Spectacular start prompts ticket sales surge

AUCKLAND, 10 Sept. - Tournament organisers today announced that the giant Webb Ellis Cup which featured in last night’s Opening Ceremony for the seventh Rugby World Cup would be gifted to Christchurch.

The Cup featured in the closing stages of the ceremony and formed the backdrop to the official speeches by the Prime Minister the Rt Hon John Key and International Rugby Board Chairman Bernard Lapasset.

“We are pleased to be able to announce that the giant steel Cup will find a home in the city which was to play such a pivotal role in the Tournament before the tragic earthquake of February 22,” said Therese Walsh, Chief Operating Officer for Rugby New Zealand 2011 (RNZ 2011).More: http://www.rugbyworldcup.com/destinationnewzealand/news/newsid=2049537.html#spectacular+start+prompts+ticket+sales+surge

US players commemorate 9/11 at Rugby World Cup
NEW PLYMOUTH, New Zealand (AP) — Eight hours before their opening Rugby World Cup match against Ireland on Sunday, the U.S. Eagles attended a memorial service to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks.

Eddie O'Sullivan's 30-man squad and support staff filed into New Plymouth's St. Andrew's Presbyterian church as a group shortly before the service began, joining local residents, American rugby fans, local politicians and the U.S. Marine Corps Pacific band.

David Huebner, the U.S. Ambassador to New Zealand, sat alongside the players near the front of the church on the west coast of New Zealand's North Island. More: http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5gXyYvIY5RxUv-BY_cloDCyGGJytQ?docId=f62afe0523e743168545f5c181b9e7d0

Late Phil Mackenzie try helps Canada overcome Tonga in Rugby World Cup
http://static.guim.co.uk/sys-images/Sport/Pix/columnists/2011/9/14/1315987289758/Canadas-Phil-Mackenzie-sc-007.jpg

A late try from wing Phil Mackenzie saw Canada open their Pool A campaign with a win in a see-saw tussle against Tonga in Whangarei.

The Canucks had taken a 10-0 lead thanks to a try from lock Jebb Sinclair and a conversion and penalty from James Pritchard, but Tonga hit back with two tries from centre Siale Piutau and 10 points from the boot of Kurt Morath to lead 20-13.

Canada, however, kept their composure and scores from No8 Aaron Carpenter and Esher wing Mackenzie sealed the win, ensuring they remain unbeaten against Tonga in three World Cup finals meetings and effectively eliminating the South Sea Islanders from the tournament.More: http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2011/sep/14/canada-beat-tonga-world-cup

Philippines Fight Hard to Defeat Two Top Asian Nations in Day 1 of Asian 7s Championships
The Philippine Volcanoes came out of the first day of the second leg of the Asian 7s Series in Borneo with two wins and one loss.

Game 1 - Japan

The day started with the Volcanoes taking on the number one Asian Rugby Nation, Japan. The Volcanoes began the game with strongman Chris Hitch breaking through the Japanese defense and running 70 meters to start the day for the Volcanoes on a positive note. Japan then capitalized on some simple errors by the Philippines in their own half and quickly scored three consecutive tries. Vice Captain, Oliver Saunders then replied with a strong try to keep the Philippines alive at halftime, with Japan leading 17 - 12. Japan showed why they are ranked number one in Asia in the second half as they scored three more tries while the Philippines though Harry Morris managed only one try. The Volcanoes did not play to their potential and all agreed a better effort would be needed in the upcoming games to ensure a top four placing at the championships. Justin Coveney "The Flying Jeepney" was awarded the Volcanoes MVP for the first game. PHL Volcanoes brush past rugby favorites, win silver at Asian 7s Series
While a lot of Filipinos tuned in to Gilas’ performance in FIBA Asia, another Philippine team was beating the odds and making history in Borneo.

The Philippine Volcanoes, despite being one of the lower ranked teams, clinched the silver medal in the 2011 Asian Men’s Rugby 7s Championships held in Kota Kinabalu on September 24 to 25.

Ranked seventh in Asia, the Philippines beat Kazakhstan, United Arab Emirates, Malaysia and China en route to competing in their first ever Cup finals.

With the win, the team booked one of the few spots to the Hong Kong 7s to be held in March 2012.

The team needed to be in the top six to enter the Hong Kong 7s, the biggest of the nine events of the International Rugby Board. Unlike the other IRB Sevens tournaments that invite 16 nations, the Hong Kong 7s have 24 of the best rugby teams in the world, with the winner emerging after three days of competition. PH Volcanoes are getting media attention now. When they arrived in the airport, they were greeted by hordes of media men unlike few years ago, very few people knew about the Philippines' National Rugby Team. Great for PH to get the Silver.

Will PH ranking improve after this tournament? From 7th in Asia.

I just hope that their game in Borneo will be shown on TV.

England, France, Ireland, Wales, Argentina, New Zealand, South Africa or Australia?

So, who's in the best shape to win the World Cup?
It's crunch time for eight teams hoping to win the Rugby World Cup and with just days to go until the quarter-finals some teams are shaping up better than others.

Azkals redux? Philippine Volcanoes rugby team's identity questioned
The Fiji Rugby Union drew the ire of Filipino netizens after posting a comment on its official Facebook and Twitter pages against the Philippine Volcanoes

"The only thing Philippines about the Philippine team playing in the Hong Kong 7s is the name of the team," it said.

The comment was made on the second day of the 2012 Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens at the Hong Kong Stadium at Causeway Bay, Hong Kong, around the time the Philippines was playing a game against Zimbabwe.

Filipinos were quick to defend the Volcanoes on the social networking sites, clarifying that the members of the Philippine Rugby team are Filipino because their mothers are Filipinas.

Facebook users from the Philippines flooded the Fiji Rugby Union's site with messages, condemning what they viewed as "racist" comments against the Volcanoes.

At 11 p.m. Manila time, the Fijian Rugby Union posted a message on their Facebook page apologizing for their earlier comment:

"To all our friends from the Philippines an unreserved apology...there was never an intention to be racist or direspectful. it was a tongue in cheek comment that shouldn't have been made. Our humble apologies."source (http://www.gmanetwork.com/news/story/252650/sports/othersports/azkals-redux-philippine-volcanoes-rugby-team-s-identity-questioned)

Teams ready for RWC Qualifiers in Manila
To cries of “Sige na!” the Philippines will take the field at Rizal Memorial Stadium on Sunday night ready to take this fledgling Rugby nation to the next level. Nothing less than victory against Singapore will satisfy the home support or this ambitious and talented team.

Having only become an IRB Member in late 2008, the Philippines’ rise through the ranks in Asia has been nothing short of astonishing. Winning promotion through the divisions of the HSBC Asian Five Nations (A5N) became routine and, indeed, statistically the Volcanoes are the most successful team in the history of the competition apart from perennial champions Japan.

Sri Lanka and Philippines set up Top 5 2013 showdown (http://www.asian5nations.com/node/546)

Sri Lanka and the Philippines set up a showdown for promotion to the HSBC Asian 5 Nations (HSBC A5N) Top 5 competition in 2013 after winning their Round II matches at the HSBC A5N Division I yesterday at Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila.

Tournament top seeds Sri Lanka and the Philippines (third seeds) will battle for promotion to next season’s Top 5 on Saturday (Apr 21 at 17.00) while Singapore and Chinese Taipei will fight to avoid relegation to Division II on Saturday (19.00).

Victory was a family affair for the Philippines Volcanoes as they started three sets of brothers in yesterday’s win. Winger Luke Matthews scored on both of his first two touches of the ball to help pull the Philippines away from a spirited challenge from fourth seeds Chinese Taipei this afternoon.

Matthews’ brace of tries equalled that scored by his brother Joe, (who also started at wing today for the Philippines), in the team’s 37-20 victory over Singapore in Round 1 last Sunday (April 15). Matthews’ credited his forwards for some stirring defence early on that helped put the Philippines in the position to break through their last remaining barrier to reaching the promotion match, saying: “It felt amazing to score twice today but we have to hand it to our forwards whose defence was outstanding and set a great platform for the backline.”

The Philippines started three sets of brothers against Chinese Taipei: 15s captain Michael Letts and his brother and Philippines Sevens captain Jake, flyhalf and centre Oliver and Matthew Saunders, and the Matthews brothers. A third Matthews family member, younger brother Daniel, has already represented Philippines at Under 20 level.

When asked if there was a sibling try stakes going at home, a modest Luke Matthews replied, “I’m so proud of Joe. He played great on Sunday and had another great game tonight. It really is incredible to be able to run out on to the pitch alongside him and represent both our country and our family.”

Sri Lanka escaped a tense first half encounter with Singapore this afternoon to emerge victorious 35-10. The score at the half was 14-10 before Sri Lanka scored three tries in the second stanza while shutting out Singapore to close out the match convincingly.

Winger Sandun Herath scored his own brace of tries against Singapore, proving that the Sri Lankans also have plenty of pace out wide, setting the stage for what should be some great running rugby in the final.

Not to be outdone, the Sri Lankans feature their own unique family connection as the captain Yoshitha Rajapaksa and hooker Namal Rajapaksa are the sons of the country’s president, Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Both have been strong performers to date, with Namal returning from injury in match one to support the team through the grueling task of playing thrice in seven days.

The captain, Yoshitha, a standout for his Navy club and a veteran of Sri Lanka’s 2011 Top 5 campaign, has provided a steady hand at the tiller for this young and hungry group of players.

Former England hooker Phil Greening extended his unbeaten streak on his debut tournament as Sri Lankan coach with the team’s second win today. Greening commented on the win saying, “I’m proud of the guys, especially the way they fronted up today. We knew how Singapore would play and we put a plan in place to nullify that effort and the guys responded well. But we’ve won nothing so far and I will remind the team of that.

“The Philippines in my eyes are the top team so far”, added Greening. “They are the team to beat there is not doubt about that. There are quite a few players in the Philippines team playing professionally now in Japan or at high level in Australia while seven out of our 22 players earned new caps either today or last Sunday. We have five 19 year olds in the squad also, so I am very pleased with the way our players have taken to the international arena.”

Commenting on the result versus Chinese Taipei, Philippines Coach Expo Mejia said: “That was a tough match and it was just what we needed. They really stretched us and we will be better for it. They were desperate and they really picked it up and tested our defensive structures, which was great for us. “It will be a very tough match against Sri Lanka on Saturday but it is fitting that it will be the final. It comes down to who recovers best and who steps up most. Both teams are capable of winning and Sri Lanka isn’t quite surprising us. They have a good structure and are very solid in what they do. They have pace out wide and strong forwards. They have it all really, so we are going to have to peak on Saturday to win.

“But our guys are really keen to perform for our fans. We have been dying to have a home final and show Filipinos what we have got and we finally have that chance. The boys are up for it.”

The results from the opening matches on Sunday saw Sri Lanka and the Philippines both move up in the International Rugby Board world rankings. Sri Lanka’s 36-8 victory over Chinese Taipei took them three places up the table to 43rd, shunting Malta, Uganda and Ivory Coast down one spot. Their comprehensive win at Manila’s Rizal National Stadium puts them on 48.02 ranking points, and continued success in the Asian tournament would nudge them further up the ladder.

Perhaps the most noteworthy result of the weekend was when the Philippines capitalised on home advantage to surprise Singapore in the first match between the two countries.

Going into last Sunday’s match the Singaporeans were ranked world number 52 and the Philippines 20 places lower, but a 37-20 victory elevated the hosts 10 places in the rankings to number 62 in the world.

Today’s results leave the Volcanoes and Sri Lanka tied at the top of the standings with twelve points each as both picked up a second bonus point. Singapore and Chinese Taipei have yet to post points but that will be rectified in a tight competition next Saturday to see who retains their Division I spot.

Volcanoes roar, gain crack at promotion
Philippine Daily Inquirer

THE Volcanoes’ (in blue jerseys) solid play “set a platform for the backline against Chinese Taipei.” JOAN BONDOC

WITH little fanfare, the Philippine Volcanoes are slowly but surely getting the job done.

The Volcanoes moved within a victory of achieving what seemed like the unthinkable a few years ago—entering the premier division of the HSBC Asian 5 Nations Championships.

Drawing superb performances from three sets of brothers in their lineup, the Volcanoes ripped Chinese Taipei, 35-12, Wednesday night, setting the stage for a promotion showdown with top seed Sri Lanka at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

Duplicating the feat of his brother Joe in the victory against Singapore, winger Luke Matthews scored on both of his first touches of the ball to lead the Volcanoes to a second straight comprehensive victory in the four-nation Division 1 tournament.

Phl Volcanoes spew fire, rip Sri Lankans
By Abac Cordero (The Philippine Star) Updated April 22, 2012 12:00 AM MANILA, Philippines -

They bled for every point.

And when the dust settled, the Philippine Volcanoes were rewarded with a 28-18 victory over fancied Sri Lanka and a coveted slot in the 2013 HSBC Asian 5 Nations Championship.

No rugby team representing the Philippines has ever reached the Asian 5 Nations event, and last night’s victory at the Rizal Memorial Stadium made sure one would get there.

“This blood is for the country,” said 26-year-old center Justin Coveney, still bleeding from the nose, as the rest of the Volcanoes celebrated their hard-earned victory.:cheers::cheers:

Several Philippines players have signed professional contracts to play in Japan next season. For those that don't know corporations sponsor teams there and the players can earn quite a bit. 1m+ a season for the biggest names. Players with Asian passports are sought after because they allow you to field one extra foreigner (four total).

Matt and Oliver Saunders will play for NTT, Justin Coveney for Ricoh (called the Black Rams lol) and James Price for Kyuden where he joins Gareth Holgate.

excuse my tardiness, I'm not here often, well not anymore...but how serious is rugby in the Philippines? It doesn't have the grassroots depth as basketball does, nor does it have the international reputation as football does, it's stuck somewhere in the middle.

Filipinos of mixed ancestry seem to be doing well propping up the 'national squad'

Volcanoes Team Named for Rugby World Cup 7s Qualifiers.
http://www.prfu.com/1/post/2012/10/volcanoes-team-named-for-rugby-world-cup-7s-qualifiers.html#.UIT28pSv58o.facebook

The Philippine Volcanoes Rugby team will travel to Singapore to participate in the Rugby World Cup 7s Qualifiers on Nov 2-3. The team goes into the tournament on the back of some solid performances in the lead up tournaments, most notably, a win over the highly-ranked South Korean team in their final game of the recently-concluded Mumbai Sevens. The Volcanoes are ranked 6th going into the Singapore tournament and must finish in the top 3 if they are to progress to the World Cup in Moscow in 2013.

The Volcanoes have been boosted by the return of some of their players who are currently contracted to professional teams in the Japanese Top League. Oliver and Matt Saunders, Patrice Olivier and Gaz Holgate will all be present in Singapore along with the return of Ben Saunders who has just come off contract with a professional club in Sydney.

Included in the squad are Andrew Wolff and Tim Bweheni, 2 players who play in the local Filipino league, and are being rewarded for their outstanding performances this year.

New coach Al Caravelli is confident of a top 3 finish even if the results so far this year have been a little shy of the mark. His insistence on getting the process right is starting to pay off with the team improving at each outing.

Volcanoes 7s captain Harry Morris is happy with the mixture of experience and youth in the squad saying that this team is fully capable of qualifying for the World Cup if we play to our true potential.
Philippine Volcanoes Rugby World Cup 7s Qualifiers Squad:

Tim Bweheni (Alabang Eagles, Philippines)

The Bronze medals shone like gold for the Philippine Volcanoes.

The Philippine Men's National Rugby Union team have achieved yet another breakthrough after defeating Korea Republic 22-19 in the bronze medal match of the HSBC Asian Rugby Sevens Series Singapore Sevens on Saturday.

The victory at the Singapore Padang field sends the Philippines to the Rugby Sevens World Cup final stage in Russia in June of next year where they will vie with 23 of the world's best Rugby Sevens teams, like Fiji, New Zealand, and defending champs Wales.

Philippine Volcanoes earn berth for 2013 Rugby World Cup Sevens

Philippine Volcanoes
November 8, 2012
By: Dennis 'D Source' Guillermo

The Philippine Volcanoes confirmed their participation at the 2013 Rugby World Cup Sevens in Moscow, Russia.

This was after they finished 3rd at the Singapore leg for the Asian Seven Series just this past weekend. The Philippine team beat the 4th-ranked team South Korea, 22-19, last Saturday for the 3rd and last World Cup slot of the tournament.

Prior to this, the Philippine team finished 2nd at the group eliminations, before they upset power house China in the quarter finals. The Philippine team missed their opportunity for gold when they bowed out to Japan in the semi finals, which is why they faced South Korea to battle for the bronze medal. The first 2 slots of the World Cup were won by Hong Kong and Japan.

It's time for Filipinos to embrace rugby
MANILA, Philippines -- Rugby is a game only for bulked up crazy Brits and Aussies! The Philippines can never succeed in this sport and it will never be popular here in the Philippines.

Agree? Well, think again!

The International Rugby Board (IRB), the sport’s world governing body, had this to say about the Philippines: "With consecutive promotions in the HSBC Asian 5 Nations, and sporting an all-Filipino team, the Philippine Rugby Football Union (PRFU) offers tangible proof that nothing is impossible."Read more (http://www.rappler.com/sports/23017-nothing-is-impossible)

The Philippine squad has been hailed as the team to watch in Asian Rugby, having lost only once since 2008. However, they will be up against Japan -- the only team with a better record than the Volcanoes, having never lost a match since the tournament's inception. via Rappler

Media, fans boost Philippines ahead of Hong Kong clash
A buzz of excitement surrounding the first home game for the Philippines at the elite level in the HSBC Asian Five Nations has put Hong Kong on guard as they hope to secure their berth in the Top Five competition for next year's 2015 World Cup qualifying campaign.

Head coach Leigh Jones was caught unprepared by the strong showing from the Filipino media at yesterday's press conference with around 40 members of the Manila press corps turning up as they drum up support for the Volcanoes.Read more (http://www.scmp.com/sport/other-sport/article/1229486/high-media-and-fans-support-boosts-philippines-ahead-hong-kong)
