View Full Version : Malaysian POLYMER notes!!!
szehoong October 22nd, 2004, 04:58 AM Polymer banknotes in circulation from Tuesday
BY YVONNE CHONG
Bank Negara will be introducing the nation's first polymer banknotes early next week.
The new polymer banknotes, which will go into circulation on Tuesday, will replace the existing paper banknotes, Bank Negara officials said yesterday.
The central bank is, however, keeping mum on the design as well as the denominations of the new banknotes.
Bank Negara had issued polymer banknotes with a face value of RM50 in 1998 but that was only to commemorate the Kuala Lumpur Commonwealth Games.
Once the central bank starts to issue polymer banknotes of a particular denomination, it will cease printing the paper version of that denomination. Existing paper banknotes in circulation will continue to be legal tender until they are returned to Bank Negara. Banknotes are usually returned to the central bank when they are soiled beyond circulation use.
The central bank has also declined to reveal where the polymer ringgit banknotes will be printed.
There are currently only a few printers globally that are capable of printing polymer banknotes and the majority of them are located in Australia, the first country to issue polymer banknotes. The first Australian polymer banknote was issued in 1988, after 20 years of research to developt echnology to print banknotes on plastic. By 1996, it had a complete series of circulating polymer banknotes.
Currently 23 countries, including Malaysia, have issued polymer banknotes, either for circulation or commemorative purposes. Three countries – Australia, New Zealand and Romania – have changed all their banknotes to polymer. Over 5.3 billion notes had been issued up to May 2004.
Polymer notes are robust, retain their quality and are cleaner and more hygienic to handle. They are tear-resistant, impervious to water and other liquids, do not absorb dirt and are resistant to germs due to the lack of moisture and nutrients on the notes.
It is also harder to counterfeit polymer banknotes. Security features incorporated in the note substrate and the note printing, such as the “clear window” on the note and “shadow image on the clear window”, are easily recognisable yet cannot be reproduced through colour photocopy or desktop publishing.

szehoong October 25th, 2004, 03:06 PM Kuala Lumpur 98-XVI Commonwealth Games RM 50 Commemorative Polymer Bank Note
Bank Negara Malaysia issued a RM50 denomination polymer commemorative bank note for the first time to commemorate the Kuala Lumpur 98 - XVI Commonwealth Games on 1 June 1998.
New Design
This RM50 commemorative polymer bank note has a different design compared to the RM50 denomination circulation note. The bank note measures 152mm X 76mm. It is yellowish blue in colour and carries design motifs which depict Malaysia's economic development, and also the XVI Commonwealth Games. The front side features the portrait of the first Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong on the right and the Kuala Lumpur city skyline with prominent landmarks in the centre. The Commonwealth Games "Look Programme" which features the stylised butterfly symbol, and the gold-coloured Optical Variable Device (OVD) with the portrait of the first Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong in the clear window, appear on the left. The logo of Bank Negara Malaysia appears in the other clear window on the right of the note. The Kuala Lumpur International Airport is featured as the central backdrop. To the right, the background design shows the artist's impression of the Multimedia Super Corridor connecting Kuala Lumpur City to Putrajaya, Cyberjaya and the new Kuala Lumpur International Airport. The back design shows the Stadium Utama Bukit Jalil in the centre. The logo of Kuala Lumpur 98-XVI Commonwealth Games appears on the left of the note.
Security Features
New security features are incorporated in this RM50 polymer bank note. It combines conventional security features commonly found in paper bank note and innovative security features which are unique to polymer bank notes. These features provide protection against the use of contemporary high resolution digital colour copiers and scanners. The security features of this RM50 Polymer bank note include the following:
(1) Clear Security Windows - visible from both sides of the note, they are readily identifiable features, including under low light conditions.
(2) Optical Variable Device - positioned in the larger clear window and visible from both sides, a bright golden-coloured diffractive Optical Variable Device features the portrait of the first Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong. Clearly visible optical shifts are generated when the note is tilted to the light.
(3) Security Vignette - Bank Negara Malaysia's logo appears, printed in white in the smaller clear window and visible from both sides of the note.
(4) Intaglio Micro-Lettering - part of the background behind the portrait and the ring shape around the stadium contains micro-lettering of the words "KL 98 Games" which can be viewed under a magnifying glass.
(5) Visible and Invisible Fluorescing Printing - elements of the background designs, the Games logo and the two serial numbers will fluoresce when seen under ultra violet light. Invisible under normal conditions, the denomination will also appear when exposed to ultra violet light.
(6) Anti Scanner / Copier Patterns - the note features certain areas, designed such that these will change appearance when copied.
(7) Overcoating - the special protective coating of the polymer notes will make the security features in the polymer notes stay in a good condition over the entire life of the note. The numbers are positioned in two rectangles, which have not been overcoated, and these can be seen when the note is tilted at an angle.
This RM50 commemorative polymer bank note is a collector's item produced in a limited quantity, that is 500,000 sets. The note is legal tender. The RM50 note is priced at RM80 per set and the note is packaged in a folder. This commemorative note was available at all commercial banks from 1 June 1998.

szehoong October 27th, 2004, 05:08 AM Polymer RM5 notes now in circulation
KUALA LUMPUR: Bank Negara has come out with polymer substrate RM5 banknotes and will stop issuing paper-based RM5 banknotes.
The new banknotes, which are similar in design, colour and size to the existing ones, are available at all Bank Negara branches and commercial banks.

HARD CASH: Hasliliwati Ramli showing the new RM5 note (top) and the old one at Bank Negara yesterday.
Bank Negara Assistant Governor Datuk Mohamad Daud Dol Moin said the existing RM5 paper banknotes would remain legal tender and continue to be in circulation until they were fully withdrawn over time.
Speaking at the launch of the new banknotes, he said that Bank Negara was issuing 80 million pieces of them.
Mohamad Daud said the new banknotes had enhanced security features.
These include a clear window with the shadow image of the Prime Minister’s Office in Putrajaya and an embossed printing of the numeral 5, both of which are visible from either side of the banknote.
The new banknotes also feature Bank Negara’s Kijang (deer) logo, printed in white and visible on either side of the note.
Mohamad Daud said polymer substrate banknotes were more durable as they were non-porous, more resilient to dirt and liquid and not easily torn.
Malaysia is the 19th country to adopt the polymer banknote technology and issue polymer banknotes for circulation.
More information on the new banknote can be obtained from Bank Negara’s website, www.bnm.gov.my.

Maybe the newer notes are better I presumed. My friend had put a New Zealand Dollar note in a washing machine then a dryer and it came out unharmed. ;)
