Port St Johns Masterplan

The Matrix…cc performed the role as lead consultant in the development of a Master Plan for the town of Port St Johns along the Wild Coast. The other team members include town and regional planners, economists, environmentalists, engineers and tourism specialists. The Master Plan focuses on reinforcing the individual identities of the various nodes and the development of a new mixed use/residential area near the airstrip. The project identified the lack of bulk services and the absence of a waterborne sewerage system as the main stumbling block for development. The development of these facilities is first priority in terms of implementation plans. Following on this a number of Catalythic projects were identified which will improve the living conditions for the residents as well as creating a Tourism Node along the Wild Coast.

I only stop there briefly while travelling in the transkei but I really liked Port St John. I felt very laid back. I am sure there is great potential there.

i can imagine the benefits of this promenade/warf, and from there, maybe more small craft and boats to cater for trips out to see dolphins etc. paving and street furniture, and better design of the areas' access points is always a good start! I loved it there for its laid back appeal, and great backpackers!

Several years ago I did a backpacking trip around SA with some mates staying at youth hostels. Was great as we were generally the only South Africans so got to meet people from all over the place. Incredibly, virtually without exception, they all said St Johns Beach was their favourite place in SA. Recently sat next to a Dutch girl on a flight and she said the same thing. I haven't been their myself but it seems the relaxed, away from it all, feel is what does it. Hope this development enhances rather than destroys that. We have enough developed beach resorts.
