I did a tour over there in August. I had a surprisingly good time. Obviously they only show you what they want you to see and if you went in unquestioning it'd be very easy to be sucked into the propaganda they try and sell you. It was on our final night there that we were speaking with a guy from the Swiss Embassy/Consulate who was telling us how bad things really are. Terrifying stuff... I was surprised by the fact we had a little more freedom than I was expecting. We were able to challenge the guides about aspects of the regime...and make some rather inappropriate gags...An interesting trip.

WOW! I really love the temples, they look very beautiful and calm, almost a world away from the city.

Another thing that has always amazed me about NK is that they have these massive highways probably around 8 to 10 lanes wide with NO TRAFFIC whatsoever on them - as one of your photos demonstrates. Also, how in Fuck did you get to take a photo of a new born baby....?

I have read that it is the guides that are punished for the behaviour of their charges rather than the other way around. All guides to visiting NK say that one should be careful of ones behaviour in NK not for ones own sake, but for the sake of the guides/minders.

I would bet you anything that the guides superiors are told to be challenged and push the boundaries so that it doesn't look like they are mindless drones.

The style and circumstance of this country and its people holds an hypnotic affect on me, i cant turn my gaze away.
Its one of the last truly fascinating countries left in the World, i too have plans to visit North Korea in the next 5 years if i can get my act together.

It's quite expensive to go on a tour there no?

Out of Beijing it costs $1500 for a 5 night tour including everything except souvenirs. There are cheaper tours that are organised by Chinese agencies departing from the NK border but I didn't have time to get up there. Once you're in North Korea all tours are run by the state sanctioned travel agency and all run to very similar itineraries.

North Korea, because of its lack of development actually looks very clean and green.

Its such a shame the government would let their nation be in this position. Situated between China, South Korea and Japan, it could have been the fourth East Asian Tiger. I hope that would be the case in future. Then the region would probably be the most prosperous in the world.
