The Temple of the Vedic Planetarium, a project that has been ISKCON’s evasive super-goal for over two decades, is finally coming to fruition.

What’s so special about the TOVP? Well, it was back in the 1970s that ISKCON’s founder Srila Prabhupada first expressed his desire to build a Vedic Planetarium at his society’s headquarters in Mayapur, India. “Within the planetarium we will construct a huge, detailed model of the universe as described in the text of the fifth canto of Srimad Bhagavatam,” he said.
Of course, as with everything he did, Srila Prabhupada was acting in fulfillment of the desires of previous spiritual teachers. A grand temple for Mayapur was predicted by none other than Lord Nityananda, the most intimate associate of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, some five hundred years ago. Speaking to Srila Jiva Goswami, the Lord said:
“When our Lord Chaitanya disappears, by His desire, the Ganges will swell. The Ganges water will almost cover Mayapur for a hundred years, and then the water will again recede. For some time only the place will remain, devoid of houses. Then again, by the Lord’s desire, this place will again be manifest, and the devotees will build temples of the Lord. One exceedingly wonderful temple (adbhuta-mandira) will appear from which Gauranga’s eternal service will be preached everywhere.”
Srila Prabhupada wanted this great temple to have a specific look. In July 1976, during a visit to Washington D.C., he instructed Yadubara Dasa and Visakha Dasi to take photographs of the domed Capitol building there, as a basis for the TOVP. And in the early days of ISKCON in London, he gave further detailed instructions on what different parts of the temple should look like, directing many senior devotees make drawings and models of the building.

The Temple of the Vedic Planetarium will be a stunning spritiual monument, dwarfing the already huge Srila Prabhupada Samadhi Mandir and featuring three giant gold domes. The middle, and largest, dome will house three different altars: one for the Gaudiya Vaishnava line of teachers and disciples, ranging from the Six Goswamis of the 15th century all the way to Srila Prabhupada; one for the Pancha-tattva of Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and his associates; and one for Sri-Sri Radha-Madhava and their eight principal gopi servants.

RdIFArBqdeM

In the center of the middle dome, hanging from the ceiling, will be a huge rotating model of the universe as described in sacred texts such as the Srimad-Bhagavatam. Described by Srila Prabhupada in his letters, the model will be in the form of a chandelier, two hundred feet across, and will feature displays explaining how Vedic cosmology corresponds to the visible universe of our experience.
A smaller dome on the TOVP’s right hand side will serve as a separate temple for Krishna’s half-man half lion form, Lord Nrsimhadeva. And on the left hand side of the main temple, another dome will offer an enlivening tour of the various regions of the cosmic creation. Beginning from the lower planets, pilgrims will be able to travel up through the earthly realm and then on to the higher planetary systems, before passing beyond the boundary of the material universe. Within the spiritual realm, visitors will view the various spiritual planets, before finally arriving at the topmost spiritual abode of the Supreme Lord Sri Krishna.

Sri Dham Mayapur

Mayapur is located on the banks of the Ganges river, at the point of its confluence with the Jalangi, near Navadvip, West Bengal, India, 130 km north of Kolkata. It is the Head Quarters of ISKCON and is considered a holy place by a number of other traditions within Hinduism, but is of special significance to followers of Gaudiya Vaishnavism as the birthplace of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, regarded as a special incarnation of Krishna in the mood of Radha. It is visited by over a million pilgrims annually.

Vedic Cosmology

Cosmology is defined as the study of the origin, purpose, structure and functioning of the universe. Vedic cosmology gives a vast amount of information about not only the structure of the phenomenal universe as we see it, but also a clear idea of the source of the manifested universe, its purpose, and the subtle laws that govern its operation.

The fundamental concept that pervades Vedic cosmology is the relation and dependence that everything has upon the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Sri Krishna; the source of creation, maintenance and dissolution of the manifested worlds. Although Sri Krishna is the ultimate cause of all other causes, His existence is beyond the material energy and He Himself takes no direct part in these activities, but indirectly controls the universe through his delegated expansions and empowered agents in the form of various incarnations and demigods.

Pervading the entire science of Vedic cosmology is the understanding that the universe is created and maintained by personal activity. This means that behind all apparently mechanistic laws and events there is one or more persons who enact and administer the laws, and control all universal events.

Accepting a Supreme controller is central to entering into an understanding of Vedic cosmology. As such, proper comprehension of the subject requires that one first accept that as human beings we have very limited sensual faculties with which to examine the universe, meaning that we can never gain a complete picture of the universe by our own sensual and intellectual faculties alone.

From the Vedas (http://www.krishna.com/what-are-vedas) and especially the Vedic cosmology, we can receive information from beyond our sensory plane or awareness, that describes the hierarchy of beings within the universe, leading ultimately to the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Sri Krishna. Most importantly, we get information of how we can successfully interact with the universe to live a peaceful and progressive life in this world, while gradually elevating our consciousness to the spiritual plane.

As Krsna states in the Bhagavad Gita (http://www.krishna.com/krishnas-book-bhagavad-gita),

"A person in full consciousness of Me, knowing Me to be the ultimate beneficiary of all sacrifices and austerities, the Supreme Lord of all planets and demigods, and the benefactor and well-wisher of all living entities, attains peace from the pangs of material miseries."

Thus, human society can take the greatest benefit from appreciating and understanding this instruction and molding their life around it. As such, Vedic cosmology is not merely an attempt to understand the world around us, rather it is the process by which we understand both the world, our place within it, and the relationship between ourselves, this world and the Supreme source of all, from Whom all other energies are emanating.

Kaviraj, thank you for your contributions but there is already a thread on this temple - Tallest Hindu Temple in World (35 Stories) -- Sri Mayapur Vedic Temple, Mayapur, WB (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=416566). Please post you updates in that thread and ask MODs to delete this thread. Thanks

Yes but the designs which you posted are already in that thread. Perhaps you can add the latest constr. pics in that thread and delete this one. Just my opinion :)

Actually IMO it would be better if the older thread is deleted instead...the older project was about the tallest Hindu temple which was later scrapped to make way for this one. And most of the posts there are about the older project therefore out of context. This thread is more relevant.
And then I can see np keeping both threads...just let the other one asleep. :D

Thx!:) Indeed the tourism potential will develop rapidly once the temple and other related infrastructure are completed.
The mission statement issued by the group reads as:

Completion of the project would lead to several things, including spin-off benefits for the local economy, improvement in healthcare and education facilities, availability of micro credit to the people. The idea is to ensure that tourist arrivals in Mayapur goes up by "1,000 per cent by 2020". With proper infrastructure in place, Mayapur could figure among the top-20 tourist destinations in India.

Other than the planetarium, there are some other small projects going on inside the ISKCON complex itself and these will add up the the place!

If such a gigantic temple is really built near Kolkata, it will boost tourism significantly. I know ISKON babaji’s are quite influential even in International level. May be they will start competing with RK mission in the spiritual field. But ultimately Bongs will be benefited. This temple is similar in size with St.Peter’s bacilica of Rome , no fun to build such large temple. The video even have trigonometric calculations. What far sighted people they are!

babaji, bong, spiritual field. such beautiful ideas.

======

I was thinking this is not about the benefit of "bongs" -- narrowly defined. this is a tribute to Lord Krishna, Sri Chaitanya (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaitanya_Mahaprabhu), Nityananada Mahaprabhu, the bhakti movement (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bhakti_movement), and Gaudiya Vaishnavism in general. the devotees (http://www.tovp.org/en/news/blog/189-one-in-a-million) who donated money (http://www.tovp.org/about-us/chairmans-message) for this wonderful project are not necessarily bongs.

Indeed! The complex will boost tourism but not only that. It will provide many amenities to the local people there ,especially the underprivileged, like food, healthcare and micro credit.
As for the temple itself, it will be the newest addition to Mayapur and will be a major asset to the millions of devotees. This influx will most likely lead to other projects and trigger more development in the region.
The temple alone will be able to accommodate up to 10,000 people.

No worry, it will be completed in due time...no delay, no rush! After the temple is completed, there will be a huge landscaping work to be done for the vast garden, fountains, vegetation, pathways etc...so I would say mid or late 2013! :D

Acoustics and Sound System Design for the New Temple

The essence of the acoustics and the sound system design is computer simulation and 3D modeling technique.

Temple Dome 3D Model
http://www.tovp.org/images/stories/blog/acoustics/temple-dome-3d-model.jpg

Predicting the performance of the acoustical material and audio equipment is done by sophisticated CAD software this is the most modern techniques available in the world for Acoustics and Audio Industry. This allows the prediction of proper speech and sound levels much before the construction of the building starts at the site.

The fine-tuning of the building acoustics is done in the 3D computer model (of each dome of the temple building) and its sound characteristics, thus, potentially, saving time and money on expensive remedial treatments that may otherwise have been necessary following project completion.

First a 3D wireframe model is prepared material on each surface is applied on the scaled model. The loudspeaker system is placed in the model in the X, Y and Z coordinates. The audience area is defined and then fine tuning of material and loudspeaker system firing angle is adjusted to get the best results.

The 3D model then is imported in a mapping module of the software, then ray tracing and mapping is done to adjudge the final performance of the acoustics and audio system.

Deities at the Temple of Vedic Planetarium

Inside the temple, there will be the same two main deities along with the standard disiplic succession. That is, Guruparampara, Panchatatva, and Radhamadhava in this exact sequence, as following Srila Prabhupada’s orders and desire regard this matter.

The deities will be placed in three individual altars. The combined length of this is a total of 135 ft length (41 meters). These elegantly striking altars will be decked with blue marble and gold inlays. The attached image is a work in process, a conceptual drawing at its early stage, which will be further refined with time.

Lord Nrisimhadeva

Lord Nrisimhadeva will have His own temple. When standing in front of the temple, while looking directly to the right, this temple is completely in vision. Even when taking it from the perspective of one standing in the middle of the temple room, Lord Nrisimhadeva's temple is fully visible. This is in allowance of the TOVP being built in a very open fashion, where there is easy access from one room to another.

The Evolution of a Divine Mission

The TOVP construction has come a long way from its primary and basic stages. We have been efficiently moving fast, and therefore can currently see the museum floors coming into vision already!

The temple premises is expanding rapidly day by day, now giving us a better visual image in regards to its magnitude. As we can see in the attached pictures, the Temple construction is almost merging with Srila Prabhupada’s Bhajan Kutir, thus making a beautiful flow and connection by its exact placement in what will be the wonderful city of Sri Dham Mayapur. Everything is gradually coming together to fulfill the wishes and prediction of our previous Acharyas. It is only by their support, and the grace of Sri Guru, Sri Gauranga, and all their wonderful devotees, that we can be blessed to continue this magnificent mission successfully!

@KavirajG, I had no knowledge that Henry Ford’s grandson is involved in this project. It is an impressive project. Vhakti cult that flooded the subcontinent in 14th-15th century started from this small village. It deserves a magnificent temple. This video is also impressive.

Yeah Alfred Ford (Ambarisha Das) has been a devout member of ISKCON since 1975. He supported and funded many projects worldwide and is now the chairman of TOVP.

HIS HOLINESS JAYAPATAKA SWAMI BLESSES THE TOVP ENGINEERS

On September 3, 2011, His Holiness Jayapataka Maharaja invited the entire TOVP engineering staff to his personal quarters to meet everyone and hear about the progress of the temple. Govinda Prabhu introduced everyone and Maharaja asked some engineers about their shifts and time on the site. Then Jayapataka Maharaja gave a small speech in which he discussed how Srila Prabhupada stressed to him to chant 16 rounds, attend the morning program and then spend the rest of the day working. He expressed that the temple should last forever and that this is such important work. Then he said "May Krsna bless all of you!"

Oh, that looks gorgous. I wonder when construction will be complete!

The whole temple building itself is expected to be complete by late 2012. But it's not as simple as it seems. The whole complex is a huge work of art with complicated designs, mosaics and intricate carvings all over the place. The inside is another story with the huge altar and the planetarium structure and art work. Then we've got the vast garden and the landscaping that goes with it. So I would go for mid 2013.

Srila Prabhupada's first visit to the ToVP (www.tovp.org/en/news/204-srila-prabhupadas-first-visit-to-the-tovp)

Yesterday was the disappearance day of our beloved Srila Prabhupada. For the celebration we invited him to come on his palanquin after Guru-puja to the new temple for a special kirtan and circumambulation. Along with His Grace, devotees were also invited to join the parikrama to the ToVP site. What transpired inside the temple room was a shared feeling of awe and reverence for the vision Srila Prabhupada had for Mayapur.

Ever since the temple construction started, devotees and pilgrims have wanted to visit the site and see for themselves the magnificence of the grandest temple built in Iskcon's history. When the main temple room floor took shape, the opportunity to come on site presented itself and we wanted to mark a special day to open it up. Inviting Srila Prabhupada on his disappearance day was the perfect plan so we cordially invited all to come and fill the temple with kirtan and joy.

When everyone was in, and Srila Prabhupada had taken center stage, the temple looked surprisingly sparse! At least 500 devotees had come on the parikrama and this number of people usually fills up the existing temple, especially on a festival Sunday. The great magnitude was a surprise for one and all, especially the residents of Mayapur who see the project every day.

After Srila Prabhupada circumambulated the center 3 times, he and the party proceeded to the samadhi for the rest of the celebrations.

Srila Prabhupada Ki Jaya!

Thank you to all who came and shared this wonderful occasion with us!

^^ Yeah but dunno if 'converted' is the right word...sounds a bit old age! And each one of them is different in his/her own approach! Some are real devotees and others are drawn to Hindu spirituality and arts etc! The aim is to perpetuate millenia's old traditions and culture! :)

TOVP Rising - Seen from a distance!

kaviraj, thanks for the pictures and update. I just have concern about the temple. They are only using concrete to build the temple , which is against the original plan. The original plan envisaged use of stone and this concrete structure is looking more like a commercial building.

There is much more than concrete, we just have to wait. Phase 1 only of the entire project is nearing completion so I'm sure there will be more to come in the coming months. As you can see in the pictures, the temple after completion will be very beautiful and huge with a myriad of colors, materials, designs, carvings and landscaping. ;)

The original plan was scrapped in 2006 to make way for this one. The older design was costing too much and the geographical aspect of Mayapur was causing some concerns.
Also, the original design was totally different from what Srila Prabupadha wanted as a temple back in the early 70's when he first talked about his plans. The huge dome-shaped structure housing the planetarium is the centerpiece and main concept of the temple!

Altar Concepts

The concept for the altars of the ToVP are as follows: On the left is the Guru Parampara from Srila Prabhupada to the Six Goswamis. In the middle is Sri Panchatattva, and on the right is Sri Sri Radha Madhava. This is the order given by Srila Prabhupada's instructions and in the back are gallery levels with content from the Sri Brihat Bhagavatamrita. Before the altars will be a gigantic kirtan hall where all will be able to sing and dance for the pleasure of Their Lordships.

Concept for Srila Prabhupada's sryngasana in the TOVP

The Temple of the Vedic Planetarium is coming up due to the devotional efforts of His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada, the Founder-Acarya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness. His mürti will sit at the temple entrance facing the beautiful Pancha-tattva Deities, seated on a carved wooden gold-plated vyasasana with lions on each of its four corners, supported by four carved elephants and accessible by its
own series of steps. Six columns will hold the top sryngasana, an artistic masterpiece made of marble, metal, plaster and wood with inlaid marble designs.

Temple Room Interior - Render

Temple room interior concept showing kirtan hall, deity house, surrounding ascending galleries of exhibits, and representation of Sisumara charkra on the inlaid marble floor. Description of Sisumara from Srimad Bhagavatam 5.23.3
"When bulls are yoked together and tied to a central post to thresh rice, they tread around that pivot without deviating from their proper positions — one bull being closest to the post, another in the middle, and a third on the outside. Similarly, all the planets and all the hundreds and thousands of stars revolve around the polestar, the planet of Mahārāja Dhruva, in their respective orbits, some higher and some lower. Fastened by the Supreme Personality of Godhead to the machine of material nature according to the results of their fruitive acts, they are driven around the polestar by the wind and will continue to be so until the end of creation. These planets float in the air within the vast sky, just as clouds with hundreds of tons of water float in the air or as the great śyena eagles, due to the results of past activities, fly high in the sky and have no chance of falling to the ground."

Welcoming Entrances

Here is a 3D rendition of the different entrances surrounding the temple. The main entrance will be looking straight at the temple from the Jalangi River, and to the East, another entrance will be from Tarunpur Road. In these pictures you can also see the view from the Grhasta community, and a birds-eye-view of the piazza-like grounds in front of the temple doors.

Showing the Way

http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2012-02-17/news/31070799_1_ambarish-das-alfred-ford-henry-ford

Alfred Ford (re-christened Ambarish Das), an American heir to Ford fortune and the great grandson of legendary businessman Henry Ford, visited the Institute of Leadership Entrepreneurship and Development (iLead) Kolkata campus to interact with the students and teachers.

He gave an inspirational talk on the Indian influence of spiritualism in his life and his association with ISKCON. He is a devotee of Lord Krishna, a pure vegetarian, married to a Bengali woman and embraced Hindu spiritualism wholeheartedly.

After coming to India he became a disciple of Lord Krishna and is presently the campaign chairman of Mayapur Temple of Vedic Planetarium. Ford has many ongoing projects out of which one is establishing the largest Hindu temple in the world.

Ford tried to explain to the students that happiness always did not mean material success. One should always pursue ones happiness through good work. Spiritual satisfaction is way greater than material satisfaction.

Festival Season Arrives

For this year's festival, almost five hundred devotees from around the world had gathered, and Prabhupada – while taking his morning walk in the nearby fields, while entering the temple of Radha-Madhava, or while lecturing from the Caitanya-caritamrta – was the central attractive feature. Each morning after giving the class, he would circumambulate the temple room, followed by his disciples. A brass bell hung from the ceiling on either side of the Deities' altar, and Prabhupada, while circumambulating the Deities, would go up to one of the bells and ring it several times, pulling the rope while kirtana continued wildly. Then with cane in hand, he would walk around the back of the Deity altar and emerge on the other side to ring the other bell.

The devotees would jump up and down close around him, singing Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare / Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare. Smiling with great pleasure, Prabhupada would continue the length of the temple room to the first bell again and strongly ring it. After half a dozen such blissful circumambulations, he would leave the temple, while the kirtana continued to roar. Coming out into the bright morning sunshine, he would walk up the broad staircase to his room.

Prabhupada again supervised the annual meeting of his Governing Body Commission and personally approved or modified all their decisions. ISKCON was indeed growing, but as Prabhupada had told his friend, the aged Gopala Acarya, in Madres, "Krsna and Krsna's institution are non-different. If the devotees are thinking of Krsna's institution, they will not forget Krsna."

By insisting on the devotees' participation in the annual Indian pilgrimage, Prabhupada was solidifying the spiritual basis of ISKCON, his transcendental institution. To gather his devotees like this was the reason he had prayed and struggled to erect centers in the dhamas. He wanted to extend the purifying shelter of Mayapur and Vrndavana to all his followers, now and in the future. Bit by bit, the plan was coming together; the whole world was being saved by Lord Caitanya's movement.

Never before seen design sketches!

http://tovp.org/images/stories/news/banyan_lg.jpg

The artists and architects have been hard at work designing the temple to make it look more beautiful than any other in the world. Their sketches fill the art room walls with color and wonder, sastric books are stacked high on the large conference table for reference and drawing materials are strewn about as if a tornado hit the room. We have been anxiously waiting for some approved sketches to show all of you what 'out of this world' progress is being made, and now, for your pleasure, we have some. First, we have the temple room floor. Here it shows the banyan tree as Srila Prabhupada described "with roots upwards". On this tree you will be able to see two parrots sitting on the branches; one is enjoying a mango and the other is just observing. The circle around it is filled with the 27 Nakshatra stars and 12 zodiac signs, and will be polished brass set into marble. The stars are from the Southern Cross and this all represents the Kalachakra. Next is Srila Prabhupada's Vyasasana. The concept for it came from the Mysore Palace throne in which the history of the remarkable throne is quite exciting. According to one tradition, the throne belonged to King Yudhisthira and was in Hastinapura. Kampilaraya brought this throne from Hastinapura to Penugonda, now in Andhra Pradesh, where it was kept underground. However, in 1336 AD, Vidyaranya, the royal preceptor of the Vijayanagar kings, showed the spot where it was buried to Harihara I, one of the founders of the Vijayanagar Empire, who retrieved the throne. The map under the vyasasana shows Srila Prabhupada's travels while the white elephants on the sides represent his “white elephant disciples” in India. On top you will see the ToVP perched on the foundation of the teachings of His Divine Grace, and again the inside reverts back to the Kalachakra.

http://tovp.org/images/stories/news/sketches-1/ScanImage-002.jpg

The last images are of the changing bodies/species. These will be placed on either side of the clock (Kalachakra) just above the entrance to the temple. The drawings were derived from the old BBT pictures and will be colored with mosaic tiles.

Going Green with LED Lighting

LED lighting is a 50 year old technology but has developed and become more popular in the last 12 year. Essentially this type of lighting consumes lower energy, produces less heat, has a longer lifespan and gives off a brighter glow than a regular light bulb.

The lighting industry is now focusing all of their attention on LED and one of the main reasons is that they emanate zero pollution; they are 100% GREEN and none toxic like regular bulbs. We are obtaining our supply from right here in India which produces some of the finest LED light and uses the best chips from the U.S and Japan.

It's the light for the future and we will be using this technology for both inside and outside the ToVP.

Construction of Main Dome Underway

Some ToVP photographers recently took photos of the super structure.

The first photo is the latest view from Navadwip. You can really appreciate the temple's size compared to the Samadhi from this shot. The second photo is from the Grhasta area and the third is from the top of the Vaishnava Academy near the goshala. These show different views of the structure from different vantage points on our campus. The magnitude of the temple is clear from every direction. The last photo is one taken from the very top of the Samadhi. Our very own Girigoverdhan Prabhu went to extreme measures just to make sure he could snap the best scene. In this photo, you can see the main dome beginning to take shape. The supporting columns have begun and will rise an additional 40ft before the dome structure takes shape. It's very exciting to see the metal and cement slowly transform into the main dome!

The Rise of the Main Dome

Over the years, the crew at the ToVP has been working diligently to build the super structure. Artists, architects and engineers have poured over designs while others have been charged with important decision-making to ensure the progress of this project. It is indeed a labor of love. The latest photo of the front view of the construction exquisitely captures the grandeur of the temple. It showcases the development of the main dome as it takes shape and rises from ground level. As you can see, by Lord Caitanya's mercy the dream of this temple is becoming a reality.

ToVP Goes Green

The ToVP has garnered much attention as the manifestation of a vision to unite the world in Krishna consciousness. The very size of the structure demands regard. Embellishments and ornamentation will be intricate designs of beauty. The additional attractions the temple will house, like the Vedic chandelier, are in themselves conceptions of divinity. Progressive planning is a feature of the ToVP and this extends to its intended energy supply.

The Electrical Engineering Department is considering types of alternative energy and is conceiving of ways to use as much green energy as possible in the new temple. Currently, Krishna Kumara Prabhu is working on a prototype to harness hydro-kinetic energy. The logistics are incredible as the Ganga would be employed as the energy source. A floating turbine would be placed deep in the river and would rotate slowly. This would initiate the regular chain of events with electricity being the end result. The research has been thorough and a significant point of deliberation has been to ensure that the aquatic life in the Ganga will remain undisturbed. Procedures have been successfully implemented to prevent a disruption in the natural habitat.

The feasibility of this endeavor is encouraging and the Indian government has been supportive and cooperative. The auspiciousness of using the holy Ganga as the new temple's source of energy is beyond exciting. One can only feel inspired to use their own energy in service to Mahaprabhu's mission.

New Nursery at TOVP

With the super-structure rising at an accelerated pace, the management at the ToVP is now beginning new projects to accommodate this progress. A nursery has been started at the Jagannath Mandir. There are currently 3000 trees there with another 2000 expected. A full-time caretaker tends to the plants and ToVP devotees regularly visit to check on them. Many varieties have been ordered, including coconut trees, flowering trees and lush bushes, and they will be integral to the ToVP Master Landscape Design. As the super-structure continues to grow, so will the trees They will be large enough at the time of transplanting to readily accentuate the beauty of the new temple and the improved ISKCON Mayapur campus. While plans for the exterior are underway, similarly the decor for the interior is in motion. To help in overcoming any obstacles in moving and carrying the adornments to the temple, the ToVP has recently acquired a new forklift. This will be used for relocating heavy items, like the marble, from their temporary holding sites. Now the fun is really beginning as the ToVP devotees work on the garnishes for the new temple.

New Crane and More Steel

Action at the ToVP is creating a stir as onlookers stop and watch the new crane being assembled. This crane will reach more than 100 M, the second of the pair now on site to build the large domes. The road between the ToVP and the adjacent Long building has been temporarily blocked off as the large pieces of the crane are hoisted into the air and slowly put together to build the epic piece of machinery. While the crane is being erected in preparation for the domes achieving new heights, so are new materials being brought in with the same intentions. New stainless steel has arrived from Delhi and it will be used for the gigantic domes adorning the new temple. The next step is putting it together and watching the steel transform into these landmark domes.

Labor of Love - Update from TOVP Art Department

The art department has made amazing progress since beginning the clay figures of the parampara. Plaster molds are being made of the finished clay models and will then be cast in fiberglass. The fiberglass figures will be used as visuals to establish the best placement of each on the altar. Pandals will be built inside the new temple and will be used as temporary altars so the team can adjust the positioning of the murtis. These molds will also serve as samples to check the accuracy of their representations. Once the fiberglass figures are perfected and approved, they will be cast in bronze.

Members of the art department work continuously to maintain the integrity of this endeavor. Bhaskara Prabhu visits the site daily and is often joined by Drdha Vrata Das and Manju Laksita Devi Dasi. They also regularly collaborate with Jananivas Prabhu and Pankajanghri Prabhu. The two pujaris understand the moods of the acharyas and help the artists and sculptures capture these expressive nuances.

Research concerning the elements of the finishing work for the temple has also begun. In this regard, marble carvings have been done by local carvers using the white marble purchased from Vietnam. A sample done in clay by Manju Laksita Devi Dasi was copied onto the marble. The ToVP devotees were impressed with the subtlety of the craftsmanship as well as the quality of the marble. The carving is a prototype for future attempts and has stimulated the creative flow of the artists. What will they come up with next?!

Main dome update

Construction of the main dome has reached a pivotal point, the third and final ring is being cast. Once completed, the actual dome shape will take form from this last layer of foundation. The dome will be made of stainless steel and will reach a height of 35 M, or 115 feet, above the final ring. This dome marks the centerpiece of the temple. Devotees exposed daily to the images of what this temple will look like upon completion find it surreal to have a live view of the progress in action. It is amazing to watch the skeleton of this structure shape into the vision of our previous acharyas.

It's that time of year again! The air is perfumed with the scents of celebrations as the locals honor Durga puja. This is one of the largest festivals in West Bengal. The nights are filled with a buffet of sounds while music and fireworks commemorate the occasion. As custom, pandals are built to showcase the deities to their adoring crowds. This year, many groups have used the ToVP as their inspiration and have modeled their pandals in its likeness. Several photos were sent capturing this recognition amongst the public. The ToVP's distinction both as an architectural marvel and a spiritual haven have earned it a place in the hearts of many. The diversity of its impact is appreciated and the acknowledgment of its reach unites devotees in the promise of global spiritual awakening. Jai Nitai!

Tourism department should promote this wonderful structure as part of their religious- tourism circuit...ISKON still has a large number of foreign devotees..

Indeed...pilgrimages and religious tourism would provide many benefits to the area and to the religion as a whole. From a huge rice field to a modern day religious capital, this would constitute a major leap forward.

Ford scion to sponsor largest ISCKON temple in WB
Funded by Alfred Brush Ford; the 4,25,000 sqft temple will be 300 metre high, expected to be thrown open in 2016

West Bengal might be starved of big investment, but the spiritual heritage of the state is making up for it.

Alfred Brush Ford, a fourth-generation member of America's well-known Ford family, is investing in his dream project in the state.

The great grandson of the legendary businessman and founder of Ford Motor company, Henry Ford, is at the forefront of financing ISKCON (International Society of Krishna Consciousness) to build the world's largest vedic temple, the Chandrodaya Mandir, at Mayapur in the Nadia district of West Bengal. The largest ever construction project of ISKCON, is going to see an estimated investment of about $75 million.

"Srila Prabhupada envisioned this temple. I am happy to contribute for this dream project. This is going to be for people. This will make people from all over the world visit Mayapur, the birthplace of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu," Alfred Brush Ford, who is also the Chairman of the upcoming Sri Mayapur Chandrodaya Mandir, said. The scion of the Ford family had joined ISKCON decades ago.

The 4,25,000 sqft temple will be 300 metre high and is expected to be thrown open in 2016. According ISKCON officials, Queen of England, President of USA and President of India would be present for the inauguration of the temple in 2016.

While the scion of the Ford family who joined International Society for Krishna Consciousness several decades ago, is providing the about 40% of the fund, for the rest ISKCON has launched "donate a sqft' programme.

"The cost of 2,50,00 sqft is being funded by Ford. For the rest we are inviting people bear the cost of one sqft each, which would be Rs 7,000," an ISCKON official said.

World's largest Vedic temple to be ready by 2016, says Iskcon

Kolkata, Feb 25, 2013 (IANS):
The International Society of Krishna Consciousness (Iskcon) Monday said the world's largest Vedic temple 'Chandrodaya Mandir', which is under construction at West Bengal's Mayapur, would be inaugurated in 2016.

The 340-foot-high temple, being constructed at a cost of about $75 million or about Rs.37.5 crore at the birthplace of 16th century saint and social reformer Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in Nadia district, will be a centre of Vedic knowledge, culture and science, Iskcon officials said.

Construction work for the temple, dedicated to the worship of Lord Krishna, started in 2010.

Alfred Brush Ford, scion of US automobile pioneer Henry Ford, who has shouldered the responsibility of financing the first phase of the construction, told reporters here that the Chandrodaya temple would be a world class of attraction, bringing visitors from around the globe.

Ford, who is also the chairman of the temple, said: "This historic project does not belong to any community or an individual but to the entire human race."
ISKON officials said the temple spread across 425,000 square feet will also boast a state of the art 75-feet tall domed planetarium theatre, the largest in India.

"The temple will be built at a total cost of $75 million, in which about $35 million has already been donated by Ford. The construction work will be completed by 2016," an Iskcon official said.

"We will invite the US president along with the Indian president to inaugurate the huge temple," he added.

Why is the construction going so slow.

They are having budget problems. After the initial funds given by Alfred ford, they have not had much luck securing the remaining funds, so they are slowing down while they save up.

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised. There's money coming in constantly, but God only knows where it all goes.
