I hope their new mall project in Davao would veer away from their usual malls here in Metro Manila.

Two of the StarMalls I'm familiar with are StarMalls in Edsa Shaw just across Shangrila Mall and StarMall in Alabang - both serving as transit points for commuters with jeepney and fx terminals (Edsa Shaw Blvd) and bus terminals (Alabang).

Also, the interior is ok and more of a tiange mall and local malls in Davao such as G-Mall and G-South (imo) are even better (interior-wise) compared to the existing Star Malls.

THE business boom in Davao City is picking up. Two more malls are rising and are scheduled to open their doors to the public in a year or two.

Under construction in Lanang, some seven kilometers from the city hall, is the second SM mall in Davao owned by retail mogul Henry Sy. SM-Lanang is rising at the 10-hectare former Lanang Golf and Country Club owned by the Dacudao family. It is rising in tandem with two modern edifices – Park Inn Hotel of Radisson and the much-awaited SMX Davao Convention Center.
Senator Manny Villar’s housing firm is building a mall in barangay Mintal, 14 kilometers from downtown, in a place where Villar has out up another of one of his subdivisions. The Starmall, named after Villar’s mall in Manila, is located along the Davao City-Bukidnon Highway and the first of its kind in that part of the city dubbed by development planners as the “institutional area” because that is where many government institutions are located.

The University of the Philippines-Mindanao, the Philippine Science High School-Mindanao campus, the Regional Police Academy, the Bureau of Plant Industry experiment station, the Philippine Coconut Authority, the science centrum, the Philippine Army training center, the Southern Philippines Development Administration and the Department of Agrarian Reforms regional and national offices are located in that area.

There are close to 20 middle class and high-end housing projects in Mintal, which was once the center of commerce and headquarters of many Japanese-owned abaca plantations shortly before the World War II.

SM Lanang will be the fifth shopping center along J.P. Laurel Avenue sharing the dense traffic thoroughfare with Gaisano Mall of Davao, Victoria Plaza Mall, the Ayala-Floirendo owned Abreeza, and Robinsons Cybergate.

The SMX Davao Convention Center is expected to accommodate 5,000 plus people and can be divided into three halls that can accommodate 700 to 1,800 people each. It has a leasable area of about 5,400 square meters.

The convention center located inside SM Lanang will feature three halls, two function rooms and three meeting rooms.

According to SM Hotels and Conventions Corporation vice president for sales and marketing Lourdes Macalindong, the facility will help boost local tourism as it can attract large conventions and exhibitions.

The City has been unable to snatch the hosting of premiere conventions and other large events like the much-coveted Ad Congress because of the lack of a sufficient convention facility in the City.

The SMX is touted to become a one-stop convention complex with a nearby hotel to be put up in the area. The 204-room Park Inn Hotel under the Raddisson brand aims to complement the SMX and will be connected by a series of foot bridges. The P800-million hotel, the first of its brand in Southeast Asia, is expected to open by 2013.

The Park Inn Hotel targets business and leisure travelers as its main market.
According to its website, the hotel will become one of more than 100 hotels being operated by Radisson across Europe, the Middle East and Africa and North America which “boast of key amenities, colorful and contemporary interiors and innovative restaurants.”

Based on the plan, a bridge will connect the convention center to the P800-million Radisson Park Inn within the complex.

Aside from the malls, condominiums and hotels are also being built. Executives of SM companies and Ayala were in Davao City recently to give separate press conferences during the past two weeks to announce the start of construction of their condominium and hotel projects.

Well Market Market is better than Starmall, imo. I think what made Market Market magulo is the number of people swarming the mall. But in terms of its shops and how they can be found, i find it better coz Market Market is divided into "markets" eheheheh.. may fashion market, gift market, food market, etc. So its so easy to look for what we're looking for. Sana nga...one thing i noticed though as early as now that would serve as one of its differences is how this upcoming mall will be integrated into its residential project unlike here in Metro Manila where StarMalls are stand alone malls.

A property development company has started to develop a 15-hectare area which will become a central business district in Mintal as it will have both a housing project and a mall.


The commercial component, which is about three hectares of the area, is set to begin next year as the company has already hired two property consultants to do the master plan of the Star Mall, the first for the company in Mindanao.

Escalicas said the company has hired Aseya and DQ&A, two globally-renown companies that are consultants in mall development. “We hope to start the commercial component in the second half of next year,” Escalicas told the TIMES.

The setting up of the mall within its housing project in Mintal, said Escalicas, is a strategy in providing the area with a business district as it is already considered as a education hub of the city.

yes.. san pedro college, UP-Mindanao, Philippine Science high School, what else ba decided to transfer in Mintal.. Ateneo was rumored to transfer there...but of course ayaw ng mga jesuits...

Camella is offering Cerritos houses and townhomes in packages that go as low as P794,000, a mid-price range that will make Cerritos one of the most affordable themed developments in Davao.

The massive land development is now 90 percent complete, according to Escalicas.

“Our plan is to develop projects both in the southern and northern parts of the city,” Marlon Niño B. Escalicas, manager for Camella Communities’ Mindanao projects said.

“We want to start these projects as soon as possible,” Mr. Escalicas said, pointing out that two ongoing projects in this city -- Cerritos, a residential subdivision, in Mintal district and the Northpoint condominium in Bajada district -- are already 60% sold.

Cerritos, a 15-hectare project will feature the group’s commercial center brand Star Mall.

Mr. Escalicas said the company is planning to build the mall this year.

Mintal district, the host site, is Davao Region’s university town with the campuses of the University of the Philippines-Mindanao, Philippines Science High School, University of Mindanao, University of Southern Philippines and other private tertiary institutions located there.

The Northpoint project, just two kilometers from downtown, meanwhile has seen three of the targeted five condominium structures already built. The fourth building is up for construction this year.

“We are bullish on the market here,” said Mr. Escalicas.

The company’s plan to put up more projects here comes amid the continued entry of other big companies like Ayala Land, Inc. and SM Development Corp.

Ayala’s Abreeza Mall, a joint venture with Anflo Management and Investment Corp., opened in middle of last year while SM’s second mall, SM Davao North, is expected to open in the first half of the year.

Mr. Escalicas said overseas Filipinos and the rich buyers from neighboring provinces and cities, have continued to buy properties in the city because of its reputation as a safe investment haven.

But being in UP Mindanao for so long, I'd say Mintal is long overdue, especially UP-Mindanao. My only wish is for UP Mindanao to increase it's course offerings, increase the teaching staff, the number of colleges and put more research in the area. The only place to shop there in Mintal then was Astro, which is in Mintal's small public market.

Felcris calinan is actually a very good idea. Same as NCCC Calinan.

I actually travel everyday going to Tugbok from Agdao (imagine doing that for four, frickin' years!) but I never venture out going to Calinan aside from that one stint going to the Japanese museum.

With the existence of the Cerritos mall, murag mahimo nang murag mini-ciudad ang lugara ni.

Mintal will definitely change in the coming days. And that includes new malls & shopping centers. However, in the light of the new zoning ordinance that makes Mintal & Ulas areas as the Academic, Scientific & Research hub of Davao, medyo curtailed ang mga leisure, entertainment and recreational centers like cinemas, cockpits, malls and the likes. Naa man gud requirement ang DepEd nga distance of schools and educational institutions from these kind of establishments. But definitely student condos, dormitels & residential projects will flourish. :)

Sa pagkakaalam ko maliit lang ang program offerings ng UP Mindanao because they want students to enroll to degree programs that would "help and shape" Mindanao such as agribusiness economics,food technology,biology,anthropology, and etc. Kaya di maxado "mainstreamed" ang programs nila.....:)

^^ It's been that way for nearly 15 years man and the only offering I knew that changed were mostly changes to other courses like Agribusiness Econ from Economics or Anthropology from social Sciences. If it cannot go for good course offerings then it'll be much a niche university.

I have nothing against the school but if it has to stand out it has to make a mark na jud. What can UP Mindanao be as a unique contributor to the system? They even banned making GM Experiments in the university which I think is a lame-assed ruling (I pity Sir Eufemio Rasco when they did that!)

Knowing the type of tenants that a typical and existing Starmall here in MM has, hmmm it's not really something that one can consider as a shopping destination..but more of a place that would provide basic necessities.
