szehoong October 23rd, 2004, 08:14 AM City cops start cracking down on jaywalkers
KUALA LUMPUR: Use pedestrian bridges or you will be fined – that’s the clear message from the City traffic police to jaywalkers.
Its operations and enforcement chief Deputy Supt Mohamad Akhir Darus said police have beefed up the on-going operation, codenamed Ops Jejantas, following the increase in the number of vehicles and people on the road recently.
In a two-hour operation near a pedestrian bridge in Jalan Tan Cheng Lock yesterday, police 80 summonses to jaywalkers including foreigners.
“More people will go out and shop for the coming Deepavali, Hari Raya and Christmas festivals.
“It's time to educate them on road safety and the use of overhead bridges,” he said, adding offenders would be issued with a compound, which carries a maximum fine of RM300.
DSP Mohamad Akhir said police were concerned with the high number of pedestrians killed in road mishaps yearly.
“In the first nine months this year, nearly 11% (491) of the 4,639 people killed in fatal accidents were pedestrians.”
He said police would also continue with their daily operation to deter illegal racing and reckless driving in the city.

Yup......in some places there are no places to cross safely or that the bridge or tunnel is located in a wrong place.
But there are a few places like in front of Berjaya Times Square for example - pedestrians there should be fined. Firstly....the Imbi Monorail station which had a built-in pedestrial bridge is just about 100 metres away. Secondly the station had an escalator so one dun need to climb it. Third....city hall erect pedestrian barriers to prevent people to cross there.....but still some people managed to squeeze thru the barriers ......and it is such a nuisance to cars not to mention it is hazardous as that area is a high-traffic area .........
I personally find it more convenient to cross via the pedestrian bridge. There is once when my friends and I got seperated and they are already at Imbi Plaza which I am still at Low Yat......I managed to get to Berjaya Times Square quicker via the monorail staion :D

very different in australia.............i mean when drivers see pedestrians wanted to cross the zebra crossing, they will stop and make way for them to cross the road. i guess in malaysia people are not used to that.
