Yagya September 11th, 2011, 08:50 PM Coming up, a Facebook-like education website Jaipur: Fed up of your child logging into Facebook at the cost of studies? The Rajasthan government has hit upon a remedy - a social networking site that will also help brush up a youngster's academic knowledge. "The idea is to utilise the popularity of social networking sites among students. Most of them spend a lot of time on such websites every day," a senior official of the state's information technology department, which is developing the portal, told IANS. The government portal will give tips to students on subjects like physics, chemistry and mathematics. Experts will be roped in to answer the academic queries students post on it. "We thought why not make it a bit educational so that students can not only enjoy the fun that these sites offer but also get to learn something," the official said. Students will be able to open up their individual accounts, add friends, upload photographs, play games and interact among themselves just like they do on Facebook. "What makes it stand out is the fact that there will be subject-specific links on the home page. We will store e-books, objective questions and coaching material related to each subject," the officer added. The development of the portal is in the final phase, he said. The government should popularise the website by approaching educational institutes across the state, including schools, colleges and coaching centres, said Abhishek Sharma, a volunteer working with a local NGO. "The students should be encouraged by the institutes to use this portal," Sharma told IANS. "It will be fun to have such a social networking website. I usually get distracted by these sites, but fun and studies going together must be great. I am eagerly waiting for the site to be launched," said Manu Mishra, a Class 11 student. Parents have also welcomed the initiative. "My son spends half of his time on social networking websites which could be utilised for sports or studies. I will definitely encourage him to use the portal being launched by the government as it will at least have some study or course and subject material," said Ramkumar Joshi, parent of a Class 12 student. source (http://articles.economictimes.indiatimes.com/2011-08-07/news/29861416_1_social-networking-government-portal-educational-institutes) Yagya September 11th, 2011, 08:53 PM Raj govt plans to teach lecturers a lesson Jaipur: The higher education department has homework for college teachers. The state plans to turn 300-bed hospitals into private medical colleges. This will prevent migration of MBBS aspirants from Rajasthan to other places. "Every year, a large numbers of MBBS aspirants migrate to other states and foreign countries like Russia to study as they are denied admissions here due to limited seats. Now, the state government plans to increase private colleges to boost medical education," the minister of state for medical and health, Rajkumar Sharma, told TOI on Saturday. The craze for medical studies has increased over the past five years. In Kota coaching institutes there were around 7,500 aspirants preparing for pre-medical test (PMT) in 2005-06 but it increased to 16,000 in 2010-11. But, many students migrate to other states for medical studies. At present, there are six medical colleges of the state government in Jaipur, Ajmer, Udaipur, Kota, Bikaner and Jodhpur. Also, there are two private medical colleges – NIMS University and Mahatma Gandhi Medical College, both in Jaipur. As per the norms of the Medical Council of India, only a hospital of not less than 300 beds with necessary infrastructural facilities capable of being developed into teaching institution can be converted to a medical college. There are 300-bed private hospitals in Bhilwara, Banswara and Bharatpur, which could be developed into private teaching institutes. Chief minister Ashok Gehlot hopes that 14 private medical colleges could come up in the state soon. On World Population Day, Gehlot had said that some amendments are needed in guidelines of Medical Council of India to open a medical college. This is under consideration. Sharma said one MCI guideline state that a medical college shall be set up only on a plot of land earmarked for the purpose. There should be a suitable single plot of land measuring not less than 25 acres and is owned and possessed by the person or is possessed by the applicant by way of 99 years lease for the construction of the college. He said that most of the 300-bed hospitals do not have land, which could be developed into campus of the teaching institute or medical college. "This is the only hurdle. Efforts are being made to clear the hurdle and to seek permission from the MCI and Centre for the medical colleges. Such hospitals have land somewhere else where medical college can be developed," Sharma said. source (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/jaipur/Govt-plans-14-more-medical-colleges/articleshow/9253436.cms) Yagya September 11th, 2011, 09:07 PM RBSE seeks funds to link schools with Eduset AIPUR: Rajasthan Board of Secondary Education will see a complete make over in coming years. "Earlier, we were considering Delhi for as viable option. However, we felt that a lot of educational institutions already exist over there with lesser scope of infrastructure. We also realised that a large number of students from Rajasthan were going abroad to pursue higher studies. Therefore, we thought establishing our campus here will help students to get world class education by spending less and without leaving their country," said Mumtaz Kutty, dean (India), Claremont Graduate University (California). "We also noticed that the quality of education till undergraduate level in Rajasthan is good, however, there is no real academic leadership for postgraduate programmes as compared to southern states," she added. As of now, the Claremont Graduate University will start Masters of Science in Information Systems and Technology (MS-IST) from July 1, 2011. The duration of the course will be of 11 months. This year the university will run a temporary campus at Chennai, where the PhD holders from the United States will visit every month to deliver lectures. RTU has 150 engineering colleges affiliated to it with an intake capacity of over 50,000 students. Almost half of these students come from Hindi medium background and, thus, fall short on soft skills. "Spoken and written English coupled with professional demeanor are pre-requisites for a successful career. Our students are no doubt performing well but falling short on soft skills is hampering their bright prospects," said RP Yadav, vice chancellor, RTU. RTU has taken feedback from prominent recruiters on students graduating from RTU colleges. They suggested the university sensitize students on etiquettes, cultural sensibilities, accountability, team spirit, etc. values. Sometimes students fail to understand 'cultural sensibilities' while working in a globalised environment, they must be trained so that they can conduct themselves well in such situations. Ripudaman Magon, associate vice president, HCL Infosystems, a major recruiter of RTU students, calls it a 'path- breaking decision.' "Every year our company recruits hundreds of students, many of them lack professional ethics. This decision would make the students job ready," added Singh. To ensure that the compulsory training module on communication and professional ethics in the first year does not put too much burden on students, the university is reducing the number of subjects in the first and second semesters from 6 to 5 in the coming session. Another major decision to ease the pressure on students would be shifting of tougher courses from the first and second semesters to the next one. The university has identified subjects which the students find difficult to clear in the first semester and will shift them to the next semester. Computer fundamentals and computer programming have been moved to the next year as 10 out of 2 students flunked the exam this year. Similar model will be in place for all management colleges in the future. Last month, the agitated farmers demanding higher compensation, had blocked the construction of the power station after persuasion of MP Chandresh Kumari. Laxman Singh Choudhary, who had been leading the protest, said that all the farmers had been assured of a good deal during acquisition of the land for IIT in Karwad village. "On this assurance we accepted 80% payment at the then DLC rate on the advice of the government, but when the remaining 20% payment was made with the same rate, we felt cheated and returned the payment," said Choudhary adding that unless they were assured of the promised return, they would continue their agitation. There are 126 farmers, whose land has been acquired for the IIT and all of them are sitting on a relay hunger strike since February 22. "We were assured of some development by Monday but we have not yet received any reply from government side. So we again stalled the work of boundary wall and asked the contractor to go away," he said. On February 17, the villagers had blocked the work of the construction of the Ground Sub Station at the site, which was resumed on next day amid police security. The police had registered a case against the villagers in the matter. MP Chandresh Kumari had taken up the matter and had assured the villagers to wait until the written assurance of the government comes. A committee constituted under the chairmanship of divisional commissioner had also held a meeting on the issue and had written to the government for the opinion. "Negotiations with the villagers are in progress so as to arrive at a price, they want, to be sent to the government for final decision", said R K Jain, divisional commissioner. Choudhary said that they were not against the IIT but they also want a fair deal with the villagers, who have given their land for this premier institution. "We want 20% residential and 5% commercial land and job for one member of each affected family. But if this is not possible, price at the rate of Rs 20 lakh to 35 lakh per bigha, depending upon the distance form the highway, should be given in return", said Choudhary. Yagya April 23rd, 2012, 07:16 PM Five more universities to open from new session JAIPUR: Five new private universities are ready to open their sprawling campuses in the state from the new session as per the state legislative assembly that passed its ordinance recently. This will come as a boon for the students who will have ample choice to choose courses of their choice from several private and state players. Poornima University, JECRC University and VIT University in Jaipur along with Sangam University in Bhilwara and Career Point University in Kota will add to the tally of private universities. It will go up to 33 in the state including 17 universities in and around Jaipur. These universities are yet to go for gazette notification which may take a month's time. With the arrival of these universities, the state's claims of becoming an education hub will be strengthened. In the last five years alone, the state has seen over 25 universities. Of the total this year, four universities are by established educational brands and one by a Kota-based coaching institute. Creating entrepreneurs rather than job-seekers is Sangam University's philosophy. S N Modani, a trustee of Shri Badri Lal Soni Charitable Trust (who founded Sangam University) Bhilwara is keen on establishing a centre of excellence in textiles. "This is our basic industry which requires thousands of trained manpower. This centre will produce manpower required for different phases of textile industry-from processing raw material to national and international marketing," added Modani. For these private players a new university is not different from their existing engineering and management colleges, however, the only difference they can make is 'freedom' to innovate and experiment in the field of education on the basis of their experience and learning. Shashikant Singhi, director of Poornima Foundation is launching an MBA programme specializing in 'family business' for candidates who are second or third generation businessmen. "Here we have experimented with popular courses to make it more specific and value-based," added Singhi. The distinct feature of these new set-ups is the focus on infrastructure collaboration with foreign universities. Arpit Agarwal, director of JECRC Foundation with 10 years' of experience in engineering is planning to venture out in social sciences and commerce. He sees social sciences as big untapped sector. "I would like the JECRC University to be known for excellence in economics, mass communication and arts along with technical education," added Agarwal. In a first of its kind initiative, the department in association with ISRO has set up a SATCOM Studio in Jaipur, in which the faculty and teachers give coaching, which is then transmitted to the state districts and Panchayat Samitis. “This initiative was taken after an announcement made by the Chief Minister in the state budget. And the department has made all round efforts to ensure that the benefits of this programme percolate to the lowest levels,” says Minister for Science and Engineering, Raj Kumar Sharma. “The initiative has been undertaken keeping the economically weaker children in mind, who are not able to afford the expensive private tuition centres, though we have not restricted admission among the students. Anybody who thinks can benefit from the video conference tutorials is more than welcome to join the programme.” The model has been conceived with an aim to fulfill the coaching needs of the students that come from rural and far flung areas of the state, where private coaching and assistance is rare. For this the network has been linked to all the 32 districts and 237 Panchayat Samitis of the state. Through 12 ROT's (Receive Only Terminal) installed at the Panchayat Samitis and 44 SIT's (Satellite Interactive Terminal) installed at the Districts under the supervision of the Block Development Officers and the Education Nodal Officer. Students come to these centres and participate in live interactions with the faculty/teacher, and can also get their queries attended to, in real time. “Their queries are addressed and problematic topics are taken up by the faculty again if necessary,” says Dr Meghendra Sharma, research officer at the Remote Sensing Application Centre, SATCOM, Jaipur. “The hard copies along with readily available soft copies are also being provided to the students, where the matter is completely in Hindi. The response from the students too has been good. The well researched study material touches upon all topics. Almost 48 questions from the study material have come in the PET paper, which is testimony to the quality of the material,” adds Meghendra. In time to come, the department plans to include medical coaching which will include subjects like Zoology and Botany and these would be explained more vividly through animation and graphics. There is also a counseling session by the lecturers where the doubts of the students are addressed and solutions given after the classes are over. The students can also call and arrange a time with the concerned faculty for their sessions. With an average of 30-40 students in each district, the campaign has been well received among students from across the state. Rajasthan is the only state after Andhra Pradesh to have implemented such a programme. With the success of engineering coaching, the department now also plans to lend the technologically advanced medium of coaching to students taking the Medical entrance examinations as well. “The teachers and educationists are a panel of experts that have been recruited from various top colleges and Universities of Rajasthan. With the required experience in their respective disciplines and remuneration being provided by the Government, the faculty puts in their best in teaching the students,” says Dr Meghendra. source (http://educationtimes.com/educationTimes/CMSD/Editor's-Pick/69/2012053120120531120846628a5cb7e84/Techno-tutors.html) Yagya June 13th, 2012, 08:34 PM Rajastan emerging as a hub for higher education New Delhi, June 11 (ANI): The education system in Rajasthan has been changing very fast owing to initiatives taken by the Ashok Gehlot-led government. From the coming session (2013), the first semester will have five subjects as against six earlier in order to minimise the study load on new students. "It was also decided to shift the engineering mechanics subject from the first semester to the second as a large number of students flunk in this subject," said R P Yadav, vice-chancellor of RTU, who completed two years in the post on Tuesday. The council also introduced a new subject 'Petroleum and Space Engineering' and a course on communication skills. "Introduction of communication skills as a subject in the first year will increase placement opportunities for students not comfortable with English as a medium of speech," said Yadav, adding that often students were unable to convert job opportunities due to lack of soft skills despite their intelligence and good scores. On facing criticism over decreasing the passing marks from 33% to 30%, he said the council immediately reverted to the earlier pass percentage. "A fully online admission process to facilitate a completely paperless procedure is also on the cards," Yadav said. On the faculty crunch, Yadav said the recruitment process will begin very soon on the sanctioned posts. He also announced provision of benefits of Career Advancement Scheme to the faculty members. The government has asked every block to send information on 25% free admissions in private schools stating caste and religion of the child. The elementary education department is now collecting information from every private school for implementing 25% seats to students of deprived and poor families in their locality. Under RTE, it became mandatory for every private school to allocate 25% seats to deprived students. The school will give free education to these students. "This is first time we are seeking such information. We have instructed block education officers to send information," said Rajesh Tiwari, RTE cell head. The data sent from every district will collated at state level and then subsidy will be granted to those schools implementing the RTE. "Last year, when the data was sent to headquarters, a verification was done. It was found that most of them had given wrong information," said an official. The department is making RTE provisions very strict. "Minority and residential schools are exempted from 25% free admission but we are tightening noose on other private and public schools," he said. source (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/jaipur/Government-to-collect-data-on-25-seats-given-to-poor-kids-under-RTE/articleshow/14917305.cms) Yagya February 4th, 2013, 06:10 AM Central University to start community radio service for nearby villages JAIPUR: The Central University (CU) of Rajasthan is coming up with a 'community radio service' catering to 60 villages in its first phase with an aim to expand the knowledge base of rural people on wide array of subjects. The service will also provide them skill-based training for employment generation and to stop migration. The CU has prepared multi-layered shows on health, education, women issues, skill based trainings, animal husbandry, banking, child health, government policies, rainwater harvesting system and promoting local artisans. These shows have been created by experts and students on the basis of feedbacks given by village sarpanchs, gram panchayats and other villagers. The unique feature of the service is that most of the shows will be presented by the villagers themselves. "Twelve members from different villages have been given special training according to their expertise and knowledge," said Anuradha Mittal, officer in-charge, of the radio service. A 20-member committee has been constituted for executing these programmes which including eight members from the university and 12 from different villages. The service will cater to villages in a radius of 15 km from the CU (Bandersindri). Special focus is on women-related shows which aims at providing them solutions on their day to day problems besides sensitizing them on various job opportunities in the villages itself. "Our team has planned a series (shows) on successful woman from Rajasthan to inspire them," said Mittal, adding that during the preliminary survey in the targeted villages, they found that the condition of women is deplorable. The CU wanted to use this tool for creating awareness on various Central and state government schemes. "Shows on health of child and women intending to bring down the infant mortality rate (IMR) and maternal mortality rate (MMR) to zero for a healthy living is on the cards," Mittal added. Also, programmes on latest technological advancement on rain water harvesting systems, animal husbandry and special employment generation shows have been designed by an experienced faculty. The cost of the entire project will be met by the CU's social work department. Notably, villagers living around CU are engaged in agrarian economy and animal husbandry. The unemployment rate is very high and in majority of these villages, men have been migrating to nearby cites for work. M M Salunkhe, vice-chancellor of CU, said, "A university of this stature has a responsibility to play a pivotal role in the development of the region. The radio service is an attempt to make a positive difference in the lives of people who may not able to find an academic seat in the university." The community radio is now in the final stage. The university has applied for frequency, and once it is allocated, the station will begin functioning within in a month.
