View Full Version : How do you fight Mosquitoe and ants problems
mrfusion September 15th, 2011, 04:28 AM I don't think is that bad this year, but there are always mosquitoes, and the bites is not very pleasants.
Some people simply don't care, some got use to it, some have strange blood type and doesn't get bite at all, But some get allergic reactions, and for kids that keep on scratching, it can get other infections.
I am wondering how do others used to fight this problems, is there some particular plants/flowers you have in the home that repels mosquitos, and of course the plants should smell nice, easy to maintain and easy to acquire in Cambodia.
Another is how do you fight ants? Everyone say don't leave food scrap around, but this is impossible as there are always some food left over.
Insect spray is only short terms and smell very bad, very much kill both insects and human.
SeeMacau September 15th, 2011, 04:36 PM I often get mosquito bites since my arrival to Cambodia, and getting skin rashes probably because of the allergic reactions. It looks like mosquito bite, not itchy at all but it appears all over my chest and my back, disappear after 30 mins or one hour if I don't scratch it.
mrfusion September 21st, 2011, 02:37 AM maybe I asked in the wrong forum, no one here except us 澳門仔 has a problems with mosquitos.
Asian September 22nd, 2011, 01:05 AM I do too whenever I go to visit Cambodia. I used this creme-like Chinese tiger balm (a lots in Cambodia), see here http://www.swansonvitamins.com/PPC007/ItemDetail?SourceCode=INTL406
I put a small amount of it on the spots mosquitos bites and feel less itchy and it disappears the next day. It works. Of course, it does not solve the whole problem completely. For ants, I used hot water and killed them.

I used Tiger Balm as well, but this is something you used after get attack, I am trying to look for a way to keep the bedroom, living room, etc free of mosquito.
Ants seems to come out form no where, they are also tiny, difficult to trace where it comes from, and when I eventually find their track, it comes frombehind walls, I can spray insect spray into the wall, but it comes out somewhere else.
Hot water kills the visible one, but its team keep come back.
mrfusion September 22nd, 2011, 04:10 AM Chinese tiger balm (a lots in Cambodia).
lots of fake one, I purchased before, after a while, those on the bottom turns into a liquid. I buy mine from Singapore /HK airport whenever I go pass.
AsianDragons September 22nd, 2011, 04:19 AM have you tried mosquito repellent???
mrfusion September 22nd, 2011, 04:26 AM have you tried mosquito repellent???
yes, I used that sometime when I can feel there are insects around, but it smell bad, it also feel very sticky.
Insect spray is more commonly used for outdoor activities, like bush walking, etc.

I have this too, enjoy the satification when you here the spark, but I think most of the time it turn out to be dust.
I also have the electric lantern sitting on top of the cabinet, which use a blue lighttube to attract the mos, and electricute it. Very bright and disturb the sleep.

That's Tiger Balm which has passed expired date ...
I better get Tiger Balm right form the Jak Jia factory in Ban Pa In Industrial estate for the wholesale (red balm or white balm) but for the retail ... from any phamacy near me but preferably Booth phamacy.
For the case of mosquito repellent, get either Kor Yor 15 or that electric tracket (http://enbac10.vcmedia.vn/thumb_max/up_new/2011/04/21/item/317/316524/20110421214840_dv_10_01_2009_16_46_50_vot_muoi.jpg)
Alternatively, the incense coil for mosquito repellent would be helpful
alheaine September 22nd, 2011, 09:02 AM well, i've studied nursing :okay: in college (haven't taken my licensure exam yet), i suggest cleaning the surroundings as a primary step in eliminating mosquito reproduction..mosquitoes love cool, dark places..and they lay their eggs in stagnant water..making sure that your neighborhood is well informed and educated about how to first eliminate what mosquitoes love, is one small step but a giant leap in your community..second is how to prevent or stop mosquitoes from spreading disease like dengue or malaria..like wearing pants, long sleeved shirts or using mosquito nets when sleeping..or using insect repellents..well, there are plants that can help repel mosquitoes..citronella grass, catnip, rosemary, and marigolds..i'm not that particular with them..so maybe a little research can help..or help me up guys :)..i'm not a botanist..
we are living in a tropical environment (Cambodia and the Philippines) and it's obviously monsoon season, cleaning the drainage etc where water can be stored or stagnant is a necessity..when u store water in a container, it must be covered or sealed..and we must really clean our surroundings..scrap the junks..throw those things that are merely used or is broken..and coordinate with your neighbors or rural health officers/workers/representatives/etc about programs that can help in eliminating these pests(not just mosquitoes or ants)..
btw, with ants?if you don't have a fridge/refrigerator or a sealed container for some leftover foods, u can device a moat-like simple apparatus by using a plate, a glass/cup/mug/tin-can, and water.. fill the plate with water..then put the glass/cup/mug/tin-can in the center of the plate (with water)..and place the leftover foods in a container at the top of the glass/cup/mug/tin-can etc.. the plate and the water serves as a moat..like in european medieval castles with moat and draw-bridge..then the glass/cup/mug/tin-can is the wall of the castle (and the castle itself)..the king/queen is the leftover food.. well, the ants are the enemy/rival kingdom soldiers.. there is literally no way that the ants can swim on the water..so the leftover foods (if there are any) is safe from ant attacks..they can smell it..but they can't have it.. :okay: :applause: voila!!! a simple solution.. :okay:
i don't know if you understood what i've written..but in a simple way, i guess i helped you..even in a tiny bit of way..
btw, mosquitoes are attracted to sweaty bodies..:ohno:

It is avaliable here, but it is in Thai, no idea what is it for when I see it in the shop, in fact, I think all insect spray related products (and heaps of other cleaning product) in local shops comes from Thailand. Makes it quite hard to choose things from a shelf of product when you can't tell the difference.
mrfusion September 22nd, 2011, 10:55 AM Does anyone use some indoor plants etc to keep mosquitos away?
mrfusion September 22nd, 2011, 11:04 AM That's Tiger Balm which has passed expired date ...

Wisarut September 22nd, 2011, 03:41 PM ^^^
Lemongrass also mosquito repellent so now Ministry of Public Health has issued mosquito repellent made from Lemongrass extract during the Flood of 2011.

maybe a little research can help..it's just a google away.. or u can write a letter on your country's/city's health ministry office about inquiries regarding such topics.. :okay:
Choober September 22nd, 2011, 06:36 PM I live near a wet-land/lake so there are often huge swarms of mosquitoes around, I don't do much about them, other than use the zapper tennis-racket thing a bit and sometimes burn coils, but I don't think they are too healthy. Ants are a real pain, they seem to come from nowhere even in the most modern houses, it's important to make sure you don't leave any sugary things about, or like alheaine said above keep things either in a fridge or with a "moat" around them. I don't think using repellent all the time is practical.

While I totally agree with your advice, most people just won't listen to it and it's impossible to get them to stop leaving stagnant water around where mosquitoes breed. I've found that throwing salt into some of the water containers will kill off the larvae, but it isn't practical for large volumes of water.
You're right about sweat too, and I've noticed that mosquitoes are particularly attracted to dirty clothes, especially socks and shoes!

Dried peel of orange/pomelo/tangerine alogn wiht lemongrass woudl do a lot better job in tropical areas

everything just goes down to discipline and rigid education. :okay:

Unfortunately neither of those are too common..:ohno:
alheaine September 28th, 2011, 02:45 PM ^^
then start on yourself.. :okay: and influence others..be an example -- a good one..then impact other's lives.. :) it's hard..but it's not impossible if you take it one step at a time..
Choober September 28th, 2011, 03:22 PM I do what I can, but I can't see too many people taking notice. Where I live people throw their garbage straight out the window into the lake, and they don't see the problem with that.
alheaine September 28th, 2011, 03:29 PM ^^
oh my :ohno: they're so irresponsible.. that's sad..here in the Philippines we have DENR (Department of Environment and Natural Resources) which safeguards the safety and preservation of our natural resources such as rivers, lakes, seas, etc..what is their counterpart in your country?i guess you can report these kinds of incidence to them and to the authorities in your place..doing something as bad as that is punishable by law..but then again, not all is abiding by the law even here.. :ohno:

you can't change people that doesn't agree it is a problem,
is a lot like not wearing helmet, seatbelts, look at the way people drive, they know they are doing the wrong thing but they don't bloody care.

And then there are industrial waste, some of our water/drain smell worse then sewer.
alheaine September 28th, 2011, 04:09 PM well, it's a matter of national policy.. but then again it's about the people and how they behave..hmmmmm..

prehaps you can issues fines, but fines does not work well on people that could not afford to pay.
alheaine September 28th, 2011, 04:40 PM ^^
yeah.. maybe incentives in doing good would be better..like livelihood or free education to their children would do..or they can be park rangers where they live..if there are any protected areas around or near their locality.. :okay:

yes, it might work, but all these cost money, which the government don't have.
alheaine September 28th, 2011, 05:18 PM ^^
just once every year.. as not to have great burden to the government..or maybe a private entity like companies etc can sponsor that in line with some government policies right? :okay:
Choober September 28th, 2011, 05:49 PM i guess you can report these kinds of incidence to them and to the authorities in your place.
I'd have to report about 500 households, and I'd be laughed at..

well, that would be ignorance to the lowest level if they do that.. :bash: so uneducated reaction..i'm so pissed off with that kind of people.. btw, if they can't do that for themselves, then they should do it for their children and their children's children.. :okay:
