I did yet another trip to Serbia, this time to the city of Niš - Ниш and to a tourist destination a little more south, Devil's Town - Đavolja Varoš.

Have they opened the interchange at Smederevo ? In the middle of July it was closed for repairs. And the detour was confusing to say the leaSt (NO SIGNS :().

Nope, not opened, there some signs, but not that good ones. We stopped somewhere and asked, and after that found it quickly.

We didn't enter Nis, i hope you've made a lot of pictures, but to be honest, the ones you posted so far don't look very promising.

Nis is not as beautiful as Belgrade or Novi Sad. But it does have some very nice attractions, you will see. These were just some pictures take from the car. I don't want to show only the nice places, I want to show the reality :).

The city is very vibrant with lots of young people in the streets at night. We watched the game Federer - Djokovic from a terrace, almost every terrace had a TV and it was showing the game. Nice atmosphere.

One thing I noticed there, I didn't here any English, German, Romanian or foreign language on the streets. There was more Cyrillic present.

I will try to return with pictures later. I still have some road pictures from the road to Devil's Town, then I will post pictures from Devil's Town, and after that, Nis, to make it chronological.

When i transited the area this summer, over 50 % of the cars on the motorway bypassing Nis where of nordic origin. I'm guessing they don't want to spend the night in a non-eu country. ;)

I see you were going to Prokuplje and back through Novo Selo neighborhood (the one after you pass METRO and a prison on your right, at the edge of the city).

That is in fact 2 km shorter route than going through main route to Prokuplje, which is in my opinion placed really weird, and not a single driver who isn't a local who already went there could find it. Funny, these engineers who had a project of Prokuplje - Nis connection, did it somewhat more south than logical, so in order to get to the road, you need to get on the motorway (Belgrade - Nis - Skopje) and then after 2km turn right to Prokuplje. This road merges with the one you were using after some 5km.

I'm just saying this non-useful info cos you probably noticed shanty conditions of that road passing through Novo Selo, Mramor and Aleksandrovo villages, letting you know that it's not officially part of Nis - Prokuplje - Prishtina road, but just local villages road. Thanks to non-logical connection of the main road with the city of Nis, rarely whom is using it properly, but going through this villages instead. Too bad, cos other part has much better asphalt and side-fences, etc.


Also, do you really think that going all the way to Devil's Town was worth it? The ride/trip certainly was, but I'm not too sure that Devil's Town is such big attraction at all :) What are your thoughts about it as a destination?

People usually complain about road conditions between Nis and Devil's Town. Despite sections being reconstructed recently, there are some horrible sections indeed (especially last 10km before Kurshumlija, and some kilometers before Prokuplje). How would you compare these sections and the road in total with Romanian roads? For example, if I go to Romania with my bike, could I expect generally similar regional roads or better/worse ones?

I marked red the way you went through, and light blue the existing E80 road. I think some urbanists probably hoped that in a future this E80 will surpass the city from the south through tunnels and over hills, as there's northern motorway pass already built. With this southern leg they would complete the ring of major motorways around the city. Probably they thought that putting E80 this much south away from citys main street to get into makes sense for this future idea. Just my thoughts anyway..

Also, I marked this Aleksandrovo village with blue/pink dot. Take a more detailed look on google maps whenever you get time, cos it's one of these rare settlements in central Serbia that was actually collonized by Banat settlers! So you can notice village streets being exactly like those in Banat, urbanized that way, with houses and households exactly the same!

I have no more details about it, but I know two famillies that come from this village and they are both Bulgarian origin but settled from Banat (Banat Bulgarians actually).

and actually, this is the only village in Nis area that appeared that way, all the others are condensed/nonurbanized kind of style, being built much earlier. There's one more Aleksandrovo-like village some 20km south to Leskovac, also settled and built by Banat people in the past, and these are the only two examples of this migrations that I know of.

Thanks for your comments and explanations vectom. Actually, I think my GPS wanted to take me like you said, on the motorway, but at a roundabout, we saw sign for Prokuplje, so we took that one, and went straight, and not left. The road was not that good, but my thinking is, as long as there are not many deep potholes, the road is very drivable. As you said, there was a section of road, that was not so good, I think it's the 10km you refereed. But still passable.

Now, about Devil's Town, I saw the pictures on the net, and thought it's a really unique place, and not far away from me, so it definitely deserves a visit. And since we also wanted to see Nis, it was the best opportunity. Even if it's not a big touristic attraction, I liked it very much and don't regret the extra 4 hours of driving to get there.

Just for the sake of adventure we would have also driven the Pristina road into Kosovo province, but we didn't even know if we were allowed to enter, since Romania doesn't recognize it's independence, and the car insurance I have, is valid only in Serbia's territory controlled by the Serb Government. Maybe you know more here.

About roads, I found Serbian roads in good condition. Romanian roads are also OK, but there are also some in very bad shape. I would say you would enjoy them on the bike, I have colleagues and friends who do that.

About the Banat infos, very interesting, I didn't know about that :)

Like the nature u can see farther... also surprise are the pix of Prokuplje. It's a small town with several nice buildings, but also nice medieval church, Roman baths and prehistoric archeological place. :cheers: and thanks for the pix mate!

yes, because it was more or less a huge hoax in media, and overall, very good branding job by local tourist organization. It is certainly nice place to visit, but is it too unique, too big or too 'wow'? I don't think so.

Also, I marked this Aleksandrovo village with blue/pink dot. Take a more detailed look on google maps whenever you get time, cos it's one of these rare settlements in central Serbia that was actually collonized by Banat settlers! So you can notice village streets being exactly like those in Banat, urbanized that way, with houses and households exactly the same!

I have no more details about it, but I know two famillies that come from this village and they are both Bulgarian origin but settled from Banat (Banat Bulgarians actually).


This is the first time I hear that some settlers in Aleksandrovo were Bulgarians. I don't know about others, but my great-great-grandparents were from Aleksandrovo and they were Serbs. Originally they were from a village near Segedin in Bačka (in today's Hungary) which is, apparently, part of the city of Segedin now.

Based on the stories I heard in my family (from my grandmother, who was born in Niš in 1900, and whose grandparents settled in Aleksandrovo), the settlers decided to move back to Serbia for patriotic reasons, as close as possible to Kosovo, from where, less than 200 years before, they moved "accross" Dunav (and temporary, mind you, the thinking was in their minds). I remember her stories about visiting relatives who stayed in the village in Austria, where she traveled by train with her parents from Niš, via Beograd and Novi Sad to Segedin before the First World War.

That might be romantic explanation for the move from Austro-Hungarian Empire, but they probably moved for economic reasons, because the Serbian kingdom gave them good incentives to do so. Each household was given 4 hectares of prime agricultural land plus more land for their houses. Also, all settlers didn’t have to pay state taxes for three years (but interestingly enough, they had to pay municipal taxes) and men were free from being drafted into the Serbian army for 5 years after they moved to Serbia.

In addition to Aleksandrovo, there were three more villagers settled by the Serbs from K&K monarchy (all in south Serbia): Nova Božurina, Kosančić and Milanovo.

Aleksandrovo was settled in 1881 and named after king Aleksandar Obrenović, who was instrumental in bringing them to Serbia.

Hamam is an old turkish bath. Today, it is used as a cafe/restaurant.
Hamam is the oldest preserved turkish building in Nis, it was built in 1498. The water was brought from the river Nisava with the help of the wooden tools with vessels that were catching water from the river and then it was brought to hamam with wooden pipes that were buried underground. Later it was filtered in the reservoir and partially cold, partially hot, it arrived to the baths.
This picture shows the inside of the hamam, that is now a lovely restaurant.

About mosques, I found this on wiki. I spotted this from the car when driving, but didn't make a picture.

Islam-aga's Mosque is the only working mosque in Niš, Serbia (there is one mosque in Niš Fortress that is converted into gallery and another close to the University Rectorate, that was damaged in Anglo-American bombing of Nis, 1944). It was built in 1720 and reconstructed in 1870. Of the twenty mosques in Niš during Ottoman rule, it's the only one that remains. It was torched during riots on March 17, 2004.

I did a Google search "Nis mosque" and this was the answer, I remembered passing it with the car. I know it's not the one you asked, but I thought this could help a little. I didn't know what the building you are referring is, I didn't try to enter it, I thought it's just a ruin.

I also want to advise tourists, that if the GPS takes them to a road were there is a sign "right turn not allowed", even if it's not a one way street, and if no car is coming, not to be lazy, and find the regular road, since if not, police officers tend to jump from the bushes and stop them. I know of an example like that somewhere in Kovin area on the way towards Bela Crkva :).

now it is a restaurant, but the building of Ottoman Turkish hammam is protected by the law as a cultural monument of exceptional importance, therefore not a single modification can't be done without consulting authoroties.

The mosque you're refering to (the one from the pic) is Bali Beg mosque, it was built between 1521-1523 and nowdays it's a lovely art gallery.

By the way, minarette (possibly bad spelling here) was demolished by Turks themselves.

On May 31, 1809 on Čegar Hill a few kilometers northeast of Niš, Serbian insurrectionists suffered their greatest defeat in the First Serbian Uprising against the Ottoman Empire (1804-1813). The insurrectionists' advance towards Niš was stopped here and, when the far stronger Turkish forces attacked, the battle was ended by the Serbian commander Stevan Sinđelić, who sacrificially fired at his gunpowder depot in order to avoid surrendering to the Turks, killing himself, the rest of his men, and the advancing Turks.

After the retreat of the Serbian rebel army, the Turkish commander of Niš, Hursid Pasha, ordered that the heads of the killed Serbs were to be mounted on a tower to serve as a warning to whoever opposed the Ottoman Empire. In all, 952 skulls were included, with the skull of Sinđelić placed at the top. The scalps from the skulls were stuffed with cotton and sent to Constantinople (modern Istanbul) as proof for Sultan Mahmud II.

The tower stood in the open air until the liberation of Niš in 1878. By that time, much of the tower had deteriorated from weather conditions or from the removal of skulls for burial by relatives of killed rebels. In 1892, with donations gathered from all over Serbia, a chapel designed by the Belgrade architect Dimitrije T. Leko was built to enclose what was left of the tower. Today, only 58 skulls remain, including that of Sinđelić.

In front of the chapel stands the monument to Sinđelić, and a small relief depicting the battle, both from 1937. The monument commemorating the battle in the form of a guard tower was built in 1927 on Čegar Hill by Julian Djupon. The lower part is made out of stone from the Niš fortress.

Skull Tower was declared Monument of Culture of Exceptional Importance in 1979, and it is protected by Republic of Serbia.
