crore in taking up development work, particularly in restoring the frescos, which were drawn using natural dyes. A team of officials recently undertook a visit to the spot to study the possibilities of promoting the site.

Accordingly, the officials have formulated a project for `6.9 crore and submitted them to the tourism department for approval.

According to sources, it has been planned to create wayside amenities for the benefit of the tourists.

“Though it is located about 58 km from Tiruchy, there are not many trained guides who could explain the history or the important aspects of Sittanavasal,” says Aravind Kumar of Chennai.

“A first-time visitor is likely to miss the minute details of the frescos, several of them belong to the 9th century Pandyan period and include exquisite details of animals, fish, ducks, people gathering lotuses from a pond and two dancing figures,” says a tour operator.

With efforts to restore a vintage railway fire engine here and bring it back to working condition proving unsuccessful, the heritage vehicle is set to be displayed as a showpiece yet again.

The over 75-year-old self-propelled mobile fire fighting vehicle supplied to the then Mysore Railways by M/s Dennis Brothers Limited, England in 1931, was preserved as a heritage piece inside the Railway Protection Force (RPF) Zonal Training Centre at Khajamalai here after it was withdrawn from active service years ago.

As the ‘open type' fire engine was lying unused for several years, the Railway Board desired to restore it and run as a vintage vehicle. Consequently, the assistance of the staff of Lallaguda railway workshop in Secunderabad was solicited in getting the fire engine restored as they were expert in handling vintage vehicles.

A team of supervisors from the Lallaguda railway workshop inspected the vintage fire engine kept at the RPF Zonal Training Centre a few years ago to ascertain the condition of the vehicle.

Subsequently, it was transported by road to the Lallaguda workshop in a bid to bring it back to working condition.

But since the efforts to restore the vintage vehicle and make it road-worthy has proved unsuccessful, the fire engine was sent back to the RPF Zonal Training Centre here recently. Some of the parts required for its repair were not available in the market, it is said.

RPF officials say the fire engine would once again be displayed as a showpiece-this time at the entrance of the sprawling training centre to enable public have a glimpse of the vintage vehicle.

The petrol-driven vehicle, which could accommodate nine fire fighters besides a driver cum pump operator, has inbuilt lockers in which fire fighting equipment such as delivery hoses, branch pipes and suction hose used to be stowed.

The vehicle was also equipped with a Hose Real Hose to tackle initial fires and fires involving saw dust and dry leaves.

It was designed as ‘open type' to enable fire fighters jump out immediately upon reaching the fire spot and to put out fire quickly.

Buildrock, the annual exhibition on construction materials hosted by the Tiruchi centre of the Builders Association of India (BAI), opened in the city on Wednesday showcasing a range of products for the construction industry and individuals setting forth to build their homes.

This year's edition features about 80 stalls from manufacturers, dealers, and real estate promoters.

For those planning to construct houses, a visit to the exhibition could provide an overview on the latest products from the industry including modular kitchens, construction chemicals, PVC windows and doors, hollow blocks, electrical and bath fittings, sanitary ware, blinds, and other products for interior decoration.

Given the severe power shortage faced by the State, stalls on inverters and generators occupy a prominent place. Products on alternative energy sources such as solar water heaters are also on display.

The five-day exhibition was declared open by A.K.Youssouf, former national president, BAI, in the presence of M.V.G.Jawahar, chairman, M.Sivakumar, secretary, V.Manjunath, past chairman, BAI, Tiruchi.

The exhibition at Makkal Mandram in Thillai Nagar will be open from 3.30 p.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and from 10 am. to 9 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Though the annual event is usually organised in December, this year the exhibition opens a couple of months behind schedule owing to the tragic death of a group of office bearers and members of BAI in an accident in Nepal a few months ago.

A river notorious for extreme turbulence spends one month every year in frozen submission to the elements around it — the harshest of winters and the towering mountains of Ladakh through which it reaches the Indus. Frozen throughout January and February, the Zanskar River is a snow-white blanket that winds a length of 160 kilometres, recently popular as the Chadar Trail.

Meet J. Ramanan, Vrinda Ramanan, Saravanan, Mahesh Khanna and K. Ramnath Chandrasekhar from the Trichy Science and Adventure Club, who have recently returned from Zanskar as the first group from the State to attempt this trek, a trail until now explored by foreigners and just a handful of Indians.

“The Chadar lets you see the river's perspective, while it flows beneath you with a pulsating presence,” says Ramanan, who founded the club along with his wife Vrinda. For the couple, formally trained in mountaineering, this was their 30th Himalayan expedition. However, it was a debut trek over the Chadar for the entire group, joined by five more trekkers from around the country.

“For centuries, Zanskaris have been crossing the frozen trail by foot for trade and in case of emergencies,” says Vrinda, adding that most of them leave their villages when the winter is at its peak. “With the trail becoming popular, a few of the locals now stay behind to work as guides and support staff for trekking groups.”

Mahesh talks about the route they took. “We spent two days at Leh to acclimatise ourselves to the altitude and climate. We drove to Chilling, walked to Tilat Do and the next day we began our trek.” The group stopped at Markala, Trips Cave and other points before encountering their most anxious moment at Nyerak Pullu.

“After we passed a frozen waterfall, we came across the group which had left before us. The trail ahead hadn't frozen fully, making it impossible to walk over,” recalls Ramanan, for whom the unstable ground made it one of the most challenging treks ever. With snow fall quickly following, the trekkers were back on the trail, though they had to be roped up for safety. From the last stop, Tsarak Do, the group drove to Padum, their destination. Says Vrinda, “We reached Padum on January 26 and took part in the Republic Day celebrations there. It was extremely touching.”

On their way back on the Chadar, the group sighted a variety of wildlife endemic to the region. “We spotted the Himalayan magpie, yellow-billed chough, snow wolves, kiangs, chakoris and lammergeier, the biggest among vultures,” says Ramnath. They also came across pug marks of snow leopards and a frozen Himalayan red fox that bore marks from a predator.

Being the only doctor on board, Dr. Saravanan had to ensure that everyone was well during the trek. “Though we experienced mountain sickness initially, we were all right throughout as we had extremely effective gear and were prepared both mentally and physically,” he says. Generally, in conditions as harsh as this, people can get affected by hypothermia, frostbite and severe sunburns.

Completing the trek two days ahead of schedule, the group visited several monasteries and were taken to the homes of the locals. “With sunshine being such a luxury in their simple lives, the Zanskaris have utilised solar energy in some very interesting ways we all could emulate,” says Vrinda.

For Ramanan, it is a once in a lifetime experience: “It's not a trek that can be done more than once. The river freezes only for a month, you need to be extremely fit and the trek requires human help throughout because mules cannot walk on the ice.” Besides, he adds, the trek can cost up to Rs 1 lakh per head to organise.

When canons were let loose, liquefied substance filled in canisters cascaded down, and the powder set off an explosion on Thursday morning, the city unleashed its colourful instinct. And within a fraction of second the virus of Holi fever spread with people from different echelons of society surging forward and making a splash of happiness and merriment.

Many flied off tangent; some pranced around while a few geared up for a big bash as the comrades of Sindhi Panchayat Association, Gujurati Samaj and Jaipur Samaj embarked on a colour-dabbing spree at Ramachandrapuram, Sastri Road. Exchange of wish and sweets coupled with song competition and cracking of jokes whipped up euphoria.

“This is the time when rivals and competitors sink their differences and embrace each other leave alone friends and relatives. Though the origination of Holi traces back to some places in north India, this is a century-old practice in Tiruchi,” says Ramesh Khanna, president, Sindhi Panchayat Association, and the organiser of the event.

Nearly, 150 to 170 members belonging to over 50 families grabbed their share of celebration. This large congregation strived hard not to dissipate the excitement despite the commencement of public exams and Thursday not being a holiday. The largest beneficiaries are the women and children who got a break from their treadmill of daily chores.

The star attraction of the event was the Tamil dish. “We use to stick to our food habit every day. But on this auspicious occasion there has to be something different to jazz up the experience and make it special. The relish of the Tamil food is palpable on every face,” said, Deepak Shah, president, Gujurati Samaj. After a tireless enjoyment for hours, the members of associations slowly turned their heels towards home, and began preparation for a delicious and cultural evening at Jaipur Bhavan. Similarly, over 150 members belonging to associations such as Odia Samaj and Bengali association celebrated the spring festival at Kailaspuram Club, BHEL. A.V. Krishnan, Executive Director, BHEL, lit the traditional fire. President of Kailaspuram Club, and General Manager, BHEL, K. Ramachandran, Aswini Kumar Panda, secretary, Odia Samaj, were present.

^^After 14 years Cock-Fight in Tiruvanaikkovil.

deepu051993
March 19th, 2012, 10:19 AM
Sunday turned out to provide quite an entertainment for ardent fans at the last day of the two-day cockfight tournament in Thiruvanaikoil, held after a long gap of 14 years in Trichy district.

A large area of a mango farm in Maaniya Mandapam was set up as the battlefield for about 300 cocks reared especially for participating in tournaments. On the first day, about 250 cocks took part in the tournament. They were classified into eight categories depending upon their colour, size, weight etc and a trickle of spectators enthusiastically watched every match in which two cocks aggressively fought to be the victor. In the end, owners of the victorious cocks were handed over prizes.

However, more than the monetary benefit that the cocks bring in through the victory, the sense of pride that their pets bring them is more important, owners said. 25-year-old P Vasudevan of Woraiyur in Trichy whose rooster was a part of Sunday's fight, was inducted into rearing fighting cocks right from his childhood as his father was also interested in the sport. They took extra care in rearing the cocks by feeding them 'badam', 'pista', grams and other nutrient foods, he said.

Generally, there are two types of tournaments in the cock-fighting, Kathikattu (fight with knife) and Vetrukkaal (fight without knife). In this tournament, organizers were strictly instructed by the Madurai bench of the Madras high court not to tie knives to the feet of the cocks as it would endanger the opponent. Taking it into account, they allowed only such roosters which were trained for fighting without knives.

One of the organizers K Sureshkumar of Woraiyur said "Unfortunately, cinema has wrongly portrayed the game as if it was only played for betting. But we are still trying our best to prevent such Tamil traditional games from being jeopardized."

A theatrical adaptation of the famous story, ‘Ben Hur: A Tale of Christ, by Lew Wallace'; performances by the Six Strings and a Truth – the Prayer Cell band and choir; a shadow play; and a human mime constituted the ‘Easter Extravaganza Show' presented recently by the Prayer Cell of National Institute of Technology–Tiruchi.

The extravaganza opened with the theme song ‘God's Not Dead', a Six Strings and a Truth cover of the famous album song of the Christian pop rock band Newsboys, followed by ‘We are One Tonight' and ‘Shadow Proves the Sunshine', popular numbers from the band Switchfoot.

Subsequently, the Prayer Cell Choir presented two harmonious timeless Christian hymns – ‘All Hail the Power of Jesus' Name' and ‘The Old Rugged Cross'.

‘Ben Hur: A Tale of Christ' was a portrayal of the journey of a man from hatred to redemption and forgiveness.

The Shadow Play on Deathbed, a Relient K Switchfoot creation, was a poignant reminder of what the regrets and reminiscence that would float in a dying man's mind and the importance of life's choices at crucial crossroads.

The human mime portrayed the redemption story and was illustrative of what love is.

R. Ragunathan, founder trustee of the Christava Brahmana Seva Samithi, was the guest speaker.

The founder president and pastor of Prarthanalaya, delivered God's message for the day, a message of finding one's identity in Christ. S. Sundarrajan, Director, NIT-T, graced the function.

The Prayer Cell of NIT-T, a Christian Fellowship that gathers for prayer meetings in hostels, was started as a small cottage prayer group in 1974 and was known as the REC Prayer Cell.

When Blessie, a second year student, determinedly stepped out on a mission of tailing sparrows on Sunday afternoon, she did not expect to return home many hours later, disappointed. “A friend and I spent hours walking up and down all 14 crosses of Bharathi Nagar twice, but we didn't chance on a single sparrow. The only consolation was an empty sparrow's nest.”

Fortunately, unlike Blessie, some of her friends from Bishop Heber College who participated in the sparrow census organised by the Nature Club and Department of Environmental Studies, got luckier.

Over 60 students were roped in to take a sparrow count in and around Tiruchi as part of World Sparrow Day. There has been growing concern worldwide on dwindling numbers of house sparrows as the ubiquitous creature whose trill we woke up to every morning is now uncommon in our neighbourhoods.

According to the sparrow count, almost no birds have been sighted in residential areas in the heart of the city like Cantonment, Thillai Nagar, Puthur and Woraiyur. “Though this is a cause for concern, it was heartening to find sparrows are still found in localities on the fringe of city limits. The numbers are also encouraging in rural pockets,” says A.Relton, staff advisor, Nature Club.

According to results obtained from the project, Panjapur topped the list with a count of 32 sparrows, followed by Ariyavur and Alithurai. The census took wing when club members grew anxious failing to spot house sparrows on a campus that boasts around 60 varieties of birds.

No place to nest

Students were apprised prior to the study on how to distinguish male and female sparrows by identifying specific characteristics. “For instance the male has a black or white patch on the throat while the female is of a uniform shade,” says Nissie adding that members also looked for common nesting spots like eaves of houses, crevices and grooves. “The sparrow is a cavity nester and change in architectural styles is one of the reasons behind falling numbers. There are a few houses with thatched roofs or tiles that make for nesting places,” adds Mr. Relton.

A combination of reasons such as urbanisation, pollution and even possible radiation emitted from cell phone towers have been attributed to the elusiveness of the bird.

Unavailability of organic, chemical-free food grains may be responsible for lesser success in breeding rate of sparrows, believe bird watchers.

The Department of Environmental Studies of the college also conducted a short study to evaluate if cell phone towers kept the birds at bay, but could find no established correlation.

Students feel individual and collective efforts are necessary to ensure that the sparrow is not something we encounter only in books. “Putting out a little grain and water for the sparrows as a daily ritual could be an interesting hobby,” suggests Asha, a student.

The college plans to distribute ‘sparrow boxes'- boxes with holes for nesting- in areas that have showed significant numbers to save whatever remains of the bird population in the vicinity of the city. School children would be roped in to ensure the birds are undisturbed.

Youth of Tamil Nadu should emulate the example of Gujarat in making agriculture an industry and for promoting agricultural profitability and productivity, said S.Damodaran, State Agriculture Minister.

Delivering the valedictory address at an exhibition on ‘agriculture' organised by ‘Dinamalar' here on Friday, the Minister said that several youths in Gujarat had taken to contract farming technique.

Agriculture has become an industry in that State. Youths adopted economic technique in utilising irrigation waters, he said explaining the tough challenges being successfully tackled by them.

He said that with Chief Minister Jayalalithaa's special concession to farmers, drip irrigation techniques and the proposal for increasing agricultural productivity, the youths should come forward to take up agriculture.

He pointed out that the area of agricultural land had come down from 65 lakh hectares to 50 lakh hectares in the state.

The Agriculture Department and the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University were providing adequate data on agri business to farmers for ensuring attractive returns for their produce.

Earlier, he released an information chart on the various schemes being implemented by the Agriculture and allied departments and agencies. Gandhi Pithan, a farmer, received the first copy.

State Minister for School Education N.R. Sivapathi said that he had mooted a proposal to convert the Cauvery bed in and around the Cauvery bridge in the city, presently dry in the wake of summer-in to a stretch of entertainment.

“Scarcity of land that too a sprawling area for exhibition, has been a challenge in the city. There has been a strong case for the Tiruchiites for some entertainment.

As an short term programme during the summer, we have planned to develop the Cauvery bed beneath the bridge with illumination, and other entertainment facility.

The police will also coordinate ensuring protection to the visiting public till 10 p.m., he said. Jayashree Muralidharan, Collector, P. Kumar, MP, V. Jayapal and Tajudeen, both Deans of TNAU agricultural colleges, R. Ramasubbu, Associate Editor, ‘Dinamalar' also spoke.

Aspiring young cricketers had an inspiring session of interaction with city boy R.Sathish, who has made a mark in the Indian Premier League (IPL), at the valediction of the inter-school cricket tournament on Friday.

“Those who wish to reach higher levels must be determined to work hard,” said Sathish, who played for the Mumbai Indians in the third and fourth editions of the IPL. Terming such inter-school tourneys as launch pads, Sathish advised the youngsters to participate in tournaments regularly.

“There are lot of talented youngsters in the district. They must remain confident and focused,” said Sathish, who will be sporting the Kings XI Punjab jersey in the fifth edition of the IPL.

The eight-day inter-school cricket tournament, which was organised by the Tiruchi District Cricket Association (TDCA) at Bishop Heber College here, was for students up to Standard IX. A handful of tourist destinations and parks could never satisfy people's longing for entertainment. Possibly, what could bring a quantum of solace for amusement-starved Tiruchiites are the exhibitions organised by the State government, and voluntary and service organisations at regular intervals. But, the irony is that whenever it comes to entertainment shows, religious conventions, exhibitions, or circus, there is no dearth of organisers, but of locations at affordable rent.

The corporation ground opposite Annanagar Uzhavar Santhai is mainly hosts used for holding public meetings and exhibitions. But it is not sprawling, and more over not frequented by city buses. Though G Corner ground at Golden Rock attached to the Railways is an alternative, it is not big enough either.

As a result, the organisers opt for the spacious playgrounds of educational institutions. The ground of St. John's Vestry Anglo Indian School, National College, and St. Joseph's College are some of the sought-after venues for the organisers due to their size and presence in the heart of the city.

A serious discussion sprang up at the inaugural function of the four-day agriculture exhibition in the city on Friday. One of the speakers surprised N. R. Sivapthi, Minister for School Education, and other officials present on the occasion, through his plea for identifying a sprawling site in the city for organising exhibitions and entertainment shows.

The Minister too endorsed the need for this demand but was quick to add that shortage of spacious site for organising a mega event in the order of an exhibition, has been posing a challenge to the administration.

Tiruchi district lags behind Tirunelveli, Coimbatore, and Ramanathapuram in number of tourist spots.

Mukkombu and Puliancholai are the only pacifiers and the large gathering at these centres during weekend, festival, and other holidays bears testimony to the fact that people of this district in general and those residing in the city in particular have been craving for entertainment.

Due to its strategic location, Tiruchi hosts many commercial exhibitions regularly and most of them are timed with summer or holiday season.

The circus is also an annual feature. The state Information and Pubic Relations Department has this year revived its annual exhibition and it was held for about two months at Vestry School ground.

Even the religious conventions are held for a few days together. The organisers of these events have to run from pillar to post for finding a suitable site.

“Yes, we don't have adequately big ground in Tiruchi city and it proves a big handicap to the organisers of the major shows. Coimbatore can boast of CODISSIA ground, Chennai the Trade Centre and Madurai city, the Thamukkam maidan. There is an urgent need to develop a spacious ground and the government alone can do it,” says V. Sivakumar, Managing Director of Sky Communication Private Limited and treasurer of the Rotary Club of Tiruchi, which organises mega book fair in the city every year.

Exhibitions organised in the city not only attract district residents , but even the people from distant places in the neighbouring districts of Nagapattinam or Tiruvarur to enjoy it and as a shopping opportunity, Mr. Sivakumar says.

His company has been a regular participant in the commercial exhibitions, but on many occasion he could not get adequate number of stalls due to lack of space. Good and spacious venues will prove beneficial to both the organisers and the visiting public, he adds.

Ve. Govindarajalu, state secretary, Tamil Nadu Traders' Federation, who organised an exhibition at a cinema in Sastri Hall a couple of years ago, says that the state government should immediately resolve the issue. He agrees that dearth of land has been a problem but confined to city.

Fortunately, the city is blessed with vast stretch of lands on its outskirts. Referring to the proposals for shifting the central bus stand mooted a few years ago, he said that the City Corporation had then come out with some alternative sites in one place or other, indicating its availability.

“It is not non-availability but non-utilisation of land in the periphery” he says.

The Government land at G Corner or the Uzhavar Sandhi could not be dug out for erection of poles, a major handicap for the organisers, he says.

He suggests that the available land at sites not far away from the city should be developed into an entertainment zone for organising shows, cultural programmes or exhibitions.

A fair rent could be fixed for the events and service organisations and charity-based associations could be exempt from the rent, he added.

^^There is a lots of space inside the city but all are occupied with government organisations.

A big bunch of the city land is under the control of the Army in the heart of the city. Well they can be relocated to the outer or the city outer should be expanded well to become a part of the city, this would be the solution

^^ Don't know why the media is reporting like this. We, Madurai people are always wishing for a Permanent Trade Center though the Tamukkam grounds and other grounds such as Medical college, U.C School, Moondru maavadi grounds and other such grounds host exhibitions/circuses and are a way to entertain people then and there throughout the year, Industries won't prefer showcasing their products in temporary stalls where possibility of rain and other natural disturbances would be there.

Tiruchi having more number of industries around should also go for a Permanent Trade/Convention center only which could host entertainment exhibitions also. The media report should have laid emphasis on this rather than going for a temporary ground thing.

The largest temple bell in the state, weighing more than 1.5 tonnes, will be ready to ring in two months from the premises of Ugrakaliamman Temple at Thennur near Trichy. The brass bell's sound will reportedly be heard within a 20km radius. Over two dozen artisans from Kumbakonam and Thanjavur will work with award winning sculptor L Radhakrishnan in Erode city round the clock to get the bell ready by the last week of May.

The wooden mold has already been made and works regarding its replica was completed on Monday. Sculpting of the brass bell will begin on Tuesday. It will be transported to Trichy by the first week of June.

According to Radhakrishnan, the bell will be six feet in length and the estimated cost is more than Rs 20 lakh. "Most temple bells in the state weigh less than a tonne. It has been my long cherished dream to make the state's largest bell,'' says Radhakrishnan, who has made more than 300 huge temple bells so far.

His workplace is located inside Edissia Industrial Estate in Kangayam Bypass and residents are starting to trickle in to view the finished clay model. "Though most temples in Tamil Nadu are located in the Thanjavur-Kumbhakonam belt, the bell manufacturing business has remained in Erode for the last several centuries. However, due to manpower shortage I had to depute artisans from Kumbakonam and Thanjavur,'' says Radhakrishnan. Winner of the National Award for the best sculptor in 2002 and Shilpa Guru Award of Union Government in 2007, Radhakrishnan also won Tamil Nadu state award for sculptor in 1979 and 1981.

He won Erode Jaycee's young person award in 1988 and Rashtriya Nirman Rattan Award in 1999. He had also won Gowri Shankar Stapathiyar Award in 1999 and Tamil Nadu Kalainanmani Award in 2002. "I am very passionate about sculpting temple bells. When the Thennur temple committee approached me with the project, I instantly agreed to do it as they were able to afford the cost,'' says Radhakrishnan, who is also making bronze statues of Radha and Krishna for a Coimbatore temple. "More than the job satisfaction and the money in it, what motivates me to keep going is my desire to keep the art of sculpting alive," he added.

^^Instead of a Mart they should have tried an Mall in the first place, with 1.50 lakh of space it would not be a big problem. Any way two theaters have been confirmed. Due to such new entries the old ones are feeling the heat and already Sona-Meena is under renovation, thus a good theater experience is a near dream.

The compound of district court in the city sports a new look, thanks to the efforts by the city Corporation. Sceneries or legendary sequences relating to courts, the typical proceedings of a ‘panchayat' where arbitration takes place in a village, have been painted on the compound of the court.

“We choose department-specific scenery. Being the compound of the district court, we chose certain sequences from the history of Tamil Nadu where justice had been extended even to a cow or a bird,” say M. Anbazhagan and Munusamy, artists.

“The Chola rulers were popular for rendering justice. One of them, Manu Needhi Cholan, rushed to render justice to a cow; Sibhi Chakravarthy had parted with part of his flesh as a means of justice to a bird,” they say referring to the paintings of these sequences.

30 sequences

They have selected 30 sequences to be painted on the compound of the court.

M. Vinodh says the height of the compound is about 10 feet and they divide its length into segments each 12-feet long.

Looking at a postcard-sized photograph, they set out on work.

Each of them takes about five to six hours to complete a painting.

With the sun showing no mercy this summer, tasty and delicious palmyra fruits (nongu), tender coconuts, watermelon, jigar thanda and fresh fruit juice, are in good demand.

‘Kamman koozh ‘(pearl millet porridge) and ‘kezhvaragu koozh' (ragi porridge), both traditional drinks of the villages, have been sought after this summer as they are believed to keep the body cool.

Millets, one of the oldest grains to be consumed, are healthy and non-acidic after consumption. In south India it is taken as porridge or as pancakes (adai and dosa). Pearl millet is a highly nutritious and a gluten free grain, that is full of vitamins, minerals and amino acids.

Mini temporary stalls selling kamman koozh and kezhvaragu koozh, set up by villagers, have come up in the nook and corner of the city. A glass of kamman koozh keeps the body energetic and cool for a couple of hours.

Saravanan, a villager from Madurai, who has set up a makeshift stall at the busy Chathiram bus stand, has to work overtime this summer. Customers prefer kamman koozh to kezhvaragu for beating the heat and regaining energy.

It takes about an hour for him to prepare the koozh , using about five to six kg of pearl millet and ragi. However, the preparation commences the previous evening itself. The pearl millet and ragi mixed with water should be kept in traditional mud pots overnight, ensuring its delicious flavour gained through the porous effect of the mud pot.

Mr. Saravanan says that mouth-watering side dishes like pickles made of beans, fried appalam, chillies, besides mango, never fail to attract more customers. A glass of kamman koozh and kezhvaragu koozh is sold for Rs. 10 and his stall functions from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The business proves to be a good source of revenue to villagers as is the case with Mr.Saravanan whose stall attracts over 100 customers a day. It is a common sight to see scores of villagers transporting the koozh by bicycles to the city much ahead of the break of dawn. A large number of stalls could be spotted at all the busy areas and street corners like Gandhi market, Chathiram bus stand, Palakkarai, Cantonment, central bus stand, Tennur, Subramaniapuram, Woraiyur.
