It's hard to rank fairly cities I haven't visited compared to those I've been too. Problem of Euro-skylines : Frankfurt has the height but not the density. Paris has the density but not the height.

My turn!

1. Chicago, USA (perfect layout, height, density; everything.)
2. New York City, USA (I recognize that NYC clearly beats Chicago as far as sheer amount and height of skyscrapers, but they don't really form a skyline to me; more like a huge blob.)
3. Sao Paulo, Brazil
4. Hong Kong, China (< the reason I like Sao Paulo skyline more than Hong Kong's is because SP is the largest, most impressive mass of highrises I know of on Earth. Hong Kong has an impressive and great skyline, but it is somewhat limited and you can see the mountains right through it)

(obvious top four; next ones are harder)

5. Tokyo, Japan
6. Seoul, S.Korea
7. Toronto, Canada
8. Minneapolis, USA
9. La Defense (Paris), France
10. Bangkok, Thailand

What do you think of that^?

(How can anbody honestly put Los Angeles** in their top ten? I mean by looking at the slyline, you woulndn't be able to tell that it is one of the largest cities in the world. I personally think the skylines of smaller cities like e.g. Cinnicinnatti, are far more impressive. and in my opinion the Los Angeles Skyline is one of the ugliest in the world; and as a whole the entire city sucks.)

I've only seen four "mentionable" skylines in person. If I were to rank them, it would be:

1. Hong Kong
2. Toronto
3. Vancouver
4. Montreal

Otherwise, my top ten list would be:

1. Hong Kong
2. Toronto
3. Chicago
4. Vancouver
5. New York
6. Melbourne
7. Calgary
8. Shenzhen
9. Minneapolis
10. Sydney

The reason why Toronto is in a higher spot than Chicago (and Vancouver over New York) is because I do not care much for old architecture (such as the Chrysler Building) as much as I do for glassy condominiums. For example, when I'm driven into Vancouver coming back from Stanley Park, the sheer number of glass condos lining the highway by Coal Harbour amazes me.

Another reason is just home-country bias. :)

I think a great skyline must have incredible heights (building-wise), incredible views (mountains and/or water), a great use of green space, and incredible style/architecture. That being said, my top 10 are:

#1) Hong Kong, China (viewed from the Peninsula Hotel at Kowloon, daytime)
#2) Vancouver, Canada (generally anywhere in the city is a great view, daytime)
#3) Shanghai, China (viewed from downtown accross the Bund, better at night)
#4) Miami, Florida (heading west on the Macarthur Causeway, esp. at sunset)
#5) New York City, New York (viewed toward Manhattan from the Staten Island Ferry, night or day)
#6) Istanbul, Turkey (looking across the Bosporus at downtown from the Hagia Sofia, daytime)
#7) Rio de Janeiro (from Corcovado Mountain, night or day)
#8) Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (looking SE on the Schuykill Expressway just north of Fairmont Park, daytime)
#9) Paris, France (looking WNW from the Arc de Triumph toward La Defense, day and night)
#10) San Francisco, California (viewed best facing East at Alamo Square, in the evening)

Nice work man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :cheers1:
I had to repost this great piece of work.

@ urbanspy , it goes faster like this :)

All my years in studying Urban Planning, helped me grow a greater appreciation for the dense downtown skyline of the big city. The downtown core of big cities across the Americas, Europe and Asia are the cultural pulse and economic engines of urban regions where millions of people live. All urban "life" begins and ends, each day and night under the watch of the city's tallest skyscrapers and most grand architectural structures. So let's kick back and appreciate the view that they have to offer us.

1. Hong Kong, China
Hong Kong has a whopping 39 buildings over 200 meters tall! Hong Kong also has 4 of the 15 tallest building in the world… all in one city! Hong Kong day skyline, shows a large selection of distinct sky reaching towers, with beautiful night lighting and reflection. The mountain backdrop to one side makes this skyline the greatest on the planet! Hong Kong defines the post-modern skyscraper and skyline.
Metro/Urban Population: 6.8 million

2. Chicago, USA
Chicago is the birthplace of the modern skyscraper! When Chicago built its first steel high-rise in 1885, it was not the tallest structure in the world but the first example of a new form of engineering that would change nearly every city on Earth. Chicago has 17 buildings over 200 meters and 3 building in the top 20 in height, and the Tallest in North America. Chicago has some of the finest mid-century arhitecture and examples of modern skyscrappers.
Metro/Urban Population: 8.5 million

3. Shanghai, China
This is not to be mistaken for a space station, this is a real city! China's biggest and most advanced city, Shanghai was said to be the most cosmopolitan city in the beginning of the 20th century, but lost its glory during the Mao era. It is now quickly regaining its position as one of the biggest economic powerhouses in the world as well as a showcase of modern architecture. With 18 buildings over 200 meters 4 of the tallest 50 buildings and the insanely tall 468m downtown Oriental Pearl TV Tower!
Metro/Urban Population: 13.1 million

4. New York City, USA
New York City has one of the densest and most diverse skyline, with a huge collection osf buildings and building styles. New York City has 44 buildings over 200 meters, the most in the world! Home of the famous, now destroyed World Trade Centers, the empire-state building, the statue of liberty and the United Nations, New York City is the finanicial capital of the western world. When New York City finishes the completion of the new "freedom tower" (the old site of the World Trade Centers), it may rank higher.
Metro/Urban Population: 21.0 million

5. Tokyo, Japan
Tokyo is the World's most populated city and has a number of unique characteristics from other big city skylines. Tokyo has 15 structures over 200 meters tall, including the Tokyo Tower. The density and vast size makes every corner of the city just another skyline. The height restriction and the "red lights" that all mid to tall-sized buildings require make the city look spectacular at night. Tokyo is filled with neon lighting and unique, contemporary architecture everywhere. The city has the world's largest fleet of helicopters to get around town if traffic gets too crazy.
Metro/Urban Population: 32.0 million

6. Singapore
One of the best planned and cleaniest big cities in the world, Singapore looks like a model city. The buildings can not be higher than 280 metres due to air traffic control restrictions, but that has added a tall (but not too tall) and consistent building height and space pattern that makes the skyline unique! 3 buildings are exactly 280 meters and there are 8 all together over 200 meters. The buildings are mostly light coloured, there is a lot of "greenery" in the city core and singapore just stands out in a league of its own in the South East.
Metro/Urban Population: 3.8 million

7. Toronto, Canada
Toronto a "meeting place", a crossroads of many cultures and ethnicities. Toronto is Downtown Canada, the biggest city in the country with the skyline to match! Toronto has 7 structures in its skyline standing over 200 meters tall and the insanely tall 553 meter tall, CN Tower, which is often refered to as the tallest free-standing structure in the world. While mostly untrue, because there are taller TV masts in the world, the CN Tower as the world's highest observation deck in the world makes this city's skyline one of the most immediately indentifiable anywhere.
Metro/Urban Population: 5.1 million

8. Kuala Lumpar, Malaysia
Probably the most impressive city with less than 2 million people in the world. Marvelous modern buildings reach the sky here, and while the skyline is not too dense, it does allow buildings to soar and stand out. Kuala Kumpar has 3 of the 25, including the tallest twin buildings, Pretonos Towers, argubaly the 2 and 3 tallest overall in the world. tallest buildings and also the 420 meter Menara Kuala Lumpur Tower
Metro/Urban Population: 1.5 million

9. Shenzhen, China
What was a tiny fishing village on the border of Hong Kong in 1970 is now a buzzing metropolis of over 4 million people! With 13 buildings over 200 meters tall, including the Shun Hing Square, the 8th tallest building in the world. Shenzen is a mavel of lights at night that makes you ask yourself if you are in a video game or in a real city.
Metro/Urban Population: 4.2 million

10. Seoul, South Korea
The city's skyscrapers are divided into many clusters, spread amongst the main business and residential districts. Most of the recent growth in Seoul's skyline, however, has been residential towers of 60 storeys and above are shooting up like blades of grass! There are 10 buildings in Seoul over 200 meters and much of the mid-rise to high-rise are lined up in a linear fashion, creating a "wall" of buildings. Seoul is where ancient East meets modern west!
Metro/Urban Population: 20.8 million

11. Sao Paolo, Brazil
What building did you say they lived in? Finding it in the arguably largest collection of condensed apartments you will see anywhere, would be a task. Sao Paolo has a population of over 18 million people! While the buildings are not super tall, with only 1 single structure standing over 200 meters, the skyline is stacked! Sao Paolo has a fleet of over 500 helicopters, second most in the world.
Metro/Urban Population: 18.3 million

12. Frankfurt, Germany
Certainly one of Europe's most interesting cities in terms of skylines, Frankfurt is home to 5 structures over 200 meters. The modern skyscrapers are marvels compared to those other or non-existent in most other European cities. The contrast here is interesting. One one hand you have the low-rise, high density traditional European city, with integrated towers sticking out, like soar thumbs, one could say, but impressive nonetheless.
Metro/Urban Population: 4.1 million

13. Sydney, Australia
Australia’s showcase city, Sydney has one of the world’s most recognizable skylines. Its famous harbour is commonly referred to as the most beautiful natural harbour in the world. A large harbour with many bays, inlets and secondary harbours, it is spanned by the monumental Harbour Bridge, and the Opera House decorates the shoreline like a white flower. The Sydney skyline is "world-class" with hundreds of skyscrapers in the central business district and many more high rise buildings in the outlying neighbourhoods. Sydney has 8 building over 200 meters tall.
Metro/Urban Population: 4.2 million

14. Dubai, United Arab, Emerites
Is this a mirage in the Middle East? Out of nowhere emerges this city in the middle of a desert. Make no mistake. This is Dubai, a city that produces only the best modern architecture in the world. Already home of the world's tallest all-hotel building and the tallest all-residential building in the world, AND currently proposed to build the world's tallest building, this skyline might just leap-frog to number 1. While the skyline is not so dense, each building that is built is a marvel all on its own. As a skyline it probably can't compete with the larger cities, however, the individual buildings in this city are by far the greatest examples of modern architectural marvel. All 7 structures in this city over 200 meters tall were build in 1999 or later, that's how new this city is.
Metro/Urban Population: 1.6 million

15. Guangzhou, China
This is a very modern city, yet, Guangzhou is called "the City of Flowers", as each of its spectacular skyscrapers is surrounded by grand green spaces and flower beds. Although it only has 4 structures over 200 meters, there are plenty of other high rises and each displaying a design that stands in a league of its own. This includes the 391 meter, 80 floor, CITIC Plaza which appears transparent against (the usually) clear blue sky!
Metro/Urban Population: 4.1 million
