Is this being built in Indonesia? Who will use the stadium when finished? Anyway quite a surprise that Indonesia will have state-of-the-art 40k football stadium with no tracks

Yes, it will be built in the island of Borneo, East Province - Indonesia. According to the official statements, this will be the new home base of Balikpapan's Football team "Persiba", and also in the future will be use as a host national and regional soccer competitions.

This is gonna be the first ever built in Indonesia such as football stadium without tracks, so it's pretty excited.

^^

No, not playing in Division 1, Persiba is playing in Super League Indonesia (LSI), the highest level competition in Indonesia.

^^A correction for bro yudibali, in fact previously there have been at least three (3) soccer stadiums without athletic tracks already built in Indonesia before this Balikpapan Stadium. :)

1. Lebak Bulus Stadium, Jakarta (15,000) built: 1980s
http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/3859/jakartabulus2.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/402/jakartabulus2.jpg/)

2. Maguwoharjo Stadium, Sleman Jogja (35,000) built: 2005
http://img90.imageshack.us/img90/9631/maguwoharjost.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/90/maguwoharjost.jpg/)

3. Tambaksari Stadium, Surabaya (30,000) built: 1970s

I know this is not an English word but I would say Mubazir for this stadium. LOL
Fans from Balikpapan aren't even as enthusiastic as fans in the Island of Java. There's no reason to have a 40k stadium. The bigger the stadium, the higher the cost for maintenance. When this stadium gets used by PERSIBA we will only see empty seats. Surely an atmosphere killer. Didn't they learn a lesson from Stadion Palaran? Even Stadion Jakabaring are empty all the time.

Clubs and local goverments in Indonesia should learn to know about the term Capacity Expansion. Being healthy economically is about being efficient which could be achieved by building stadiums that fit the average attendance every year, not by building over-capacity stadiums.

the keyword is location
if the location is correct and since balikpapan is a growing city in term of development and its population
then 40 thousand 4 tribune stadium is a good calculation
since it's quite possible this stadium capacity wouldn't and couldn't be expanded

anywho, new render

Maybe location is a big factor. But still, no matter how much Balikpapan grows like I said before Balikpapan people aren't as enthusiastic as fans in Java. They rarely fill up their current 10k stadium. In Java itself, teams which could fill up a 40k stadium are AREMA, PERSIB and sometome PERSEBAYA next to that PERSIJA has an average of 30k. No other teams could do that. Maybe PERSIBA could fill it up like 10 years from now. LOL

for indonesia, location is like a god word
palaran stadium, bung tomo stadium....these two big stadium on two quite wrong locations :ohno:

persiba stadium is not quite proper stadium, it only has 1 tribune and the other 3 are standing tribunes (literally standing with very bad point of view since almost no elevation level but it's nice cuz it's close to the pitch)

for years balikpapan has no proper stadium for football match
so your comparison with other city with proper stadium is quite undeserved
but for fact the only one seating tribune of persiba stadium is always full during match day (except raining day since pitch will be very bad :ohno:)
the tribune ticket price is one of the highest in indonesia (arguably)
since balikpapan is one of the highest city in term of living standard and average per capita income
the conclusion of current situation is, there are demands for a good football game which played in a good stadium in balikpapan
these demands aren't based only from the loyal supporters but also from non supporter (local residents) with economical capability and thirst for entertainment

this stadium is a modern design, with 4 tribunes closer to the pitch
the capacity is 40.000 personal seats (maybe including executive box for VVIP)
not only football stadium, from the design presentation there will be restaurant and many thing else
and with good league management and good league schedule
the possibility of the stadium to be full house during weekend match is quite high

2 years from now (2013) is the time we will see for sure
first modern football stadium with 40,000 seats in indonesia
on quite good location with so much potential

Okay, I am fine with your opinion since I don't really know much about Balikpapan, but there's another problem which created criticism from players of ISL. We already know that from previous years, we can say that Persiba Stadium has the worst condition in the context of the pitch. How will they be able to solve this? Maintaining a good pitch condition would be even more difficult with a full-roofed football specific stadium.
