Was talking to a mate of mine who works at Jetty Surf in Bourke St, and apparently a TV station has bought the street front shop and is to broadcast from the new street front studio. They will move in by the end of the year or early 2005. It will be much like the Sunrise/Seven News Sydney setup at Martin Place? I've no idea who the station is though. Nine perhaps? With the Today show?

The Today Show is based in Sydney. I can't see it moving south, but I am certain if it did, Tracy would be happy living back home in Melbourne. She loves Melbourne and misses it a great deal.

We need one of the morning shows broadcast from here. Hopefully it is channel nine and the today show :) Any official word on this? Maybe someone should make a call to channel nine :) *runs for phone*

Did they buy the Jetty Surf shop or another one in the Mall??

Can't wait, should be great if it's true.

Thanks guys,
Matt:)

So it will be a bit like rockerfeller centre in NYC where nbc hosts its 'today' show from, i like that idea. I'd say it will be 7 if its in Melbourne tho seeing as tho 9 is very sydney orientated and 7's base is in Melbourne at Telstra Dome if i am not mistaken.

I think it sounds like a good idea. How many people would be standing out the front waving to the cameras though? :)

I cannot see TODAY moving south, perhaps Network 10?

A new morning show or another revamp for GMA?

A location dearly lost was QV's street frontage, above the street. about 3 levels above.

I'm thinking up where Domayne is, or over on the Sensis/AFL side.

Gee we can't stop copying the yanks can we ;)Yeah, and 10 years too late at it too.

Whenever I pass the Martin Place shopfront, absolutely no-one is standing outside. If I see anyone on that crappy Sunrise show, It's usually just a couple of people from Wagga Wagga or Albury-Wadonga having a stickybeak. Mmmmm, very cosmopolitan. ;)

They may as well put a radio shock-jock booth in Bourke St Mall, just like they do @ Royal Shows. Then you can pull faces and stick fingers up @ them.

I'll have to make point of waving to the camera as I cycle by on the way to work.

Does it have to be a morning show?

Would be cool to see The Panel there I think.

Good point joed.

Once again isn't "The Panel" located in Sydney tho'?

Perhaps the Melbourne based "Rove"? lol.

I don't know why everyone is assuming is is a morning show, or even a national show. It could just be the new set of Melbourne's today tonight or some other news or current affairs show.

I don't think it will be TT. While the show is broadcast from Melbourne, and is advertised as 'melbourne's today tonight', it in fact goes to Sydney, Brisbane and Tasmania. I doubt people in Brisbane would appreciate a street side studio in Melbourne...7 do a good job of hiding where the show is produced from.

Here's hoping it's to be the new home for one of our nightly news services...possibly Channel 9 as 7 only a few years ago moved into their Docklands complex.

Thanks guys,
Matt:)

Well I've just found out that GTV9 (I'm assuming thats channel nine?) are moving to Bourke Street by the start of next year. I beleive Today and the news will be filmed there.

November 7th, 2004, 12:22 PM
well thats werid
the panel is done at the como centre studios, channel seven wont relocate to bourke st when they have a complex at docklands, ten wouldnt move either as their studios are only 10 years old and are in a prim location
news is that gtv9 are probably the ones buying it as their studios are as old as the hills
having today and national nine news there would be fabulous, but the news would have to have some sort of newsy feel
id say today are moving there

great, they can sell GTV9 and open it up for redevelopment while they're at it.

seven8888
November 7th, 2004, 12:35 PM
well they still need gtv9 for production like they did with channel seven in melb, have the news etc done at docklands whilst the production at dorcas st studios in southbank.

i drove past gtv9 the other day, and it is looking extremly delapidated, the old sign, its writing is peeling off and the buildings are soo old

I have a question. I live in the US (how unforunate for me I know) which city produces the most tv programs? Sydney or Melbourne? Also which city would be considered the hollywood of Australia...? Like where the hell do they film neighbors?

Hypernovean
November 24th, 2004, 06:08 PM
They film Neighbours in Melbourne, as well as a fair few other shows, but I think Sydney is well and truly Hollywood-Oz.

Thats kewl then. I really love Nova 100 (listen online all day at work) from melbourne you guys have some pretty good radio there as compared here to the US. I have satellite radio in my Jeep does Australia have that as well? also how many tv channels does Melbourne have? I am so curious about Victoria so sorry for the off topic questions. :)

There are 5 free-to-air channels in Australia, 3 of them are commercial. Some channels have variations for different regions, but all the capitals mostly have the same. Something like 80 pay-TV stations though. Not as many as the US I bet! Not sure about satellite radio, I assume so, someone correct me if I'm wrong? It's nice to know that our radio and TV is listened to/watched in the States, considering how much American TV we get here.

yea we get neighbors and some great oz movies (murials wedding is a fav here in Florida) We love us some Rachel Griffiths and Toni Colette and that awesome Kylie and Dannii ;) Here in Urban areas in the Us we get about 20 to 26 free (broadcast) channels in rural areas less... Like where I grew up in Kentucky we had one tv channel free to air and it was government run (PBS). Pay channels(Cable) usually 80 channels (digital cable) about 150 channels. Satellite TV we get about 800 channels of programming (depending on programming package of course). Satellite radio we get 160 stations (www.sirius.com) commercial free. On Satellite radio we get Radio Australia. Im not sure what their programming is... news?

scraperdude you gonna pay your $12 bucks for Howard Stern?

the closest thing we have to "pay radio" here in australia would probably be the audio only stations on digital cable. don't think you would classify them as "radio" of course.

Wow about an about-face by Nine. They were so unphased by "Sunrise" and "Seven News" when they moved to the Martin Place studios, but then I saw "Today" being filmed in Hyde Park last week, and and now this....

Nine is obviously playing catch up big time!!

Today is now being broadcast from one of the highrise Hotels in Sydney. I don't remember which one, but it might be the Inter-Continental.

Yes, I watched the program this morning from Intercontinental Hotel with Opera House as a backdrop. With some of the new hirise closer to Circular Quay, one can no longer see the Opera House from Sydney Tower. I actually think the Sydney Bridge and Opera House have been done to death as Sydney landmarks. It is nice to see Botanic Gardens or Hyde Park as an outdoor setting. Also its about time the lazy Carr govt got cracking and started to beautify Bondi Beach with a few Canary Palm trees. It does not even stack up when compared with Camp Bay,Capetown, St Kilda Beach, Melbourne, Santa Monica in Los Angeles, or Copacobana in Rio De Janeiro. :)

hi there scraper dude
are you australian or american ?
melbourne is certainly the better city when comparing sydney and melbourne,
melbourne has culture and has been the world's most liveable city for a few years running, melbourne produce alot of local shows whereas sydney produces more hollywood movies, and neighbours is done is the outer suburb of nunawading, ive been there before and to the street where they film the location shots, the studios were the old channel ten studios but when they moved to the como centre in trendy south yarra in 1993.

The Neighbours Ramsay Street (real name : Pinoak Court) scenes are shot in Vermont South.
Must add that Stingers is also shot in Melbourne, mainly in the suburb of Richmond. :)

seven8888 I'm American looking to maybe move to Melbourne to get away from the US and the BS here. For about a good two years now Ive been studying Victoria and Melbourne as compared to where I grew up in the US and some things are similar and some different of course but Melbourne is attractive to me as compared to the rest of Australia. I follow up with some of the media in Melb to get an idea of what kind of city it is and what goes on there. I pop in this forum time to time to see whats going on there as far as construction goes as well :)

Good to hear, I can say that if you move to Melbourne you will be very happy here, probably any city in Australia for that matter.

Talking of the Bourke St Mall, anyone know what's happening with it's supposed redevelopment? I've been away for a year and was wondering if the absurd idea to roof it over was still going ahead.

Also, can anyone (kindly) tell me how many floors the new GPO shopping complex has? Can't wait to see it when I head home next month. Not to mention Eureka. And QV1. And the new Melbourne Central. :)

They've recently started work on the Bourke St Mall, as of this week the tramlines have been torn up. The roof isn't happening, but i think over the new tram megastops their will be large shelters. Along the tramline their will be new 'blue' paving. As for the GPO, the new extension is the same height as the existing building so maybe 4 stories.

Where have you been while you were away?

sakor1
June 14th, 2005, 12:37 PM
Yep, also, they are taking out all the lightposts and putting lamps on wires above the Mall like at Federation square. Overall they are going to 'unclutter' the whole thing and make it much more roomy and pedestrian friendly.

there's been a tram track renewal programme happening for a couple of years now.

they probably havent been upgraded since the mall was first established and afaik tracks only have a life of 15-20 years.

I walked through there this morning and the tracks have been surfaced with bitumen... hopefully it's temporary just to allow deliveries into the mall before they do they whole revamp.

Also down at the elizabeth st end they have dropped the tracks about a foot so it seems that the superstop will be at ground level rather than being a ramp up.

Yeah, its temp.... or at least a base. It will be paved in stone sympathetic to the bluestone already in the Mall.
