Hanwha E&C to build world’s largest domed arena near Manila

Korean builder strives to become one of the world’s 100 largest construction firms

Hanwha Engineering and Construction Corp. began work on the world’s largest domed arena in the Philippines on Thursday.

The work for the $175 million contract, signed on Aug. 4, got underway in a ceremony attended by Hanwha E&C officials including vice chairman Kim Hyun-chung and those from the Filipino Christian organization Iglesia Ni Cristo that issued the contract.

The facility located near Manila, named the Philippine Arena, will be fitted with 50,000 seats and its domed roof will be nearly 36,000 square meters, making it the world’s largest domed arena, the company said.

Hanwha E&C said that the work will be carried out over 30 months to be finished early 2014.

“By winning this contract for building the world’s largest dome arena, the company was able to prove its technological capabilities and the ability to carry out overseas projects,” Kim said in a statement. The company said that in the biddings for the contract, it competed with China’s Jiangsu International and the Philippines’ largest construction company EEI Corp. The project will be conducted in design-build process in which the contractor is responsible for all related processes from designing to building the facility, the company said.

“As the bridgehead for the Southeast Asian market, the project is expected to bring opportunities for more civil engineering and construction projects in the region.”

The project opens a new market for Hanwha E&C, which has focused mostly on the Middle Eastern markets, as it drives to become one of the world’s 100 largest construction companies.

Earlier this year Hanwha Engineering and Construction announced plans to become one of the world’s top 100 builders by 2015 with an annual sales figure of 5 trillion won ($4.65 billion), and win contracts worth 7 trillion won in that year.

The plans also revealed that the company will diversify its overseas portfolio to include civil engineering projects, and to expand into solar power and other renewable energy businesses.

Also as part of the plans, the company hopes to expand its overseas generated income by more than 20 percent each year with the aim of raising 40 percent of its annual revenues from overseas sources by 2015.

In the Middle East, Hanwha E&C has made significant headway this year, winning a series of contracts including an urban development project in Iraq.

The contract, issued by Iraq’s National Investment Commission, is valued at $7.25 billion, making it the largest overseas construction project to be won by a Korean construction firm.

Under the contract, Hanwha Engineering and Construction will build a planned town at a location 25 kilometers east of central Baghdad. The town will be built over an area of 1,830 hectares and contain 100,000 new homes, the company said.

^^ Here...

An arena is an enclosed area, often circular or oval-shaped, designed to showcase theater, musical performances, or sporting events. It is composed of a large open space surrounded on most or all sides by tiered seating for spectators. The key feature of an arena is that the event space is the lowest point, allowing for maximum visibility. Usually, an arena is designed to accommodate a fairly large number of spectators.

The term arena is sometimes used as a synonym for a very large venue such as Pasadena's Rose Bowl, but such a facility is typically called a stadium. The use of one term over the other has mostly to do with the type of event. Football is typically played in a stadium while basketball and hockey are typically played in an arena, although many of the larger arenas hold more spectators than do the stadiums of smaller colleges or high schools. And there are exceptions. The home of the Duke University basketball team would qualify as an arena, but the facility is called Cameron Indoor Stadium.

i am 1000% sure that this project will be pushed through simply because this is a project of INC. INC does not announce their projects. They always surprise us with new beautiful churches on the rise. Roam around the country and you will find in every town with a unique and beautiful church of INC. Their church is properly and beautifully maintained because it is the house of GOD which should always be like that.

Top-tier contractor to build world’s largest domed performance hall

By Kim Tae-gyu

Hanwha Engineering & Construction, one of Korea’s top-tier builders, has signed a contract to establish a large indoor arena near Manila, Philippines, worth $175 million.

When completed in 2014, the 50,000-seat arena will become the largest domed performance hall in the world, the Seoul-based contractor said Thursday.

``The facilities will be built on 74,000 square meters of land and will be three times bigger than the Seoul Olympic Gymnastics Stadium, the country’s largest indoor arena,’’ a Hanwha official said.

``Based on our technological edge, we will take charge of the work from the design stage. It will take around 30 months to wrap up construction, which will be finished early 2014."

Hanwha broke ground this week, as ordered by INC, a Philippine Christian foundation, in Bulacan, approximately 27 kilometers north of Manila.

A set of dignitaries took part in the event, including Hanwha Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Kim Hyun-chung and INC Executive Minister Eduardo Manalo.

Hanwha outsmarted a pair of strong rivals in EEI, the Philippine’s top builder, and China’s Giangsu International to win the lucrative contract this year.

The company said that it won the hearts and minds of INC officials thanks to its technological competitiveness.

``We will gain recognition through building the world’s largest indoor arena, which will help us win other contracts across the world,’’ Hanwha Vice Chairman Kim said in a statement.

The outfit has won several big deals over the past few years and is currently carrying out five projects involving electricity plants and refineries in Saudi Arabia, Algeria and Kuwait.

Earlier this year, the company obtained a $1.23 billion order for power and desalination plants in Saudi Arabia.

Hanwha also entered the burgeoning Iraqi construction market, which is expected to emerge as a future cash cow for domestic contractors as the Gulf country is set to rebuild in the aftermath of the long-lasting war.

``Early last year, we set a long-term goal of chalking up 7 trillion won in orders and 5 trillion won in annual sales by 2015 so as to join the world’s top 100 construction firms,’’ the official said.

``We are determined to rack up more than 20 percent growth in the overseas sector per annum so that the revenues can account for upside of 40 percent of our overall top line by 2015.’’

Toward that end, Hanwha strives to diversify its global initiatives across the board as well as to advance into new businesses like renewable energy including solar power.

Well, for the INC Centennial celebration itself, that gathering would naturally have a religious theme but it would also be used for wholesome secular entertainment afterwards, as mentioned in this article from the Inquirer...

In four year’s time, the Philippines could very well be the site of the world’s biggest domed coliseum, rivaling that of the historic 22,000-seat Araneta Coliseum, once considered the world’s biggest indoor venue in 1960.

If constructed as planned, the project would put the country on the record books again. Located in Bocaue, Bulacan, the project covers some 52 hectares and will serve as a multi-purpose venue designed to host religious, cultural and sports events.

“The project,” according to my source, “aims to establish itself as a wholesome gathering place for people and an entertainment home for the whole family.” In fact, he further explained, the project could also help boost the Philippines’ tourism program.

I have been hearing this covered arena that the INC will be building in Bulacan in preparation of the church's Centennial Celebration on July 27, 2014. They got big plans in building big structures in the Philippines and even abroad. Here in Chicago and other parts of Northern Midwest, INC has been purchasing properties like catholic cathedrals and other non-catholic churches and chapels. Imagine, the INC Church pays in cash and not in a term or mortgage. One church in Chicago which was recently purchased by the church costing $2+ million was made in cash. The owner of the cathedral (that was purchased by INC) conducted a thorough investigation of the INC why were they able to purchase in cash (well other than they are afraid of money laundering for a big money to be put in the bank in cash or check). Indeed, they found out that INC really has the power to do so. INC get their money from their own funds and not from any other politicians and government. INC has been in full swing in purchasing and putting up properties around the world. I hope I can go home on the Centennial Celebration, I'm excited.

Nope, this is a church-owned property. Ung sa China nman, iba ang case nun. It's the Chinese Government and the Olympic Committee who were responsible in building the facilities. Therefore, sa kanila (chinese government and Olympic committee) ang mga buildings. Ung sa church nman, sa church lng un kasi pera lng ng church ang ginamit. maliban n lang kung i-donate ng INC ang arena na un pero i doubt. That is a church facility.

Well, it won't be no North Korean Arena where it stands Idle for one show like Arirang festival. This is a multi-purpose facilitiy. If you think how many established locales there are in the Philippines alone, there will be Anniversary celebrations where it can be celebrated. That's alot of dates already booked for those events.. Also, the recently heald INC Unity Games, the stadium would be ready for that as well.. Numerous Bible Studies and many church events would fill up the dates and not to mention the non church activies.. This venue will be used!!:colgate:

Coming from the Executive Minister himself, the project is called "Philippine Arena" because it is not only for the INC but for the Filipino people. why so negative? can't you just be happy that a world class landmark will be added to the country? and don't be too quick to judge by saying that it'll be a white elephant project. remember that it is funded not by the government but by a private organization which happens to be a big religious group, ergo events that will be held there also highly involves church based activies and 50,000 seats surely won't be enough. and speaking of location, metro manila is congested as it is so bulacan is the nearest less congested area in the north. you said that you don't want this to become a religious discussion but it clearly shows in your posts (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpost.php?p=83046898&postcount=53) that your pessimism is pointing to that direction.

I think this 2 building above is separate project. The EGM Medical Center located at commonwealth ave beside new era general hospital while the CEM Annex located at NEU campus QC. FYI kahit sinimulan na ang Ciudad de Victoria where Philippine Arena located, 2loy 2loy din ang construction ng 100+ na kapilya project. Andyan pa ang housing project and offices. Net 25 new home will be transfer this coming december na rin at new era ave. D ba nakakalula ang project ng INC?

And the new acquisitions abroad that need renovations plus those that would have new chapels built from the ground up.

pu-Y1cJEzBw&feature=related

But bro, based on the broadcast earlier, the EGM Medical Center was mentioned by both Bro. Eduardo and Bro. Glicerio to rise within the Bocaue site.

I hope I can go home on the Centennial Celebration, I'm excited.
dapat lang walang politicians

ung under construction na MRT 7 diba going to Bulacan yun?

MRT 7 will connect the station from North Avenue (near SM City North Edsa and Trinoma in QC) and San Jose del Monte, Bulacan so it won't have stops anywhere near this site. But the MRT 7 will pass along Commonwealth Avenue where UP-Diliman and the INC Central Complex are.

If it pushes through, the nearest train line would be the Central Luzon Railways where Bocaue is one of the stops.

Yes i agree with you. Although, hindi ko narinig ang mga balitang yan but speaking of huge investment, walang sino mang mag invest nang ganun kalaking halaga if it has no other purpose. Yes we know that it will be built primarily for whatever INC's huge gathering. But let us be logical that our INC brothers' gathering is not daily or weekly. For me if i were the owner of this arena, i should think of recovering my investment. Hindi lang ito P50,000 or 1 million ang worth na pwede lang i do donate mo.

Well, i am happy and proud of this project because the country can now host major world events. More industries will benefit on this project once operational. Tourism Industry, Airline and Transportation Industry, Hospitality, Food and beverages and so many business sectors.

pero umabot sa 80000 yung attendance niya hehe

If it were to be used for commercial purposes, It would be too far for the south Mega Manila area. SM arena would still be the prime venue for major events since its at the center of the metro and in an established area like MoA. However it could probably be a threat to Araneta Coliseum for the rest of the lion's share of major events.

I would say though that this is primarily, if not exclusively, for INC congregations.

^^ Just saw the broadcast about the groundbreaking ceremony on Net 25 too...

The stadium is part of the New Era University Sports Complex as the NEU Bocaue branch will also rise here. A hospital called the EGM Medical Center is also in the works.

As mentioned, the designer of the Philippine Arena is Populous of Australia. The structural consultant is a British company. The builder, as already announced, is Hanwha of Korea. Coming from the Executive Minister himself, the project is called "Philippine Arena" because it is not only for the INC but for the Filipino people. When finished, the structure would be 60 meters high. And I loved the reflecting pool in the render!

i admire INC, not because of their religious belief...but their sense of patriotism, in the sense that instead naming it INC Arena, they want to share it to the whole Filipinos and make the Filipinos proud as they want it to be the worlds biggest..so they called it Philippine Arena...

There are various projects being launched by the INC geared towards helping everyone (not just "Filipinos"). If you search on google, or any search engine about the INC GIVING project launched by the INC, you'll notice that their help is not limited to just "Filipinos" but their main objective is to help the WORLD.

It's sad to see that since people hardly know about the Iglesia Ni Cristo, they make hasty generalizations about the INC in order to belittle the INC's achievements.

Overall, the Philippine Arena will bring great respect/honor to the Philippines. But unfortunately, some will never be able to see it that way since they are blinded by their misconception of the INC.

Mr. Andrew James/ Structural Design Consultant

It's such an ambitious project and so unussual... and great, it will be really exciting.. no one has done this before, no one has designed 50,000 seats in a bowl.. i wanna go and see what it feels like.. to look around and see many people all seating there....

The stage is at one end w/c is different from most arena buildings where the stage is on the middle of the building that's because it will function primarily as an auditorium....so everybody will be focus on one point rather than on a game in all around....

It is one sided so its totally unique in terms of viewing, size, and atmosphere for indoor events......The floor area at the middle is big enough to cater for tennis, basketball and gymnastics so this building can be used if the Philippines chooses to bid for SEA Games or Asian Games......this building could be one of the key pages of the bid for that game.. it may be used for opening and closing ceremony as well its like to be the biggest building of the Philippines has..

For conclusion,I just wanna say its probably the most exciting and ambitious project that we know of in asia, certainly the largest building of its kind and the fact that it will be the centerpiece for whole new city, for whole new community makes it one of the most important.. and possibly be the largest and most important building in whole of the Philippines for ten years or more ..

Because it's not public construction...

The INC has a good track record at finishing its projects on time.
The 7,000-seater Templo Central was finished in two years and the 4,000-seater Tabernakulo in less than a year.

Yearly, the INCECD completes more than 100 houses of worship excluding, housing, offices, and other facilities.

Aside from that, it's got the backing of three international giants in the engineering and construction industry...

1. The designer's Populous of Australia (O2 World Arena-Berlin, O2 Arena- Dublin, ANZ Stadium-Sydney)

2. The contractor's Hanwha of Korea (Kintex 2nd Exhibition Center- Goyang, SK; Ansan Sports Complex- Ansan, SK; Bucheon Sports Complex- Bucheon, SK)

3. The structural engineering consultant's Buro Happold of UK (Hong Kong -Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, Guangzhou-Shenzen Express Rail Link, Aviva Stadium-Dublin, Arsenal Emirates-Londion.)

Based on this video, the project will be made mostly of pre-fab steel work to be shipped in perhaps from Korea...

Mr. Chris Sparrow|Buro happold

"...This would be a magnificent project that we are going to construct here and BURO HAPPOLD is honored and privilege to be a part of this construction.
the roof will span some hundred and sixty(160) meters which is about one and a half of soccer pitches...

...the roof will contain 9,000 tons of steel works, all the steel works will brought here from outside of the Philippines probably from Korea, it will be assembled here at this particular site(ciudad de victoria) in bits and then will be erected upto its final position 60 meters upto the air from where we are now standing so about fifteen stories high and be a major building..

...the building will be founded on piles, piles are now being constructed, they will be taken down..so the building will be safely founded on pile construction,.
one of the biggest challenge we found on this particular project was designing for earthquake loads.. and we'll be designing this building for about a third of the deadload of the building, we will be designing for the horizontal loads for the building..

...the building will be fully airconditioned, it will be the average temperature with 25 degree centigrade which is world class standard for comfort..
i think its a fantastic team that we are involved in and we really look forward to making this a world class project.."

Heard that one of the considerations is the time constraint. It has to be finished within 30 months. Hanwha won the bid because they have the superior technology to accomplish this. Plus, South Korea is a behemoth in the steel industry.

True, hindi kailangan maging arkitekto para magsabi ang isang tao kung maganda ang isang gusali o hindi. Pero si Rafael kasi, with his ALL CAPS response, I think there is a hint of bitterness/envy sa kaniyang isinulat. I am sure na meron pang igaganda ang design ng Philippine Arena, from other designer's perspective, I'm interested to hear/read them. But to flat out say ANG PANGIT naman, then that's another story. It's obvious naman na may hint of anti-INC. Yan ang hirap sa ibang kababayan natin, (konti lang naman, including Makati prime,) a new development in the Philippines, just because a small religious group is building it and not Ayala land or SM, hindi nila kayang suportahan. Heck ang daming ipinapatayong building dito sa Pilipinas na design wise, hindi maitutugma sa ibang bansa na pinatayo ng mga realty developers dito. Pero unlike Rafael, I see it as part of development ng Pilipinas. Maybe next time, we will see more imaginative building designs in the future. And the Philippine Arena is just the start since it is indeed different from other domed-arena - with a classical Greek styled interior.

Medyo misleading yung ibang info.

Thanks for the link. Greek amphitheater style pala tawag dun sa interior layout. The big difference is in the capacity- 12, 000 of Leed vs. 50,000 of the Philippine Arena so I hope there'd be huge monitors to magnify the images for the benefit of the audience at farthest corner of the facility.

I read this a while ago kaya hinanap ko dito sa SSC, and wow ang ganda nga! pero sana hindi lang sa dome at meeting facilities mag invest ang INC, Im not part of INC but being local bred church it's worth applauding that they had gone far when it comes to be a leading religion in the country. Sana mag invest din sila sa education and medical facilities and make good use of NEU (New Era university) like what Mormons did with BYU(Bringham Young University) in creating a reputable Medical Institution and MBA schools. In the end naman it's their church members who will benefit greatly.

^^ Yes, thanks for the kind words. It is one of the reasons the Church chose this big tract of land though some criticize it for being in the middle of nowhere. A new NEU campus will rise in the site and I've heard there would be a college of architecture, music, and medicine among others. The last would complement the EGM Medical Center to rise there. There are other facilities on the works that would address the Church's multi-faceted role.

When The Arena is finished, it would be bigger than some of the world’s biggest like New York City’s Madison Square Garden (20,000), Los Angeles’ Staples Center, which is home to multi-NBA champion team LA Lakers (21,000); and the O2 Arena in London (20,000).
The Philippine Arena owners have given the contractors to wind up the project by 2014, in time for the centennial celebration in July of the Iglesia ni Cristo, which commands tremendous followers not only here but also with members from around the world.
“The Arena,” stressed my source, “is being built not to make a profit. In fact, it is not even commercialized nor aimed at making money.”- INQ SPORT (Manolo R.I) http://sports.inquirer.net/13449/biggest-sports-dome-not-for-profit

Populous builds thriller in Manila: world’s largest indoor arena

29 August 2011

Construction has commenced on the world’s largest indoor arena in Manila, Philippines, designed by the Populous.

The ground breaking ceremony was held last week for the 50,000 seat indoor stadium at Ciudad de Victoria.

With a construction value of AUD $200M, the arena has been commissioned by the Philippine religion, Iglesia Ni Cristo (the Church of Christ) and will be complete in time for the Church’s Centennial Celebration in 2014.

http://www.architectureanddesign.com.au/Uploads/PressReleases/infotoday/Images-20110829/110829_poulousA.JPG

Populous has designed the arena with engineers Buro Happold, and construction will be carried out by Hanwha Engineering and Construction Corp.

Project Director, Populous senior principal Andrew James, said:“The building’s capacity pushes the boundary of Arena design and will eventually establish itself as the world’s largest indoor arena. The form uses simple geometry to create an elegant appearance, while also giving the venue a powerful presence within its setting.”

http://www.architectureanddesign.com.au/Uploads/PressReleases/infotoday/Images-20110829/110829_poulousB.JPG

he arena has been master planned to enable a further 50,000 people to gather at a “live site” outside the arena, to share in major events.

While the arena will hold major church gatherings, it will also operate as a multi-use sports and concert venue, capable of holding a range of events, from boxing and basketball, to live music performances.

anayway, let's talk about the arena, it is not the biggest dome because there is 3 or 4 domes maybe 2 in us and one in japan maybe its oita that is around 220 meters plus ang diameter at 60,000 plus ang capacity

but, the philippine arena is the biggest of its kind with an amphitheater like venue and probably the biggest domed arena/amphitheater in the world

Iglesia ni Cristo to build world's largest dome-arena in Bulacan
22-Sep-11, 6:29 AM | Philippine News Agency

MALOLOS CITY, Bulacan - Construction for the world’s biggest dome-arena has started at Ciudad de Victoria in Bocaue, Bulacan.

Named the Philippine Arena, the dome is a centerpiece project of the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC), which is expected to be completed within 30 months in time for the INC’s centennial celebration in 2014.

It will have a seating capacity of 50,000 to 55,000, a floor area of 74,000 square meters and a domed roof which is nearly 36,000 square meters - which makes it the largest dome arena in the world.

The project, which is now starting its civil works, will be conducted in design-build process with an estimated construction value of $212 million or a whopping P9 billion.

“At first, foreign consultants were shocked and could not believe in our plan to build such an extremely large structure,” said Glicerio Santos Jr., general auditor of INC.

“Structural and architectural engineers, design planners and builders are fantastic team from world-renown Populous of Australia, Burro Happold of United Kingdom and Hanwha E & C Corporation of Korea,” he added.

Santos said that this early, a foreign company is dealing with INC to come up with a contract of holding an international circus show in the arena.

According to Eduardo Manalo, Executive Minister of Iglesia Ni Cristo, the project is intended not only for their growing membership, major church gatherings and church centennial celebration.

“This is a dream come true for Eraño V. Manalo, whose vision in building the facility is to serve and share God’s blessings to the community -– local or international.”

“The Ciudad de Victoria where Philippine Arena is being constructed will also be the home to EGM Memorial Medical Center, New Era University Bulacan campus, New Era University Sports Stadium Complex and EVM Convention Center, capable of holding a wide range of events,” Manalo also said.

“When INC first contacted us, we didn’t know a lot about the Philippines. We were astonished because the project is ambitious and unusual. It is twice bigger than Staple Center in Los Angeles, California with 21,000 sitting capacity and beating O2 Arena in London with 30,000 seats,” said Andrew James, structural design consultant from Populous.

“It is our honor and privilege to be part of this magnificent project that was masterfully planned with fully-air conditioned building," Chris Sparrow, engineering consultant of Burro Happold, shared.

“The Philippine Arena is three times bigger than the Seoul Olympic Gymnastics Stadium, Korea’s largest indoor arena,” Kim Hyun-chung, CEO of Hanwha Engineering & Construction Corporation, said.

Gracing the recent groundbreaking ceremony, along with Eduardo V. Manalo, INC officials and foreign consultants, were House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr., Senator Francis Escudero, Bulacan Governor Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado, Bocaue Mayor Eduardo Villanueva Jr. and Sta. Maria Mayor Bartolome Ramos.

Belmonte said that the arena is the biggest of its kind, a phenomenal structure, historic and centerpiece project.

“I congratulate the Iglesia ni Cristo for setting-up the Philippine Arena at the center of Bulacan. Whatever development that Bocaue and Santa Maria will enjoy, it will cascade down to all barangays and will benefit the whole province and the country as well. This is not just a wise decision to locate here but a manifestation of God’s blessing,” Alvarado said.

“We are very glad hosting this project. It will greatly help boost tourism in Bulacan. Ciudad de Victoria at the border of Bocaue and Santa Maria along North Luzon Expressway is a rain-fed area, that’s why land use conversion is not a big problem in fast tracking the project,” the governor added.

Mayor Ramos, for his part, lauded INC’s effort, saying it will create employment, livelihood opportunities and more economic activities for Bulakenyos.

It could be remembered that the Araneta Coliseum or the “Big Dome” in Cubao was once the world’s biggest indoor dome for having a dome-shape roof measuring 108 diameters.

It was beaten by Oita Stadium, also known as “The Big Eye” in Japan in 2001 for having a retractable roof measuring a diameter of 274 meters. In 2009, the Oita Stadium was beaten by the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington Texas by just one meter.
