Just look at ADDU Law School. Used to be ADDU Law had applicants almost exclusively from Davao and the rest of Mindanao. Today, students from all over the country are applying at ADDU because they know it is a highly competitive school (meaning hirap makapasok). Had a relative from Manila (Ateneo de Manila college pre-law graduate) who asked us if we had any connections sa ADDU - his top 3 choices of law schools were UP, ADMU, and ADDU.

The best jud bitaw ang ADDU Law School..... consistently ranks high in bar exam performance.

So, whats the latest about that highrise? Construct na..... dugaya oi

Father Tabora is really a big blessing for ADDU!

He has already accomplished a lot for the university. He raised the educational standards of the school. He advocates for clean energy by putting up solar panels at the rooftop. He also loves technology as evident by his twitter and wordpress accounts. The university has successfully implemented a 100% ONLINE enrollment system. and now this massive structure that will again put the jacinto campus as one of the most iconic structures in Davao or perhaps in Mindanao.

im confident this project is only few months away before it breaks ground. i read blogs of manilans, quezon city residents, etc were having goodtimes studying in ateneo de davao university.

Whoever said AdDU is wallowing in debts? I wish that guy can get his facts straight. For all I care, this project will see the light of day very very soon and every Davaoeño can be proud of it. Kudos to Fr. Tabora and his forward-thinking team. :cheers:

Update on ADDU Board of Trustees’ Meeting of 12 Nov. 2011

In the second regular meeting of the year, the ADDU Board of
Trustees came to a better appreciation of the plans of ADDU to build a new 20-storey, 60,000+ sq. m. “Community Center.” In the first regular board meeting, the trustees had approved in principle the proposition for this center, pending re-orientation of its design so as not to build on property not yet in the ownership of the University. The plans had meanwhile been re-oriented.

Archt. Christopher Ong spent an hour presenting his architectural design to the Board. It included a 6,000 sq.m covered plaza for student offices, cafes, eateries, stores, exhibits, and the like, much needed working space for faculty including new office complexes for the Academic Vice President and the Deputy Vice President for Formation, the University Archives, the Office and work area of the University Research Council, the Office and work areas of the University Social Engagement and Advocacy Council, the University Guest Tract, the Jesuit Residence, the Sports and Fitness Complex, a parking facility for some 300 cars, and a 4000-person Convention Center, and a new 700-person University Chapel.

Following Archt. Ong’s presentation, the members of the Board discussed his plans with him, ascertaining that the architect has properly provided for “a green building” with reference to water use and power generation, proper accessibility, sufficient generator power, and safety provisions in cases of emergency.

After Archt. Ong had left the board room, the trustees discussed the status of the project in the context of the government of the Society of Jesus. For this portion of the meeting, the participation of Fr. Roberto Yap, S.J., Treasurer of the Philippine Province SJ, who could not be physically present due to a serious knee injury, was enabled through Skype. He presented the comments of the Province Finance Committee. First, he explained the context of the Committee’s remarks, stating that the ADDU is governed by civil law – where the ADDU Board of Trustees is its highest policy-making body – but also by canon law and Jesuit law. Because of the latter, ADDU projects involving major construction, land acquisition and incurrence of debt ultimately require the permission of the General Superior of the Society of Jesus. The Provincial Superior recommends this to him after due consultation with his official consultors and with the Province Finance Committee. Both the consultors and the Province Finance Committee are advisory to the Provincial.

In this context, Fr. Yap shared the recommendations of the Finance Committee which was basically to separate the academic component of the project from the “commercial component” suggesting that each be treated, judged and managed separately. Fr. President, however, stated that from the very beginning the project had been presented as integral to the operation of the school. Even the large convention center would serve the community for such as large-scale academic convocations, big liturgical celebrations, cultural presentations, and graduations. The complex could be sustained by the school operation alone.

It was however appreciated that for the incidental benefits to the school that could come from opening school facilities to the market, the administration was already working on a business plan and feasibility study, and would complete this soonest. Chairman Paul Dominguez offered to connect Fr President with important players in the tourist industry.

Fr. Provincial said the project would be discussed in the next Province Consultors meeting. While he said he could not state when Fr. General might approve the project, he did give a green light for the architectural plans to proceed – without, of course, binding the university to their implementation.

i think its not that way, kasi di naman napunta sa masama ang pinutahan ng kanilang expenses, instead napunta sa ating city at hindi sa ibang city napunta ang revenue ng ateneo....., nakadagdag attraction sa city natin....at okeyy din ang project....

Yap shared the recommendations of the Finance Committee which was basically to separate the academic component of the project from the “commercial component” suggesting that each be treated, judged and managed separately. Fr. President, however, stated that from the very beginning the project had been presented as integral to the operation of the school. Even the large convention center would serve the community for such as large-scale academic convocations, big liturgical celebrations, cultural presentations, and graduations. The complex could be sustained by the school operation alone.

Fr. Provincial said the project would be discussed in the next Province Consultors meeting. While he said he could not state when Fr. General might approve the project, he did give a green light for the architectural plans to proceed – without, of course, binding the university to their implementation.

The Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU) is planning to put up a 12-storey building within its campus along Jacinto st. once the institution gets a nod before the Society of Jesus in Rome, the founder of the school.

The timetable of the institution is to start the building by April.

He said the proposal is to build a 20-storey building to serve as an AdDU Tower. But they decided to make it as a 12-storey building so they could also pour in funds for the improvement of their sports facility, he added.

The 12-storey building will be called the community center that would house the faculty work in areas, audio-visual rooms, study areas, faculty lounge, research centers, areas for university guests, Jesuit community and services to the community.

The building will also have a two-storey plazas where the student offices, cafes and small stores will be placed. The community center would cover around 43,000 square meters, adjacent to the school chapel near Roxas Avenue.

The school further planned to enhance its sports facility and assembly. It would house a big stage, four basketball courts, fitness center and wellness gym with vacant spaces for the parking lots and a high roof to have more room for expansion.

The university is also eyeing to establish a swimming pool near the planned sports facility.

ATENEO de Davao University (AdDU), one of the city's largest Catholic schools, gears up for the construction of its 12-storey community center, which will be the city's tallest educational tower so far.

Fr. Joel E. Tabora S.J., AdDU president, said Thursday unlike their original plan to construct a new 20-storey building, they now intend to build a separate four-storey sports center and a 12-storey community building.

Tabora said as soon as the Society of Jesuits in Rome gives its approval to their plan, they will start the construction phase by April this year.

AdDU sets aside P865 million for the entire project which will be beneficial not only to the university students but also to the community.

"We want a project which is less spectacular but more of service," Tabora said, explaining why they pushed for the project.

Based on the original plan of the university, the center will be built on top of the four-storey sports building. But the university revised its original plan.

Tabora said the entire Jesuits society intends to expand the university's physical structure that is geared toward its vision and mission in relation to its responsibility to the community.

Presently, AdDU has already submitted its final working plan and design to the Jesuits society in Rome and they are now waiting for its approval.

On Monday, AdDU has bought the adjacent property owned by the Dacudaos adjacent to the existing main building of the university, but within the same block. The 4.3-hectare newly purchased property will add to the existing 3.5-hectare area of AdDU.

Based on the preview of the new plan of AdDu's newest project as illustrated by Tabora, the first and second floors will be the plaza, which will include study complex for students and lounges, the third to fifth floor will be allocated for faculty rooms, sixth floor as AVP development lounge, seventh floor for research area, eight floor will be set aside for services to the community, ninth floor will be dedicated for the university’s guests, 11th floor for the Jesuits community, and the 12th floor will be intended for archive area.

"We want an area where students can meet and interact with one another aside from other services to students, faculties, and to the community," Tabora added.

I wouldn't really vote for having Classrooms at that tower.

It will be such a hassle to have classes at the upper floors especially during peak class hours.

I am now wondering if the current lot is sufficient for the sports center considering that it will have 4 basketball courts which will really consume a lot of space. I hope they will start and finish this project as soon as possible in time for my masters :)

The presentation by Architect Christopher Ong of the revised building plans for the Jacinto Campus. Fr. Provincial Jojo Magadia, S.J. had asked that the approved pricey convention center be removed from the plans since its operation, including its risks, was not integral to the vision-mission of the university. He also asked that the general plans be downsized in order to be able to conserve more of ADDU’s resources into an endowment fund for ADDU.

The downsized plans now envision a twelve-story Community Center cum University Chapel facing Roxas Blvd., and a Multi-Purpose Sports and Assembly Bldg. The community center will house an elevated plaza, a floor for student study, four floors for faculty and the Academic Vice President and Deputy Academic Vice President, a floor for research, a floor for outreach, a floor for university guests, a floor for the Jesuit Community, and restricted floor for archives or special displays. The separate Sports and Assembly Building will have an elevate plaza, two floors of parking (to accommodate 300 cars when fully operated), four basketball courts and a stage – expandable in the future by three mezzanine floors. Between the two buildings there will be a swimming pool. Fr. Provincial has approved these plans, and he has brought them to Rome to present to Fr. General for his approval. If they are approved, I am hoping that we can commence construction in the summer break.

In my opinion being a graduate of this institution, a 20-storey building is overkill. That's just too much space considering that Ateneo has a lot of sprawling properties here in Davao region.

Construction of Ateneo buildings to start soon

ACTUAL construction works for the two new buildings of the Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU) in its Jacinto campus will commence in May.
AdDU president Fr. Joel E. Tabora S.J. said they will start erecting phase 1 of the 10-storey community facility and the seven-storey sports center next month after the Society of Jesus in Rome gave its go signal for construction to proceed.
Ateneo had originally planned to build a 20-storey tower, but changed its plans to give way for the construction of the sports center, which will be erected adjacent to the main building.

AdDU is currently embarking on an aggressive infrastructure and sports facility program.
Just last March 21, the school held its blessing and inauguration of its rubberized sports track in its Matina campus with Fr. Tabora himself leading the affair.
Tabora said the sports track is worth P12 million and is now operational.

Construction of the indoor swimming pool is also ongoing at the school's grade school in Matina. One more pool, this time for the high school, will be constructed soon.
