latinamerican October 16th, 2004, 09:56 PM Sorry, but my question have been always: Where is the Athens skyline?????
zafiris October 17th, 2004, 01:42 PM This is central Athens. People build everywhere! They do not even have a tree! I give it 0.
Mr. T October 17th, 2004, 04:32 PM I think this is more to rate the city not the skyline since Athens does not have a real "skyline"
Genç October 17th, 2004, 05:07 PM That's true, but then again, this section is titled "Rate our Skylines." ;)
yellow October 18th, 2004, 09:06 PM Please delete this post. THERE ARE NO SKYSCRAPERS AT ALL. ALL HOUSES ARE MADE OF MUD AND STONE. 0 is all i can give.
yellow October 18th, 2004, 09:12 PM Perhaps this is a good place for voting 0.
julesstoop October 18th, 2004, 11:13 PM It looks terrible but quite urban.
Jheef October 19th, 2004, 05:10 AM skyline? where? 1/10
Hed Kandi October 19th, 2004, 12:35 PM i give it a 10 for not having a skyline.
Which is amazing for a western City of this size.
:weirdo:
Justme October 19th, 2004, 12:39 PM All cities have a skyline, as does Athens. It's just not a dramatic skyline.
For skyline, I give it 2/10. It would be a lot higher if it at least had some spires or something.
But overall, I don't think these pictures look bad, the city is dense, and is compact, yet spreads like a blanket over the surrounding landscape, it actually looks quite cool to me.
8/10 for the photo's.
amsterdam! October 19th, 2004, 02:20 PM nice pictures, but there are no high buildings! haha
3tmk October 19th, 2004, 03:11 PM the photos are excellent.
As for the skyline, it isn't really visible because of all the "white" roofs, but I'll give it a 5, the Parthenon is enough for a skyline IMO.
Mr. T October 19th, 2004, 05:03 PM Please delete this post. THERE ARE NO SKYSCRAPERS AT ALL. ALL HOUSES ARE MADE OF MUD AND STONE. 0 is all i can give.
Show me a house made of mud in Athens and I will show you a pig that can fly. :weirdo:
LEAFS FAN October 19th, 2004, 07:26 PM Show me a house made of mud in Athens and I will show you a pig that can fly. :weirdo:
Hey gocaps,
Let the fucker say what he wants. The reason that his name is yellow is because he is an ignorant COWARD!
We know the truth about Athens so let people like yellow say their shit and they will eventually disappear as does the turd when it is flushed down the toilet!
Take care file!
princ3 October 21st, 2004, 01:56 AM i think it's a beautiful city , the place where culture was born but for the skyline i couldn't vote more than 4
Christos7 November 1st, 2004, 04:45 AM we don't have any comparable modern skylines to other cities... :(
I hope we get some soon. lol
http://www.athensguide.com/lykavittos/04.JPG
This one makes up for it alot of the times though. :)
Chibcha2k November 1st, 2004, 09:17 AM a damn lot behind from the rest of the world in terms of skyline
...doesn't even apply for a grade LoL
SeeMacau November 2nd, 2004, 06:48 AM Nice pictures .. but I cannot see the skyline although I know there are some skyscrapesr in Athens. Can't see it from the pics !!
5/10
zafiris December 22nd, 2004, 02:20 PM The best view of Athens is not from Acropolis but from Lycavittus hill in the center of the city. It is 277m and roughly it is the equivalent of Eiffel Tower height.
http://www.athensguide.com/lykavittos/09.JPG
The large curved building in the center is the Hilton Hotel. In front of that are the buildings of Evangelismos Hospital. The area behind the forest is Panapistimopoulos which is the Univerisity Town. Mount Hymettos, Kessariani, Vironas and Illioupolis are in the background. Kolonaki is in the foreground. How many swimming pools can you count?
http://www.athensguide.com/lykavittos/10.JPG
The hill in the background is Galatsi. The line of large buildings running horizontally in the center are on Alexandras Avenue and the tiled roofs you see in the green area are the courts. Just above the roof of the cafe is the parking lot for the ampitheater. Probably the best place to see a concert in Athens
http://www.athensguide.com/lykavittos/02.JPG
They say the cafe on the top of Lykavittos is pretty good. I have never eaten there. This photo was taken in January of 2001 and as you can see it was a warm sunny day. If it is a windy day in Athens then it will be very windy up here so bring a sweater
http://www.athensguide.com/lykavittos/03.JPG
Looking towards the Athens Tower towards Agia Paraskevis. The low flat building surrounded by trees is the US Embassy and the large building to the left if the Megaron Music Hall. The apartment buildings in the lower right corner is the top of Kolonaki.
http://www.athensguide.com/lykavittos/04.JPG
The large buildings left of center are around Syntagma Square. The larges one is the Grande Bretagne. To the left and in front of them is the Parliment building. Beyond is the Acropolis and Faliron. The large building that takes up an entire block is where EOT (Greek National Tourist Organization) have their offices, but their information booth is somewhere off in Ambelokipi where nobody can find it.
http://www.athensguide.com/lykavittos/05.JPG
The center if the National Gardens and the Zappion building. The Parliment is on the right as is Syntagma Square. You can see the Temple of Olympian Zeus in the upper right corner of the gardens. To the left is the old Olympic Stadium and Arditos Hill. Kolonaki is in the foreground. You can see Aegina in the distance but on a clear day you can see lots of islands and the mountains of the Peloponessos
http://www.athensguide.com/lykavittos/06.JPG
Looking towards the University and Panapistimiou Street. The area beyond is Votanikos, Egalio and Peristeri. The tall buildings on the far right are in Omonia Square and the large avenue you see is Agios Konstantinos

normandb January 31st, 2005, 06:15 AM 0/10 very beautiful and very clean. i rate it 0 because there is 0 skyline :)
Lex January 31st, 2005, 07:42 AM Just in case you didn't know, yes, Athens has no skyline. The reason is that there is a height restriction limit on the city in order to preserve the view of that 'little marble thing' on top of that 'little hill' - some refere to it as the cradle of civilisation. That IS the skyline.
For that reason, whenever I have time to wander around central Athens, I am happy to see the little tribute to western civilisation practically wherever I stand.
Czas na Żywiec January 31st, 2005, 08:35 AM Athens is a gorgeous city. It might have no skyscrapers, but just the history, atmosphere, and sheer size of it is amazing and puts it into a different league. I've never visited it, but it's high up on my list of places to go to before I die. ;)
Anyone have any street level photos? The aerial shots are amazing, but it looks just like this huge sea of white lol.
SkylineTurbo January 31st, 2005, 12:12 PM 10, I can see the point of view by saying there is no skyline, but it looks nice and seems to look nice.
GuilhermeC January 31st, 2005, 07:13 PM So what it doesn't have skyscrapers? That's the beauty of it. Athens is a remarkable city. I love it!
7,5/10

Victoria February 24th, 2005, 06:51 PM Athens is a awesome city and one of the most beautiful!!! 10/10. :banana2:
fierce_latino February 24th, 2005, 07:53 PM Beautyful city, i love how sooo many buildings are white, and the acropolis in the center just looks amazing, but there is no real skyline. As a city id vote it a 7/10, but this is a skyline rating, thus i have to give it a 0/10.
KulasKusgan February 25th, 2005, 02:17 PM beautiful city. 0 skyline
Talisker February 25th, 2005, 11:23 PM The overall panorama is mindblowing, without so much as a hint of a traditional skyline. But like so many others have pointed out, this is a 'rate our skylines' section, therefore it shouldn't get more than 4/10.
Mirza February 26th, 2005, 09:39 PM not much of a skyline... but still looks great
andysimo123 March 3rd, 2005, 12:14 AM In terms of skyline there isnt one but the city looks good.
SoboleuS March 15th, 2005, 09:06 AM The city looks great but is extremally flat ;):D
5/10 - only because of The Parthenon.
MattSal May 31st, 2005, 05:18 PM No true skyline, but some talls here and there. I give it a 5.5/10.
NavyBlue June 1st, 2005, 10:34 AM With regards to skyline, only the Parthenon saves this city from a big fat zero.
3/10 is the best I can do - and that's being generous.
Dortmund2512 June 1st, 2005, 02:06 PM athen is a great city but it don't have a skyline!
sts June 1st, 2005, 02:43 PM Really impressive!

oakland_PA June 1st, 2005, 08:37 PM I think Athens looks great! it's a beautiful mediterrenean city with full of history...
oxidan June 2nd, 2005, 03:39 AM athens has the most known skyscraper in the world!! well after NY and Paris!!!
R@ptor June 2nd, 2005, 03:44 AM athens has the most known skyscraper in the world!! well after NY and Paris!!!
?????????????
Athens has no skyscrapers...just smaller highrises!
UZWEEM August 5th, 2005, 12:41 AM The definition of a skyline is NOT "the view of a city's skyscrapers". A skyline is simply the expansive view of a city seen from a distant point - usually outside the city. No matter how short the buildings are, a city with any buildings, by definition, has a skyline.
Now, as for Athens, I think it is a beautiful city, based on these pictures. I love the fact that it has almost no skyscrapers. Why does every city need to be the same? Athen's unusual skyline is exactly what makes it so special. I'll give it a 10/10.
Zarkon August 6th, 2005, 11:45 PM 4.5 for the skyline
9 for the city :)
peterdn September 1st, 2005, 06:59 PM 9.5/10 Fantastic city.
crazyeight September 1st, 2005, 10:48 PM I just love Greece! Athens it a great city...10/10. Skyline: 7.5/10 but it's beautiful the way it is
El_Greco September 1st, 2005, 11:19 PM 3.5
Raleigh-NC September 2nd, 2005, 03:18 PM Athens is not a skyline city, much like Washington, DC; the latter makes lots of people drool, though  Athens experienced several earthquakes in the past, which "scared" developers and forced smaller/shorter buildings to become the norm. Like most European cities - there are many exceptions, I know - Athens built density more than height. Skylinewise, Athens falls short, at best, but it does have some nice high-rises scattered around. Personally, I do not expect this pattern to change in the nearest future :( Regardless, Athens has gone a long way from the uncontrolled growth of the 50's, 60's and 70's and today it is a pretty nice [big] city. It is not my cup of tea, but I've seen less interesting [major] European cities during my travels. For the skyline, I give Athens a 3/10; for its urbanity, I give it 8.5/10.
Giorgio September 2nd, 2005, 04:08 PM Heres a great saying tht you should all have thought off before voting considering athens skyline...
ANY CITY CAN HAVE A SKYSCRAPER...
ONLY ONE HAS AN ACROPOLIS!
the acropolis sits 150m high its tall enough to be a skyscraper
Giorgio September 2nd, 2005, 04:24 PM ?????????????
Athens has no skyscrapers...just smaller highrises!
lol, hes refering to the acropolis
Köbtke September 2nd, 2005, 06:03 PM Heres a great saying tht you should all have thought off before voting considering athens skyline...
ANY CITY CAN HAVE A SKYSCRAPER...
ONLY ONE HAS AN ACROPOLIS!
the acropolis sits 150m high its tall enough to be a skyscraper
No, the rock it sits on is high enough to be a scyscraper. The Acropolis itself is high enough to be a garden shed ;) (I am kidding - shouldn't the subtle wink have led you onto it)
As far as artificial skylines goes, Athens doesn't have much, if anything, to offer. But skylines doesn't make or break a good city.
pali September 3rd, 2005, 01:09 AM is there anything proposed for Athen?..
anyways i'll give 6 since there is no skyscraper.
peace..
Exiled Archangel September 13th, 2005, 04:32 AM Please don't get me wrong because ego eimai tourkos malakas, but I happen to think Athina is not a beautiful city at all.. Plaka, Syntagma, Glyfado-Voula, and maybe Kolonaki... What else? I prefer Pireaus and Thessaloniki.
Khanabadosh September 13th, 2005, 07:56 PM Athens is a unique and wonderful city having rich history. Athens needs not skyscraper to get recognition.
ZOHAR December 12th, 2005, 03:09 PM no skyline 3/10
Giorgio December 12th, 2005, 03:19 PM is there anything proposed for Athen?..
anyways i'll give 6 since there is no skyscraper.
peace..
There would be proposals IF they were allowed!
There is an 8 storey hieght limit meaning people dont even propose things. If this was lifted, There would be a wonderful skyling as Athens is home to many corporations.
ZOHAR December 12th, 2005, 03:29 PM but why they no build in other greek cities?
Giorgio December 13th, 2005, 03:17 PM Because they can just build all the lowrises in Athens. The Land is also cheap and Athens is a huge hub in the balkans so they want to stay there not in salonica or Patras or kavala.
Shayan_m December 31st, 2005, 12:45 PM Skyline 0/10

10/10
LMCA1990 April 27th, 2006, 08:46 AM 8/10- great denity and imply beautiful. i think that athens will be ruined with skyscrapers.
Giorgio April 27th, 2006, 08:56 AM Well not that it would make a diffrence since most people here have rated 0 because of the 'lack of skyline' but here in 20 years Athens will have a brilliant skyline in the Northern Financial Suburb of Maroussi:

Cerises April 27th, 2006, 08:59 AM As an Athenian I happen to like the city with no "real" skyline. Would I mind a few skyscrapers out side of the city center? Yes and no, I'm still thinking about that one! I still think that Athens is a very unique and beautiful city even without the skyscrapers. The culture, the historical sites, the modern buildings.. something for everyone! The pictures that have been posted are really beautiful but you have to also experience Athens at street level and of course from the Acropolis or Lycabittus point of view! Simply amazing! I give the city a 9.5 (only because I think there is room for some improvements).

dannyboy July 14th, 2008, 06:53 PM Athens Greece is amusingly beautiful. A city does not have to have askyline to be beautiful. There are many other things that makes a great city beautiful, and Athens is one of them.
Skyline 2/10
And I hope it never gets a skyscraper because it would destroy Athena's essence.
Instead a financial district outside of Athens would be nice.

For the skyline: 5.
Because it's a nice city, doesn't need large towers.

KONSTANTINOUPOLIS January 6th, 2009, 07:15 PM Skyline? In Athens? Where? The white city hasn't skyline, only old and small houses.
What do you mean old and small houses?
First of all, old are those in the city center, the new are in the suburbs, like many cities in the world.
Second, those are aparment buldings, we don't have commie-blocks in Hellas unlike many other places in the world.
Btw in Valencia where do you live? In what kind of buildings and you are speaking about "small houses"?

RaySthlm January 24th, 2011, 01:27 PM wtf?
:weird: Yeah, Athen has old buildings, its an old city etc etc. I don't rank this city on culture, tradition etc. I rank the SKYLINE, which is horrible, looks really horrible in my eyes, but if you like white, 2-6 storey concrete buildings all over the city, that's your taste, you like Leeds skyline so am not surprised :D. Anyway, I stick with my 1 out of 10 for my rank of the SKYLINE for this city. If you gave it 10 out of 10, then that's your cup of tea.
I am sorry Christos-greece, you seem to be a good person with only nice things to say about other cities, so it feels bad to give a bad score, K, I give it 6 out of 10 just for you :). I like Greek food though, and one of my friend is half Greek :).

mossimoh April 27th, 2011, 10:36 PM Beautiful ancient city! But to rate the skyline ..4/10
Mr.WonderfulCity August 27th, 2011, 09:24 PM From the air, the city looks very beautiful. In a couple of weeks, I will be able to say what it looks like from the ground. Yes, I am going to Greece for my holidays (and to Turkey and Cyprus as well, but most part of my one-month vacations will be spent in Greece, with about four days dedicated to Athens). Sorry all you people that said this city is full of old buildings, but to me they look very new for European standards (and opposite to the ones built all over the Old Continent in the 60s and 70s, they look beautiful and very pleasant; they seem to be good places to live). Athens seems to have been built with order and with severe rules of urbanism (the lack of skyscrapers is a sign of it). Of course I may be wrong, as I have never been there and all I can say is from what I see on pictures. Someone on this thread said that the transportation system before the Olympic Games was very bad. Now I guess things are better, with new subway and tram lines. And it looks prosperous, though I know right now times are tough, but I hope the situation will change for the best in a few years. And last but not least: for the ones that say Athens has no skyline, I must remind you that "skyline" is not a synonym to "skyscraper". You are confusing the two words. You may not like its skyline because it doesn't have many skyscrapers, but it HAS a skyline - like it or not. And remember we're talking about a European city (and one of the biggest ones of the continent - I guess it's the 6th or 7th one), where the cities, with a very few exceptions (like London, Frankfurt and Moscow) lack skyscrapers. So my advice is: if you want to see highrises, you'd better turn your eyes to other parts of the world, like North America and Asia.

potiz81 August 28th, 2011, 12:40 PM Amazing city, amazing history, amazing historic skyline !
Dianatomia August 28th, 2011, 06:02 PM There were laws passed, not allowing to build skyscrapers in Athens. There are some exceptions though. In short, the Athenians don't want skyscrapers to be the centerpiece of the city, but the historic monuments and the hills around them. The fact that Athens is in a seismic area also played an important factor.
The city is vast though. The northern suburbs are behind the mountains, about 20 km away from the center of Athens. They could build skyscrapers there. Don't think it would ruin the the view.
christos-greece August 29th, 2011, 10:55 AM ^^ In the "near" future that low might be changed or deleted; there are many opinions from different people who asking, want tall buildings in Athens...

What view? The view we see in the above photos? I am from greece (Παλαιο φαληρο) and it is painful to look at these images... really painful.
Athens is a concrete mess. Its not the fact that we dont have tall buildings, other european cities (even US ones Washinghton) have low rises, its the fact that 90% of these buildings are downright ugly as hell...
And I mean UGLY. For me both reasons for not allowing to build tall buildings in Athens are ridiculous. The main reasons are seismic activity and ancient monuments.
The first reason is ridiculous, because there are countries and cities with much more seismic activity than Athens, look at Tokyo, L.A. and many more. Compared to them Athens has no problems with earthquakes at all. Besides the new standards for building skyscrapers are much much much more secure and safe than the standards we build 90% of our low rise buildings... In short, those buildings we have are not as safe as modern skyscrapers during earthquakes.
the second reason, while I can understand it and I agree in part, it eventually becomes ridiculous as well. Yes the Acropolis has to be the center piece of Athens view and no high rise buildings or skyscrapers should be build in the vicinity of this monument so as not to overshadow it. I agree with that.
But why the hell cant we build a trade center (like most cities have) say 2 miles away from Acropolis? How is that going to affect Acropolis's view? in fact it will actually complement the Acropolis and make the city apear much better than this concrete mess of ugly buildings we have now...Athens is not the only city with ancient monuments... I dont see France or other countries limit their high rise buildings because they have a monument...yes protect the area around the monument, but building skyscrapers in a sensible distance from it is perfectly logical.
So...yes I am a Greek and I love my country but I wouldnt rate this skyline more than 1-2 out of 10.... I wish we could stop posing these stupid reasons and get to work. Athens NEEDS skyscrapers... Skyscrapers will create more areas to fill with some green and trees...
But anyway now we dont have money to buy bread, so yeah....maybe in another lifetime... :(

That exactly we saying in Greek sub forums about Athens. Athens needs skyscrapers and especially in these areas of Athens: Marousi (north suburb), Elaionas or Botanikos area, Hellinicon (the old airport)

čđđeůx December 9th, 2011, 12:38 AM I personally love Athens' skyline. I love the white buildings, love the density, love the surrounding mountains/hills, and love the patches of green that taint the city. Call me crazy, or agree whatever suits you best, but for these reasons I give Athens a 9/10.

First of all thanks and secondly our wishes (me and other Greek forumers) for 2012 is to have more taller buildings in Athens.
