According to latest studies, Iran ranks 10th worldwide in the manufacturing of shoes.

Announcing this, a member of board of directors of Association of Managers and Experts of Iranian Shoe Industry said the shoe output worldwide reached 50.6 billion pairs during 2007-2009 which is an average of 16.8 billion pairs annually, ISNA reported.

Ali Lashgari elaborated that China, India, Brazil, Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, Mexico, Pakistan, Italy and Iran manufactured close to 89 percent of the aforesaid figure during 2007-2009.

China and India accounted for 58 and 12 percent respectively, while Pakistan, Iran and Turkey made up 1.42, 1.02 and 0.97 percent respectively, he pointed out.

Pakistan with a population of 172 million has annual produces 240 million pairs of shoes annually or 1.39 pairs of shoes per person, he said.

Home to 75 million people, Iran produces 171 million pairs of shoes, or 2.28 pairs of shoes per person, he mentioned.

He continued that US, China, India, Japan, Brazil, UK, Indonesia, France, Germany and Italy contributed to 68 percent to the global shoe market.

Factories in Operation
According to statistics, Iran has 544 factories in the footwear industry operating under license from the Ministry of Industry, Mine and Trade.

The factories employ a total of approximately 15,000 people while 62,000 are involved in manufacturing shoes by hand, 8 000 in unlicensed shoe workshops, 30, 000 working on factories producing shoes accessories.

The footwear industry is closely connected with the leather industry, oil chemicals, textile and chemical industry, packaging industry, machinery and others.

Shoe factories produce approximately 262.5 million pairs of shoes.

72.5 million pairs are leather and sports shoes while 190 million constitute other types of footwear.

The factories are mainly located in the provinces of East Azerbaijan (34 percent), Qom (30 percent), Tehran (22 percent), Khorasan-Rezavi (3 percent) and Yazd (2 percent).

Specialists say that an average citizen in Iran uses 2-3 pairs of shoes annually. This means that there is a stable balance between supply and demand.

Unused Capacity
Earlier, secretary of Iranian leather industries, Manouchehr Majidi said some 70 percent of production capacity of handbags and shoes in the country are unused.

"At present, about 240 million cubic feet of pickled hides products are produced nationwide.

If the production capacity for shoes in the country is 80 million pairs, even if the leather industry works with full force, it cannot meet the country's demand," added Majidi.

He recalled that $3 billion have been invested in three leather townships, but a large portion of this investment remains unused, ISNA reported.

The official said currently 70 percent of production capacity in three major leather hubs of the country, namely Tabriz, Mashhad and Tehran, is unused.

He referred to the few thousand years of historical precedence of leather industry in the country and said the good omen is the raw materials for this industry, such as oil, exist in the country in abundance. He regretted that some exporters of skin of sheep, goat and cow are careless about the required standards in their activities
