Thiruvonathoni getting ready

Narayana Bhattathiri, the oldest member of the Mangattu Illam at Kumaranalloor, and his entourage on Tuesday embarked on a voyage that has preserved the belief of devotees for ages.

Mr. Bhattathiri will lead the customary journey of ‘Thiruvonathoni' that carries provision for the ‘Onasadya' (Onam feast) at the Sreeparthasarathy Temple on the banks of the Pampa river at Aranmula.

Legend has it that the deity at the temple made one of the elders of the Kattoor Madhom (in Pathanamthitta) to be his host for every Onam owing to his devoutness. Since then, it has been the privilege of the eldest of the Bhattathiris at the Mangattu Illam to host the ‘Onasadya' for the deity.

Although, generations later, the family had migrated to Kumaranalloor, the tradition continues uninterrupted to this day.

This is the 13th consecutive time that Mr. Bhattathiri has sailed to honour his divine responsibility. His specially-built ‘thoni' (country-boat) will traverse the sacred rivers of Meenachil, Manimala, and Pampa on its way to the Kattoor Mahavishnu Temple on the Uthradom day, the day that precedes Thiru Onam.

Provision for the Onasadya that are offered by devotees will then be taken on the ‘Thiruvonathoni' which will be escorted by a large number of ‘palliyodams' (snake-boats) in a procession on its way to the Sreeparthasarathy Temple at Aranmula.

As a prelude to the 112th GAIL Kottayam boat race, the Kottayam West Club is organising the 4th Kottayam mini-marathon on September 17. The event will be conducted in association with the District Sports Council.

According to George Kuruvilla, convener, the event would be conducted in the men's and women's categories, with the respective race lengths being 21 km and 11 km.

Cash prizes

In addition to the Kulangara K.J. Mathew Memorial and the Uzhavoor Kizhakkekuttu Chackochen Memorial ever-rolling trophies, the winners would also be awarded cash prizes.

Colourful ‘rasa' marks Manarcaud church fete

Tens of thousands of devotees participated in a ‘rasa' (religious procession) taken out as part of the ongoing eight-day lent being observed at St. Mary's Jacobite Syrian Cathedral in Manarcad, near here, as part of the birth anniversary of Saint Mary.

The colourful rally was marked by devotees carrying hundreds of parasols and several gold and silver crosses. The procession was led by priests Fr. Kuriakose Karukayil, Fr. Andrews Corepiscopa, and Fr. M.I. Thomas Mattathil. Traffic restrictions were imposed in the area on account of the procession.

Holy Eucharist

Catholicos of the Jacobite Syrian Christian Church Baselios Mar Thomas I will be the celebrant of the holy Eucharist that will be celebrated on Wednesday. Later in the day, the customary ‘nada thurakkal,' considered to the highpoint of the feast, will take place. The image of Saint Mary along with Jesus Christ will be kept on display for the public until September 14.

Onam kits distributed

The district administration on Wednesday distributed 3,000 Onam kits to select families in Kottayam municipal area and the panchayats of Panachicadu and Vijayapuram.

Revenue Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan inaugurated the distribution of the kits.

He also hoisted the ceremonial flag marking the beginning of the Onam celebrations in the district.

District panchayat president Radha V. Nair, Kottayam municipal chairman Sunny Kalloor, District Collector Mini Antony and representatives of various local bodies participated in the function.

Earlier on the day, a ‘pookkalam' competition was organised at the Jawahar Balabhavan.

A cultural meet as part of the celebrations will be held at the Thirunakkara ground on Thursday.

Artists to be felicitated

The event, which will be inaugurated by Mr. Radhakrishnan, will felicitate 14 eminent personalities from various fields.

A performance by the Southern Naval Command band is also organised.

With the conclusion of the Kavanattinkara Boat Race on Saturday, the days of regatta have set in, in the district.

The second boat race of this season, Sreenarayana Jayanthy Boat Race at Kottathode near Kumarakom, marks the visit of Sreenarayana Guru to Kumarakom, and has been held every year since. The 108th edition of the regatta will be held on Sunday.

The more renowned, Thazhathangadi Boat Race, now rechristened GAIL Boat Race at Thazhathangadi, is scheduled for September 18.

Among the oldest boat races in the State, it owes its establishment in the present form to T. Rama Rao, former Diwan of the erstwhile princely state of Travancore. It was Rao, while serving the then Kottayam Division as ‘Diwan Peshkar' (division head), arranged the different categories of boats as Chundan , Vaipu , Iruttukuthi and Churulan , in a scientific manner. Later, royal sponsorship enhanced the esteem of the boat race. At present, it is organised by Kottayam (West) Boat Club.

Several other events, including competitions in ‘vanchipattu' , a mini-marathon, and a cultural pageantry have been organised in the run-up to the competition

A new race will debut this year on September 25 under the aegis of Kollad Boat Club at Kodoor River. The winners will bag the K. R. Narayanan Memorial Ever Rolling Trophy. The registration for the race has begun.

The 112th edition of Kottayam Boat Race, the oldest regatta being held in a scientifically arranged manner in Kerala, will be held on Sunday, organisers have said. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will inaugurate the race at 2 p.m. at the pavilion at Thazhathangadi on the Meenachil river. This will be followed by pageantry.

Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, Minister for Revenue, will deliver the keynote address. Jose K. Mani, MP, will release the souvenir. District collector Mini Antony will hoist the flag and Sunny Kalloor, chairman, Kottayam Municipal Council will preside over the function.

According to organisers, 36 boats, including eight Chundan vallams , will participate in the current edition of the regatta. In addition, five each will participate in Vaipu (Grade I), Iruttukuthi and Churulan grades. Two women's teams will participate with their thekken odi vallams . The competition is being organised by the Kottayam (West) Boat Club, Kottayam Municipal council, district Tourism Promotion council and Thiruvarpu Grama Panchayat.

Club president K. T. Varghese Kottackal, general secretary Thomas V. Vattukalam, chief coordinator K. J. Jacob and Nazar Chathankottumali participated in the press conference.

The Rubber Board is organising a training programme in rubber cultivation at the Rubber Training Institute, near here, from October 10 to 14.

According to a press release here, the course content includes modern planting materials, planting techniques, manuring, pest and disease control, tapping and latex processing.

The medium of instruction is Malayalam and the course fee is Rs.1,250. Candidates belonging to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes category are eligible for a concession of 50 per cent in fee.

The payment may be made by money order or demand draft drawn in favour of the Director (Training), Rubber Board, payable at Kottayam.

The application on white paper along with the fee may be forwarded to the Director (Training), Rubber Training Institute, Rubber Board P.O., Kottayam – 686 009, Kerala.

The first ever boat race on the Kodoor river in the outskirts of the town will be held on Sunday. The race, organised by Kollad Boat Club will be for the K.R. Narayanan Trophy.

Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, Minister for Revenue, will flag off the competition at 2 p.m. from the temporarily constructed pavilion at Kalathilkadavu near Kollad.

According to Jimmy George, club president, the long stretch of the river from Puthuppally to Kodimatha has great potential for development. However, the area is now neglected by authorities.

On account of the present condition of the river, large ‘chundan' variety boats will not be in competition.

The competitions have been confined to iruttukuthi, vaipu, and churulan grade country boats, Mr George said.

The boat race is organised with the active participation of Kottayam Municipality, and Panchikkad, Vijayapuram and Puthuppally grama panchayats.

The K.R. Narayanan ever rolling trophy has been sponsored by the K.R. Narayanan Foundation.

The trophy was formally handed over to the organisers by foundation chairman Uzhavoor Vijayan at a specialf unction held at the K.R. Narayanan Memorial Government HSS at Kurichithanam. Foundation general secretary Abi Jose chaired the meeting.

Navaratri festivities begin at Panachikkad temple
The navarathri celebrations at Sree Saraswathi Temple at Panachikkad got under way here on Wednesday. The festivities connected with the celebration would continue till October 6. Thantri Perinjerimana Vasudevan Namboodiri would lead the Navarathri poojas.

The curtains went up on the ‘National music and dance festival' being organised as part of the celebrations. Kuchupudi by Vyjayanthi Kashi, Yakshagaanam presentation by Uduppi Yakshagaana Kendra, Chitraveena recital by P. Ganesh, sangeetha sadass by Karnatika Brothers, Kathakali, and Thullal performances have been scheduled as part of the festival.

Pooja Vaipu ceremony will be held at 6 p.m. on Durgashtami day.

The ‘Grantham Ezhunnallippu' ceremony as part of ‘pooja vaipu' will start from Umamaheswari Temple, Kuzhimattom and Sreekrishnaswamy Temple, Chozhiakkadu. The Mahanavami day will begin with the Dakshina Mookaambika Sangeetholsavom. This will be accompanied by Mahanavami Darshan and Valia Kaanicka. Pooja Edutppu and Vidyarambhom will be held on October 6.

The high point of the celebrations is the presentation of the Dakshina Mookaambika Puraskaram to musician Vaikom Vasudevan Namboodiri on October 1. The Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will present the award.

A two-day national seminar on ‘Climate change — new challenges in human rights' being organised by NSS Hindu College, Changanassery, will be inaugurated by N. R. Madhava Menon, former Vice-Chancellor of National Law University, at the college hall on Thursday, organisers said.

More than 200 delegates will participate in the seminar.

J. Prabhash, G. Gopakumar, Rose Mary George, K. S. Pavithran, Gokul Das, K. M. Roy, are among those who will address the seminar.

Food security

More than 30 presentations on subjects including politics of global warming, impact of climate on sustainable development, environmental governance and public policy initiatives, religious and ethical issues of ecological responsibilities, climate change and gender issues, food security, water pollution and health have been scheduled during the two-day event.

Varsity to receive grant of Rs. 9 crore in three instalments

The high-level research work that is being conducted in the various branches of sciences at the Mahatma Gandhi University has come in for national recognition.

The varsity has been selected by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, as one among 30 universities in the country for a support sum of Rs. 9 crore towards infrastructure development under the DST-PURSE programme. Notably, it has been ranked eighth (amongst the 30 selected universities) based on its h-index of 35 maintained during the period of 1998-2008. It is the highest rank that has been secured by a university or department in the State.

The h-index is a parameter used to assess the quality of research and also the performance of researchers and institutions based on the number of times their published research papers have been cited by other researchers. In a way, the measure highlights the impact and productivity of a group of researchers at a department or university.

The Promotion of University Research and Scientific Excellence (PURSE) is an initiative undertaken by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, to initiate value-added protective measures through introduction of R&D Incentive Grants.

The Mahatma Gandhi University, which has been classified under Category C by the DST for the programme, will be receiving the grant in three instalments of Rs. 3 crore per year for a period of three years for upgrading its R&D facilities.

This grant is to be utilised by the School of Chemical Sciences, the School of Biosciences, the School of Environmental Sciences, and the School of Pure and Applied Physics, along with the interdisciplinary centres that include the Centre for Nanosciences and Nanotechnology and the Institute for Intensive Research in Basic Sciences (IIRBS).

A Project Implementation Group (PIG) that consists of academics from all the science disciplines has already been constituted by the university as per DST guidelines to implement the programme.

The Ashtamai celebrations at the Sri Mahadevar Temple, Vaikom, got under way on Tuesday with the Kodiyettu ceremony.

Kodiyettu was held between the auspicious ‘muhoortham' between 6:15 a.m. and 6:50 a.m. The poojas were led by Mekkad Narayanan Namboodiri and Mattappally Narayanan Namboodiri. The kodiyettu was held to the accompaniment of panchavadya performance by the artists from Kshetra Kalapeedom.

KOTTAYAM: A group of people on Sunday launched a 'Save the Meenachil River' project in Thazhathangady.

The month-long campaign has been organized by Kanivu, a charitable society based in Illikkal.

The river, which is the main source of drinking water for Kottayam, has been facing serious issues like increase in the salinity and fall in water level owing to poor rainfall.

Adding to this was the pollution of the river by dumping garbage, mainly by those who were residing on the banks of the river.

"Our main aim will be to make people staying on the banks of the river aware about keeping the river clean," said Haroon Rasheed, convener of the campaign.

Already 40 members are associated with the campaign and many have extended support for the campaign.

The project area of the campaign will be the part of Meenachil River from Thazhathangady to Kanjiram where the river joins the backwaters.

"Our members will be cleaning the river of the plastic bottles and other garbage by going in boats," said Rasheed.

The members will also visit every residence located on the banks of the river distributing leaflets and making them aware about keeping the river clean," said Rasheed who himself is residing on the river bank.

The members will also help the houses in acquiring the biogas plants provided at subsidized rates by the panchayat. "We will get forms and fill them on behalf of the residents and submit it at panchayat for obtaining biogas plants," he said.

On Sunday, municipal chairman Santhosh Kumar inaugurated the campaign near Illikkal Bridge. Kottayam Nature Society president Dr B Sreekumar took an oath for protecting the river.

Following this a cycle rally was held from Illikkal Bridge to Kanjiram Jetty to spread the message.

A painting competition for students on the topic will be held on the banks of the river in Thazhathangady as part of the campaign next week.

"Seminars, photography exhibition and film shows at various placesthe banks of the river will be held in the coming days to spread the message," he said.

New picnic spot along Meenachil

KOTTAYAM: Want to escape the noise and crowds for a while? Hardly two kilometers from Kanjikuzhy is a picnic spot developed by residents of ward 2 in Vijayapuram Panchayat.

With benches facing the serene waters and ample space for children to play about, 'Snehatheeram' at Palakkattil Kadavu in Nattassery will open for the public on Sunday.

The leisure area has been developed in an area of nearly 50 cents on the banks of Meenachil river.

The area has been developed under the NREGA scheme. The river bank has been fenced and a lawn developed.

"Local residents chipped in to set up concrete benches and recreational facilities including swings for children. The estimated cost of the work is around Rs 1.5 lakh," said V S Appukuttan, ward member.

Boating is also possible here since the river is weed-free in this region. "There is also a plan to operate small houseboats here during weekends," he said. We hope to get help from the District Tourism Promotion Council.

Residents are also considering expansion of the project. "We are keen to develop another 600 metres near the river bank. A shuttle badminton court is also under consideration," said Appukuttan.

Though the river here is clear, it is unsafe to conduct swimming classes due to deep pits in the river caused by illegal sand mining.

"Assistance from the government will go a long way in improving safety measures here," he added.
