That's a good news, the long-awaited tower is finally U/C, I hope this will boost more highrise projects in Helsinki, it deserves to have more and taller towers.
Located in Vuosaari, only 5km from the Helsinki's currently tallest, Maamerkki (82m).

Yeah, certainly seems like it. I really don't think 3xN design was much superior to this one, but Xky Xcraper (the one that came second in the design contest) was truly spectacular.

Okay, I guess it's hard to tell how it will look when completed, the 3 renderings postet by sdes looks quite different. I just think it looks a little too much like a typical office building, without any balconies or anothing. It is a residential building, right?
That Xky Xcraper sure has an amazing design, but probably also a bit too spectacular to ever be build;)

Most of the balconies are located on the southern side of the building, behind the glass wall.

First of all, JIIIIIIHAAAA! Finally the construction of Cirrus has begun! I´ll definetely drink for that! (well, maybe not right now, my boss wouldn´t like it I suppose ;))
About Panorama twr... I´m getting slightly worried about it really. The site still looks more or less same. No progress whatsoever :( The construction was supposed to start in September but seems like they´ve delayed it. One reason might be the new Palace hotel they have started to construct on the other end of the Sello 2-site. It will be 9 floors and they´ve already made the elevator shafts almost ready. I figure they might build the hotel first and then move on to build Panorama tower. Well, whatever the case...I sure hope they start the work on that tower soon!

Interesting, how much costs construction of such tower in Finland?
When reading "blasting in construction site" I understood how simple it is to construct something high in Helsinki. Not comparable to the nightmare in Riga geology, where the ground works can increase the construction per 1/3. Our highrise builders are fighting for better geology. F.e. I see enormous problems for "Stavie darzi" 37-floorer - it is located on border between the river sediments (layer thickness - some 60 m) and more firm land.

Unfortunately we have no information about the construction cost of Cirrus (at least I'm not aware of it), but KONE Building cost 120 million FIM to build, which is ~ 20 million EUR.
The soil in Helsinki the best possible for skyscrapers and other large scale projects -- solid granite.

outrageous cost! IMO
I don't think it's outrageous, sounds pretty normal to me.
Here's some examples Danish building "prices":
Prismet (http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/bu/?id=131589) = 28 million euros
Ferring Intl. Center (http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/bu/?id=109011) = 35 million euros
Maybe we should start another thread about this to compare, could be pretty interesting:)

Huono asia näin talviaikaan on vaan tuo alituinen räntä/sadekeli... En tiedä sitten onko koko etelärannikolla asia näin(?) mutta ainakaan kotopuolessa ei ongelmaa ollut vaikka Teuva ei rannikolta kaukana olekaan (~20-30km).

I can`t understand one thing. The 3 floor isnt even started when the 2 is almost finished, why they are building like this?

they are not using facade panels like we ... they are using prefabricated modules

/\ Ehhh, do you care to explain why you think prefabricated modules "sucks big time"?
I'm not saying it's better than any other way to construct a tower, but can't really see why it should be worse either.

It seems everything in Finland is made of prefabricated modules nowadays. Very few buildings have any details because of these factory made modules which look all identical. And the seams between the modules aren't that beautiful either!
I just think the buildings have nothing personal, you could build like a thousand 100% identical Cirrus-towers just by piling up these elements. I wish they would even try to hide the seams between elements so it wouldn't look like it's a Lego-house :D
mlm
August 13th, 2005, 11:56 AM
Well the tower was probably not designed to have a lot of details, so I don't see why they shouldn't do it with prefabricated modules if they think that's the way to go. I doubt it would be more "personal" if it was build in another way, the end result would be the same.
Blame the architect if you don't like it;)

It wouldn't be that hard to add some details to the elements, don't know why they don't do that.

Blaming the architect would the unwisest thing ever. They have no power whatsoever over any of these residential projects anymore here, it all depends on the developer. Sadly. As long as people buy apartments from buildings that have seams visible no one will care.
At least the building should now start to rise one floor per week from here on, but it doesn't take away the fact that it's utter crap. At the Talo forum Qualtagh called it "SDP-block", such a fitting name.

Yeah, the architecture of residential buildings in Finland is quite monotonous. Cirrus is just a normal multi-storey building, but a little taller than usual.

August 14th, 2005, 12:09 PM
Yeah, but fortunately it's so tall. From far away it will look cool, but it's facade is what it is...

Sorry but I don't like it, looks like an ordinary apartment building in "commieblock" style, just tall. :ohno:

That south side with balconies will be covered entirely in glass, as show in this highly optimistic render:

As what comes to your commieblock comment, well, no need to say "sorry". You're not the only one who thinks that way.
From the Finnish forum Talo
Ei voi mitään, mutta mulle tulee Cirruksesta mieleen 60-luvun elementtitalo. Sopii kyllä Vuosaareen juuri siitä syystä.
= I can't help it, but Cirrus reminds me of a 1960s concrete element building. That's the reason why it fits to Vuosaari.
http://talo.sw2000.net/images/smiles/090.gif
Voitaisiin ilmoittaa Cirrus "Sillä silmällä"-ohjelmaan, ehkäpä Fab Five saisi jotain parannettua.
= We could send Cirrus to "Queer Eye for a Straight Guy", maybe Fab Five could improve its look.
Hitto pakko myöntää että mullekin tulee Cirruksen nykydesignistä (tai siis tästä lopullisesta) jotenkin mieleen 60-70-luku.
= Damn, I have to admit Cirrus' current design (or this final design that is) somehow reminds me of 1960s/70s.
Ehkä sitten 2010-luvun laman jälkeinen uusi kasvukausi virkistää slummiutuneen Vuosaaren, ja vanhan SDP-block Cirruksen elementtisaumat rapataan huoneistojen uudistamisen yhteydessä. ;)
= Perhaps after the economic depression of 2010, a new growth period will revitalize the slummied Vuosaari, and the seams of prefabricated elements on SDP-block Cirrus will be covered during renovation of all the apartments.
We hate it.

Xky Xcraper would do a lot good to Helsinki and Finland, most modern buildings in Finland today, is too boxy. However, many of them is damn nice though, and i hope Cirrus is not an exeption. :)

Prefabricated modules are so ugly :( . Looks like just recently construction companies have even thought about using plaster rendering (is that the word?) in residential buildings.

Prefabricated modules are so ugly :(
I totally agree with you. In renderings Cirrus just looked so clean and shiny with it's pure white facades and black lines. But as we can see now, there's no totally black and pure white, but some ugly and boring grey shapes. With prefabricated module borders Cirrus looks cheap and momentary.
"Nemo"-proposal, this would have been damn cool.

I don't know excatly why it was denied, maybe because our dear construction companies wanted something cheaper and easier.
