Taller, Better September 25th, 2011, 07:00 AM My god, the speed of development here is dizzying!! Every time you turn around there is a new project! I like that a lot of the latest wave of buildings seem to be of a different ilk than the all glass ones of five years ago. This one could be really trippy to stand at the corner and gawk up at!
Innsertnamehere September 25th, 2011, 10:25 PM yes, it seems like Toronto's architectural standards are rising, and fast.

ONE HUMAN November 6th, 2011, 05:45 PM Toronto's second Aqua (Chicago) knock-off. Getting a little tiresome.
How can it be tiresome when neither of them is even built yet? Having some wavy balconies isn't enough for Jade to be considered an Aqua knock-off. I don't find Jade to be all that similar to One Bloor, and they are in completely different parts of the city anyway.
Taller, Better November 6th, 2011, 08:12 PM I suppose we vacillate between craving architecture like other cities, and dismissing architecture because something is reminiscent to another city. Even if the
wavy balcony is not 100% unique and "new", I still like this project.

It does remind me of Aqua, but it's nowhere near as good. Tiresome, that we keep doing knock offs instead of showing creative leadership? At least they're trying. We could have ended up with our 200th glass box.
Humber Bay shores does have a few interesting buildings prosposed; I'll have to go take a peek in a few years.

Welcome to the forum!
Taller, Better November 7th, 2011, 06:54 PM Humber Bay is an up and coming location, and I think this will be a nice addition. It is not "iconic", but will be a nice addition.
Mollywood November 7th, 2011, 07:24 PM Toronto's second Aqua (Chicago) knock-off. Getting a little tiresome. Second? Did you forget the wavy balconies on Market Wharf and the irregular balconies on clear spirit, in the Distillery.
Taller, Better November 7th, 2011, 07:37 PM Playing with the shape of the balconies is an international trend of the past few years, and an inexpensive way to add a bit of pizazz to an otherwise pretty ordinary building. It will get naff if it is done to death, like the wretched faux-twisty trend did. Architects are merely responding to the throngs of locals who complain that our city doesn't look enough like Chicago, or practically any other city on the other side of the world.
isaidso November 8th, 2011, 04:25 AM We never did get a twisty tower, did we? :weird:
Taller, Better November 8th, 2011, 08:03 AM But, people kept on wanting one a full decade after Turning Torso was designed in Sweden (and they were tired everywhere else). With some designs, people want them ten years after the original; with others, they diss them for being remotely similar to one original project in another city. The public is fickle.... is it not? I sometimes think the public can not possibly be pleased, under any circumstance.
isaidso November 8th, 2011, 06:03 PM Some people wanted one a full decade after Turning Torso because they like that design element. Time isn't going to change that. I still crave 1930s style skyscrapers with set backs a full 80 years later. I'm not going to stop liking that just because it's not fashionable any more.
I don't think people are that fickle, we're just individuals with varied tastes. I neither like nor dislike twisty towers, but find it odd that people are tired of something we never encountered.

Which is the the argument against 1 Bloor East, and now this tower. We can't have wavy balconies because it was done somewhere else on the planet. Every tower must be iconic and unique regardless of its purpose or budget, otherwise (to use your term) it is a "knockoff".
isaidso November 9th, 2011, 05:11 AM I see; I didn't realize people were complaining about the curved balconies.
