hkskyline October 20th, 2004, 07:07 PM Most of us are in school overseas. So flying transcontinental or transpacific during the school year is quite hard.
Have you guys considered going to Guangzhou? It's a 3-hour coach ride or a 2-hour train ride from Kowloon. There are hotel and coach / rail packages available from local tour operators. I recommend China Travel Service since they are government-owned and are very reliable. They have outlets in Hong Kong and you can book once you arrive. For hotels, the best one in the city is the White Swan Hotel in the old European quarter. The hotel is right by the riverside and there is a subway station nearby to get to the skyscraper district in Tianhe. However, it's far from the old part of the city and the subway doesn't reach there. If you want to live in the old city, try the Furama Hotel (I stayed there last year). It's about 3-4 stars but a very short walk to the waterfront and the cruise boats.
If I remember correctly the coach ride costed me HK$100 one way while the Furama hotel costed about HK$500 a night for two people.

Beware that English is not widely spoken in China at all.
Sher October 20th, 2004, 08:38 PM Yea, summer is much better.. at least the sky is always crystal clear!!
Ya, Guangzhou should be a nice destination for you guys, but it's pretty much the same as Shenzhen. Why not choose Macau, or Taipei or even Shanghai? From HK, It's just only a 1.5 hours flight to Taipei and a 2 hours flight to Shanghai.
Skyscrapercitizen October 20th, 2004, 08:50 PM It is a special offer, hotel included for 5 nights. So we can't stay any longer or sleep somewhere else. Because it is very cheap we don't mind this! (flight + Hotel = 700 euro)
We are 6 full days in HK. One of them we'll visit shenzhen.
ailiton October 20th, 2004, 09:09 PM Ha ha that picture looks pretty real. I like it.
Sher October 20th, 2004, 10:02 PM Macau is not a skyscraper city, but it's worthy for a half-day visit for its gorgeous European architecture (although not as great as Netherlands of course) and the Macau Tower, as well as some new Vegas-style casinos and of course tasting their Macanese food.
Oh, btw, be sure to visit Langham Place and its new shopping mall. Did you guys go to Festival Walk in Kowloon Tong last time? I know some of you guys have special interests in hk's commie residential, you might try renting a bicycle in Shatin riding along the Shing Mun River to Tai Po, you can take a dozen of good pics there.
Centauri October 21st, 2004, 01:31 AM hehe, have fun there you two :D

kunming October 21st, 2004, 09:13 AM If you guys decide to head to Macau, be sure to taste some portugese egg tarts over there. Delicious!!
