Hillis October 17th, 2004, 07:29 AM Somewhere between 140 ~ 180 floors Skybean October 17th, 2004, 07:36 AM http://wgnradio.com/sports/photos/cb03skydomeplaque.jpg ^I'm guessing they are assuming a floor is 10 feet high. The CN Tower is 300+ feet taller from the sky pod observation deck. benji45 October 17th, 2004, 10:16 AM WOW! 147 stories! DrJoe October 17th, 2004, 04:28 PM yeah and thats just to the observation deck, so you could throw a few more on there Skybean October 24th, 2004, 08:54 AM http://www.civeng.carleton.ca/images/cntower.gif Accura4Matalan October 24th, 2004, 04:08 PM I wouldnt want the CN tower to be anything else. I really love it and it is symbolic of T.O around the world. p5archit October 25th, 2004, 04:43 PM I really think that the CN tower needs a bit of a cleaning. It is by far one of the most superior designed Radio Towers in the world-especially due to its massive amount of concrete.! But one thing i would really like to see is a transformation-maybe every 5-10 years, a transformation which for instance would see the entire structure covered in lights- like Tour Eiffel in Paris, or maybe easier and more outstanding painted PINK or glow in the dark colours..Camouflage..there are endless ideas we could do to put it back on the map... Lets be honest the CN tower has seen better days!! p5 salvius October 25th, 2004, 05:43 PM ^ It's been neglected, but it's back into the hands of the original owner so we might see some lights again. I'll tell you what really needs a scrub though: FCP. Whenever I point this building out, people complain about the colour. Surprisingly, a lot of people don't know it's just dirty. I wonder how expensive would it be? SD October 25th, 2004, 06:04 PM I really think that the CN tower needs a bit of a cleaning. Lets be honest the CN tower has seen better days!! p5 That would be great. Unfortunately it's pretty much never lit up now due to concern for migrating birds, which apparently migrate all year round. Byron October 25th, 2004, 09:14 PM That would be great. Unfortunately it's pretty much never lit up now due to concern for migrating birds, which apparently migrate all year round. Yep, as much as I love the environment, this whole 'never light up buildings' argument has really gotten out of hand, and as you pointed out, it's borderline ridiculous. vid October 25th, 2004, 11:44 PM That's the problem with white. The smallest bit of dirt and it's ruined. Why do you think I got a black phone/computer/CDplayer/ various other electronics? You dan't have to worry about the dirt :tongue3: benji45 October 26th, 2004, 01:54 AM Why would you get dirt on your computer? Do you take it out in the mud? vid October 26th, 2004, 02:57 AM Why would you get dirt on your computer? Do you take it out in the mud? Grime and stuff buiilds up over time. Dust and dirt hands, expecially on the phone. We have a white phone that's sort of a dark beige now, but was white :P We have a blue one that eventually turned a murky puke yellow :P SD October 26th, 2004, 03:17 AM Yep, as much as I love the environment, this whole 'never light up buildings' argument has really gotten out of hand, and as you pointed out, it's borderline ridiculous. I agree...I don't see why it shouldn't be lit up mid summer and mid winter. VAN-TO October 26th, 2004, 03:41 AM I was at the CN Tower climb on Saturday, & the view at 5:00a.m. is absolutely breathtaking. KGB October 26th, 2004, 04:36 AM I happen to like raw concrete...very old and noble material when used right. It also takes on a nice patina with age too. I actually like the CN Tower's concrete, as it shows the strata of each slipform layer. The big patches that are filled with concrete that doesn't match doesn't look good though...it can be, and should be treated to blend in so you can't notice it. As far as FCP...well, that marble is certainly a beautiful and luxurious material...props for them using it....and this marble ages very nicely...in fact, I would say it looks much better with the patina of time than when it's new. The problem is, this can only be appreciated from close range....when it's so far away like on the facade of a huge skyscraper like FCP, it just registers as a nasty shade of light grey. Maybe it wasn't such a great idea? I imagine it's much harder to clean this material than say the limestone you find on most old 1920's skyscrapers? It needs to be cleaned or replaced...not cheap either way I guess. KGB bizorky November 5th, 2004, 07:46 AM I agree. FCP looks much better up close. Although in certain light, I 've noticed that the marble has almost a soft silver patina when viewed at a distance. Dr. Dubai November 5th, 2004, 02:08 PM yeah, it's a pretty tall tower, and very also beautiful empersouf November 5th, 2004, 04:41 PM That base is soooooooooooo huge. vid November 5th, 2004, 07:20 PM CN Tower should have something like ESB, where it's lit up in different colours depending on the day. Red and White for Canada day, Red and Green for Christmas, etc. And a light blue for every other day when there isn't anything going on. A light bl;ue would be a nice contrast to the murky yellow from the office towers. Homer J. Simpson November 5th, 2004, 08:03 PM I liked it when both the CN Tower and the skydome were both lit up in the same colours like they were a few years back. Skybean November 6th, 2004, 02:00 AM Bird Friendly For the birds... During the spring and fall migrations, birds tend to travel in large numbers, often flying at night or in bad weather. During these times, the Tower shuts off all unnecessary lights which would otherwise attract and endanger the birds. Of course, we don't shut everything down -- we leave on the flashing lights so planes know where we are. This is part of the Fatal Light Awareness Program (FLAP), an independent, volunteer-driven group that works to prevent migratory birds from colliding with windows and large human-built structures such as skyscrapers. According to FLAP, 10,000 birds are killed or injured every year in Toronto's downtown core. Simple measures such as turning out lights at night can help prevent the death of these birds. FLAP volunteers meet with building owners, managers and tenants to inform them about the plight of the birds and to show them how they can make their buildings bird-friendly. They also collect birds that are killed and injured by nocturnal collisions in the downtown core. http://www.cntower.ca/faqs/l3_faq_coolstuff_bird.htm DrJoe November 6th, 2004, 04:26 AM we'll see if the cheap bastards turn them back on during the winter...not likely. Ashok November 6th, 2004, 05:27 AM i wonder what will happen to the CN tower, if it ever will be the second highest structure in Toronto? |
