That's a staggering thought! Amazing how your city must have changed since that time! :okay:

Thank you, gents, for this thread! I really appreciate it. :) I love churches, and it's just fascinating for me to see how Europeans built their churches far away from home and looking just like those in their own countries.

The Wesley Church looks Anglican and has some red Chinese (?) writing beneath its roof cross. St. John's is primarily made of brick (I think) and has six wooden doors/entrances along the side of the church.

St Anne Church, BM

http://i1.trekearth.com/photos/2782/st_anne01.jpg
by YahWen Ho

This church was founded by Father F.P Sorin, a French Roman Catholic missionary in 1888. In the 1900s, word started to get round that vows had been fulfilled and miracles performed which were attributed to St. Anne.

This led to the Feast Day of St. Anne becoming the occasion for a major annual pilgrimage in which thousands take part from all over the region and even from as far away as Australia. Today, the Feast of St. Anne held towards the end of July is a nine-day affair, the climax of which comes at the end with a spectacular candlelight procession.

There is now a larger new St. Anne’s Church some two km away, but for the festival the old church remains the focal point.

Both churches are located in town called Bukit Mertajam at mainland Penang. Please visit this church if you do drop by Malaysia.

Picture adjusted in the following method:

1) Cropped
2) Resized to 800 x 600
3) Auto Adjust Contrast and Levels
4) Using shadows/highlights filter adjusted so that the greens behind are not so dark while maintaining the church as the main subject
5) Select All
6) Modify Border thickness to 5 pixels
7) Edit -> Fill -> Choose border colour (White)
8) Add new background layer and increase canvas size by 50pixels on each sides
9) Added Title and Copyright using Text tool
10)Layers -> Flatten Image
11)Save
12)Using Microsoft Picture Viewer, Resize back to 800 x 600

I am not sure about Mormon (Latter Day Saints) churches though...and the Bahai faith is completely different. :) But I have certainly met quite a few Bahais.

There are many protestant denominations in Malaysia apart from the Catholic Church, which was the earliest from a historical perspective - starting in Melaka during the Portugese colonisation. The bigger denominations (Anglican, Methodist, Presbyterian, Lutheran, etc.) came in during various stages of the colonial periods (the Dutch and the English).

There is also a smaller Mar Toma and Syrian Orthodox community (from Kerala, India) in Malaysia.

This church is easily one of the oldest (if not the oldest) in Kuala Lumpur. The Anglican Church dedicated to St. Mary, was completed in 1895 and is of an early English Gothic architecture designed by AC Norman, a government architect at that time. It was actually a replacement for an older wooden church built in 1887 on Bukit Aman (then known as Bluff Hill). Among the notable personalities who have attended mass here include Queen Elizabeth II. :)

for more of it's history, please visit the following site:

There are some Mormon places of worship, but not registered church i believe, they operate in shoplots or houses. I have been invited to one in PJ but dun really remember where exctly as I didn't go. There is another one in Penang along wif a Jehovah Witness place of worship. If you want a direction, just ask those white boys who are alwiz around major cities wif bicycles and some books, thy are Mormon evangelists.

As for Baha'i...there are many, for Penang, the centre is in Gottleib Road, in an office building fronting Penang Chinese Girl's School.

Malaysia opens Southeast Asia's Largest & "Most Modern" Church today...

This is the main auditorium with a 5,000-seater... the church has many halls with a total size of over 600,000 square foot of internal space.

This year's Easter is quite significant to Malaysia. Why?

1. My Government celebrates almost its 2nd year of official "political" ties with the Vatican City; and
2. Marking the opening of Southeast Asia's Largest Church outside of Kuala Lumpur.

As SEA’s biggest church opens, Christians dismiss Malaysian Muslim backlash
The Malaysian Insider | By Boo Su-Lyn | March 31, 2013

KUALA LUMPUR, March 31 — Malaysian Pentecostal church Calvary Church brushed off fears of a potential backlash from Muslims, even as it celebrated Easter today at its newly opened building here that is touted to be the largest in Southeast Asia.

The RM200 million 600,000-square-feet building dubbed the Calvary Convention Centre (CCC) in Bukit Jalil boasts a 5,000-seat auditorium, as well as a multi-purpose hall, classrooms, lecture halls, a nursery and other spaces that will be converted into retail stores and cafes.

“What is there to feel threatened about? It’s a landmark that shows Malaysia is truly a land that’s multi-cultural,” Calvary Church associate pastor David Seah told The Malaysian Insider today, after the Easter service this morning that was attended by some 3,000 people.

“I don’t foresee any potential backlash,” he added.

Some Muslims expressed on their blogs in 2011 uneasiness with the size of the CCC, saying that it was a threat to the position of Islam as the country’s official religion and that it might be used to convert Muslims.

But Seah stressed that Calvary Church did not proselytise Muslims, saying: “When we gave out tracts, we told members not to put them in Muslim homes.”

The Pentecostal church pastor said that the construction of CCC on commercial land began in 2007 and was completed this year, noting that it would be able to accommodate its 3,000-strong congregation that was previously spread out in Damansara Heights, Damansara Perdana and Cheras.

Calvary Church senior pastor Rev Dr Tan Sri Prince Guneratnam wept when he took to the podium to deliver his sermon on Easter, the most important day on the Christian calendar that celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

“We are here. We made it,” said Guneratnam in a trembling voice, before wiping his eyes.

Some church members reportedly accused Guneratnam in 2008 of mismanaging funds and expressed concern over the rising cost of the CCC project, which was originally estimated at RM50 million, leading to a long dispute that split the church.

Guneratnam urged the congregation today to make an Easter donation, besides contributing their regular tithes of 10 per cent of their income, pointing out that the church still had loans to pay.

“God can provide your needs,” said Guneratnam, as cloth bags were passed around the congregation to collect the money.

He told The Malaysian Insider after the service today that CCC was not built as a threat to the Muslims, or to proselytise them, but to facilitate the church’s activities.

Associate Pastor Stephen Kum similarly doubted that Muslims would oppose the building of the CCC.

“There’s freedom of religion in this country,” Kum told The Malaysian Insider.

“We’re not here to provoke, we’re not here to make a statement. We’re just here to be a church. We’re growing,” he added.

Calvary Church publicity coordinator Chua Suat Khim pointed out that the church was forced to rent various stadiums previously to host Easter and Christmas events.

“We had difficulties. They cancel our programmes sometimes...we felt, in the long run, it’s better to build,” said Chua.

The two-hour Easter service at Calvary Church featured a full-fledged band with drums and electric guitars, as well as a 120-strong choir, that led the congregation through several songs before Guneratnam’s sermon.

Calvary to present story of Easter through special musical in its own new church premise

Uplifting performance: The musical promises impressive staging designs, heartwarming songs and captivating dances.

EASTER is observed all over the world, though not everyone knows the story behind this special day. If you are keen to find out about Easter, catch Heaven & Earth Rejoice!, a musical presentation by Calvary Church, Kuala Lumpur.

The musical will run tomorrow at 8pm, as well as on Saturday and Sunday at 5pm.

For the past 27 years, Calvary Church has presented musicals on Easter and Christmas every year. This year’s show, however, promises something different.

Instead of using a rented venue, this musical will be held in Calvary’s very own, recently completed building, the Calvary Convention Centre (CCC) in Bukit Jalil.

In preparation for Heaven & Earth Rejoice! and to raise awareness of the completion of the CCC in the surrounding neighbourhoods, Calvary and more than 300 volunteers distributed handbills and leaflets to homes within a 5km radius of the CCC in Bukit Jalil.

Heaven & Earth Rejoice! depicts the story of Jesus Christ and his life on earth. From the majestic throne of heaven and the manger in Bethlehem to the streets of Jerusalem and the cross on Golgotha, the musical will showcase the perennial Easter story through impressive staging designs, heartwarming songs and captivating dances. The musical will feature songs packed with uplifting melodies such as Go Change The World, Trust His Heart and Glory Glory.

The 270-strong cast of actors, singers and dancers will bring this timeless story alive in the CCC’s 5,000-seater auditorium.

To help the audience understand the relevance of the Easter Story, the church’s senior pastor, Rev Tan Sri Prince Guneratnam, senior pastor of Calvary Church, will deliver hope-filled messages every night.
