musiccity September 3rd, 2011, 03:30 PM  JHB is in my top 5 favorite African cities. Keep up the good work the E.N.D!
The E.N.D September 3rd, 2011, 04:46 PM Thanks for the encouragement.
Maybe a mod can help me out with the formatting of the thread title?I can't do that "City Gallery" thing.
Then again,Cape Town's thread has been alright and yet it has a borderline annoying and OTT thread title!

Azmat September 3rd, 2011, 05:13 PM South Africa has such amazing infrastructure and unlike South American countries, the buildings look modern.
buhera September 3rd, 2011, 06:12 PM What are the effects of office parks and places like Sandton on the Joburg CBD.
ufookoro September 3rd, 2011, 07:31 PM JHB deserved its own photo gallery tbh. This is Sandton.
Absolutely fantastic photos. Sandton can compare with any district in the first world. I just wished the rest of the continent can wake up from their slumber.
Fat chance...
The E.N.D September 3rd, 2011, 09:48 PM What are the effects of office parks and places like Sandton on the Joburg CBD.
I've known you short enough to assume you're a smartie and already know the answer to your question.
The CBD is gradually mutating into this dodgy bastion for street hawkers and the homeless. The level of neglect from city officials is alarming as they've simply rested on their laurels as the inner city degenerated. It feels like they left the grimy neighbourhoods like Hillbrow to spread their tentacles into the other parts of the CBD.
Of course there are some districts of the city like Braamfontein (where Wits is situated) that are trying to their best to ward off blight but methinks its a battle they've lost already. There's always those never say dies that believe that the CBD can be saved and its seen a lot boutique hotels, upmarket apartments flourish but I'm not convinced.
Most of the big businesses that were in the inner city post 2000 are still there.Think Nedbank is the only bank to emigrate to Sandton."Bank city" and much of the CBD's financial district remain intact.
I'm sorry that I don't give a positive picture but that's how I see it.I'm willing to bet that there are other Joburgers that are going to dismiss my rhetoric as rubbish.
This is my last year at Wits which therefore will bring to an end the necessity of going to the city. I wish I could say I am going to miss it.
DennisRodman817 September 3rd, 2011, 10:20 PM Lovely!
Citi bank is also in SA?
Simfan34 September 3rd, 2011, 10:45 PM It's really amazing the way the centre of action, so to speak, moved to Sandton, and how quickly it did. Hillbrow used to be upscale, no? Wow.
How far is Sandton from Downtown?

How far is Sandton from Downtown?
I actually don't know the kilometre count.
Takes a good 20min or so to commute between the two.
Will definitely take less than 10min when the CBD's Gautrain line opens.
I have to disagree with much of this.....
Free country for the most part.
Care to elaborate your argument then?
LADEN September 4th, 2011, 03:33 AM I like the older inner suburbs like Melville, Braamfotein, Newton, Parktown, Killarney, Greenside, Emmarentia, Obervatory and Burma. Even with a few improvements i would also chose Hillborw, Yeoville, Brea, Fordesburg and Doormfotein over Sandton. Johannesburg South seems like the place to retire, lots of rolling hills.
musiccity September 4th, 2011, 03:36 AM I agree! Sandton is really nice but its too flashy. Joburg has a variety of different neighborhoods for a variety of different tastes. If I were to move to Joburg I would live in Emmarentia, its leafy, peaceful, and has a large, pretty park for jogging. :)
The E.N.D September 4th, 2011, 03:50 AM Of course the city has multiple neighbourhoods that are perfectly alright to work and live.My Sandton vs inner city argument was more from a commercial centre perspective, which environment is more conducive towards business.
I don't live in Sandton and quite frankly don't intend to since there's better alternatives IMO such as Rosebank,Auckland Park,Cresta and Melville.

Yep I think there are much better areas in Joburg than Sandton where it all looks the same. Emmarentia looks like it has a high Asian population from goolgle street lol. The Randburg suburbs like Parkhurst and Northcliff/quellerina are amazing. And Roodeport's suburbs are really nice from Florida hills up to Helderkruin and to Wiro Park. The nice suburbs keep going into Krugerdorp but i think it would be too far of a drive lol. Midrand is just sprawl of estates, they might be rich but they probably have no souls.
But if I lived in joburg it would be the areas just north of the CBD off of the M1 highway near the joburg zoo and zoo lake area: Parkwood, Greenside, Rosebank, Melrose etc.

I also look at Joburg and Gauteng though Street View lol, and Midrand and Lone Hill look like suburban Texas. A lot of big houses densely packed together.

The texas and midrand homes might be massive, but i like the house of older homes. Like you'd find in NY or old southern towns or the older suburbs of Joburg. Those big esates all look the same and they have such small yards with no trees.

briker September 5th, 2011, 08:58 AM Joburg CBD is alive and kicking. If only people just dont give up on it and look after their city, it may truly become even better than ever before! Sandton is a "braindrainer". Urban sprawl in Joburg must be stopped.

Joburg has SO much more than its heavy reputation suggests - here is to getting the news out there and pushing Jozi into its rightful place as a multi-layered, gritty-cool, engine-room world city.

Look again - white, black, Muslim all in the same place, are you so blinded by your racism that you can't see the black people in the cafe, the model shots, the cool old black dude with his cool car?
Such nice photos, and all you can get from them is some imaginary insult to black people...what a shame for you!

Nostra January 20th, 2012, 02:46 PM An ode to Africa's greatest city. Many people hate this city or at least front like they do, but me, I love Jozi and I aint ashamed to admit it. I get depressed when I'm away from the city for anything longer than a few days. City makes me feel alive. The energy of the place, the bravado and can-do-attitude of the people, the beauty of the girls, the chic cafe's and malls. The over the top opulence of the rich areas, the hustle of the poor, waking up at 4 in the morning to get on overloaded trains and taxis so they can make a living. The fact that every African nation is represented on the streets and everybody is got one goal in mind: "hustle hard"
my joburg my city my heart..
my joburg they run from you
they call you lazy
they call you stupid
they call you names and
make you feel like an alien in your own skin
my joburg I’ve heard them whisper about you,
behind your back
they say you’re dirty
they poke fun at you..
lay their filthy hands on you
and kick you to the global curb
they spit
they laugh at you
they pretend to know you
and remember you only when they hurt
but my joburg you’re my secret weapon
my gem
my diamond in the rough
you’re my hidden treasure
my last pleasure
my seductive lover..
and I love you in the morning
when you fold over me and you kiss me and soothe me
I love you in the afternoon when your sun rises so high above me,
hovering over me
sharing secrets with me, unknowingly
I love you in the evening
and how your moon looks after me
in the cold, it cradles me
draws me nearer…pulls me in close
and lets me sleep under your stars..
without asking anything of me
my joburg
but you’re so brave
I’ve seen you hurt, I’ve seen you ache
I’ve seen you cry, I’ve watched your offspring die
and when Biko, and when Sobukwe, and when Duiker, and when Paton, and when Makeba, and when Fassie, and when Hani, and when Dube, and when Mathosa, and when Ngoyi, and when Tambo, and when Sisulu…
you looked at me and smiled
my joburg my city my heart
I pour my soul over you
I’d die for you
lay my life and heart on the line for you
because you shone your light for me
and kept me from the dark
because you saved me, again
and again
and again
because you stood up to them and showed them who you are
you revolted and rebelled
you ran, you sprinted, you crawled to the finish line
for me
for me
my joburg my city my heart
they look at your past
they say you’re too soft, you’re too hard
they say you’re lucky
they say I should count my lucky stars
they don’t know how you made it alive
after being fought over
bought over
separated and
took over
and still you shine
still you rise
still you watch my back and tell me of our glorious times
ahead of us
Oh joburg
my city my heart
I lay down before you
I sit still and am in awe of you
you’re beauty, you’re gold
you’re my secret weapon,
My gem
My hidden treasure,
My last pleasure
My divine, seductive lover
and some may hate you forever,
but you’re my sweetest one.
my joburg
my city
my heart
Here, take it…
you have
all
my love.
