Azerbaijan’s territory is rich with examples proving it to be the home to ancient inhabitants. Absheron Peninsula has special importance in terms of historical monuments. Absheron Peninsula, the ancient settlement, has the history dating before century. Barrows, fire traces and tombs found here during archaeological excavations prove this fact once again. One of the oldest settlements in Absheron is Qala village that is located in the northeast of the Peninsula. There are 215 architectural and archaeological monuments in Qala village and the surrounding regions. The environment which is dated back to 3rd millennium BC is preserved here. There are several architectural monuments – 5 mosques, 3 bathhouses, 4 water houses (ovdan), houses, agricultural buildings, sepulchers, tombs, barrows, remnants of castle, etc. – of historical importance in Qala which belong to the period between 3rd millennium BC and 20th century. Qala village with its history of five thousands years old had several districts. Of those, Tarakama, Balaverdi, Haji Ramazan, Chambarakand are preserved till today.

In 2008, the first “Outdoor Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum Complex” was created in the territory of Qala Historical and Ethnographic Reserve. Archaeological, architectural monuments found in the territory of Absheron were gathered and restored in the Museum Complex. Barrows, houses and other architectural monuments belonging to 3rd-2nd millennium BC, are set as their originals in this area. A wonderful environment was created to observe the pearls of Azerbaijani history in this museum complex which has a territory of 1.2 hectares.

A unique museum opened in Azerbaijan exhibiting a 3700–year old samovar

Yesterday President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan and his spouse Mehriban Aliyeva got acquainted with a number of sites in Baku dormitory suburb Gala.

In particular they familiarized themselves with general state of capital repairs and reconstruction of secondary school №92 in Gala settlement. The two-storey school building was commissioned in 1969. 436 pupils study in the first shift in this designed school for 480 pupils. 80 pupils from Malibey village of Lachin region get education in the second shift. During the repairs the school building was fully reconstructed at the modern level, 6 additional classrooms were built on the second floor, the classrooms were equipped with new desks, doors and windows changed, floors capitally reconstructed and the roof was fully restored. Modern heating system has been installed in the school. Head of the state granted a bus to the school to provide comfortable travel.

President Ilham Aliyev and his spouse Mehriban Aliyeva got acquainted with construction of Gala Archeology and Ethnographic Museum Complex and took part in opening of Antiques Museum. Creation of Archeology and Ethnographic Museum Complex at the territory of State Historic Ethnographic Reserve in Gala settlement (one of the most ancient sites of man on Absheron) in 2008 under Heydar Aliyev Foundation’s support serves preservation of historic part and turning the country into a tourism centre.

Through Gala Information centre tourists and guests can get detailed information about museums at the natural reserve territory , hire electric buses and bicycles. The reserve outskirts have been well built , 170.000 trees and ornamental shrubs have been planted here.

The lake here and the 24.2 hectare territory around it were cleaned up from wastes and well built. The soil at the territory was dug in 3 meter depth, cleaned up from fuel oil, substituted with new land cover, as a result considerable changes in ecological state of the territory have been achieved. Solar batteries are widely used in territory lighting. Greening work has been carried out in the park, over 80.000 trees and ornamental bushes planted and greening strip equipped with irrigation system. A playground has been constructed at the park territory for children’s valuable rest.

Then head of the State and President of Heydar Aliyev Foundation got acquainted with Gum bath-house relating to XII-XIV centuries. It was said that unique gas and water pipelines and sewerage system were used in this bath-house in ancient times.

I.Aliyev and M. Aliyeva also familiarized themselves with Gala memorial complex at the reserve territory relating to X-XIV centuries. In 2010-11 Archeology Expedition " Absheron" of Archeology and Ethnography Institute of National Science Academy of Azerbaijan conducted excavations here under Heydar Aliyev Foundation’s initiative. The excavations revealed different discoveries of III-II millennium B.C and XIV-XV centuries A. D. Ancient sites of man on rocks and in caves, rock paintings, ancient basements ,ruins of ancient walls of bronze age, two underpasses towards the Caspian Sea and Baku city of X-XIV and X-XV centuries, tendir of XVIII century are displayed in Gala memorial complex. Mainly people and animal figures and different fragments are painted on the rocks here.

Gala castle , part of the Complex , relating to X-XIV centuries consists of a tower and fortification. The height of the tower of X-XIV centuries used for observation and defense is 13.8 metres. The fortification of XVI-XVII centuries displays gold coins, remains of gold bracelets and ceramics samples. Also rock paintings relating to III-II millennium B.C. discovered in ancient site of man in Zira settlement are displayed here. Men, women, animal figures and other fragments are painted in these pictures.

Head of the State was informed that Antique Museum was created on the reserve territory under the initiative of Heydar Aliyev Foundation. President Ilham Aliyev and his spouse cut the red ribbon in honor of the museum opening.

The museum fundament was laid this June with participation of Heydar Aliyev Foundation President lady Mahriban Aliyeva. The museum built under the Foundation’s initiative and support has been created on the basis of Shahid Habibullayev’s private collection. The rich collection prepared for many years presently numbers about 3.000 samples of material culture. The antique objects forming the basis of collection , produced by Azerbaijani craftsmen were repeatedly displayed at different exhibitions, including Paris, London, Washington, Berlin, Moscow, Cairo, Rabat, Bishkek, Tashkent and other cities and always enjoyed great interest. 800 exponents of this unique collection are displayed in this museum.

Azerbaijani samovars are also displayed here. The oldest Azerbaijani samovar aging 3700 years has been discovered in Sheki. It is more ancient than ancient Egyptian samovar aging 2.000 years. Certain space at the exhibition was devoted to male and female belts, women jewelry and bracelets, weapons including daggers and axes.

Входя на территорию музея, чувствуешь себя попавшим в старину. Имеющие историческое значение архитектурные памятники подтверждают, что эти места были древними поселениями людей.

"Байрамали хамам" был известен в старину как "Бей хамам". Относящийся к XII-XIV векам этот хамам в 1881 году также был реконструирован личностью по имени Байрамали. "Гум хамам" ("Песочные бани"), расположенному на высоком холме, долгое внимание не уделялось должного внимания. Относящийся к XII-XIV векам "Гум хамам" был обнаружен во время археологических раскопок. "Гум хамам" ("Песочные бани") был так назван из-за того, что находился под землей. Особый интерес вызывает "Шор хамам" ("Соляные бани").
